My first car was an FC rx7 and I miss the temperamental behavior of the rotary. It made me the sadistic car enthusiast I am today. I’m so happy to see you keep the rotary power unit in it and give it all the tasty mods all of us OG rotary heads would usually do. Awesome build man.

Something I could never do but I absolutely appreciate. Long story long. New sub and noti on. He hooked me when he clatbarred it and got it looking minty! He did the time and I saw the shine 😍😍😍😍🤌🏼👍

That’s awesome man. I have a soft spot for the FD so anytime I see someone bring one back to life I have to give them mad props. I’ve had a 95 since I was 19 back in 2000
Such a nice build, such a nostalgic car! That much extra cooling is a godsend. Hoping you beefed up your oil lines enough to deal with the extra oil pressure and flow-rate you're needing, that quickly becomes urgent when boosting these rotaries too.
MX5 tech (creators of the wink mod, works for the rx7 too) apparently sell a diagnostic tool that reads codes for RX7s that use the 16 bit ECU (96 onwards) but they always seem to be out of stock ):
All my s13s had the sleepy eyes thankfully in a Nissan u just snip a wire and can adjust your head lights from open to however closed u want them with the press of a button and A turn of your head light
All it needs I think is a mazdaspeed rear spoiler, aftermarket wheels, color match the headlight covers, and a coilover kit to bring it down to a aesthetic (but functional) ride height. For a daily, keep it at a reliable sub 300Hp.
The Bose system is terrrrrible. It wasn’t even good in the early 90’s, and it adds unnecessary weight to a car with a design ethos to minimize mass. The touring model in general is less desirable, especially with the ugly sunroof that messes up the beautiful double bubble roof profile. Just, don’t.
I know a guy that had a rx7 with the bose bass cannon and dealer option bbuild sheet it was inane that Mazda was doing what they did back in the early 90s
The USDM FD has a completely different AC setup from a different manufacturer than the JDM RHD cars. The Greddy kit is very much plug and play on a RHD car but doesn't work all that easy on LHD cars without doing some custom setup or ditching the AC.
21:57 yoooooh man i see that you have that MAZDA SUPER WOOFER from BOSE that's one of the rarest option part of an FD RX-7 I think that your car maybe an Efini Type-R model...
Glad you were able to fix your overheating issues...just in time on day 7 to get smoked by a 'stock' Gen 1 BRZ. 🤣🤣 Can't wait for your next video in the series, though if it isn't too late I would strongly suggest not chasing a quadruple-digit horsepower number (or whatever number you have in mind). The Supra is the car for that, and you guys have owned how many of those and moved on. The FD is a driver's car, and peak horsepower is just one point at one rpm on the torque curve. I suggest going for drivability, quick turbo spool & throttle response, and 'area under the curve' for maximum reliability and driver enjoyment. Out of all the 90s Japanese supercoupes, the FD was the lightest, highest-revving, least GTish, and most sportscar-like. But I'm not the sacrilege police. Whatever you decide, I'm here for it. Don't let some keyboard warrior dissuade you from what you want to do to your car. Happy late Thanksgiving 🦃 and hope you have a wonderful holiday season coming up! Hope to see this build back before Christmas, I have faith in you guys!
The FD is going to be a 400hp maximum car! More than likely it'll run closer to 300. It's lightweight and my motor is stock dowels and bolts, with original seals, so I'm not trying to blow it up.
Mazda put in those pinched sections on turbo piping on purpose. They are physocal power restrictors, to prevent too much power destroying other parts like transmission, differential, etc. SkyActivG Turbo engines have similarly pinched turbo piping.
I wonder if the bose sound system actually still sounds good, I'd assume it would degrade over the years. Also, keeping the fuel lines next to the power lines feels sketchy. Is the idea that the undertray makes it relatively safe from any scrape that could happen?
Hey @albon, try solid core wires for pin jumpers next time. Something like 20gauge or so. It'll make your life significantly easier for any car you ever need to do that with.
You can run a full exhaust on a power Fc because the base tune was made with that in mind. You can't do it on a stock ecu, though because of over boosting potential. Also, the airpump goes along with the factory catalytic converter because it helps the converter generate heat to burn off the emissions since rotaries run rich. You pulling off the airpump and reinstalling the factory cat is ass backwards.
You are 100% right good sir, the only reason I put the stock cat back in was just for safety until I could schedule a tune on the Power FC. The catless midpipe will go back on before we get to the tuner!
Nice work. The Power FC though you must go through an initialization process using the FC Commander. It learns the idle by running accessories and other things you have to do while the engine is idling. People say you also have to screw in the idle screw almost to the bottom. Google it and you will see. You should be able to beat that FRS without an issue. Stock horsepower was not 276 though on the US models, it was 252 horsepower. I wouldn't go full throttle with the Power FC on base map until you get it tuned. It can definitely run too lean and do damage.
Did a a smoke test and found that my lower intake manifold gasket is shot! Turns out that was my issue all along. Will take care of it in the next episode!
There were two different AC kits installed on FDs and there's no rhyme or reason as to which one you have. Denso were installed in Japan and MANA was installed in the US. The only thing they use that's exactly the same is the condenser. The lines and all that are routed the same, but literally every other part of the system is different, with different thread pitches and sizes on the lines. Different pressure sensors, different condenser mounting brackets, different evaporator, different separator, etc. And please tell me you're blocking the lower intake manifold every time you remove the upper intake manifold lol. Someone bought the battery kit from JP3 lol. They make great products.
According to my tuner, the base map on my PFC is more than capable of handling a stock fuel and stock boost setup like I have. Which ended up being very useful because we found out my lower intake manifold is leaking.
Better get rid of that cat before it melts down. Rotaries spew lots of unburned fuel out the exhaust and the airpump is required to provide oxygen so that wasted fuel can be burned in the exhaust system, both before and inside the cat. The air control valve is tasked with directing the air to the right place depending on conditions. (ports, pre-cat, main cat) Pumping that much fuel down the cat with no air to encourage oxidation will pretty much guarantee the cat melts down. Also, all fuel injected rotaries have insanely over complicated idle control systems. The surging is pretty much normal as the engine heats up, it will usually settle down once the engine is up to temp and the wax pellets, idle cams and air bypasses all exit the chat.
Hey Albon, if you’re looking for another idea for a new video(assuming you don’t have any) you could look into the world of police supercars c, I’d love to hear your thoughts on them, hell maybe even a specific one that you are drawn to the most
Did the continuously up & down idling get fixed? I had that same problem in my Mazda Familia GTR where it'd constantly go from about 800rpm to 1500rpm back & forth. In my case, it was becuase of a broken wire on the gearbox neutral position sensor.
Its a known issue with the FD RX7 electrical system that battery relocations will cause poor grounding with the ignition system. Running the battery ground to the engine block and tying it into the factory wiring harness grounds ensures that there won't be any issues with high amp draw components due to excessive resistance.
When you said reliably, then you lost me. Rotary simply can’t be reliable. I’ve owned mines for 13 years and average 32-44kmiles per engine. I’ve replaced 3 and rebuilt one. Nothing reliable about them. One(the latest one) being the crate engine. Same thing, 34k miles before seals go.
The white 94 that you might have seen on the channel a couple times has actually been going for quite a lot longer than that with a single turbo and lots of boost. Mine is at 65k miles and has really good compression! There are definitely a few more factors at play to keep these engines running.
Silver MKIV was sold after we got it running. MKV has been my daily and I've put over 70k miles on it. And the Red Monster was sold many moons ago after we completed it.
The RX7 has returned to the glory by Albon, one of the real car RUclipsr❤
The reason nothing is matching up is that you need to match the VIN to the correct Greddy kit. It looks like you have a 99 ' and newer kit.
This. No one messes with the S1~2 fd in Japan no more. So whatever is out there is for 99+ only
