1991 Toyota Pickup Review // A Truck Packed with Character

  • I'm extremely excited about this review! This is a 1991 Toyota Pickup and it is nothing short of showroom quality. Driving this 91 Toyota Pickup was like taking a step back in time and in a very good way. This 91 Toyota Pickup is unlike anything I've ever driven before and was packed with character. This 91 Toyota Pickup in particular was the 4wd 3.0L V6 with the 5 speed manual transmission. The 91 Toyota Pickup was dubbed the Hilux in Japan and was later named the Tacoma here in the US.

    I was just given my grandmas 91 pickup and it is in immaculate condition, my grandma only used it to move wood around as she was a woodworker, everything’s original, under 70k miles, and it’s really just a super cool truck

      i got a 2000 tacoma handed down from my dad. i know what u mean... they are timeless and last forever... they are tanks.
      they have soul. theres this calm feeling i get while driving. so enjoyable

    • @99dynasty
      @99dynasty 6 лет назад +1

      It’s all preference of course.
      I enjoy blueprinting a 22R type powerplant. You could go high performance Carb or even 22RTE for real performance.
      That low end torque from the swirl induced 2 valve design is real pleasant off-road.
      Of course building engines should be done as a hobby since it costs money.
      Other reasons to not go tacoma is that the quality of components seemed to lessen as the switched production to North America in ‘95.
      Tacoma Still fantastic trucks but the 85 95 has a lot going for it.
      BTW V6 is not the best engine configuration.
      Inline 6 is superior ( bmw always prefered I6 over V6 )
      But on the little trucks inline 4 is great especially if you can squeeze a little more torque with intelligent upgrades.

    such a contrast between engines that came in these 80s and 90s pickups. The 4 cylinder 22RE was legendary and made Toyota's reputation for reliability and then you had the 3.0 V6 which barely any faster and became known as one of the worst engines Toyota ever made.

    Something about a light body very sturdy body on frame that rides very well, drives straight and you can beat the crap out of is amazing...so simple, so practical. Like a streamlined jeep that is as good of f road as it is on without going into all the jeep type modifications that are done (ie oversized tires and lift kits, sway bars and Danas). the engine is also very good, perfect even. It's like the closest thing to a bike, you are the truck when you drive it. You can go anywhere and be ok...

    My god! I bet that truck would sell for between 10k-13k on bring a trailer.com. That is the wanted ( top tier ) Model as far as those trucks go. If I were your friend, I'd put it in a car condom, oil undercoat it and store it in a barn so he can retire a rich man. One that clean is RARE! When we are in our 70's, those will be nonexistent due to how long people drove them and how mother nature ate them AKA Rust. My brother and I each have one. Both regular cab's with the 22re 5 spd. My brother FULLY redid his and after doing a ton of work, he painted it himself. It came out OK but the midnight metallic blue paint looks kind of shabby. Still, he has been offered 7 grand for his. He loves it so much and after taking a full summer to pull the cab/bed, remove all the rust on the frame/patch a few small rot spots on it, sand the entire bed and cab down to make it rust free then paint the entire frame with POR15 rustproof paint/ paint the entire body, instead of letting it go for a great profit, he plans on keeping it and putting a million miles on it's original engine. He's already at 384,000! Before very winter, he puts a thick coat of fluid film on it and after 4 years of doing that, he has a 1/4 inch of grease which covers the entire underside of the truck. It will NEVER rust out! His next and final step is to take it to a professional paint shop, bite the bullet and just pay someone to put a showroom quality coat of paint on it. At that point, it would look exactly like the one in your video! I am gong to send him a link to this vid and try to get him to go for this same color to be honest. He even found a set of the V6 alloy rims like that truck has so it would be a replica besides it being a 4cyl. My Yota is a 94' single cab that is flat black (covering a really beat up body) with a plow setup on it. I only drive it in the winter to plow and it starts on the worst of nights and pushes as much snow as most full size pickups do. I garage it all summer and also undercoat it every year to keep it from letting the cancer take over. Sometime in the next few years, I will take a summer and pull the cab/bed off and do what my brother did with his. I'm going to have to go with the white color and after seeing this video, I'm going to start sourcing the original Toyota graphics. We both agree that these trucks will never get sold. We will both be 70 year old grandpa's around 2050, tooling around the mountains of southern Vermont in our 60 year old Toyota pickups. I cant wait to see how many miles each truck has on it by then! Actually, this has inspired me to make a video of both our trucks! Thanks for the upload man!

    The 3.0 v6 gasket was not an engine issue, it's a gasket issue. The 88-89 had the best head gaskets a long with 1995s. In late 1989 the US banned asbestos material which was found in the good 88-89 gaskets. A quick change up went to weaker gaskets in 90-94s but even then it was usually only the heavier 4Runners with automatics and gearing for the little 225 tires and someone replaced with larger 31" + etc that ever caused an issue. If you have a pickup v6 manual and didn't tow then even with the bad head gaskets you'll likely never have an issue. I much prefer the 3.0 over the 22re! That 115hp will have you sticking your leg out up hills, no thanks.
    Also IFS came in 1986 to them not 1985 and the solid axle is a much better performer off road. You have that backwards. Enjoyed the video though 🍻

    • @GrahamCain
      @GrahamCain  6 лет назад +1

      It's just the "Toyota Pickup" here. I honestly have no idea why Toyota didn't brand it as the Hilux here like it did elsewhere.

    • @CanadianCarguy247
      @CanadianCarguy247 6 лет назад

      I think Toyota probably went with calling it the "Pickup" or "4x4" just so that when they were first starting off people knew what it was. If somebody said a Toyota Hilux to an American they might think of another small car like a camry or Corolla but if you were to say to them a Toyota Pickup they would have to assume it was a pickup truck Haha better for marketing I would think.

    • @morganwilcox1710
      @morganwilcox1710 6 лет назад

      Hilux was a name given to toyota pickups sold in 3rd world countries. They were built tougher than the normal pickups, and they needed very little servicing. Built for those countries without auto shops around.

    • @aaronbays4

      I don't know why they didn't stick with the Hilux name, that's what they were branded as back in the 1970's. They also called the 1980's JDM "Master Ace Surf" van simply the "Toyota Van" in the US.
      Also 1986 is first year for independent front suspension in the US market. Hardcore off road guys swap it out for a solid front axle(easier to do massive lifts/more articulation), but the independent setup does drive/steer/ride nicer on a paved road stock vs stock.

    I owned the 92 with the V6. Pathetic horses, and the engine blew a head gasket right before the end of warranty. I loved the truck, and my major complaint with independent up front? You couldn't jack it up like the 85!!

    This truck would be sweet if it had the 22RE. I wouldn’t even consider the 3.0.

      Really the 3.0 3VZE is a reliable engine other than the head gasket issue. The power was adequate for its time and mine delivers decent gas mileage. Usually 17 around town and 20 on the highway. It's been a good engine and other than the initial replacement under recall, it hasn't blown another head gasket. It's really up to how the owners and how they treat them. Use good parts, don't thrash the Hell out of it, and it will last. Many of my friends have 22re powered Toyota trucks and they haven't all been great. Several have blown head gaskets or had to rebuild them for other reasons. I don't speak for everyone but I wouldn't sweat buying a 3.0 Toyota truck.

    That poor 3.0 could have been something greater without the EGR system. Really chokes the thing up. Doing an EGR delete is worth it.

    New trucks are just so big and bloated including the $$$. I had the opportunity to buy one in 94 but went the car route with a boy racer car in college, still regret not getting a toyota pickup and drive it for the next 25 years...:-[
