The Music Man (1962) almost didn't happen because Meredith Wilson said, "No Robert Preston, no movie."
Yes, his performance makes my personal top 10.
his energy throughout that production is mazing and absolutely convincing
@@coldlakealta4043 just makes the musical just magical . With how Robert went and had the chemistry with the actors
@samanthakennedy9514 I know Shirley Jones spoke very highly of Preston during filming, and she also tells a hilarious story about filming the footbridge scene.
@@emilyholasek63 Preston had no idea she was pregnant with her first child.
Joel grey winning the Oscar and Tony for cabaret is amazing
Yul Brynner for "The King and I" and Danielle Brooks for "The Color Purple" should've been on this list!
Yes THEY most certainly should have been. 😢
Tim Curry is THE Frank N. Furter. While many other talented performers have stepped into his shoes, Curry's is the most iconic portrayal.
Yesssss! All hail Tim Curry!
Barbra definitely deserves the number 1 spot. I think Robert Preston deserves to be in the top 10.
I'd add William Daniels in 1776. To you he may be Mr. Feeny, but to me he'll always be the definitive John Adams, as that was the first thing I ever saw him in. He's excellent!
One of my favorite movies! He’s awesome in it.
Me too you gotta love old obnoxious and disliked Johnny
Where is Yul Brynner and the
The king and he owned that role for decades
100% agree. I'd also add Howard da Silva as Benjamin Franklin.
"Hello, Gorgeous!" Absolutely 💯 that Barbra is #1. Nobody ever embodied a role so well to make it nearly impossible for anyone to ever attempt it again for over 50 years. Fanny and Barbra are linked forever.
Whether on Broadway or in film musicals are just so magical ❤❤❤❤❤
Yep. #1 had to go to Streisand, and for reasons beyond her Best Actress win for her film debut. The film was a huge success--the top grossing movie of 1968. The soundtrack would reach #12 and remain on Billboard's Top 200 chart for 108 weeks. (In spring of 1964 the Broadway version would chart at #2. That fall Streisand's "People" album would go to #1 and the single to #12, giving the film a built-in hit song associated with Streisand before she'd even been offered its lead role.) The film version served to seal-the-deal and make the association between Streisand and "Funny Girl" singular and enduring. It would be over 50 years before a revival would see Broadway, almost failing until Lea Michele, an actress and singer who evoked Streisand after spending seasons on the hit series "Glee" building that evocation (not only with Streisand, but specifically with "Funny Girl"), was able to step in, save it, and carry it to some modicum of success.
I’ll give a justifiable shout out to Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar! Not only did she originate Mary on the concept album she also originated the role on Broadway and toured with the show AND was in the movie version! What else does a girl have to do?! Her voice was cool, beautiful, soothing and unique! She belted when she needed to and didn’t over sing the part. She was perfect!
Yul Brynner for The King and I should have been included.
It's definitely Bárbara Streisand. Happy monday night, Emily. Take care and God bless you. Greetings from Colombia to you as well.
The execution of the 'cast then and now' concept in your video is absolutely outstanding, immersing us in the bygone era of 1960s Hollywood and then offering an intimate and moving glimpse into the lives of these actors today.
Robert Preston should have made the top ten as well as Yul Bruner in The King and I.
Rex Harrison makes My Fair Lady. It's one of my all time favorite movies. Robert Preston also embodied Harold Hill. Matthew Broderick's turn as the "Music Man" was embarrassing.
The lack of Reneé Rapp on this list is criminal, at the very least deserves a special mention. Iconic on both stage and screen as Regina George!
Yess! I was seeing if someone had written this!
You know if there is ever a Top 20/30 List for this list, I wouldn't mind seeing these people get on the list:
.Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal and Wilson Jermaine Heredia from RENT
.Richard O'Brien, and Meatloaf in The Rocky Horror Picture Show
.Roger Bart, and Gary Beach in The Producers
.Barry Dennen, Yvonne Elliman, and Bob Bingham in Jesus Christ Superstar
.Ted Ross in The Wiz
.John LLoyd Young in Jersey Boys
.Zero Mostel in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
.Renee Rapp in Mean Girls
.William Daniels, Ken Howard, and Howard De Silva in 1776
Not sure about Ben Platt in Dear Evan Hansen though because.......you know
Mabel King too in The Wiz (1978). She also reprised her role as Evillene from the stage musical.
Judy Holliday in "Bells Are Ringing."
Her last film, she nabbed the Tony over Julie Andrews (My Fair Lady) & Ethel Merman (Happy Hunting).
Robert Preston in Music Man should be #1
Agreed. Robert Preston never sung a note until he trained for his role, and he was phenomenal at it!
Was honestly expecting at least an honorable mention of Ben Platt for Dear Evan Hansen.
I love Dick VanDyke! ❤
I never knew until just recently that Joel Gray is Jennifer Gray's Father
I do feel that both Gary Beach and Roger Bart should have at least been mentioned when talking about the Producers, seeing as they also reprised their roles for the films. Especially when they were both nominated for the Tony for them, (with Gary Beach winning)
I love Victor/Victoria!
If straight plays were included in this list, you'd have to include Viola Davis for Fences and Jack Albertson for The Subject Was Roses. Both of them won Tonys and Oscars for their roles in those productions.
Great choice!
Very very great epic list I like it a lot very very great job mis mojo one of my absolute favorite list ever 😊❤
Great choices. Everyone is offering up the choices that were missed!!! LET'S RUMBLE💓🤩🔥🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
it's a crime there was no mention of Yul Brynner
Bea Arthur with Mame.
So we are going to ignore Renee Rapp who played regina in the Broadway show mean girls and She reprised her role as Regina for the Musical movie adaptation of mean girls who should have been in the list In my opinion
Because of the nature of the thing, this is at most an honorable mention, but Jonathon Groff as King George in Hamilton. He'd already left the cast when they filmed it and he came back specifically so they could do the original cast. Hamilton is a bit of an odd duck in this lineup because it was filmed as a theater production, but they did do some filming that couldn't have been done if they hadn't filmed without an audience for part of it.
Proshots don't count as movies
@@fashionablechangeling1988 that's why I said "at most an honorable mention". However, this was debated for various awards with some entering it as a movie (Emmys and Golden Globe) and some barring it as a movie (Oscars).
While Ben Platt was amazing at playing Evan Hansen on Broadway, he probably should have allowed Andrew Barth Feldman, who also played the character on stage, to step into the film, since he was 18, and had both the experience and youthful appearance.
I think his and his daddy’s egos were too big
The movie will never fail to baffle me with that casting decision. Even when I saw the movie, Amandla Stenberg and half of the cast who played the teens could pass as teens despite most of them being in their early to mid 20s.
I think the pandemic had a lot to do with it AND the fact that Ben was a huge part of what made DEH such a cultural phenomenon. The movie was already going to be a very niche market. It's a relatively new musical to already get a movie version, and a lot of the hype around it was Ben's performance. Without him, the movie doesn't get made YET. And like I said, the pandemic pushed the movie back til Ben was too old, but at that point, recasting him would have disappointed too many people who wanted to see Ben specifically, and people who didn't know anything about it would have been turned off because all they would hear is how the guy who originated the role got bumped.
Gwen Verdon in Damn Yankees!
Renee Rapp? She was the last Regina on broadway and reprised the role in the movie adaptation
Yul Brynner for the king and I should’ve been on this list.
Other honorable mentions
Bea Arthur Mame
Rosalyn Russell Auntie Mame
Ellen Green was so perfect she was also in pump up the volume
All of rent film cast is perfect
Carl Anderson personified Judas
His songs are my favourite 😻
Excellent musical
It really is disappointing to see that Samantha Barks didn't even receive an Honourable Mention for her turn as Eponine in Les Mis.
Robert Preston should have gotten an Oscar nomination but somehow was overlooked. Broadway originators of big roles frequently took home the Oscar.
Tony winner John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli on Broadway and in the 2014 Jersey Boys movie.
Oscar AND Tony winner Viola Davis for “Fences”, and Oscar and Tony nominee, Danielle Brooks for “The Color Purple”.
I LOVED that Chris Columbus used 6/8 of the original broadway stars for Rent. I wish more directors who want to make stage plays into movies follow the same formula, or at least reach out to the original cast first and if the original cast pass, THEN cast whoever they want…
It might have been 7/8 if one of the missing cast members hadn't been pregnant (or so I've heard)…
@@ericgjovaag7958 I think Daphne Rubin Vega was pregnant and I think Fredi Walker wasn’t offered the role due to her age, but did request that an African American plays Joanne
How is Yul Brynner from The King and I, not in this list?
Funny Girl on broadway/as a broadway show is so much better than the movie imo.
cooool
I would also add Topol in Fiddler on the Roof, John Raitt in The Pajama Game, William Daniels and Ron Holgate in 1776, Vivian Blaine in Guys & Dolls, and Ethel Merman in Call Me Madam
Chaim Topol wasn't in the original Broadway cast of Fiddler. The role of Tevye was played by Zero Mostel on Broadway in 1964 and Chaim Topol was Tevye in the West End production in 1967.
@@stuartm6069 Correct
@@stuartm6069 and for the rest of his life, reaching into hundreds of performances of Tevye
@@coldlakealta4043Topol performed his role more than 3,500 times from 1967 through 2009. So, not hundreds of times but THOUSANDS. Not the first Tevye but more than likely will be the only one playing him the most. I wanted to see him play it so badly. I was so sad when he passed. Thankfully he's in the film.
@@stuartm6069 It should have been Mostel or Bernardi in the movie, and not Topol!
I love in the heights movie so much
Viola Davis from Fences should have been on this!
Actually Ted Neely was an understudy in the original Jesus Christ Superstar Broadway show. Same with Carl Anderson. Jeff Fenholt and Ben Vereen were the actors who respectively played Jesus and Judas in the Broadway production. Barry Dennen, Yvonne Elliman and Bob Bingham, however, were actors from the Broadway musical that reprised their roles in the film adaptation.
I wish Kristen and Idina were doing Wicked.
Jesus Christ Superstar is BTW one of the most underrated Movies ever😊
I’m so so glad the horrible decision to cast old looking Ben platt as a high schooler in dear even Hansen was left off lol
Should have been Top 20.
Sorry but I feel that this list should contain the man who won 2 Tony Awards and the Oscar for his role: Yul Brenner as King Mongkut in The King and I.
Aw, no love for Ted Ross' Cowardly Lion and Mabel Ross' Evillene in "The Wiz"? (And no, they're not related…)
I guess Rex Harrison didn’t sing in the stage version either?
yes, he sang but he refused to use a recording studio for the film version. They did live takes for all of his numbers. Quite astounding.
So, no Ben Platt or Colton Ryan in DEAR EVAN HANSEN?
I agree with most of these picks, but I am mystified by the inclusion of Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in "The Producers." The film is pretty dull, and their performances in it would leave anyone who did not see them on stage scratching their heads about why they were such a big deal. Even more baffling are making Robert Preston in "The Music Man" an honorable mention - I would put him in the top five - and the non-inclusion of Tony- AND Oscar-winner Yul Brynner in "The King and I." One other honorable mention (all right two): Zero Mostel and Jack Gilford for "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." They were hilarious!
Time stamps?
Murray Head is the original Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar.
The real reason Rex Harrison was so great at playing an egotistical prick is because he was one in real life.
Yep
Where's Bea Arthur in Mame?
I'm guessing she wasn't included because of the fact that the film version of Mame was a flop with both critics and audiences, despite having also been directed by its original stage director Gene Sakes, who was also Bea Arthur's husband at the time. The main resason for its failure was its star, Lucille Ball. She lobbied the studios hard for the part of the titular role as Mame, even though many people, such as the show's composer Jerry Herman, felt she was completely wrong for the part due to her lack of singing talent. Bea Arthur herself even said that Ball was miscast for the part, despite being wonderful to work with.
@@alexmeyer5260 almost half of what's in this list can also be considered flops with the audience and critics alike as well.
Why isn't Dear Evan Hansen in the list? ( Ben Platt did a great job
Tim Curry 4ever ❤
No Ben Platt?? 😂
I'm guessing he wasn't included because of the critical and audience backlash against Dear Evan Hansen.
No William Daniels in 1776??!!!! Heresy!!!
rent - whoopi goldberg sucked lol went straight to vhs.
Ben Platt as Evan Hansen in Dear Evan Hansen. Anyone who says different, can have one of these.🖕
Request : saddest cartoon network character backstory
Gloomy tall red one armed imaginary friend guy
Most of this list is typical Millennial misinformed B.S. where's Yul Brynner? Merman in Call Me Madam? Judy Holliday in Bells Are Ringing? To mention just a few.
