Excellent advise. Transmissions need to be serviced at least every 60k miles. As long as the fluid and filter are changed consistently, your transmission will last for hundreds of miles.
I always change mine every 60,000 miles. Just did 6 of 9 quart flush on my 1999 Acura RL with 185000 miles on it. Shifts like a champ! If you believe in life time fluid then you probably believe that oil changes are optional too
I’m torn on this. Last time I changed transmission fluid the transmission started slipping and failed. Then my previous vehicle had 260k miles on it and the transmission fluid had never been changed and it worked fine. I might do a simple drain and fill but it worries me.
This can happen with very old fluid that is thick as hell. You change it and the transmission fails. But in this case, the transmission was already going to die anyway and not changing the fluid would save it for 1000-2000 miles.
I bought a 2011 Kia Sorento in Nov 2022. It had 136,000 miles. It now (Nov 2024) has 153,000. I don't know know what was done prior to my buying it. I've been thinking pretty much since I bought it that its 4 cylinders (2.4L) are having a tough time when it comes to acceleration and climbing hills. I recently tried 93 octane and I noticed an improvement. All things being equal, would you say I should be having the fluid changed? I expect it's more expensive than changing the oil, but what would be the price range for the job? Thank you.
At 150K miles, I would change fluid and filter in transmission. It's going to cost you about $1000 for this car in an independent repair shop (parts + labor). Alternatively, you may try to inquire in Kia dealership for any service records and see if the fluid was changed at, say, 120K miles.

I hope you meant hundreds of thousands of miles.

You are brilliant. I hope people learn more about this topic.
And use the manufacturers fluid not aftermarket brands 'one size fits all' from the store.
