I have a question for you and I would be very grateful if you could help me. I have a bachelor's degree in psychology and I am studying for a master's degree in artificial intelligence and I really want to study a PhD in clinical psychology in America. Do you think it is possible for me to get admission with funding and what are the solutions for my chances? I have a good TOEFL score and I have not yet approved my research proposal and i can work in the field of using artificial intelligence in psychology. And in general, do you think neuroscience or clinical psychology is a better choice? Do clinical psychology with phd in us have the right to occupational therapy? And can you earn up to 100,000 dollars a year from these fields?thank you

In terms of admissions it might be helpful to reach out to programs about your application before you apply. Clinical psychologists can do therapy while neuroscientists do not do therapy. Salary ranges can be found on bls.gov and depend on area and specialty

but why would you pursue a doctorate over a masters in counseling? you can do the same with a masters regarding practice? i know you cant research and teach with a masters but is that the only difference ?

Good questions! You're right there's a lot of similarities, it really depends on the person and their end goal. Psychologists are able to do more psychological assessment/diagnostic testing and neuropsychological evaluations than master level clinicians. In some states psychologists can also prescribe medication, which master level clinicians are not able to do. Then of course there's also the doctoral level teaching, training, and research. If prospective students only want to focus on therapy then masters in counseling is a phenomenal option- less school, less student loans, and in private practice many can sometimes make the same amount as a psychologist. So it really depends on what exactly people want for their career. I definitely don't think anyone should get a doctorate just to get it, there's got to be more to look forward to than just obtaining a phd.

Also, being a Psychologist is more than just being a counselor or therapist. I think that is a huge misconception for people wanting to go into the field of Psychology. A Doctorate is what actually makes you a Psychologist, not a Masters. There are different fields of Psychology, which will determine more of what you do as a practicing Psychologist. When you have a PsyD, PhD, or MD (in Psychiatry), SO many more doors open up for you. Therefore, pursuing a clinical psychology graduate degree is not a doctorate in counseling. You are trained to do work far beyond that. However, as a Psychologist, you can always provide therapy. I know some psychologist and physicians (psychiatrists) who do it when they have time. I work for an Academic Health System, so I get to see a lot of psychologists and psychiatrists in action, thankfully. You may be able to do some things with a MA, but not nearly as much as you could at the doctorate level. I am currently preparing for graduate school with NO second thought or doubt!
