    In NYS where I live, you can practice sit for you LMSW right after getting your MSW. You can only practice therapy under someone else who will usually be an LCSW. LCSW are licensed by the state to diagnose. However, to get an LCSW, you have to do 2,000 clinical hours with patient contact. That typically takes 3 years because you have to go through supervision.
