Excellent for winter indoor painting! Best to you and your painting adventures in 2024….your friend Carol from Duxbury, Mass, USA 🎨❤️👏🏻
Hi Carol, Great to hear from you again. I’ve missed your comments! I agree with you, painting Portraits indoor is the perfect substitute for landscape painting in Winter. I’m looking forward to a great year of outdoor painting I hope you’re well my cousin in the states. Best wishes, James
I absolutely love how you apply the paint so the colours ‘mingle’ on the paper. It looks beautiful. The cerulean blue, ultramarine blue and burnt sienna look stunning together. Lovely painting. Thank you. 😊
James.... I woke up at 0300 thinking about what it was that you demonstrated that I HAD NOT been getting.... I viewed this last night and I think it was the brush work that I was missing ... the LONG strokes that you used to fill in that beautiful color to blend and mingle on the paper. My practice from the previous two lessons lacked proper moisture control of the palette mix and on the brush but now I see that the strokes them selves are SO IMPORTANT! Please talk about this more in the coming lessons. I will have to see how to buy you a super latte for this!

Love this eye opener on how to pencil in roughly, introduce color, and create in an impression of another object. It simplifies the process and makes it accessible. I also appreciate that you include info on using water. Thank you so much. I look forward to the next tutorial!
Hi Cheri, Glad that you got so much out of the video. I’m very excited for you that you’re moving on to a better place with your painting. Keep it up.! Hope you enjoy the Portraits. Have a happy New Year! Best wishes, James
Thank you for sharing your watercolor painting expertise. I loved your videos! A week ago, I began my watercolor journey and completed a 2-day workshop at a local community center. I’m now passionate about it. Can you recommend any books to build my foundational knowledge?
Another great demonstration. Thank you! I've been trying to practice your style of impressionism because I love how you handle watercolor and would love to paint the same style as you... It certainly is not easy but I plan to keep working at it. Am having lots of fun anyway. You know, it's about the journey.😊
Hi Bailey Glad that you’re enjoying the demonstration so much. It’s great to read about your enthusiasm to learn how to paint in an impressionistic Freer way. You’ll have lots of ups and downs, but keep at it and you’ll get there! Have a happy New Year Best wishes, James
I’ve been looking at a wooden model Black-tailed Godwit for a few years gathering dust - now I know what to do with it! Really enjoyed this latest James wonderful translucent colours extraordinary.
Hi Robert, That was perfect timing for you, your black tailed Godwit has been sitting there, waiting for you to be inspired. I hope you can give it a good go that painting it! Have a happy New Year. Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt James I had to get back in touch, I’ve been through your tutorial again - I love the way you ‘place’ colour on the paper and the selected use of white paint contrary to majority advice. Am now looking forward to portraiture.
Hi James, I really like the mixing palette you have. I have all the paints…but just needing the right palette! Hope to hear from you. Love from Singapore.
Hi Anermil, My Palette is really great, and I always enjoy using it. I did do a review on my Palette, so hopefully you can have a look at that It’s quite an expensive pallet, unfortunately, however well worth it. Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt Thanks for coming back to me. Yes I saw your review of the palette when I was binge watching your videos 🤣. I do like everything about the palette except for the price lol. It’s in my wish list surely.
Thanks for another great lesson. Been trying the apple exercise from your previous video but finding it hard to stop messing with the painting rather than making marks and leaving it as per your lesson. Think this is just confidence. Practice makes perfect. My paintings makes my children smile (Or laugh) also. Looking forward to diving into portraits. All the best for 2024.
Hi Mike , Glad that you’re having a go at the apples. Keep on training your aesthetics to know what looks right and what is beautiful. it is difficult to stop the robot of old habits. Glad that you’re looking forward to the Portrait videos. It will be great if you could produce a portrait of your children. Have a happy New Year. Best wishes, James
Van Gogh was amazing and much underrated for his intelligence. He has the reputation of being slightly mad, but I think he was much more than that. James.
@@JamesPotterAboutArt I never thought of him as mad. I always imagine that if I’d ever met him he would have been quiet in a kind way and slightly insecure, but artistically perceptive and enthusiastically experimentative, which I thought was a word but my spell checker makes me think I just came up with it 😂.
Thanks James really enjoyed your demonstration, a simple subject so easy to follow. I'm guessing the American painter who has impressed you is Charles Reid judging by your style anyway, must admit he's a favourite of mine as well. Like yourself he makes look so easy but of course as a amature I find it very difficult and end up with a muddy mess. So my pictures usually end up being like photo's that don't say anything artistically. Looking forward to your next vidio on portraits. Happy New Year to you and family. Martyn C
Hi Martyn, Thanks for your message, and I’m glad you enjoyed the demonstration. Charles Reid was a wonderful painter. Sad that he’s gone now. He is certainly one of many artists who have influenced me. Hopefully I can help you out with your muddy problems, which is mainly about aesthetics and knowing when to stop! I hope you enjoy my Portraits. Have a happy New Year. Best wishes, James.
Hi Claire, Good to hear from you again. Glad you enjoyed my latest video. One of my aims in painting is for the picture to look watery and wet. I’ll try and talk about cauliflowers in a forthcoming video, and how to avoid them! Have a very happy New Year! Best wishes, James
That was great, thank you James. I notice the palette you are using is similar to many other you tube artists but I haven’t been able to source one. Do you know if they are still available to purchase and name/manufacturer of them. Thank you
Hi Sam, Glad you enjoyed the video. The Palette I have is amazing, I would highly recommend it! It’s called a Binning Monroe Palette. Mine is made by the little brass box company in England. There’s also another company that makes it called Craig Young They are expensive about £500 but cheaper than golf clubs or many other hobbies and it will last forever. I did a review on mine a few months back so hopefully you can find my video on that. Have a happy New Year Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt thank you very much James. Yes that is expensive and Christmas has just gone - that means I’m going to have to be a good for a whole 12 months, that’s a long stretch of time. I’ve go the info now, so that’s good news 👍✔️
Hi Terri, Good to hear from you, thanks for your question. I know some techniques like wetting the paper before you start to paint, however, I like overall, a more dry surface as I feel like it can be more accurate with it. I’m also a fan of brushmarks and when the surface is too wet, sometimes those brush mask can disappear. I hope this helps. Best wishes, James
Hi. I never wet the paper for the first wash, then after that I mainly wait for the paper to dry off a bit, so I can paint on dryer paper. Painting in winter makes that difficult as drying is so slow. Hope that helps. Best wishes, James
Hi Lacamas, Great to hear from you again! Yes, my cerulean blue is made by Winsor and Newton. There is a link on my description for most of the paints that I use. It’s a wonderful colour and I hope you enjoy using it. Have a happy New Year Best wishes, James

Nice touch hurray, I like it….
Glad you liked it!
Best wishes, James
Another great demonstration. Thank you! I've been trying to practice your style of impressionism because I love how you handle watercolor and would love to paint the same style as you... It certainly is not easy but I plan to keep working at it. Am having lots of fun anyway. You know, it's about the journey.😊
Hi Bailey
Glad that you’re enjoying the demonstration so much. It’s great to read about your enthusiasm to learn how to paint in an impressionistic Freer way.
You’ll have lots of ups and downs, but keep at it and you’ll get there!
Have a happy New Year
Best wishes, James
I’ve been looking at a wooden model Black-tailed Godwit for a few years gathering dust - now I know what to do with it! Really enjoyed this latest James wonderful translucent colours extraordinary.
Hi Robert,
That was perfect timing for you, your black tailed Godwit has been sitting there, waiting for you to be inspired.
Hi Anermil,
My Palette is really great, and I always enjoy using it. I did do a review on my Palette, so hopefully you can have a look at that
It’s quite an expensive pallet, unfortunately, however well worth it.
Hi Mike ,
Glad that you’re having a go at the apples. Keep on training your aesthetics to know what looks right and what is beautiful. it is difficult to stop the robot of old habits.
Glad that you’re looking forward to the Portrait videos. It will be great if you could produce a portrait of your children.
Have a happy New Year.
Best wishes, James
That is beautiful James.
Hi Irane,
Glad you enjoyed it and find aesthetics beautiful.
Thanks, James
Van Gogh is right, it’s the painting that is fun. Drawing is intimidating and besides the point.
Martyn C
Hi Martyn,
Thanks for your message, and I’m glad you enjoyed the demonstration.
Hi James 😃 👋🏼. I hope you had a great Christmas!
Hi,
We had a great Christmas. Thanks and I hope you did as well.
Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt Thanks! Happy 2024!!
Have a happy productive New Year🎉
@@JamesPotterAboutArt Productive?! 🥱 no! 😴
Thanks, really interesting tutorial. Your paint is so watery, I don't understand why you don't get the dreaded cauliflowers all over it.
Hi Claire,
Good to hear from you again.
Thank you
Hi Sam,
Glad you enjoyed the video.
The Palette I have is amazing, I would highly recommend it!
It’s called a Binning Monroe Palette. Mine is made by the little brass box company in England. There’s also another company that makes it called Craig Young
They are expensive about £500 but cheaper than golf clubs or many other hobbies and it will last forever.
I did a review on mine a few months back so hopefully you can find my video on that.
Have a happy New Year
Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt thank you very much James. Yes that is expensive and Christmas has just gone - that means I’m going to have to be a good for a whole 12 months, that’s a long stretch of time. I’ve go the info now, so that’s good news 👍✔️
How come you don’t wet the paper first with water than add the color after you make your drawing?
Hi Terri,
Good to hear from you, thanks for your question.
Do you wet your paper or prefer wet into dry?
Hi.
I never wet the paper for the first wash, then after that I mainly wait for the paper to dry off a bit, so I can paint on dryer paper. Painting in winter makes that difficult as drying is so slow.
Hope that helps.
Best wishes, James
Is your cerulean blue made by Windsor and Newton or another brand?
Hi Lacamas,
Great to hear from you again!
Yes, my cerulean blue is made by Winsor and Newton.
There is a link on my description for most of the paints that I use.
It’s a wonderful colour and I hope you enjoy using it.
Have a happy New Year
Best wishes, James
Thank you!
