    ABOUT THIS FILM
    ____________________
    Fatal raids
    Watch as first a tawny owl barges past the female kestrel, ignoring her screeches of protests, and crushes an egg in the scuffle that follows. Not long afterwards, the kestrel nest is raided again, this time by a jackdaw, and yet another egg is lost. Then the tawny owl is back again and tragically destroys yet another precious egg .
    Resilient despite tragedy
    Sadly the kestrel pair lost two out of seven eggs during the scuffle to defend their precious brood, but they carry on in spite of the problems and go on to incubate the remaining five. Where most birds would have abandoned their eggs, this stalwart kestrel pair carry on!
    Follow the full story of these kestrels on my blog here: www.roberteful...

The jackals would rather raid a nest tham actually hunt for rodents. Lazy birds. Thank you for the Kestrals, I do not think I've ever seen them before. All birds have a crazy high chick mortality. Forever. In the best of worlds. I know you think you are being noble or moral and just with a inaccurate projection onto nature. But you are likely not. I can give you several examples if you desire of human and animal interaction that is gut wrenching. But this is normal in the avian world. Sorry. A robin averages 1 in 20 success year in , year out....but they still pleasingly troop on with their horrible odds

      @Jennifer yes, they eat the egg shells because not only is that instinctual but it's to get nutrients & calcium. Chickens do the same thing. I worked for an Avian/exotic veterinarian for 7 years. We saved several of the Raptors from the wildlife rescue in our town here in Panhandle of Florida. We saw a LOT of parrots, Budgies, reptiles, hedgehogs, rabbits, a fox, an Emu, etc. And you are right. They DEFINITELY are not humans with feathers. But there is more to birds than I ever realized. Thank you for your comment.😃😄🥰🦅🦅

    • @the1stooge128
      @the1stooge128 4 года назад +29

      @Jennifer She obviously didn't experience heartbreak, or grieve like she lost a child. But she definently felt something. You saw how she protected that first egg from that owl. She could've let him have it and had another egg. But she defended it. And she didn't throw away the broken egg right away. She looked at it for awhile. Though she did eat the yolk, it is not the same as eating the chick inside. The yolk is the food for the chick, so she was just eating food that otherwise would've gone to waste.

    Beautiful pair! It's kinda cute watching daddy kestrel drop the broken eggshell out the tree (even though he has to eat some of the yolk- good protein can't be wasted!) and I LOVE watching when the parents shimmy on top of the eggs to cover as many of them as possible with their fluffy chests. X3 Weird doofy owl home invaders! Seemed like mama kestrel had worse luck with facing more predators, but it's probably better it was the mom since she's bigger than the dad. So glad she got enough nutrients to be able to lay more eggs.
    (P.S. for viewers: distinction between the sexes -male has the grey crown and is smaller, female has a plain brown and black barred back and head and is larger)

      That was the dad actually - you can tell by the grey head. The mom had left to do some hunting and dad came back just in time to save the remaining eggs, but not quick enough for the broken egg unfortunately.

    (Rip 2 eggs) but I have a question when do they know when the eggs are ready to hatch?

    • @RobertEFuller
      @RobertEFuller  2 года назад +1

      They will be able to hear the chick as it starts to cheep just before it hatches - then they will sense or see a pip when the chick first starts to break the shell. Sometimes the parent will help remove the remains of the shell out of the way of the wet new chick.
