The funky thing about this series is: anybody else notice what her surname means in her old homeland: she's far from "low-born", in fact, her family line is *quite* the opposite: her people's history would make her, by family line, technically a type of disinherited royalty!
I *will* say in terms of his career: her Pa was right to keep his relationships *quiet*- as well as his own surname; only letting it out when/if absolutely necessary... also that would help with his family-line and their situation. Makes sense tactically, and in *his* career, and the one he taught her: presence of mind is total for survival. It is not so much killing, it is gathering intel; a lot like Nathan Hale would say: your best assets are your eyes and ears; you do NOT want to kill... not even your enemies: they can be useful intel sources: and you *never ever* kill a source unless absolutely vital: a spy is no assasssin, but he's far more dangerous than one- her skills in defending herself is a vital tidbit of training, yes, but it'd do her no good in her role as something of a naval detective!
