Since the Finest Hour ships are basically solid blocks of armor, I’m beginning to see the value in pure sabot rounds. They also taught me a lot about how armoring ships is more than just extra air pockets.

I find it to be pretty funny that some of these shells (fuseless penetrators and AP-HEAT) are actually incredibly meta now since on how well they do against armor targets and especially the compact, flying metabricks, which AP-HEAT does really well against
Edit: also fun fact, if your shell has enough kinetic damage or is a railgun, you can often just forgo the solid warhead bodies and just use an armor piercing cap, which makes fuseless penetrators and AP-HEAT even stronger bc all of those solid bodies can become HE bodies. I believe the BBS 5th season uses fuseless penetrators with it's railguns if I remember correctly.

Damage debugging is a really nice feature for seeing how your AP shells are doing, you get a nice green line showing exactly how deep the shell went before exploding.

  • @bongwatercrocodile315
    @bongwatercrocodile315 2 года назад +33

Note about penetrator shells, dont use flak with them. Flak warheads have 0.1 AP modifier while rest of the chemical warheads have 0.8 AP modifier. Replace flak with HE and you're golden. Also i've heard those smaller fuseless penetrator shells be called SAPHE for "semi-armor piercing high explosive" which i find a quite fitting name (its also an irl shell designation mainly used with autocannons)
edit: oh you noticed it later on with the video, my bad lol

I've made a couple of wacky shells that are definitely not the best but with the mod I use Aps addons are pretty good such as a similar hollow point emp (hollow, solid, emp, 13 railgun), full sabot (Sabot head, sabot, sabot, 13 railgun), and Shield disruptor heat (shield disruptor, emp, emp secondary heat, 12 railgun) all work well especially the sabot one as long as you know the ai location it can 1 to 4 hits an enemy paired with my 18rpm railgun design I use with them. Megalodon took 4 hits for example hitting from the side.

AP-HEAT is really the most effective of the bunch, though I like to build such shells differently. If you're not using a railgun, it's better to disregard solid bodies altogether and go for a 4 part shell, AP-HEAT-HE-Bleeder. That's how you get the most AP out of them on gunpowder.
As for sabot-payload heads, I don't think their extra AP is worth their 0.25x payload multiplier, you'd need to be shooting something made out of mostly ring-shielded HA to justify the loss against using a shorter AP head shell with more gunpowder. Since the changes, solid bodies seem mostly useful at increasing shell health rather than AP, moar gunpowder is generally the better way.

Railguns can do that with a ~49mm shell too, though it costs ~3000 energy per shot.

I don't think sabot payload shells are ever a good idea to use - the improved kinetic stats vs AP head/solid body is not worth losing 75% of your payload. AP head+3 solids+1 payload will probably have better performance in APxKD, more HP, and more payload than Sabot head+sabot body+3 payloads.

@@BorderWise12 I actually tested Pendepth Sabot vs AP against various campaign enemies (15 test battles with each round vs each target) when making a 12 x 14" gun battleship replica build, with no rails, and 6m loaders to fit in the hull.
I wanted to see if being able to pen 4m HA beams was worth the lower base damage and payload.
      The comparison was between:
      (AP + 3 solid + HE + Fuse + Emergency Defuse + Super Cav + 11.1 powder (5,999mm))
      Stats: 1075m/s - AP 29.8 - 12,553 Kinetic - 1190 HE 8.4m (pens 4.6 stacked metal (48))
      &
      (Sabot Head + 2 sabot + 2 HE + Fuse + Emergency Defuse + Super Cav + 11.1 powder (5,999mm))
      Stats: 1054m/s - AP 49.9 - 9,599 Kinetic - 827 HE 7.5m (pens 1 stacked HA (72) or 5.9 stacked metal)
(Sabot stacks additively with SuperCav not multiplicatively so you effectively only lose 2/3 instead of 3/4)
A sample of Results (avg over 15 matches):
Crossbones - 105.4s avg time to kill for AP vs 105.2 for sabot
(almost identical, the sabot's higher kinetic damage vs metal and the HA magazine armor made up for the lower damage against softer materials)
Trebuchet - 55.9s to kill for AP vs 65.6s for Sabot
(I thought the LAMS and thick front hull might effect things, butThe weak turret caps didn't need high AP to penetrate & the higher explosive radius of the AP tended to kill them faster, though the sabot had best individual times, with a 30s and 33s AI snipes.)
      Megalodon - 583.8s (9m 44s) for AP, and 494.6 (8m 15s) for Sabot.
(The sabot really shined here. The lower shell health didn't matter much because neither shell could reliably penetrate the LAMS coverage above water, but both could make underwater hits even with single shells. The deeper penetration of the Sabot meant that it could reach the LAMS compartments, and engine rooms in 1 hit, and could reach the magazines and AI in 2 hits on the same hole, while the AP needed 2 and 3. The time advantage would be even higher in favor of the Sabot if not for a single extremely lucky match where the AP ended the match at 170 seconds by landing 3 consecutive 12 gun salvos in the same spot into the engine compartment, through the turbines and batteries, and then into the AI box)
