2:30 - - For those interested--the 'treat' as it's referred to in the middle does not appear at random. When you cause two rocks to drop the veggies appear.
I dig Dig Dug as I am one of the ELITE Dig-Dug players with a high score of 2.4 MILLION - making it to round 172.. My first Dig-Dug experience was at a 7-11 in Provo, Utah summer of 1982 while visiting my grandparents. My question is why is the sound INDENTCAL to the 2600 version?
Because, to allow backwards compatability with 2600 games, the 7800 has the same sound chip as the 2600. Atari decided that if a game needs better sound, the cartridge itself could utilize its own "pokey" chip. This of course made the games more expensive to produce and I don't think any commercial games were released with it. A few homebrew games have them. I think the 5200 used the pokey chip, and some arcade boards.
It was also because the 7800 had initially been planned to be released in 1984, but because of the video game crash, and the subsequent sale of Atari from Warner Bros. to Jack Tramiel (formerly of Commodore Business Machines), the machine's planned release date was changed to 1986.
the treats show up after dropping two rocks, i also found out depending on the level you are on in the dirt it changes your points, if your in the bottom color level you will get significantly more points per kill compared to the very top color of the level
This sounds exactly like the Atari 2600 version. I think they have a similar sound chip. The 5200 had the POKEY sound chip. Otherwise, great version of the Dig Dug. Now we just need it on the Vectrex.
The 7800 had the same sound chip as the 2600 to keep it backward compatible. Some 7800 cartridges were supposed to get a POKEY chip installed in them, but many cartridges didn't get that treatment.
ahh Dig Dug, a timeless classic. i will say that the 7800 version of course is better than the 2600 version... however, my memory brings to mind the best port of this arcade classic belonging to the Commodore 64. thanks for posting Mark, great review!
Funny a later PS1/Arcade/Dreamcast game called "Mr. Driller" more or less revealed Dig Dug's real name (Taizou Hori) and he had a kid (Susumu Hori/Mr. Driller).
Played on the GBA for the first time, I'm not a big fan of this game, but I still played it a lot, it's good but I'm just the kind of guy who can play games like this and appreciate it, but I like games that don't have the main point of them to get a super high score.
I hrew up on the passable 2600 version. When I got a 7800, the visuals were astounding... but the sound was identical? It was a head-scratcher until finding out the 7800's sound system was just the 2600's unless they added an expensive POKEY chip to a cartridge. To think POKEY would originally be integrated into the console yet they didn't... 😔
i don't if the atari had two buttons to pump and kill the enemies but i found a computer version made by nes cafe and its pretty nice plus you have both z and x buttons to kil enemies so its easier
Imagine if Dig Dug never existed, and someone created it for the next gen consoles. 100% sure it would be rated M for mature xD Imagine how gory it would be to explode those enemies, and crushing them with a boulder. Damn!
@bigpoopie69 Blashphemy!!! Did Dug kills his enemies with a bike pump. That's way cooler than... what, jumping on them. (by the way, i'm just joking around, they're both awesome)
Oh God, thank you for telling us this. You are a fucking life saver. I mean, I almost watched this review completely ignorant of his awful and unforgivable mistakes.
yeah these are freaking nice sometimes i just grab a snack and watch classic gameroom pure entertainment especially the ones where dave throws some insane jokes and i almost throw my food all over the place..xD
classic game reviewers! please stop saying "back in the day" you keep reminding me of a time when everything was simpler, games were greater and had a charm that can never be matched today, and when Heavy Metal was pretty kick ass
I dig Dig Dug, I've always dug Dig Dug, but do I dig him because I dug him, or did I not dig him and only now ,truly dig, Dig Dug... Wh-...What did I just say?

I love the really cheery music, since it's such a contrast to the extreme violence going on.
Jaz Plaz Lol yes extreme fantasy world violence with fictional creatures getting ‘pumped’ to death lol
This is the 5th dig dug review i've watched from you today mark.
Glad to see classic games are still being appreciated by a new generation. You have good taste. :)
I love how the Atari 7800 has stretched out graphics and this is my favorite version of Dig Dug.
Really?
Love the early Classic Game Room reviews.
I will always love this game play it went a was a kid many years ago in the arcades and now on my xbox360
I didn't even know Dig Dug existed until after the legendary Game Room review in 1999. This game is awesome.
I remember Dig Dug, that was a great game. Although I never played it on the Atari, there was an NES port also, which is what I grew up on.

ClassicTVMan1981X This is correct.
Wow, this is the first 7800 game I've heard that sounds pretty darn good compared to the original. :D
Never played this. I have an NES rom of this though i am sure. Time to go play this on MAME too. Looks fun.
C64 also a great version
you know what would be good on the 7800 would be Berzerk
It's a harpoon combined with a pump.
There was also Dig Dug II, which I played on the NES.
Best console version in my opinion. Atari 7800 was awesome at bringing the Arcade Action home.
Wicked Review man. I really enjoy your Videos.
@deadlygroove1
I didn't know if the 2600 controller worked for this game because it only has one button
the treats show up after dropping two rocks, i also found out depending on the level you are on in the dirt it changes your points, if your in the bottom color level you will get significantly more points per kill compared to the very top color of the level
I like the music ported but the SFX should have been beefed up.
perhaps some dudes get all depressed remembering themselves in the 80´s playing those nice games, hence the underating
yes, 2600 controllers as well as Sega Genesis and Colecovision controllers. just make sure you only need one button for the 7800 version.

@Pkmaxey Thats' because the 7800 uses the 2600's TIA chip for sound in 7800 games.. Yea, it was a bad move from Atari to do that.
Hey Mark. Did you have your own quaters to play DigDug, or did you do (as we all did) - beg them from your parents?.
I was just playing it in the arcade today :-)
ahh Dig Dug, a timeless classic.

thanks for posting Mark, great review!
Sweet, I hope u get the 7800.
Dig Dug kills enemies with a bike pump... that's freakin' hardcore!
hey you mispelled dig dug in the description, you wrote dig dig:o
i love this song
Awesome video.
Can you play this with a 2600 controller or Genesis controller?
I used to play this all the tie on my gameboy emulator
what's the name of the theme song? ;)
Funny a later PS1/Arcade/Dreamcast game called "Mr. Driller" more or less revealed Dig Dug's real name (Taizou Hori) and he had a kid (Susumu Hori/Mr. Driller).
im so buying this
Keep in mind this will work on the upcoming 2600+... So left the feeling those old 7 800 purchase are gonna het lots of interest very soon!

@deadlygroove1
for both?
Good job
I have this game for my XBOX 360 i need to get it for my NES or 2600
heck so much work and they have 6000 subscribers
i don't if the atari had two buttons to pump and kill the enemies but i found a computer version made by nes cafe and its pretty nice plus you have both z and x buttons to kil enemies so its easier
Yes, but some 7800 games require 2 buttons (2600 controllers only have 1). Most need only one though.
Imagine if Dig Dug never existed, and someone created it for the next gen consoles. 100% sure it would be rated M for mature xD Imagine how gory it would be to explode those enemies, and crushing them with a boulder. Damn!
I always thought did dug gave the health nuts fast food to make them phat
ive been playing this since i was about 5ish
@bigpoopie69 Blashphemy!!! Did Dug kills his enemies with a bike pump. That's way cooler than... what, jumping on them.
(by the way, i'm just joking around, they're both awesome)

I dig Dig Dug, I've always dug Dig Dug, but do I dig him because I dug him, or did I not dig him and only now ,truly dig, Dig Dug... Wh-...What did I just say?
