What a trip down memory lane that is . Went to the game as a 16 year old with 3 gents from Dereham, Norfolk; Mick Triggs RIP; his brother Chris and one other. Parked the car after 8 hour drive near the ground; got fleeced by a local urchin for a fiver to "mind the car"; suffered the game in the middle of the Scots supporters; celebrated the goal with a quiet "Yup" then 8 hours back home! Scotland were off to Argentina for the World Cup so atmosphere was fantastic... England stayed home that year; and got on with our lives !
Thanks for the game! I didn't realize Paul Mariner was already an International by this time. Knew nearly all the players, and it was amazing how the subsequent Argentina Campaign would be so hilariously bad, until the Holland game!
At least we got there as in 1974 too. And they done their best & at least left with a high in the Holland game. In 74 we didn't lose one match but still lost out.
This game showed why the Home Internationals with the high cross and fight-ball was no preparation for playing against continental opposition. Against Peru it was 1-2s in front of the defence and defenders going along the ground who weren't accustomed to it and we know the result. Jack Charlton was also taken in - 'I think Scotland will do well'.

I was at this game, just 9 years old. We played Wales on the Tuesday night, 72,000 at the game, brilliant goal from Derek Johnstone, calamitous own goal from Donnachie. Then on to the big game on Saturday, just under 90,000 at the game. Looking back, Scotland actually played quite well, I always recall quite negative press after this. Then it all went downhill….

Looking at this game, I came to the conclusion that Alan Rough was selected because of his powerful left footed kick, that could literally reach Joe Jordan's head on the other side of the field. There's literally not other reasons to pick him as first choice goalie other than that.
The Lion Rampant was the favourite flag of Scotland fans in those days rather than the Saltire. It stood out more in a crowd too. And hardly anyone wore a kilt to a Scotland game then but now it's almost compulsory.

Italy, Kempes aside, Italy were by far the best team in that world cup and England went out in the qualifiers to them finishing second on goal difference. England beat Hungary 4-1 just before the world cup started. Both teams were good enough.

Nice to see Willie Johnston looking dangerous, running at the defence whenever he got the chance and Hartford working his socks off. Kenny Dalglish was almost invisible for most of the first half. If ever a team never deserved to win a match, this is it.
Just watched this game and it seemed to me that the pitch looked to be playing very slow. Lots of passes not completed. It looked as though the ball was sticking in the grass....
You can tell how big this fixture was back in the 70s. My dad travelled down from scotland to wembley for the 77 game, the year i was born. Also says after a heavy defeat to england (75 i think) he had to go for a walk to calm down ha ha! I started watching these games in the late 80s and you could tell they were declining in their appeal by then.

The Welshman, Emlyn Hughes, was one of England's all time greats. Bit like Michael Owen, really. But no matter, the best two players from these Islands have been George Best and Gareth Bale, neither of whom are/were English. Pointless arguing this fact, so don't bother.
