HomeKit works on your local network, so anything that works with it - including this hub, shouldn’t require a connection to the outside internet. That’s said, things like Siri on HomePods will not work if you ask them to control a device. You would also not be able to connect to your home network if you’re away from home. Some manufacturers app also require an internet connection, if you want to control devices that use their own app.
Great review and good channel. Thanks for sharing. Can I check with you since I’m new here to smart projects. 1. This Zemismart hub is zigbee base therefore I don’t really need to rely on WiFi and it can work without Wifi, right? 2. However if I want to control from anywhere outside the house, I would need Wifi right. How does this work then? Thanks. 3. Does this only works Zemismart products or any HomeKit compatible products?
Hi Patrick, happy to hear you like the video etc. So to answer your questions, first of all, the ZemiSmart hub only actually uses a wired connection to your router with the provided ethernet cable, so it doesn't use WiFi - I mention WiFi in the video, based on the info I had at the time, which is not actually correct. Any ZemiSmart device that uses Zigbee to connect to this hub, does not use WiFi, so WiFi is not involved between the device and the hub, and the hub to your router & home network. This also means that as long as your internal network is working, these will continue to work even if you cut internet access to your router. If you want to remotely access devices that connect to the hub, then you will be using WiFi - either via mobile internet (4G/5G) or if you're connected to someone else's WiFi network (office, restaurant, hotel etc). In the case of ZemiSmart alone, any connection you make between the Tuya app on your phone, and the hub, is all via Tuya's cloud servers, so the server is the 'middle man' between the phone/app, and your home network. If you're connecting solely via HomeKit, then you would need what is termed a 'Home Hub' - an Apple TV4 or later, a HomePod, or a HomePod Mini. HomeKit allows remote access to your devices via these Home Hubs, which then allow you to control your HomeKit devices, including ZemiSmart ones that are connected to the ZemiSmart Hub. As regards devices that are compatible with the ZemiSmart hub, generally speaking, it will only work with ZemiSmart's own Zigbee devices, and even then you would have to double check whether some are exposed to HomeKit or not, as some device categories aren't supported by HomeKit, and so there may be a Zigbee ZemiSmart device that works with the hub, but is not exposed to HomeKit. It seems most of the ZemiSmart Zigbee devices are indeed exposed to HomeKit, but you can check on this page to be certain - www.zemismart.com/collections/device-work-with-zmhk-01.
@@homekitnews thank you so much for taking time to respond. Very much appreciate that. Just to double: What I plan to do is to have smart light switches installed, which works with Zigbee and homekit. Can I confirm? 1. I need a hub like ZemiSmart to work with Zigbee device and to have a local control, right? 2. For any Zigbee device, it is much faster response time, right? when pressing the switch, light comes on almost instantly? 3. I would also need a 'Home Hub' - an Apple TV4 or later, a HomePod, or a HomePod Mini to control this remotely via WiFi if I want to, right? 4. Which smart switches would you recommend that work on Zigbee and HomeKit app? Thank you very much in advance and sorry for too many questions. New here.
@@patrickstevensonn2664 hi Patrick, no need to apologise, I’m happy to answer your questions. So to start, all Zigbee child devices ( sensors, switches, bulbs etc) require a hub to work. Some devices will work with any generic Zigbee hub, but for ZemiSmart devices, Aqara devices, and Hue devices, for example, if you want them exposed to HomeKit, you need to use their respective hubs. So if you wanted Aqara wall switches and expose them to HomeKit, you need an Aqara hub, and so on. You will get local control as well. Generally speaking Zigbee devices respond quicker than the equivalent devices using either WiFi or Bluetooth. For wired Zigbee light switches, these should act as normal switches, with much the same speed as a dumb switch, as they still use the same relay operation found in dumb switches, but with the added option of being able to control them remotely. For remote access via HomeKit you would need a hub. The cheapest option right now would be the HomePod Mini. My recommendation for smart switches would be Aqara, as they offer both neutral and no-neutral options, for both US and EU switch boxes. They don’t offer three way switch functionality, but there are ways around that.
@@homekitnews your comment help me alot, since i'm also an apple homekit user i want to add few questions too if you dont mind 1.If i use the device from several brand like ZemiSmart for lamp, aqara for switches, both of them also has zigbee protocol, should i get 2 zigbee hubs like 1 for ZemiSmart and 1 For Aqara? or i should i choose only 1 between that 2 ? 2. @@RickyAngg hi, if you’re using Apple HomeKit, then you’d need Aqara hubs for Aqara child devices and a ZemiSmart hub for ZemiSmart and Tuya certified devices, although ZemiSmart now have an updated hub, so don’t buy this one. I’ll be posting a review next week. I’d actually suggest sticking with Aqara though. As regards how many, I would suggest one hub per floor. The signal for sensors can go further than you’d expect, but it’s better to keep sensors tied to hubs on separate floors. If you’re not in a hurry, I’d also Suggest possibly waiting until Aqara release their M3 hub in early 2024.

For wireless switches there are quite a few, but if you’re looking for a wired switch, I’m not sure there are any. The only switches I’m aware of that can be programmed to do something other than turn a light on or off, are the Aqara switches with neutral.
