Mt Wilson 2024 New Years Day Ride! (without shuttle) We climbed to the top and bombed down 1/1/24

- We got rain on Dec 30 so most of the trails were still wet. One of the only trails in So Cal that gets better after the rain is Mt Wilson. This is because the terrain is decomposed granite, when the trails get wet it soaks up the water and becomes so tacky, the trails are not muddy at all and you will not have any mud or dirt stuck on your tire, its amazing.
I met Spencer at the Crankbrothers Christmas ride and he lives at the base of Mt Wilson and we talked about going for a ride after the next rain so it worked out perfectly to go on New Years Day.
To save time we decided to climb up instead of shuttle. To climb up it takes a little over an hour and to shuttle up in a car it would take about 50 min but the time saving is when your done, because if you climb up you can just head home but if you take a shuttle up you have to take a 2nd car up to fetch the shuttle. Thats another 1 hr up and 1 hr down.
Our climb took longer than normal because we took a few stops so Spencer could show me history of the mountain. It was dope and the climb is not as bad as I thought. If you want to save time and have a full fat E bike I highly recommend it.
I havent ridden Mt Wilson for a long time and I forgot how scary the exposure is, I kept catching myself looking over the edge and not feeling comfortable. This was also my first time riding the Timp Peak here and the switchbacks were way too tight for my dual crown. I was probably only able to make 5 switch backs and had to get off my bike for the other 30. But I still had a blast, it was a great way to start off the year!
I rode El P on New Years but didn’t climb all the way up to Mt Wilson. It was packed with hikers on Brown Mtn and El P but the trails are perfect now. Planning on riding up to Inspiration Point and riding Merrill and Sunset before finishing up with El P this weekend. The climbing up Chaney and the pavement to Sunset is the worst part for me.
Yeah everyone had their New Year resolutions but as you know most people fall off their goals first week so it should be a lot less hikers this weekend 🤣

I hit El P 2 days ago and came across 2 separate dudes trying to climb up the trail!
Yeah I really don't get it, I know it's not officially a dh only but there's the fire trail to climb up I don't know people would want to climb El P, trails are to narrow and there's too much exposure I don't think it's safe to climb up the dh trails

I used to ride these trail in the 1990s on 26er hardtails with rim brakes and cruddy suspension forks. I know well and good what you mean by exposure.

Yeah it's been almost a year, traffic is so bad now I rarely go to LA but this option saves 2 hrs so maybe I can do it more often
It’s crazy how in the US you have shared tracks. That doesn’t happen here in Australia, it would annoy me 😂
Yeah I think it would be safer if there were hiking only and mtb only trails but unfortunately we have to share so the best way is to be nice even to those mean hikers because we don't want to loose our trails

Yeah this is was my go to trail back in the day after the rain but since covid and the shuttle no longer running it was too difficult to self shuttle, now e bike up is a great option 👌

I am not sure what Millard trail is but there is a short blue trail above El Prieto that we call single track to Millard camp that you can easily climb up from fire road. I would just go on trail forks or internet and I'm sure you will find out
