The sound of this recording is almost unbelievable. And the play is as majestic as you can expect from Furtwängler playing Beethoven! Great recording!
Yes, it's great. Very dramatic too. I'll admit I have to make an effort to clear out the thought that this was recorded in a city that was truly at the Heart of Darkness (yes, some of the people who attended this concert may have been involved with crushing the Warsaw ghetto uprising a year later, an unspeakable paradox) but there is no denying the courage and dedication of Furtwängler and the Philharmonic.
unbelievably terrible maybe
When Furtwaengler conducts Beethoven's Symphony No 9, l cries.
Just at the beginning,l'm in tears!
Don't cry. He didn't conduct so bad...
Absolutely nothing better!!! THE BEST sound the best atmosphere!!
Furtwangler's variation and liberty with tempo never disappoints.
The greatest interpretation of the greatest symphony by the greatest conductor in history
Of course this is not the greatest, even Furtwangler would not agree with you, since this interpretation is a demonic one, a way to express his refusal to cooperate with nazism.
This is totally true that this recording expresses Furtwangler’s refusal of the nazi regime. But this is considered nevertheless by many critics as the best interpretation ever. Simon Rattle wrote a long text on this recording a few years ago to explain that this is the only recording that expresses what Beethoven wanted.
I will read this text, then. Tks to answer.
And this recording is not demonic at all. It is always described as apocalyptic, which is totally different. There is a condamnention of the nazi regime: especially the end of the first movement. It sounds like the announcement of the final judgment and has been compared with Michelangelo’s fresco of the final judgment in Rome.

Oh my God! Sublime! What a perfect way to celebrate Beethoven's birthday this year!
And then we continue to consider WHO would have been in the audience that day...There is video from another performance of Beethoven's masterpiece played on Hitler's birthday the next month, and in that one, Goebbels is clearly seen in the audience.. Heydrich could easily have been there too, if he came on a visit from Prague. The paradox of these superb performances of a work that appeals to brotherhood and peace being played during the darkest and most shameful age in German history is just mind-boggling.
What always stuns me when I listen to the Ninth is that the totally deaf Beethoven heard every theme, phrase, and note with a clarity that no other mortal can ever hope to attain.

Beethoven would have felt both troubled and intrigued by the fact that such a great interpretation of his masterpiece was played at the darkest and most disgraceful hour of German history..
Glad comments aren't turned off. Loved performance! Thank you for posting.
No one like him ... no one .. Furtwängler here is in an other world , an other planet, out of our time, but inside Beethoven ‘ soul
I don't like him. I love him. If I want it or not, this is devilish seduction to me. This is my internal soul and body. Ready for everything, even the worse.

Forever an eternal masterpiece in the spirit of freedom, unity and the will to self-determination.
I suspect that Beethoven himself would have appreciated your words.
My Master (Sufi) had that Predilection for Furtwangler and now that the material world has fallen on me like a stone, I have remembered and here I am, curing myself with these Masters
Greatest memory from my trip to Berlin: my tour guide breaking out into Ode to Joy at the statue of Frederick the Great at Bebelplatz square. After he finished, a little old man came around from the other side of the statue and applauded. The most spectacular part of this performance is the expression of the many moods in distinct layers.
The most powerful interpretation
All items of interest in this world are but attempts to perfect something, a perpetual striving, yet this, and this alone, is perfection. Beethoven is God, Furtwangler was his translator.
Beethoven is God and Furtwängler is his prophet.
For me Furtwangler is Beethoven.
Furtwangler choice of tempos is incredible. The composer himself would be pleased for he used to say that inspiration has its own tempo.
Furt is also out of this world with Bruckner and Brahms.
I agree with you 100%. He is the giant conductor of the 4 Bees "Bach; Beethoven, Brahms, and Bruckner
He is also a Wagnerian conductor of the highest order.
Beethoven’s conductor.
Sublime in Brahms, Bruckner, and yes, Schubert, Furtwangler’s 1942 traversal of the Schubert 9th is colossal.
This interpretation renders at best the true definition of joy: something we truly enjoy after long periods enduring and suffering its exact opposites, namely anger, sadness, loneliness, hopelessness and all sorts of pain!
The best version ever
Hands down the best I've heard.
The epic concept Beethoven means to convey in its most glorious form.

It's great, I love it. Though I'm not sure that's what beethoven would have wanted(exept for the first movement). You can clearly hear how furtwangler hated the nazi party and said a huge "fuck you" with this interpretation.

You can hear the world this rendition was made in during this recording. The whole performance is informed by a sense of looming, titanic strife, in my opinion.

A classic performance of the Eroica (also, the one where I personally got to know the work - we had the LP album at home) was taped by the Berlin PO and Karajan, just a few weeks after the Cuban Missile crisis in late 1962. Every member of the orchestra would have known that if a new global were to break out, Berlin would have been one of the first places to come under fire.

Several things stand out: the speed; the variation in interpretation of the parts; the heavy use of percussion; and esp. the power of the chorus. Has the spirit of war crept into everyone's performance?
The way the percussion overpowers the rest of the orchestra in the final coda is probably one of the most powerful things I've ever heard. Never heard the ending played that fast either. Maybe it's what Beethoven wanted? Furtwangler just cut them loose and they took it.
It is a unique tempo and performance. One critic called it "hysterical." I would say "emphatic." We have to remember that Furtwangler was rebuking the very man who was applauding him.

@@louise_rosethanks.. & fore reading my comment.! Yes.
@@opera93 Furtwängler, of course, was no Nazi (I'm sure you knew that) - he knew early on, that Hitler was really not what Germany or Europe needed. Their first face to face encounter in early 1933 descended into an angry shouting match, and Willi told his wife that he now knew Hitler was a danger to the country and could not be trusted at all (or something to that effect). But he remained in Germany not least to try to protect its leading orchestras (including the Vienna PO) from Nazi interference.
It was a controversial choice, for sure, but I think he did the right thing.
The first movement; never been done better. Berserk and transcendent.

Astonishing recording quality! I think that I'll make a recording of it and EQ it a bit. Take out a bit of the bass.
Does anybody know if possible to find a names of BPO musicians of that period?
I always wonder if approaching this recording blind (not knowing the circumstances of it until after) might color people's response to it.
