How Long Does The STIHL GTA 26 Battery Last? (Not Very)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 сен 2024
- The STIHL GTA 26 looks like a million bucks (or $149.95, more accurately), but how long will the 10.8 volt battery last? We test it three ways with disappointing results:
Real World Test #1: 7 minutes 44 seconds run-time. (starts 1:53)
Real World Test #2: 9 minutes 11 seconds run-time. (starts 28:42)
No Load Test: 18 minutes 19 seconds run-time. (starts 9:40)

Brad, So I used this tool for a day (Loaner from my dealer) and found that it wasn't something that would work for my company. The tasks that are associated with this tool are the same tasks that you can accomplish with a set of pruners or a pole saw, in my opinion much faster. Great video!
Very accurate statement! This tool is going to have a VERY small audience.
Yeah, struck me as something I could do with a Silky Saw just as fast, with no more work and not have to worry about chain sharpening, safety, batteries and the like.
Much easier to use than Silky pruning saw, especially in larger branches.
I have no idea what you did wrong, but after I fully charged my Stihl GTA26, it last 28:16 (minutes and seconds). I love this pruning tool. It is amazing!
28:16 of work or of actual cutting? I am skeptical but open minded on that one.
He is being in my opinion is wrong I love my little machine
I purchased a GTA-26 for use on my offroad equipment (snowmobile and SxS). We often run on abandoned logging roads in both winter and summer and find ourselves having to deal with smallish fallen trees and branches across the trail. While I always have a full sized chainsaw on the machine to deal with anything big, I have set the GTA-26 up in a drill holster that I can quickly pull out and lop off a branch or deal with a sapling across the trail. So far I have found the GTA-26 works exactly as I hoped it would. I am able to lop off annoying branches without leaving the seat of my snowmobile and easily cut through saplings up to about two inches. I have not tried the GTA-26 in extreme cold weather yet but at -5C the battery did not appear to suffer any climate related losses. I have two spare batteries on order but so far I am very happy with the little saw's runtime and performance.
As for using it in a commercial application, I agree that most will likely find the GTA-26 woefully inadequate.
Thanks for testing the run times for us.
Hey, this is super helpful, thank you! If you would, please consider posting this same comment on the full review video. I know it would help folks in the future. Mind me asking how much they got for the extra batteries?
@@CopperCreekCuts I paid $50.00 (Can$) for each extra battery which is about $35.00 US$. They are not really common yet so they likely have to be special ordered.
Had mine a few weeks and watched the video. Not sure if I would use it like that. More to trim branches and cut up bush. So far I've need very please with it. Another battery is only £30, so may get a couple of extras.
I think this is marketed to the homeowners or folks who really like to garden. I wouldn't buy this for my landscape crews, but I would buy it for myself in my yard. Maybe they put this out there first to see how it does before they do one more commercial use.
You are correct. Multiple times it says for homeowner use only in the manual.
I know those trees feel highly disrespected. Like, "I know damn well this guy isn't cutting us down with that little ass chainsaw! " 😅🤣🤣🤣😂
Perfect for a single woman with acreage. By the time I am too tired to go further, the battery dies. It’s just right. This was never meant for a landscape company.
Haha, that is OK, you can always finish another time! :)
This would be a great tool if you just want to hang on office wall for conversation starter lol ! Thanks brad for putting it out here for us !👊🤔🤔✌🤟
LOL You aren't wrong!

Oh wow. A "chainsaw" where you're not worried about having enough sharpened chains/bar oil/gas to complete the job, instead, do I have enough batteries. Thanks for the update.
Haha, that is a good way to look at it! :)
I like the saw but they need put a bigger battery. this would work for me just to cut a few limbs here and there. I'm going to purchase one. good review my friend Brad
Full review next week, this was just the run times! :)
Hey Brad , thanks for sharing, great video. 👍
You are more than welcome! Thanks for watching!
The battery lasts for 45-60 minutes for me when I'm cutting/trimming branches. That is non-stop cutting, but I'm usually exhausted before the battery runs out!
Do you mean you worked for a total of 45 minutes or the device RAN 45 minutes?
Thanks for the amazing demonstration. I feel this tool is best for branch pruning rather than trunk pruning. Cutting dried palm fauns not so good. agree? (Hendrika)
Depends on how many palm fronds, I suppose. It did pretty good on the ones I tested.
Wonder if Stihl will come out with higher capacity batteries like the Milwaukee line has. What's the duty cycle rating on it.
I am not sure, I will have to check the manual.
The battery and the styling of the tool makes me thing that it was make by Milwaukee or the main company. I wonder if that m12 batterys will fit. They have nice large ones that are 6 ah and I use them in my small Milwaukee hacks all and they last a good bit.
Hate to say this but I “saw” this a mile away 😂😂😂😂. Thanks for the video.
Haha, very nice! :)
That thing looks sweet, can’t wait to buy one, it would be perfect for pruning small trees if you are on a ladder and you just want to clean it up, thanks for the review
Definitely has its place! :)
i'll just buy new batteries for my 18volt nicad Porter Cable Recipsaw. With it & a Skill The Ugly blade the combination has served me well for 12+ years or so.
thanks for the good review, I am disapoonted with the run time on this thing.
If it works, no need to change it, right?
I'm just not a Stihl fan of any type. I generally prefer Echo products for heavy duty jobs, WORX battery products for light duty. Always good info on your videos Brad👍
I appreciate the feedback, thank you!
You surely need two batteries to work longer times. I use a Revolt 230V powerbank to charge the first battery while using the second. Normally that works out great. The recharge takes about 20 min, so you can work as long as your powerbank has power. A battery is 40 Euro. Greetings from Germany.
Good tips, I need to snag an extra battery!
The battery died so quick probably because he kept holding it in most of the time, but still good video.
Looks ideal, 10 minutes is a lot of cutting in reality. Considering each cut is under 5 seconds conservatively. I know my arms would be aching after 120 cuts. Two spare batteries and you could be good for the whole day. At £150 I imagine it would pay for itself in a few uses with how efficient it would make you.
Depends on what you are cutting, I suppose. Many of my cuts were much longer than 5 seconds.
@@CopperCreekCuts I'm just a fan of electric anything I think, no fumes or noise is my idea of the perfect working environment
Los Lewis , I was thinking it might be good for climbing. I’ve been having tendon issues from over working. So it helps so much to not have to pull start. If i only used when I needed a hand saw I wouldn’t need it more then 10 minutes worth of cuts for an entire prune. Accompanied with a top handle saw I think it’s pretty rad.
@@sammartinez7201 I want all electric equipment, start strimmers, leaf blowers and lawn mowers all day does my head in and I'm sure will cause issues later on.
The electric chainsaws look good as well with a few extra batteries I'm sure they'd last all day.
If not they charge fast enough to have an inverter and possibly a solar power kit on your van. That's my ultimate goal.
Oh man!!! I had to rub my eyes & make sure I was seeing the timeline correctly.. A 37+min. video from Brad!! Boom Shacka Lacka!! Perfect timing as I'm at work & all is quiet. One question in all seriousness, does Stihl offer a larger battery for the saw?? And... we can ALWAYS count on Brad to shoot it straight & make is very understandable!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!!!
LOL Thank you as always for the comment!
You'd be better off buying a dewalt or milwaukee sawzall, they have blades for wood. At least then you'd be able to use the tool for something other than looking cute lol
Those little hackzalls from Milwaukee look like they work pretty well.
The irony, wearing a florescent echo while testing out sthil 😁😂
Haha, work with what you've got!
@@CopperCreekCuts 😂😂😂
That would actually be perfect for the yearly mountainbike trail clearing. Was thinking of buying a 200€ chainsaw backpack but I guess I will just by this for 150€ and make a holster for it. 😂👌
man those seem pretty handy
Depends on the work, but I do like how compact it is!
@@CopperCreekCuts How long does the battery last
That thing looks basically like the Milwaukee m12 hacksaw. Not to surprising the battery didn’t last to long especially with it being a chainsaw.
Ive got no use for it BUT it is a pretty cool looking tool
I was hoping for at least 20 minutes run time. Single digits was pretty lame :D
If you don't keep the saw running while you're not cutting the battery lasts much longer. Great for an hour or so of work.
I would like you to compare this GTA26 against a Milwaukee Hatchet
Then tell Milwaukee to send me one! :D
i will wait to get one of these-i bet milwakee with come out with a better one
I think those Hackzallz they have already work pretty well! Reciprocating blade, not chain saw bar, but probably works just as well.
Let's not cut the outer branches first to get them out of the way...let's go right in the center to make it hard on ourselves 😂😂😂
I am guessing you aren't familiar with overgrown fruit/flowering trees: The goal is to clean out the inside to open them up to light and air. The ones on the outside are not getting removed.
Here is a good one for all who read the comments on this channel. Illinois proposed state law SB 3313 would make it illegal to sell at retail, or use, a 2 or 4 stroke engine powered leaf blower after 2022! $500 fine if caught.
Holy moly! When does it go to vote?
@@CopperCreekCuts This will be an amendment to the State of Illinois clean air act. I don't think it has a chance, there is too much at stake for the state to loose money.
Marathon Watching 4/15/22 Review this mama jamma ! Oh yeah! Sounds like this went bad. Oh boy.
Might be nice to have in the tool box for " just in case " situations. Probably great for Grandma ! 😀
I think you hit the nail on the head. This tool is going to be GREAT for maybe 5 or 6 random things that could happen. Looks cute though!
You are very smart. How long charge battery ? Please answer. Thanks
I think around 30 minutes!
Copper Creek Cuts Lawn Care Ок
Everyone loved it in your first video, now everyone hates it.
Hate to say it...but, I told you so.
I don't think I ever said you were wrong or disagreed with anyone :)
How much is a spare battery. Did it get everything pruned off an average tree?
No clue, I heard someone comment $30 but I don't know for sure. I show all the work I did in the video. Thanks for watching!
a proper test would be you calculating the time per cut and extrapolate it out over that time
I think what I did (recording the time the battery actually spent working) is most appropriate. You could spend the 9 minutes of run time in 9 minutes or a few hours depending on how you work, but knowing you only get 9 minutes of cutting is the most helpful metric to know.
i bought this knowing the battery sucked and guess what, the battery sucks! I emailed stihl a week ago and haven't heard a peep, thinking about selling this POS on craigslist and buying a milwaukee. my battery lasts about 10 cuts, the charger lights green when it's charging, and goes out when it's charged, ass backwards compared to any other charger out there, it's made in china and makes a loud buzzing sound, almost like an ice machine that's jammed, something's not right here. I think i'll make my own video. i had high hopes for this but man what a waste of time/money. all registered owners should receive a free battery at least OR an ugpraded battery for the inconvenience.
I would strongly recommend making a video, posting that and sending a link to their Facebook account t could give them some great feedback!
Looks like you really have to plan your cuts out to make sure that blade guard can fit in between the branches. I see where you actually had to hold it back a few times to make it get to a branch. Sort of defeats the whole idea of a blade guard. I would have expected Stihl to have put a much more powerful battery in this tool, but the first rendition is always the "test model" for consumers even though Stihl should have done these real world tests first.
Yes, it is a pain when making cuts next to other stuff. Does better when you are just hacking everything, like when cutting stuff smaller to get in the truck.
This machine is great for smaller jobs, like that tree that needs a trim. It's not suitable for a full day of spring cleaning around the garden without spare batteries to last that long.
Can you buy extra batteries? One battery is a deal breaker for me
Probably depends on your dealer!
@@CopperCreekCuts True. There is one near me but doubt it. You know. Felt different in a only Stihl retail shop. But I have been eyeing the 10" Makita 18v chainsaw. I have the batteries... So why not. You know. THX!! =)
I see you get an awful lot done in 10 minutes. I just got mine and the battery charged in about an hour so for use at home I think it is perfect.
Depends on the job, but 10 minutes isn't great when they advertise 25. I still love the tool, though!
@@CopperCreekCuts
When I saw the size of the battery in the shop, I knew it would not last as long as my Makita drill so I asked the guy in the shop but he did not know but assured me you could get extra batteries. Then I read up on it and saw the advertised 25 minutes and figured maybe 15 knowing what we do about electric vehicles. All in all, I am happy with it.
Ewet if the battery is pretty dissapointing, ih works just fite for the purpose I wanted it for, to get high up in trees and prune without having to navigate an ulwieldly blade
Very glad to hear! I am confident this is a great tool for the right set of work!
Lol thanks for posting looked at it at dealer this week and wondered if any good. Definitely not buying
I am glad it helped! Full review this Saturday.
I found that with mine over time the battery will last and if it gets too hot it needs time to cool off and then will have more battery
28:03 Not a thermal issue.
Copper Creek Cuts Lawn Care, thank you
Should of been a 22V battery at least, they are still small enough, and would last more than 2x longer. At this price point, I think it’s not an option at least for me.
Thanks for the feedback!
Looks more like a packing tape dispenser with a chain on it. Doesn't seem worth the time or money.
Hahaha, too funny!
I guess it depends on how much pruning you're doing. I use Bolivian sunflowers as green mulch and it really makes that job much easier.
Brad is a spilt shaft have bless power?
Do you mean does it have less power? It shouldn't, no. The power is determined by the engine.
It’s a Pruning tool not a Giant Redwood Destroyer!!
Perfect tool around the house. Unless you trying to cut skoya trees, for most of us, normal city/suburbs living people, it’s 99.999% of what we will ever need. PERFECT!
Thanks for the feedback!
Hi 👋 I'm following you from ukraine 😊, too, I have a splendid sthil gta 26 chainsaw, I have a slow chain, I would like to tension the chain, how can I do it? can you help me please? thanks Antonio
Hello! You tension the chain by pulling the bar tight then tightening the nut. Your user manual should tell you how.
Copper Creek Cuts Lawn Care don't you have a video? I did not understand what you said, there is nothing in the manual. thanks, let me know please hello Antonio
I love stihl, but... meh, it seems like a sawzall or just some hand pruners would be a better option...
Very well could be depending on your application. Thanks for watching!
So many issues with this video. Your timer keeps going non stop. But your video cuts several different times. FAIL HUGE FAIL. Also your cutting palm frowns, which are fiberous and take FAR more energy from the battery than a stock piece of hard or softwood. This video is MISINFORMATION if anything. Not accurate, at all.
Thanks for the concerns! I will address each point:
- I filmed ~30 minutes of work, but only ~8 minutes of that was cutting. So I cut out all the times I wasn't holding the trigger. That is why there are all the cuts. If you aren't a fan of cuts you can see the no load test which is a full 18 minutes with no cuts. So not a fail at all.
- I don't think that is an issue at all, but again, if you watched the whole video you would see a no load test cutting nothing. That only lasted 18 minutes. This video doesn't meet the definition of misinformation at all. It is carefully compiled and 100% true to my experiences. I encourage you to watch the entire video again instead of jumping around.
Please reply with a new comment as I don't get notified of replies.
Definitely looks like a waste of money.. Great testing..
I hope it helped make a decision!
That battery almost looks like Milwaukee’s m12. You could see if it will fit and work.
The molding is different.
Lithium batteries need to be cycled a few times befor the perform at thire best
I doubt that is the reason they perform so poorly, but that is just my opinion and not worth much.
I heard that hsa 26 lasts around 15-25min can anyone confirm this?
Try looking up videos on that specific tool if you haven't already.
I was going to buy it but now i am not sure:/
Thanks for watching! It is a fun tool, just doesn't last very long.
Well, the AS 2 battery is a 2.1Ah battery. Why in this day and age any company makes a battery for a power tool under 4Ah is beyond me. By my calculations, it should give you 9.6min of average run time based on the raw numbers (which lines up with your real world tests), and definitely not the up to 25min run time marketed by Stihl. Stats: 2.1Ah, 10.8V, 28Wh (stored energy). Wh should be 22.68Wh based on 2.1Ah and 10.8V. mash it all together with special sauce and it spits out .16hrs = 9.6min run time. less load longer run time, more load less run time, which is what you also saw.
Very interesting feedback, thanks for watching!
Comprei uma e não gostei a bateria dura muito pouco demora para carregar se tá quente não carrega e também não trabalha se a temperatura estiver alta
this is why I use ego products because they have the best batteries, its not that their tools are all that amazing but their battery platform destroys everything.
I don't think EGO has a comparable tool or any 10.8V batteries, so it might not be an apples to apples comparison. Thanks for watching!
I have an echo top handle tree saw....works great on the ground for trimming like that. and faster. ill pass on that
They make some cute tiny ones!
@@CopperCreekCuts it rips. I use it far more than i should on some stuff. but one handing a saw and using the free hand to toss debris away from you is nice.
I bought this for my wife so she can cut some shit while i do the heavy work with my GAS POWERED chainsaw. Its not bad and quite handy but its not gonna deforest any acreage anytime soon. You'd be more handy with a hand saw. I'm sure they will come out with an extended life battery soon.
Larger battery would be great!
In otherwords save your money.
I strongly agree with you 👍
I mean, I am sure SOME people out there are OK with it...but I am guessing that is probably 5% of all prospective buyers :D
@@CopperCreekCuts I guess it would be useful to someone with limited hand capabilities or arthritis.
bir aku ve dc inverter ile kablolu daha kullanişli olur sarj omru cak kisa
Clearly this saw is for domestic use only , probably an older person who has isn’t in a rush and who would likely purchase 3 batteries .
You are right. It is not listed for commercial use.
If you give me $20 I'll take that childs toy off your hands! LOL
Haha, you are very kind to offer! :)
I cant decide..buy this cute little useless saw for $180 Canadian
Or a new gas powered stilh 170 chainsaw for $199..
Oh wait I just made up my mind
LOL Glad it was an easy choice!
If it could be hooked up to a backback battery like some electric secateurs it might be a decent pruning tool but as is i just looks like a gimmick.
Now THAT would be sweet!
This thing is just useless, also the protection of the bar is just in the way all the time...
Depends on the work, I am sure, but cutting in between the crepe myrtles it got in the way a lot!
not made for bucking trees,
That much is clear! Thanks for watching!
I'd just get a EGO saw and go all day long..
There is no EGO saw that is comparable to this one.
@@CopperCreekCuts yes, but the pole saw attachment is roughly the same price if you already have the multi tool head. It will most definitely do everything you just did and do it more effectively.
It is too prun not to cut down that size of tree. I think you are falsely waiting to make sure it won't work it's for prunning, not what you are doing. You are wrong
Err.....tree saw!
Haha, thanks for watching!
I use a sthil 2 stroke with a small bar (8 inch) and the same chainsaw with a 2.5 foot bar
Very nice! That is probably a better fit for you than this.
Load that thing back in the box and get your cash back.
Haha, no way, I have to make videos on it for you guys!
Hi
How are you
Hi, great, thank you!
tree lopper are cheaper
Can't argue that, but then again scissors are cheaper than a lawn mower, too! :)
Your not the best operator and you used no oil. These saws run full blast for 26-30 minutes with a decent operator.
You can cut faster with a folding hand saw. That thing is pointless.
Ehh, I doubt that, but even if you could you have to factor in fatigue. Not saying this tool is amazing, but if the choice is cutting with a manual saw for ten minutes or this for ten minutes, I am picking this!
@@CopperCreekCuts I should have said A good hand saw. Those things are sharp and good ones that are taken care of stay sharp a long time. It'll cut faster and a little exercise is good for ya lol. I understand your point, doing it all day would ware a guy out. But if it's for one small branch here and there or a small tree like in your video i'll take a hand saw any day and every day.
Haha, yeah I am basing it off my rusty $5 fiskars saw! :)
@@CopperCreekCuts Fiskars makes good stuff, if it's not rusty lol. If you want the real deal look up Silky Saws, made in Japan. Wide range of choices and well worth the money. Store it inside the truck and out of the weather though :)
