Cool Bro! I’m buying or actually just agreed to buy a Ruger American Ranch like yours but was getting hesitant due to the 16.1” barrel & accuracy. You just showed me it’s totally capable so I’ll now be buying with much more confidence. Thx a ton!
Bought a Colt AR-15 when I was young brand new for $140 (msrp was like $160 at the time), mils of 5.56 at the time were going for $35-$40, so could literally pull the trigger all day for what people spend on a movie & dinner today. Good times.
Such a short, light, handy rifle handicapped by many with a big honking 3x9 or 3x12 scope with traditional duplex reticle.. You should seriously look into getting the Primary Arms ACSS 1 - 6 x 24mm with its now famous 0 - 600 yard BDC ranging reticle. I won't write an essay about the features.. Get on RUclips and watch a few of the hundreds of reviews raving about how easy it is to make hits with that scope from 10 yards all the way out to 600 without touching the turret adjustments.. Its illuminated, its rugged as hell, and it comes in under $300. As a knockaround rifle you might also want to consider one of their budget ACOG Prism scopes with the same reticle in a fixed Prism scope that comes in under 6" long.. They make a fixed 3X and a fixed 5X with the same BDC ranging reticle.. Watch BRENT videos on these scopes.. He goes in depth on the ranging features as well as the BDC reticle.
Thanks for the heads up. I have seen the PA ACSS scopes, but I dont think they would work for my use ( I am not shooting/ranging 2 legged targets) and I believe illuminated scopes are not allowed for hunting in my state( this may have changed). I would consider one for an AR or such but for my bolt guns, I prefer a typical small footprint reticle with good magnification for smaller targets. While shooting this video (steel targets) I used the BDC reticle without making adjustments, however I normally use a range finder and dial dope for smaller targets to insure a more precise shot and clean hit. Just depends on what your intended use is I suppose.
Got one with the ar mag great little gun, love mine got a hog at 512 couple of months ago. I run the Q half Nelson on it sounds sweet I carry it horseback shooting coyotes.
Just ordered this gun. By the way, nice shooting in that much wind. I'm putting a SWFA ss tactical fixed X12-42 MOA scope on it. Hoping to reach 800 yards in optimal conditions off of a bench. I'm feeling pretty good about it after watching your video.
Ruger offers purty darn good rifles. They're cost effective but don't scrimp on what matters most, the bbl and action. It's biggest problem, as with most budget guns, is its somewhat flimsy stock. I prefer their Predator in .223Rem. On the cheap, I use Rockite (literally it's cement) to stiffen the fore end and add a bit of weight to the the butt stock. A bipod is nice and I've come to appreciate the value of those offered by CVLife. Glass is important and finding one that has decent magnification clarity for long range that holds its settings is what matters most. On a budget I've used Cabela LR 4-16x44 ($200) but prefer the better clarity and durability of the Arken 4-16x44 or 6-24x50 ($250-$350). Ammo is super important and handloading is the way to go and adds a satisfying DYI to the accuracy process. I use N140 powder, 75ELD bullets, Starline brass, CCI BR4 primers - these get the job consistently done to 800 yards on a 12" dinger, no lie. After awhile with the stock Predator I added a Timney 1.5lb trigger and a Magpul Hunter semi-chassis stock ... that purty much made the gun into a really good long range sniper, albeit such light projectiles are far more susceptible to windage issues, but SO cheap to reload, super fun to shoot, and "no problem" :) Heck, I just swapped the glass out for an Arken 5-25x56 ... now we be Shootin'! ;)
Stock "Stag Arms" three chamber I believe. I took it off and replaced it with a Gamma VG6, a little less noise deflection, the Stag was ridiculously loud and a bit overkill for 5.56.
Great video. Lmao $84 Bushnell scope. Did great on your own. Would love to see you test more distances only because I’m looking at purchasing one. Thanks
Not posting any more gun content to this platform. This video is one of my top viewed every month and violates no terms but was "not suitable for ads" years ago. Tired of the double standards and loosely applied "guidelines".... having said that this has been a great rifle and probably the one I use the most.
I was seeing right around 1" groups right out of the box with reloads. It likes heavier bullets. Factory ammo was kind of all over the place, cheap bulk 223/556 55grain FMJ was anywhere around 3-5" groupings, good enough for plinking steel on the cheap. I did end up glassing the fore end of the stock to stiffen it up and opened up the barrel channel. Saw a minimal increase in accuracy less flyers, still right around 1" bit under on a good day. The down side is the weight increased almost a pound, and the stock still flexed further back by the mag well anyway. I carry this all over while hiking in the winter and kind of wish I had not added the glass but it still hammers coyotes easy enough at 2-300 yards.
Really on the fence between the 5.56 or the 7.62x39 for the American ranch. Had my heart set on the 7.62 until I saw this. Thanks for your time and effort in filming. Quick question. What make or model is that muzzle brake ?
The muzzle brake came off a Stag Arms AR, it worked really well but was damn loud on that short barrel. I use this for small game hunting so I swapped it out for a single chamber/baffle design not quite as effective but doesn't blow your fillings out either. Great little rifle!
The bipod was just a cheap butler creek or some similar. I don't remember which scope it was ( iirc bushnell... its in the comments somewhere) but I removed it because the eye relief was not great. I have since removed the bipod, filled the stock fore end with glass and I am running a Vortex 2-7x32. Nothing fancy, just a good knock around rifle.
Good question, I think it depends on your definition of accuracy and the intended use. I could write a book on this rifle ! If you are looking for pinpoint accuracy I will tell you my experience with mine... Not pinpoint. I am able to get a consistent 1" group at 100 yards and that is with handloads made for this rifle and I filled the front stock with fiberglass. I have more accurate rifles in the same price range. Having said that I really like this rifle for lots of other reasons and it is a keeper for me. It is 5.56 and eats anything I put in it. I call it my scout rifle. Not in the normal tactical way most people think, but when I go looking for new areas to hunt, camp, ride bike etc this rifle goes with. Its short barrel limits velocity but is very nice to pack. I have racks on my motorcycle and my mountain bike for carrying this rifle. On the motorcycle the rifle is just shorter than the handlebars so it is not sticking out beyond, fits perfect. To be honest it is probably the rifle that sees the most trigger and travel time that I own. I also like the fact that the twist rate is better suited for heavier bullets, alot of the more accurate 223 rifles are set up for lighter bullets. So for me it is a pack around rifle/truck gun sort of that can take a beating and I dont mind getting it dirty. BUT when I want pure precision, sub MOA I take something else. Hope this helps !
I think it was, I ended up trading it off, the clarity was great and the reticle was clean and thin but the eye relief was too short causing me to choke up on the stock while in prone even with the scope mounted as far back as possible as can be seen in this video. It was a shame because for the money it really was a great scope for the money.
I believe it is from Stag Arms I don't recall exactly, I have since traded it out for a "VG6 gamma". The 3 chamber was great for recoil but was ear shattering, esp when hunting.
I have slowed way down, when the price of ammo and components go up I tend to go back to archery and Air rifles for recreational shooting. I have had several of the Ruger American Rifles, all have been pretty good shooters. They seem to be a good balance of price and features and plenty of calibers to choose from.
Bushnell Trophy XLT 3-9x44mm I ended up trading it off, the clarity was great and the reticle was clean and thin but the eye relief was too short causing me to choke up on the stock while in prone even with the scope mounted as far back as possible. I am running a Vortex 2-7x32 now, its decent but has a thicker reticle. The bipod is either a butler creek or harris lightweight, I don't recall and have removed it since.
I want to shoot with this guy and listen to him yell “no problem!” And “impact baby!” When I finally hit a target. This guy is doing it the right way. Having a great time enjoying his 2nd amendment rights. Love this video, looking to purchase this rifle as my first bolt action now.
Thanks, It is a great rifle for dragging around in the rocks and dirt! I tend to get a little excitable fishing or shooting, at least carrying the camera around I dont feel so weird yelling out loud !
Mine is stock, no issues with it chambering. If you have to fight to chamber rounds or close the bolt you could have major issues. I would call Ruger and talk to them about it. I have had very good luck with them standing behind their products.
The safe answer is: Only fire the ammunition the firearm is specifically chambered in or stated by the manufacturer. Having said that, it is generally accepted That firing .223 Remington is safe to fire from a 5.56 nato chambered rifle. It is not generally recommended to fire 5.56 in a 223 Remington chambered rifle (there are exceptions). This is one of the reasons I purchased this rifle, the ability to have a bolt action rifle with a chamber that could fire any load 5.56/223 safely and could handle a variety of weighted bullets including the heavier 60-70 grain stuff more often loaded in 5.56. There is lots of information available for further research.

@@Scablands_Scavenger Nice! I just purchased this rifle and put a vortex corssfire 4-12 x 40mm on it but seems like it might be a little big for the rifle I plan on taking it out shooting tomorrow
ZEUKI1 thanks for the reply I just picked one up and I was wondering when you use brass more than once does your bolt get stiffer? When I fire new factory ammo out of mine it’s smooth but when I fire brass after the first time it gets stiff
I have not had any issues with brass yet, I have one set of cases for this rifle I have loaded maybe 3-4 times. I dont load hot though. I do full length size and start each batch of once fired by trimming just to keep things consistent. Is this with one type of brass or different brands, 556 and 223 ? any high pressure signs at all ?
Hmmm I was Thinking pressure signs/abnormal case wear more related to a chamber issue, I have in the past run across a few posts of guys having head spacing issues with the Ruger rifles, just a thought. Hope you figure it out, I just went though something similar with barrel for a rifle, turned it was not reamed properly but I wasted alot of ammo trying to figure out the problem !
Purely for the challenge. Reloading, calculating drop, adjusting for wind, temperature, pressure and mirage. There is a lot with long range. As far as hunting being under 300 yards I guess it depends on what you are hunting, where you hunt and what you are using. 300 yards is not long range for western hunting with a legal large game caliber, especially in the flatlands. Personally I do not normally hunt big game with rifle I use a bow, and 30 yards is the sweet spot.
Any scope recommendations for this rifle in almost 2023? I'm about to pull the pin on one of these up here in Canada, as our anti-freedom, woke Trudeau government is trying to ban almost every semi-auto firearm in the country.
In the video I was using a Bushnell Trophy, it was nice but too short of eye relief. I swapped to a Vortex Crossfire II, 2-7X32 with BDC reticle. It is a clean little budget scope (around 120$ nowdays) with great eye relief, simple usable reticle and fairly lightweight (16 oz I think). I liked it enough I put one on my other Ruger American in 7mm-08. Something a little more tacticool and bit smaller would be a 1-6 or 1-8 LPVO by Sig, Vortex, Burris or PA etc. If you want something a little more rugged I have heard good things about the Primary Arms Prism scopes in 1, 2.3, 3 or 5x.
nice shooting... Just a side question., I take it that you have the ruger rotary mag version of the rifle. so do you think that there's a difference between that and the AR mag version?
Honestly I didnt know they had put the magazine fed one in production yet... I dont have any issue with the rotary mag ( other than the cost of spares). For what I use the rifle for I actually prefer the flush mag. I hope they do a better job with the mag lock-up than some other bolt guns have done, leaving the magazine floppy and hard to chamber rounds with a full mag some times. I can see how some people will really like the feature especially if you have lots of mags already. I wonder if they will keep selling both.
I had the Ruger mag version, it had no problem feeding, I sold it to a friend to turn around and buy the AR mag version. I have a Vortex Viper 3-9x40 on mine, it shoots great. I had about a 100 round break in period before it consistently shot 3/4 moa with the 50gr v-max and 55gr Hornady match ammo I hunt coyotes with. Best gun for the money hands down. I have several 5.56 and .223 rifles, the Ruger gets shot more than any of the others. My next one will be the predator in 6.5grendel.

@@Scablands_Scavenger Nice! I just purchased this rifle and put a vortex corssfire 4-12 x 40mm on it but seems like it might be a little big for the rifle I plan on taking it out shooting tomorrow
nice shooting.
how many grains of what powder are you using
I am running in the neighborhood of 24+ grains of IMR 4895 right now with the 68 bthp . Still playing with it though.
ZEUKI1 it’s with different brass brands I resize my brass and I use 25 grains of h335 so I don’t think I load it too hot
556?
Yes, this is the 556 model, pre AR mag stock.
zeuki1 are you still making paintball howizters?
No, stopped building those years ago. Too many hobbies.

Good shooting!!
I want one
Dang!
hunting is usually under 300 yards so what is with long range?
Purely for the challenge. Reloading, calculating drop, adjusting for wind, temperature, pressure and mirage. There is a lot with long range. As far as hunting being under 300 yards I guess it depends on what you are hunting, where you hunt and what you are using. 300 yards is not long range for western hunting with a legal large game caliber, especially in the flatlands. Personally I do not normally hunt big game with rifle I use a bow, and 30 yards is the sweet spot.
Boomer alert....
Probably doesn't believe in "high capacity" mags and ARs either
@@Scablands_Scavenger Thanks for the reply! 🍻
Good job
nice shooting...
