  • SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket will launch the Dragon spacecraft to low Earth orbit to deliver critical cargo to the International Space Station (ISS) for NASA. SpaceX is targeting an afternoon launch of its eighth Commercial Resupply Services mission (CRS-8) from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. The instantaneous launch window opens on April 8th at 8:43pm UTC, and a backup launch window opens at 8:20pm UTC on April 9th. Dragon will be deployed about 10 minutes after liftoff and attach to the ISS about two days after launch. Following stage separation, the first stage of the Falcon 9 will attempt an experimental landing on the “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship in the Atlantic Ocean.

      +The Fearmoths Well, it's like if you had to deliver a cargo on truck somewhere you had to throw away the truck. With auto landing rockets, you can get the first stage back and save a shitload of cash, making space exploration more accessible

    • @TheFearmoths
      @TheFearmoths 8 лет назад

      SpaniardChris It's impressive but I don't really see how space exploration is helping us here on earth.

    • @Muskar2
      @Muskar2 8 лет назад +15

      +The Fearmoths A milestone towards a potential 100-fold decrease in price of spaceflight. So around $600,000 per flight, instead of $60,000,000. Not only does that mean space agencies can launch a lot more rockets with the same budget, but it also means that space flight becomes possible for many more companies. And a middle class person could even save up for a few decades to buy a ticket to move to Mars (once a civilization is established there anyway). That's the ballpark this achievement is in.

    • @kekistaniattackhelicopter2242
      @kekistaniattackhelicopter2242 8 лет назад +4

      +The Fearmoths Cheaper space travel will speed up space exploration technology. There are already companies developing technologies for extraterrestrial mining operations. Asteroid belts are full of platinum group and other heavy materials. All we have to do is get there and bring them back. There are rocks floating in space containing more platinum than Earths crust. The only obstacle is space travel. Easy access to those rare materials will speed up technology and make it much cheaper for everyone.

      @@realblast1 You are thinking a little too conspiratorially. At the 19:50 point you refer to, you can clearly see the SpaceX logo and just above it a clear line underneath which the rocket is shinier than above the line. That appears to me where the dark area begins on the rocket at the 36:50 point. I am guessing, but I think there must have been some thin covering over the landing legs, perhaps for aerodynamic reasons, which was discarded once the legs deployed. Add to this the fact that SpaceX has repeated the maneuver many times since and it makes your assertion unbelievable.

      +Jean Alphonse They landed a rocket flying into orbit at 10.000 km/h. They made it turn around, fly all the way back, hit the atmosphere just right where the rocket doesnt't burn up, manage to bullseye hit a tiny 20x20m barge in the middle of the ocean while winds were going 50+ mph, effectively cutting the way for a nearly 100 fold marginal cost reduction in manufacturing of rockets or in other words: Paved the way for the commercial viability of space.

      +Jean Alphonse Once we get something into space, we separate the parts not being used anymore. The problem is, it just becomes junk floating in orbit. It'd be a lot better if we could just land it to reuse it since it saves a ton of money. It's also historic because it's the first step in creating spacecraft that can take off, go into space and then land back on earth without separation.
