I started both TYT and MR around the same time in 2017. In my opinion, TYT lost me when they started dedicating time and energy towards their detractors instead of the mission I thought we shared.

I got hooked in to both MR and TYT around the same time in 2015. I always liked MR's style and perspective more (especially that of Michael Brooks), but respected TYT. This has all been very sad, but I'm glad MR is around. You won't regret subbing to MR.
I think there is a lot of bad blood between Cenk and Sam stemming from Emma switching over to MR. Emma's MAGA rally interviews were very popular and rolled in lots of revenue for TYT. If rumors are true, and with Emma still being pretty young, i bet she was getting significantly under paid too. So her leaving was very likely a significant hit to TYT revenue.
You should check out Cenk on a RUclips video at an airport where he gets his flight delayed. He throws a temper tantrum like a toddler. It doesn’t seem to dawn on him that the people he’s shouting at are just workers and it’s not their fault his flight is delayed. He then finds out that he’s going be denied boarding the plane because he’s acting so irrationally, which is hilarious

When I did watch TYT Ana brought up her low pay multiple times as well as the size of her home,she thought her home was too small. I respect Cenk for being loyal to Ana but he has a choice to make; either he's loyal to the truth or loyal to his friend in this situation. Sam is like that amazing musician that gets far less attention than he should and Cenk is like the so so musician that knows how to market himself to maximize his income. Yeah she started mentioning how she would never own a home that she liked right before she started with the birthing person thing, surprised no one really brings this up to her, she had this revelation that she wasn’t paid enough to buy a house and instead of fighting the right wing policies that caused it so everyone can get a house she switched everything she claimed to believe in to make more money so she could get a house alone. It’s sad but very common these days which is why not enough people are fighting for affordable housing.

I went to TMR maybe 5 years ago after watching TyT for maybe 3-4 years before that. Before That I listened to public radio. Calling Sam a grifter is just baffling. The thing is that Sam isn't even like the best interviewer ever. He just has good guests on, and asks the right questions. Michael Brooks was far better and more talented than Sam, but unfortunately we lost M.B. Sam knows how to conduct an interview without losing your shit. That's all you need to do. This whole damn thing is ego driven which is wild. We all know that the left has no real power in America, so this turn by TyT is all about themselves.

Yeah, it used to be slim pickings, but there's more than a couple of great channels now. Secular talk and majority report led the algorithm to recommend the serf times and some others. They make tyt look so bad in comparison, although it's pretty much Cenk and Ana sinking the ship over there.
I’m enjoying your analysis on this stuff. Apart from the fact that I’m kind of appalled at Cenk and Ana’s pivot (like the Democrats they are punching Left and saying it is the Left’s fault they lost the election), particularly because they have no foundational basis in their theory of so-called leftist/progressive politics. You don’t need to have read Marx, Engels, Lenin or Gramschi to have a basic understanding of leftism, although I would really recommend that people do that. It’s interesting that Ana has read some of those things and does no better. Remember when she co-hosted the Jacobin RUclips show with the late great Michael Brooks and then with Nando Vila? You don’t have to look very far into those episodes to find her talking about dialectical materialism. She knows exactly what she’s doing. At the very least, since she is or was such a huge fan of Michael and the work he was doing up until his untimely death, she could follow his simple but profound dictum of being kind to people and ruthless with systems. I think if you use that rule you don’t have to read huge academic tomes and essays to understand what being the on the left is about. It is not about throwing certain demographics under the right wing Bus because they make you feel uncomfortable. If they make you feel uncomfortable, ask yourself why. It may mean challenging yourself, doing the work on yourself that never stops, no matter how long you live. Much of C&A’s politics is the politics of grievance against the left. It’s very whiny and “me, me, me“. Sam and the folks on The Majority Report do not consider themselves to be the “true Left“. They are leftists a of various shades and like Francesca, they consider the left to be organises, labour unions, activists and the like. The first half of the MR show is always interviews with academics, unionists, organises, authors and news; the Fun Half is the second part of the show. Sam always talks about The Majority Report playing of defence against the right. That’s why MR goes after Jimmy Dore, Joe Rogan, Dave Rubin, Ben Shapiro, other right wing political influences and politicians. They don’t stint on going after Democrats and others who call themselves left or liberal but he is trying to get MR into those right wing algorithms to try to get at least a few of their audience members to watch MR videos. And MR always stresses organising and running for Local office. The other thing I will just say, is that the word “progressive“ is a potentially loaded and nebulous one. A couple of years ago I watched a really interesting conversation on Left Reckoning between David Griscom, Matt Lech and Emma Vigeland on the problems with describing oneself as a “progressive“. They said that they do not think of themselves as progressive but as leftists (they are both socialists and Emma describes herself as a Democratic socialist; both David and Matt are members of DSA). They pointed to the progressive, Nomiki Konst’s’ run (for New York State office in which her entrance into the field caused a lot of problems for the leftist who was running (and I think who eventually won after Nomiki dropped out). Being a progressive is a much more malleable descriptor than being a leftist. I am much more likely to trust someone who calls themselves a leftist (who follows the Michael rule, see above) then as a progressive because there political foundations are solid or at least they should be. There are lots of people who see themselves as progressive who are far more easily swayed on particular topics that are no-brainer leftist issues. Such as, the rights of transgender people or undocumented immigrants. This is not to say that you should not scrutinise and hold people on the left to account equally. In general, not all progressives are leftists but all leftists are progressive. I would recommend reading Thomas Frank’s “The People, No: A Brief History of Anti-Populism” which looks at the history of American populism from the late 19th century and the possibilities around those historical movements.

With regards to the Majority Report's structure, while it is not collectively owned, Sam encourages his employees to have their own projects which he has no ownership in (ESVN and Left Reckoning), and makes a point of promoting them on every show. I also get the sense that he allows them to freely use the MR studio for those projects.

He doesn’t get on many right wing shows because they all know his debate skills are overwhelming due to his ability to recall even obscure political happenings in congress. Majority Report and Sam Seder is in it for all the right reasons. He's also grown the show in a responsible, sustainable way... Cenk has extended and Over extended himself, over and over again. This requires "Outside Investment" to keep the doors open. It's not easy turning down that Sweet, Sweet Conservative Cash Cow... It's undeniably lucrative for taking stances that support the oligarchy.

Sam Seder will tell you exactly where he stands on every issue. He will admit when he does not know for sure and detail exactly what he wants to see change on. He will tell you his best case wishes and then lay out how he thinks we can get closer to said goals. He is liberal in the way that is the root of leftism, he deals in reality and with facts to try to move folks towards a more egalitarian society that is best for the greatest number of folks.
Where is Cenk's empathy directed? This answer is ALWAYS objective - and the question is applicable at every second of every scenario. Cenk's narcissism has been central and constantly on display during his recent appearances. His emotional responses to being challenged by his colleagues and contemporaries - as well as the dismissal, projection, deflection, and hypocrisy present in the defense of his positions say it all. I, personally, haven't seen him say or do anything particularly sadistic yet (BTS might tell a slightly different story) -- but as this shift plays out: let's see who he's morphed into by the time his community solidifies again. If his ego or agenda won't allow him, at some point, to admit or accept that he's lost the plot, he'll NECESSARILY have to keep pulling further to the Right in order to defend himself. There were enough nails in the coffin before this, but this last week was a prime example. The difference between the right wing reaction when Leena Khan was confirmed ousted and the H1B spat. Right-wing populism was a social logic developed to counter left wing and economic populism cooperation. They can and will show their displeasure but only in a reactionary and racist way, and because they have no principles of organization, they can't apply pressure and just get rolled over by capital interest.

As you say, "grifter" implies financial gain, although it doesn't has to. I'm not sure Cenk is aiming at financial gain or whether he genuinely hopes he can convince MAGA to work with him. He may be grifting for power, influence, attention instead of for money. He may also be totally genuine in his goals: He'd be completely wrong in how he goes about it, not challenging MAGA on the hypocrisies of their leaders while he has their ear. But he's certainly disingenuous in how he goes about attacking his critics and former allies, straw-manning them to the high heavens.

He talks about protecting trans people, but wanted Democrats to avoid trans issues entirely up to the election, because he and Ana decided that if Democrats spoke up for trans rights the Democrats would lose the election, then pointed to people like Sam who strongly defended trans rights as the reason Kamala Harris lost. But Kamala Harris and the majority of Democrats running for federal office were just as hesitant to actually address trans rights and the massive attack by Republicans, both in state laws and trying to get the national viewpoint to regard trans people as inherently threatening, as uninformed Americans. Cenk seems to have been motivated by the presence of trans athletes in sporting events, just wanting them excluded. But once you say that a minority can't be part of one thing, it's easy to exclude that same minority from more things. Sam, Emma, and the others at Majority Report all vociferously state that they don't want to start saying anyone is automatically excluded just because of something about their identity. That's just one issue. Cenk claims to be "the true left", and is super aggressive with anyone who challenges him, even mildly. Francesca Fiorentini, who works for TYT but also has her own channel, had Cenk on her channel to discuss things, which became a two hour run with Cenk either patronising "Franny", or shouting over her. Francesca has Chinese relatives who either immigrated to the US or are the descendants of immigrants, and when she expressed her fear of the detention camps Donald Trump has repeatedly said he's going to throw immigrants in before deporting them, Cenk told her that Trump didn't mean it. Trump, who did create camps full of children, some that were still infants, who had been separated from their relatives and parents. Even Republicans got a little squeamish about those camps, but I doubt any Republican will care two jots if Muslims or Chinese or other non-white immigrants or descendants of immigrants (unless they work for Elon Musk) are locked up in makeshift prisons and never even tried to deport them. Those detention camps can be treated just like prisons that are run for profit with inmates becoming slave labor. But Cenk said "Franny" was being silly. This is part of why people are questioning whether TYT is still progressive or leftist.

I started both TYT and MR around the same time in 2017. In my opinion, TYT lost me when they started dedicating time and energy towards their detractors instead of the mission I thought we shared.
Sam is authentic, he’s not out for himself. I love his wit and his intelligence. He’s at the top of his game. How can anyone just switch allegiances like Cenk, it doesn’t make sense. The Union busting if true, should be a red flag.

I got hooked in to both MR and TYT around the same time in 2015. I always liked MR's style and perspective more (especially that of Michael Brooks), but respected TYT. This has all been very sad, but I'm glad MR is around. You won't regret subbing to MR.

I think there is a lot of bad blood between Cenk and Sam stemming from Emma switching over to MR. Emma's MAGA rally interviews were very popular and rolled in lots of revenue for TYT. If rumors are true, and with Emma still being pretty young, i bet she was getting significantly under paid too. So her leaving was very likely a significant hit to TYT revenue.

When I did watch TYT Ana brought up her low pay multiple times as well as the size of her home,she thought her home was too small. I respect Cenk for being loyal to Ana but he has a choice to make; either he's loyal to the truth or loyal to his friend in this situation. Sam is like that amazing musician that gets far less attention than he should and Cenk is like the so so musician that knows how to market himself to maximize his income. Sam is very intelligent, thoughtful and empathetic towards others as is Emma, Cenk and Ana can be very vocal, sorry they are very vocal and reactionary and aren't thoughtful in their approach, Cenk may try though. Yeah she started mentioning how she would never own a home that she liked right before she started with the birthing person thing, surprised no one really brings this up to her, she had this revelation that she wasn’t paid enough to buy a house and instead of fighting the right wing policies that caused it so everyone can get a house she switched everything she claimed to believe in to make more money so she could get a house alone. It’s sad but very common these days which is why not enough people are fighting for affordable housing.

I went to TMR maybe 5 years ago after watching TyT for maybe 3-4 years before that. Before That I listened to public radio. Calling Sam a grifter is just baffling.
The thing is that Sam isn't even like the best interviewer ever. He just has good guests on, and asks the right questions. Michael Brooks was far better and more talented than Sam, but unfortunately we lost M.B. Sam knows how to conduct an interview without losing your shit. That's all you need to do.

Back in 2017, my friend used to listen to TYT all the time and i just couldn't stand Dore so i tried to find a counterpart and thankfully i found Secular Talk and never looked back.
Yeah, it used to be slim pickings, but there's more than a couple of great channels now. Secular talk and majority report led the algorithm to recommend the serf times and some others. They make tyt look so bad in comparison, although it's pretty much Cenk and Ana sinking the ship over there.
I’m enjoying your analysis on this stuff. Apart from the fact that I’m kind of appalled at Cenk and Ana’s pivot (like the Democrats they are punching Left and saying it is the Left’s fault they lost the election), particularly because they have no foundational basis in their theory of so-called leftist/progressive politics. You don’t need to have read Marx, Engels, Lenin or Gramschi to have a basic understanding of leftism, although I would really recommend that people do that. It’s interesting that Ana has read some of those things and does no better. Remember when she co-hosted the Jacobin RUclips show with the late great Michael Brooks and then with Nando Vila? You don’t have to look very far into those episodes to find her talking about dialectical materialism. She knows exactly what she’s doing. At the very least, since she is or was such a huge fan of Michael and the work he was doing up until his untimely death, she could follow his simple but profound dictum of being kind to people and ruthless with systems. I think if you use that rule you don’t have to read huge academic tomes and essays to understand what being the on the left is about. It is not about throwing certain demographics under the right wing Bus because they make you feel uncomfortable. If they make you feel uncomfortable, ask yourself why. It may mean challenging yourself, doing the work on yourself that never stops, no matter how long you live.
Much of C&A’s politics is the politics of grievance against the left. It’s very whiny and “me, me, me“. Sam and the folks on The Majority Report do not consider themselves to be the “true Left“. They are leftists a of various shades and like Francesca, they consider the left to be organises, labour unions, activists and the like. The first half of the MR show is always interviews with academics, unionists, organises, authors and news; the Fun Half is the second part of the show. Sam always talks about The Majority Report playing of defence against the right. That’s why MR goes after Jimmy Dore, Joe Rogan, Dave Rubin, Ben Shapiro, other right wing political influences and politicians. They don’t stint on going after Democrats and others who call themselves left or liberal but he is trying to get MR into those right wing algorithms to try to get at least a few of their audience members to watch MR videos. And MR always stresses organising and running for Local office.
The other thing I will just say, is that the word “progressive“ is a potentially loaded and nebulous one. A couple of years ago I watched a really interesting conversation on Left Reckoning between David Griscom, Matt Lech and Emma Vigeland on the problems with describing oneself as a “progressive“. They said that they do not think of themselves as progressive but as leftists (they are both socialists and Emma describes herself as a Democratic socialist; both David and Matt are members of DSA). They pointed to the progressive, Nomiki Konst’s’ run (for New York State office in which her entrance into the field caused a lot of problems for the leftist who was running (and I think who eventually won after Nomiki dropped out). Being a progressive is a much more malleable descriptor than being a leftist. I am much more likely to trust someone who calls themselves a leftist (who follows the Michael rule, see above) then as a progressive because there political foundations are solid or at least they should be. There are lots of people who see themselves as progressive who are far more easily swayed on particular topics that are no-brainer leftist issues. Such as, the rights of transgender people or undocumented immigrants. This is not to say that you should not scrutinise and hold people on the left to account equally. In general, not all progressives are leftists but all leftists are progressive.
I would recommend reading Thomas Frank’s “The People, No: A Brief History of Anti-Populism” which looks at the history of American populism from the late 19th century and the possibilities around those historical movements.
The big difference between Sam and Cenk is that Sam has integrity. Cenk doesn’t.
Cenk looks more and more unhinged. Cenk has always been about the money he likes to call himself a capitalist which is always a bad sign. However TYT has been progressive and is still somewhat progressive but it’s definitely moving to the right. The most obvious grifter is Ana Kasparian who now says she’s a Trad wife something she called out before the allure of the big payday from why I left the left gig beckoned her. This might have something to do with Cenk losing his mind, she seems to have pulled Cenk along he is desperate to keep her on TYT. She’s looking for the exit if some billionaire is willing to cut the checks

With regards to the Majority Report's structure, while it is not collectively owned, Sam encourages his employees to have their own projects which he has no ownership in (ESVN and Left Reckoning), and makes a point of promoting them on every show. I also get the sense that he allows them to freely use the MR studio for those projects.
Sam also allows them to be in a union. Something Cenk fought against for TYT staff.

He doesn’t get on many right wing shows because they all know his debate skills are overwhelming due to his ability to recall even obscure political happenings in congress. Majority Report and Sam Seder is in it for all the right reasons. He's also grown the show in a responsible, sustainable way... Cenk has extended and Over extended himself, over and over again. This requires "Outside Investment" to keep the doors open. It's not easy turning down that Sweet, Sweet Conservative Cash Cow... It's undeniably lucrative for taking stances that support the oligarchy.
IMO, Cenk is being honest, but his grievances with people that have criticized him on the left is making him go in a really weird direction. He is being very naive about the right, but I honestly think he thinks he’s doing the right thing. Ana is a whole other case, I think she’s taking advantage of a friend in Cenk. She is kinda having him run cover for her. She obviously wants more money, and is trying to ingratiate herself where the money is. I think it’s odd that even when the Dems do something good, she is always there to put them down for it, while defending maga as much as she can. Sam Seder will tell you exactly where he stands on every issue. He will admit when he does not know for sure and detail exactly what he wants to see change on. He will tell you his best case wishes and then lay out how he thinks we can get closer to said goals. He is liberal in the way that is the root of leftism, he deals in reality and with facts to try to move folks towards a more egalitarian society that is best for the greatest number of folks.
He has said he wouldn't put a label on it, but definitely on the left
Where is Cenk's empathy directed? This answer is ALWAYS objective - and the question is applicable at every second of every scenario. Cenk's narcissism has been central and constantly on display during his recent appearances. His emotional responses to being challenged by his colleagues and contemporaries - as well as the dismissal, projection, deflection, and hypocrisy present in the defense of his positions say it all. I, personally, haven't seen him say or do anything particularly sadistic yet (BTS might tell a slightly different story) -- but as this shift plays out: let's see who he's morphed into by the time his community solidifies again. If his ego or agenda won't allow him, at some point, to admit or accept that he's lost the plot, he'll NECESSARILY have to keep pulling further to the Right in order to defend himself. He's a politician unmasking himself. Enjoy the movie.... sorry about the spoilers ;)

There were enough nails in the coffin before this, but this last week was a prime example. The difference between the right wing reaction when Leena Khan was confirmed ousted and the H1B spat. Right-wing populism was a social logic developed to counter left wing and economic populism cooperation. They can and will show their displeasure but only in a reactionary and racist way, and because they have no principles of organization, they can't apply pressure and just get rolled over by capital interest.

As you say, "grifter" implies financial gain, although it doesn't has to. I'm not sure Cenk is aiming at financial gain or whether he genuinely hopes he can convince MAGA to work with him. He may be grifting for power, influence, attention instead of for money. He may also be totally genuine in his goals: He'd be completely wrong in how he goes about it, not challenging MAGA on the hypocrisies of their leaders while he has their ear. But he's certainly disingenuous in how he goes about attacking his critics and former allies, straw-manning them to the high heavens.
Great commentary here I just don’t think we should have landed here as progressives. Get in those rooms and talk. Pool that money together and work. Yes there’s more money over there but if we stand together and not fall apart during these times we can accomplish something.

I know this sounds juvenile, but it really feels like jealousy of Sam Seder by Cenk. Hasan is so right that Cenk is so caught up in the minority of supposed annoying leftist accounts that harras him & Ana. The fact someone who claims to be the Biggest leftist in america is acting like this really is clowish. I can only rationalise it as him being annoyed that people treat Sam like how he thinks he should be treated, just for being the 1st big left youtube channel. I appreciate both sides of the argument. Sam is an ideologue and intellectual…and a wonderful debater. However, his leftist rectitude can get in the way of practical solutions. Cenk is becoming a practicalist (new word?) This view can be seen as more populist, such as his view on crime or transgender issues. J don’t think he is betraying anybody. He’s changing. The Left-Left needs to relax.
Cenk (that's how he spells his name, but it's pronounced as if it starts with a "j") seems to try to have his cake and eat it. He talks about protecting trans people, but wanted Democrats to avoid trans issues entirely up to the election, because he and Ana decided that if Democrats spoke up for trans rights the Democrats would lose the election, then pointed to people like Sam who strongly defended trans rights as the reason Kamala Harris lost. But Kamala Harris and the majority of Democrats running for federal office were just as hesitant to actually address trans rights and the massive attack by Republicans, both in state laws and trying to get the national viewpoint to regard trans people as inherently threatening, as uninformed Americans. Cenk seems to have been motivated by the presence of trans athletes in sporting events, just wanting them excluded. But once you say that a minority can't be part of one thing, it's easy to exclude that same minority from more things. Sam, Emma, and the others at Majority Report all vociferously state that they don't want to start saying anyone is automatically excluded just because of something about their identity.
That's just one issue. Cenk claims to be "the true left", and is super aggressive with anyone who challenges him, even mildly. Francesca Fiorentini, who works for TYT but also has her own channel, had Cenk on her channel to discuss things, which became a two hour run with Cenk either patronising "Franny", or shouting over her. Francesca has Chinese relatives who either immigrated to the US or are the descendants of immigrants, and when she expressed her fear of the detention camps Donald Trump has repeatedly said he's going to throw immigrants in before deporting them, Cenk told her that Trump didn't mean it. Trump, who did create camps full of children, some that were still infants, who had been separated from their relatives and parents. Even Republicans got a little squeamish about those camps, but I doubt any Republican will care two jots if Muslims or Chinese or other non-white immigrants or descendants of immigrants (unless they work for Elon Musk) are locked up in makeshift prisons and never even tried to deport them. Those detention camps can be treated just like prisons that are run for profit with inmates becoming slave labor. But Cenk said "Franny" was being silly.
This is part of why people are questioning whether TYT is still progressive or leftist.
