    So nice to see a young man who enjoys farming, where I grew up, all the young men ran as fast and far away from the farm as possible, all the farmland now is spruce and the new generation think all their food comes from the supermarket. Cheers, love your videos.

      Thank you! Yeah a lot of farm kids I grew up with took their careers to different places but a few are sticking around. And yeah it is pretty sad how people now days don’t know where their food comes from. Thanks for watching!

    I think I'd put the original calves (3 week olds) into the larger pens. I would also put the youngest/most fragile in the back, most covered part. Just giving them a little less exposure to the elements. I'm just thinking out loud, not judging or critiquing your set up. You're doing a fine job.

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  4 года назад

      Yeah I was going to put the younger one further into the barn but I also wanted to keep all of the heifers by each other as they are getting a little extra attention. I basically just placed them in the order they came out of the truck. The older three will be getting freedom here in a few weeks! Thanks for watching!

    Keep an eye on “psycho-bull”! It might be fun to see if he’d like a playground ball to push around his pen.
    Hopefully, the quiet fellow will feel better soon.

      I was wondering if he had a vision problem. Even looking at him in the video, his head swaying from side to side can be a sign of visual impairment. He's using his nose a lot more too. Like he's smelling & hearing, but necessarily seeing as well.

      And about that....I made a rookie mistake lol. When I pulled that calf off the truck I assumed he was a bull because the farmer said their were two in there and they were huge. Found out today “psycho-bull” is actually “gigantic-psycho-heifer”!

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  4 года назад +1

      It doesn’t get too cold here and they are protected from the wind for the most part. It normally stays around 30-mid 40s here in the winter. As long as they have clean dry bedding they should be good!

    So awesome! I’ve seen all your videos! Love it! I’m 24 Startin to get into cattle with my wife. What kind of vitamins do you give to the cows(full grown and calves) and do calves need any kind of treatment when dropped? Really don’t know much bout cows but gettin into it

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  4 года назад +2

      We give a mineral mix and salt block to all of our cows. Just go to your local feed store and see what they have available, they should be able to direct you. For bottle calves, I do not give them any vitamins or minerals. Everything they need at the moment is found in the milk and grain. After they are weaned they get access to a loose mineral mix as well. Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi. I have enjoyed your videos. I have thought about getting into bottle calves again. I do have some cows and calves but have wanted to do bottle calves again. I know scours are a big problem with the little ones. I have saved some and have lost some over the years. What do you recommend to help both to provent scours and to treatment scours? Especially when raise a good bunch of calves at ones?

    • @FarmandHammer

      We get crescent calf mate. It is kind of local feed mill. But they ship it to most feed stores in southwest mo. There are many brands to chose from just make sure it is at least 14% protein. These run $9 for a 50lb bag

    • @FarmandHammer

      Yes I will eventually show how we clean the stalls, but we won’t clean them till after the calf is weaned. The milk replacer I use runs about $69 per bag. And yes I’ll try to show the holder in a video here soon!

    Hello from a fellow starting beef farmer if you don’t mind me asking what’s your survival been screwed over with a couple dummy calves

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  4 года назад

      I’m assuming by dummy calves you are talking about weak calf syndrome? I have had 1 dummy in about the last 75 which isn’t too terrible. When we used to raise Holsteins it was a little more common but with those it was sometimes hard to tell what they died from. If you get one or two from a farmer...I would maybe suggest trying to find another supplier. I normally see it caused by FPT so if the farmers cows are in good condition when they calve you shouldn’t have to worry about it too much. If you’ve got any other questions, feel free to send them my way. I’ll do my best to answer them.

    I have a question, what would you use if your cattle had ringworm? We got a kitten and she gave every pet in the home ringworm, she was a carrier so no visual spots on her. By the time we realized what was going on... it was too late. Buying the lime sulfur dip for dogs/cats is expensive. I was wondering if you know of some in bulk aka cow/horse size dip? We have 2 cats and 4 dogs. Been to the vet and our vet wont help us unless we do a 200 dollar test on EACH pet and then repeat every few weeks until 2 neg tests come in for each one.... that would seriously be THOUSANDS. The stuff we can buy is like a 2 time use and they have to be dipped 2x a week each for up to a few months. If i had known the kitten had it i would never have gotten her. We love her obviously (we've had her since xmas eve) but now we all have it. Us included. Been bleaching and washing everything all the time. This is nuts and im overwhelmed... any help or ideas???? please??? Ty

    I'm getting into farming and why do you have holsteins when you dont milk?

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  4 года назад +1

      I purchase all of these beef x Holstein calves (from other farms) for beef production only. The heifers will most likely turn into “beef” cows and all of the steers will go to beef markets. I won’t ever raise a group of straight Holsteins most likely, due to how hard it can be to make money. Hope that answered your question!

  • @enriquearias5471
    @enriquearias5471 4 года назад

    I just got a Jersey calf. I’m completely new to this. I was advice to only give it 4 pints a day 2 in the morning 2 in the afternoon. Is this correct? I fear over feeding it. Hope someone can give me advice. Thank You.
    Also to mention I’m bottle feeding it.

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  4 года назад +1

      That may be correct. It all depends on how big the calf is. Most jerseys are pretty small so I would start with 1 quart every 12 hours and gradually increase it to 2 quarts every 12. The calves I get are pretty large so most of them get 2 quarts every 12 hours. Hope that helped a little. Feel free to ask any other questions you have!

    • @enriquearias5471
      @enriquearias5471 4 года назад

      Farm & Hammer awesome! Also to add on to that Milk has to be warm correct ? Does this apply to their drinking water as well or does the temperature of the water not matter as much? You’ve lowkey inspired me hoping I can sooner or later sell calf’s off for profit. Keep up the good work.

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  4 года назад

      Yes, the milk needs to be warm. Shoot for close to 105 F. Most of the time the calves won’t drink plain cold water, but they will drink it warm. I appreciate it! Good luck!

  • @angelus3605
    @angelus3605 4 года назад

    7:31 I'm wondering, if you are breeding then why do you still buy bottle calves? Seems like you can save the cost by just collecting the calves being born and putting them in the pens.

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  4 года назад

      We have beef cows and all of their calves stay on the mothers. These bottle calves I am buying will eventually turn into beef cows and raise their own calf every year. Dairy farmers don’t keep these calves on the cows because they are trying to sell the milk, not beef animals. Whenever these heifers produce their own calves in 2 years I will most likely quit raising bottle calves because they will raise their own calves. Hope that answered your questions! Thanks for watching!
