Hey Shad, I will repeat my comment from the previous video:
as someone working on giant composite pieces for rockets, i would suggest different composites and assembly methods. I think I would go for a Carbon/aluminium sandwich panel, 10-20mm thick (Carbon skins and aluminium honeycomb core). The edges I would actually have them made in sort of U shape that wraps the carbon panel instead of being embedded in the carbon layup. With the current design, if you have too much torsion forces, it might delaminate with a big sword. then that U shape edge would be glued and riveted (with flush rivets) to the panel. That'd be very strong and very rigid while remaining light. Trust me, we make 20m long pieces of composites for rocket fairings and delamination is a real issue the bigger the carbon part becomes.
EDIT: I realize that aluminium honeycomb core is really hard to come by and use for homemade composite but it can be replaced with specific foams that do the same job and are easier to deal with. If you are interested in knowing more about composite design Shad, don't hesitate to send me a PM.
EDIT 2: another solution to have some sort of honeycomb core would be to 3D print it, you can have the shape you want (tapered for example) and print it in many section that you can glue to each other.

The channel "pretty hate machining" has been making one for months and it will weigh over 300lbs!
It was too big to be called a sword. Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Indeed, it was a heap of raw carbon fiber.
One thing they need to do is give the edge more metal, a millimeter of edge doesn’t sound good for longevity
Admittedly, the Dragonslayer was specifically a HEAVY sword. It barely even carried an edge. The weight is what made it so dangerous, not just the fact that it was 2 or 3 meters long.
That disappointment in Tyranth's face when the blade didn't fail. Real life version of "task failed successfully".
They make spaceships out of this stuff (and maybe a space elevator cable someday).
It had better hold up to being used as a knife to hit a piece of lumber!
@@fredashayvery, very different applications. Carbon fiber used on space vessels needs to be able to tolerate the heat and pressure of going through the atmosphere, not direct clashing with steel and other metal. Those are two very different forces. It’s not made to be indestructible, it’s just a strong _enough_ material for their application that is extremely light. The weight is the main factor for use in spaceships, not because it’s the ‘strongest’ material. Spaceships don’t need to be super shielded, only parts that will be exposed when exiting/entering the atmosphere need any sort of serious protection, and those are made of other metal composites. The Lunar landers were made of essentially aluminum foil because all that it needed to do was seal off the cabin from the outside, not tolerate any forces from air/debris.

I would add rebar. Put wire mesh in the middle to keep cracks from processing.
I think it was teaching tech channel that has a way to make graphene, that can be added to the resin to significantly increase strength as well.

I have a feeling this will get lost in the comments, but I work in prosthetics and orthotics and we often work with carbon fiber laminations.1 of the ways that we increase durability and add flexibility as well as reducing cost within the lamination is adding layers of fiber glass Or nylon or nyglass or perlon layers between layers of carbon fiber. The type of resin you use also has a large effect on how the product behaves. I would recommend looking into prosthetic lamination materials for further development of this project and the research surrounding those laminations.

Fiberglass is a lot more dangerous to work with though, the shards when inhaled could cause long term damage. Might need a fumigator to ensure minimal risk but then it's too expensive and not exactly homemakeable

Shad definitely has a hard-on for carbon fiber. But there is a reason why it's not used in this manner. Same reason we don't use aluminum or carbon fiber in bullets. In certain applications, like bullets, the mass is more important than the speed to transfer the energy you want to accomplish the purpose you want.
@@maybehuman4 absolutely not true. This is why lighter faster bullets are better. The equation is kinetic energy = 1/2 (mass * velocity^2) so energy increases much more rapidly by varying velocity than mass
@@Grunttamer This is completely false. Otherwise all bullets would be made of aluminum by now instead of LEAD. Aluminum is lighter, stronger, and faster. But we use LEAD for a reason. Care to guess why?

That blade is friggin terrifying actually but it’d be dope to see something similar in a gladius-machete type of hybrid blade that could be used for hiking and camping. Super impressive build quality guys

One thing to consider, is that regardless of its use as a combat blade? This type of blade would be great for brush clearing.

Tyranth is the guy who was really expecting the blade to crack when hacking at the wood.

Nate makes a cut so clean it reseals the bottle and the water stays inside.
It's also interesting to note how Shad and Tyranth reflexively close their eyes when they hit the water body. Especially Tyranth, his eyes are practically closed during the entire follow-through. Nate on the other hand has nothing more than a quick blink.

I make things with carbon fibre all the time and it might be worth looking into the forged fibre method with chopped tow. Due to the fibres being in a more random orientation i find it to be considerably stiffer than the woven fabric meaning you can make thinner and lighter parts, although the manufacturing process would be more difficult.
Nate definitely had the best edge alignment on the water bottle, with how insanely clean he cut. Masterful design too Tyranth.
I like the 'distinguished sword saint' look Shad is working. Longer hair works! And the tests and banter just makes me smile!

@@fa-ajn9881 If I'm not mistaken they are talking about the RUclips algorithm. It has been an issue for this main channel because of the live streams he is doing. They now unlist the archive version of them and link to those elsewhere because having the live streams listed on the same channel were preventing the regular videos from being recommended. Meaning all the views were coming from subscribers seeking out the content themselves. Shad can see in analytics. View count is down for the simple reason YT keeps changing what it wants. First it 10 minutes for ads, then it was livestreams, and now its shorts. But that's just how the site works. It's counterintuitive and inconsistent. Sometimes you work harder and YT screws you for it.
@@wolokowoh0 He should make a separate channel for the livestreams which is what most multi-form content creators are doing now.
@@Saskaruto16 Yeah it's still a dumb issue though. Especially since Shad already has multiple channels and the livestreams on Knights Watch don't affect Knights Watch recommendations but do on Shadiversity despite the fact Knights Watch also does long form content in addition to livestreams. The subject matter is different, but its the same type of video. The topics of the livestreams on Shadiversity fit the Shadiversity channel which is why he is doing them here. So soon Shad is going have to five or six channels just for the algorithm is screwed up. His solution to unlist them and provide a link elsewhere is easier to manage on his end.
@@wolokowoh0 Yeah RUclips algorithm and systems are honestly just trash. Everyone having to work around them so much is terrible especially when it was so much more effective and accurate to what we as viewers wanted to see years ago.

I’m really enjoying this. It’s reminding me of Brandon Herrera and his series where he’s building the AK-50. Both series give a lot of insight into the R&D process, as well as break down the actual science behind mechanical design and why things are built the way they’re built. All while being easy to digest and extremely entertaining. It kinda makes me want to see the two channels collaborate.

We'll be making a longsword first, to test a midrange size and it's rigidity and another blade attachment method.

Really cool video guys! As someone who works with composites on a daily basis, I did have a few thoughts.
Primarily, if you want this to behave more "sword-like", another option to explore would be fiberglass. Fiberglass is almost as strong in terms of fracture stress, and has the added advantage of being more flexible/has more strain to failure. The downsides would be you loose a bit of strength-to-weight and some stiffness, however there's some ways to mitigate that along with some manufacturing to fix that. for example, you could build up a fiberglass core, with the blade embedded inside it, and then add carbon fiber over the outside surfaces, essentially making a type of sandwich composite to increase flexural strength/stiffness (this is how I make rocket fins). Other options would include any kind of core material used for composites, a honeycomb core would help a lot and have minimal mass.
Coming to the manufacturing, I highly, highly suggest that you try a vacuum bagging process. You wouldn't have to change anything about the mold setup, and would have the benefit of reducing thickness per layer, as well as removing excess resin from the laminate decreasing part density even more.
A note about the blade attachment. I think the way you did it this time was pretty darn good, I would just mirror it on the other side. So when doing the layup, lay some carbon fiber/reinforcement down first, build up some thickness behind the blade, then add the blade blank treated with mold release, and add more layers on top.
Overall, a really good prototype! Definitely room for improvement, but you guys are on the right track!

As a long time hobby bladesmith im really just fascinated by this build series, really cool stuff. I thought that maybe a steelblade tip with a crosssection formed like a arrow-tip would be great for re-sharpening as well as to dampen the strain that is applied to the carbon to steel connection. But surely, this is a cool project, keep it up. You guys made me instantly think and draw some prototypes regarding, blade-profiles and meanings of connection from steel to carbon. Got me hooked.
