It's what they do
Using ultra modern materials for medieval weapons is something I never thought I’d see, yet I want to see more of it.
Just think, we're so close to actual monoblades, 1 atom thick cutting edge that doesn't dull when striking something with it.
Really interesting isn't it, reminds me of the talks on armour from Adam Savage's channel where they talk about the use of mediaeval armour in designing protective gear during the world wars.
it will break @@Hirome_Satou
I really want to see somebody design a full suit of plate armor using modern materials. Such as Kevlar as chain mail and maybe carbon fiber plates? Does Kevlar have the same properties as chain mail?
kevlar is more like gambeson or a heavy fiber/cloth armor, the thing is, 1600 armor is already almost unbeteable within medieval times, no need to add modern materials to it@@benjamingreve9981
Seeing Shad in street clothes is uncanny. Makes him actually look like a historian
well to be fair, he is, just a rather more... practical? historian rather then theoretical
i know, right? was just saying that.
We got used to seeing him in his various medieval clothes, and now seeing him in normal clothes feels odd 💀
An Auzziana Shad? (Indiana Jones)? 😊
I feel some Adam savage vibes in him in street closes
Shad, reach out to your local timber mills to see if they have any scrap band saws you can have. Saw steel is designed to be sharpened, hold an edge, and handle a beating. They're also extremely long (easily 15-20m depending on the saw)
Ouh thats gonna be interesting. Looking forward to see Shad with a 3 Meter sword smashing boromir
doin WHAT? 😂
@@kingmasterlord Smashing (attacking) Boromir (the dummy)
Would be a great Boromir retirement video if it lines up for such a thing lol
Lets Just Hope boromir's armor manages to hold It together til then
Cant wait to see Shad penetrate Boromir wuth his sword
I'm waiting for shad to start revolutionizing modern medieval weaponry and start mass producing carbon fiber swords so I can get one myself.
@Shad & @James. I feel the need to voice this for you and everyone.
The oldest "known" swords were made of "arsenic copper alloy" over 5000 years ago. Around that era, and time metallurgy started to be implemented in far more use then weapons and armor. From constructing buildings, ships and weapons, to everyday use like utensils, travel and jewelry, the use of metal improved AFTER the sword.
The building of the earlier swords taught us how to use metal in ways we never imagined. So now seeing you use carbon fiber to build a giant sword is inspiring. The engineering and chemistry needed in the creation of a sword is very complex and so the knowledge that will be gained from this... goosebumps. I have goosebumps.
There's an older pure copper sword (a pretty long chopper, thick because of the weakness of elemental copper), and there is one archaeological find of a flint sword with wooden core (like a very old macuahuitl).
@@alexandruianu8432 Do they name them or give an estimate of age? I know carbon dating is flawed but it's the best we have right now.
@@mansfieldtime The copper one is the Klady sword in southern Russia, 3300 BC, about 100 years earlier than the arsenic bronze sword from Asia Minor. As for the flint sword, I can't find the pdf, but I think it's from around the same time, and from a burial site in Galați county, Romania. The graves also had flint knives and early copper baubles.
@@alexandruianu8432 That is awesome. Thanks. I didn't know about this and I enjoy history so with the names I'll be able to find it. And the Flint sword, I ONLY knew of the Aztec but it makes sense that other cultures would find similar uses.
@@mansfieldtime I think the Hawaiians also did the same, but using shark teeth instead of stone or glass.
It is always good to see makers finding use for left over materials from other projects, especially if it cuts down on building costs. Here's hoping the project moves quickly and effectively.
I am disturbed by your modern casual attire, but you boys are killing it as all ways! Awsome video!
They even matched~
Honestly, this project is turning more interesting with each episode, wondering how the final product will look like
1200 degrees with no issue? Could be a candidate for another flame sword, one that doesn't have its tempering ruined by heat.
The resin is the problem with that.
And the steel inlays that form the actual cutting edges of the sword
That is exactly what I was thinking, but I guess it would melt the resin. 😢
@@nickchristian1590 The steel is just for support. the edges will be carbon fiber that's why Tyranth was so concerned
@@swagmiredoesall must have missed all that. I was half watching and was going off of their proof of concept knife
0:55 Fun fact about Kevlar, the woman who invented it did so on accident. When she looked at what she'd made and tested it she thought she'd done the tests wrong because she couldn't believe she'd made something so amazing, especially when she wasn't trying to! She redid all the testing several times before she started telling people about it.
I love accidental discoveries.
And it was not even used in armor and combat first, it was (and I think still is) used in max performance racing slicks to hold the tire together at the high temperatures and stresses of racing.
God, I love engineering. I’m a prototype engineer and fusion360 is my cad software of choice. This blade checks every one of my boxes of interests!
we get it, you like floppy stuff
@@marcogenovesi8570 Like the disks? You are talking about disks right?
😂😂😂@@marcogenovesi8570
i like SolidWorks more but i very much agree with you, i want to model this sword lol
I used to use solidworks. And I will admit for stress analysis and modeling, like it better than fusion, but for programming for milling and turning? Fusion 100%. Fusion is leagues ahead of mastercam. @@Fireninja2343
This is like fantasy in real life. So excited for the finished project.
The Titan sword project reminds me of the fierce deity sword from TLOZ
@@mobgabriel1767i must buy this then
The more tamed-yet-still-very-excited Shad was very pleasent to see again
Love how Shad is like a baby in a candystore while Tyranth and James are like "Shush now, grownups are talking".
Im nerding out like craxy on this one, this is so cool. This episode was awesome and i learned so much.
shad is cosplaying as a modern human with those clothes
A friend and I, he was an AP at the Univ of TN, made a CF sword several years ago, a 48" longsword, and it was amazingly light, sharp, and it cut like a dream... right up until it splintered, cracked, and "went floppy". Materials are more mature now though, so hopefully you get more durable results.
That means there’s already a proof of concept for this project. Super excited see how this plays out.
Carbon fiber and kevlar weave chainmail, now there’s something that would also be really cool… and expensive.
In sportive medieval battling (forgot the name), I heard of some guys walking into the arena with aluminium armors. Same resilience, 1/3 of the weight.
Gambeson, maybe?
I'd say scale or plate armor made of either carbon fiber or kevlar, or both.
The point I’m making is that what the guy showed looked like chainmail. The point isn’t to say it’s actually like other armors. What he showed looked like it functioned like chainmail
@@EpicRandomness555 wat
I’ve been WAITING!!!!!!! Ever since the very first video with the crappy carbon fiber knife that chipped cutting plastic!!
I remember the pocketknife
Is James the owner of the *Outer Circle* 40k youtube channel? He has a very distinct voice and I remember him discussing materials around plastics and making model kits
The moment I heard his voice, I thought the same.
Yes that's macca
If you're creating a extra long long sword assuming you want the cross-sectional shape which is an elongated diamond you could use a composite material called g10 down the center of the blade giving you your central ridge and adding significant rigidity to the blade then add your carbon fiber over top of that encapsulating the entire thing. If you had a central ridge running 2/3 the length of the blade that was approximately 1/8 or about 3 mm tall you would gain significant strength without adding a lot of weight
They could always opt for an executioners sword with a square end. That would solve the issue of the little room in the tip.
wouldn't match the idea they had for the fighting, they want to be thrusting, especially to use the length of the sword
Would it be out of the question to just make the entire tip out of steel?
@@Disgruntled_Grunt or like a V arrowhead thing?
In Would personally go for a katana shape and have it tapered off near the tip.
@@MarlonTaylandeurthen you just want a spear tbh.
James is awesome. Dude takes critique and explains the limits of what they can do, possible work arounds, etc. can’t wait to see what he comes up with.
What about putting some of the carbon fiber under tension to make the sword less floppy?
Running a tensioned layer from the tip to the hilt alongside both sides of the blade might create forces that make the whole thing a lot stiffer. (Probably at the cost of risking to have it snap more easily when being hit wrong)
Wait... Carbon fiber under pressure, reminds me of a submarine
@@shinjiikari1021Ah, I get the joke. I do not want to be this guy, but the carbon fiber would be under tension, not compression. Don't come after me or my family.😅
@@elijahspooner3462It would need a core under compression to be able to tension the CF. Think of a guitar string, the string is tensioned by the support of the guitar's neck under compression.
@@ravneiv Not necessarily. You'd only need to have two halves of the blade pulling on one another, or even just tensioned against the steel core. There's a company that makes CF rifle barrels that work that way.
WOULd not even need to be carbon fiber. It could be any material that works well as a string.
I think you are on to something here. It would be a cheap way to create rigidity. Simply attack a strong to the tip, tie it to the hilt and apply equal tension.
The joy on shad's face is amazing
Shad's childlike giddiness in this video is infectious.
Shadiversity and the Titan Sword is like Brandon Herrera and the AK-50. Progress is made, but will it ever be finished?
As cool as it is seeing this in context of making a carbon fiber sword, I really appreciate the deep dives the guy brings in on the topic
Man this guys deserve some recognition answering the question that dont let us sleep! (At least me)
Glad we got an update on the titan sword, such an Interesting concept
FINALLY! You're actually getting advice from someone who understands these materials. My fear was that this inspirational project was going to fail because you didn't have the in-depth knowledge to do it properly. Now that you have an expert on board, your chances of success have increased dramatically.
I'm not convinced that a longsword would gain much benefit from this, it would be lighter and faster but lack cutting power. But for the Titansword, it's the only practical option. I am thrilled to see this project continue, and look forward to the next installment.
For the design, i think you could use a traditional katana forging method to center the spring steel, with some copper age blade geometries to provide rigidity without losing cutting power, and maybe utilize different weaves of carbon fiber (maybe twill and braid)
Big big props and thanks to James, what a king
This project is reaching sci-fi levels and that man is gonna carry us
When this gets done he deserves his name on the giant sword inventors plaque
... That heat resistance is making me want to revisit the fire sword idea.
I am so hyped for the next parts!
Big props for James for his invaluable help with this incredible project.
Very excited for the final project, cool longsword!
What if you had a skeleton inside the carbon fiber, giving you some amount of structure and support from edge to edge? A "tree" of sheet metal or aluminum running up the spine of the blade and connecting the edge bars.
Thank you Shad, very cool
I'm very excited to see the results of this
Saw you posted something. I was excited. Read the thumbnail excitement Rises. Start watching and seeing where you are at, My Excitement has sky rocketed. I'm thrilled to witness the growth and encouraged to see people wanting to add you. I'm not alone in the love of seeing you reach your goals and make new projects.
So what im hearing is, if the crossguard and pommel is of sufficient enough weight compared to the blade, it will be a war sword that can function much like a rapier.
That is a terrifying idea
Can't wait to see the next version of the prototype and James was such a pal for working with you guys on this.
I smile every time I watch any of these videos. Shadiversty is the happy mix of history, playing, and teaching. Thanks
I’m so happy for you guys, this is just beautiful. I hope this arrangement/ collaboration continues.
Shad is so excited in this vid and he should be. This is awesome and I hope Ty gets to play with some new toys
This is probably the most interesting project on this channel so far, each episode gets closer to greatness.
Can't wait for the new one! Stay strong!
I'm glad your finally continuing on this project
I've been waiting for this so long im glad yall succeeded
As a designer, it is incredibly refreshing to see a craftsman refuse to take over a project from the designer. I have never worked with such craftsmen, and I've been designing for over 15 years.
Coz it looks excellent on camera and will improve business greatly from showing a good buisnessman front in such a large channel. If anyone other than Shad tried such a project, he most likely would have assumed they are a dumb nerd and proceed to "optimise" the project.
FINALLY! i was waiting for this one!
I love how happy Shad is about all of this and how far this project's come.
This guy seems like a great teacher... Wish my old community college had more people like him when I was there.
So the titan sword project is still on going? That’s very exciting to hear! I was worried it may have been quietly cancelled
Since Australia is a Common Wealth country, I think you have to go with Enfield rifle nomenclature and call this next version Mk. I* (and the shorter longsword is probably a Mk. I**). You likely don't get to use Mk. II until you get to the actual Titan Sword.
I second this.
I like James. He is the kind of down-to-earth guy you needed on this project.
oh hell yeah, I've been waiting for the update on this!
Love this project.
Woooo! I'm so hyped!
You guys mentioned Cloud and referenced final fantasy a few times, expressed concerns with a narrow tip, and wanted to make the blade wider. This makes me think of one of the more iconic blade profiles of Cloud's swords, "Hard Edge." Might be an interesting idea to keep in the back pocket.
Make a Sephiroth carbon Fiber katana lmao
@@mobgabriel1767 I think they actually have a video where they test out an Odachi that's comparable to the Masamune. But it's not made of carbon fiber lol, that would just be a whip.
YES!!! I’ve waited for this video and am zo glad to see the series continue!!!
Knew it when you posted that workshop photo, carbon molecular structure on the board and visible carbon fiber sheets. The wait hyped me up too
I feel like a really lightweight wooden core would offer some benefits. You could carve a sword out of a really low density wood, then embed the blade in the edge and layer the composite around the wood in a pattern where the directionality of its strength perfectly met the stresses imparted to the sword.
A longarbon? OR a Longfibre?

Day unknown of asking for a video on the misconceptions of medieval weddings and how they can be incorporated into the plot of a novel or book, (other than just an arranged marriage trope because that can be tiering there had got to be other types of marriages at that time and other than something the hero has to save the love interest from aka Robin Hood saving Marian form being forced to marry the Sheriff of Nottingham clones).
