I do wish Scott do appear earlier.. but it was nice to see developments on evil Exes too. Some of them were victims of Romana like she dated the Twins at the same time and scoff of Roxanne feelings. Overall it does question about her own current relationship with Scott in the future. How she always leaves when things go south and not face them. In the future, we don’t know why they are separated, but it’s obvious she waited for Scott to return but instead of facing him to solve their issue, she went back in time to help YoungNeil write his screenplay. Future Romana was hoping that her Scott would realize on his own that she loves him, but she wants Scott to figure it out on his own. The series does well with Romana as she realizes she can’t just leave when things go tough and work on herself more to help Scott and their love will grow stronger.

I really enjoyed seeing how Scott had to work to be with Ramona, and now she has to put in the work too.
Their relationship can now be even stronger after seeing and understanding how much they each worked to be with one another.
Relationships are never simple or easy, but it really really helps when you’re both as committed as you can be.

That’s kinda part of my internal conflict with the show. Like imo… that was already done in the books but better, but people who only watched the movie and show wouldn’t know that.
The whole plot of the books was both Scott and Ramona realizing how crappy and flawed they were and growing through it. Scott as the main character of course went through more personal trials as he discovered himself, but Ramona’s flaws were relevant too- she straight up ran away from the relationship at the first sign of trouble like it was mentioned in the show. But in the final volume she finally CHOSE to came back for the first time in her life, and actually willingly fought alongside Scott to get rid of Gideon. And the ending of the series was them realizing that they both needed to put more effort into their relationship, and deciding to work through their problems together, choosing to stay loyal to this relationship no matter the troubles they will go through in the future.
For me the show is a middle ground. For those wanting more nuance and only watched the movie, the show is great at showing the nuance that the characters in the books have. But if you want even more development and character growth from these characters, the comics are still the best source.
Personally, I think the sole thing the show is meant to do is just give more screentime to the characters that weren’t given attention in the comic. The exes + Ramona getting closure, Young Neil, Knives getting that music element to her, Julie, etc. And they did it in a creative and fun way, an alternate timeline! But if you want more from Envy/Stephen/Kim/Scott/Ramona etc it’s still great to read the comic- and my main issue was that the show doesn’t really give the feeling that you need to read the comic, it acts like a concluding sequel to those not aware of the comic.

But in this Anime Ramona wasn't even going steady with Scott when he disappeared. This whole grand search for Scott felt kind of weird there was nothing really attaching Ramona to Scott except one kiss, and nobody else really even gave a shit about Scott after his funeral.

I find it kinda funny, how people were frustrated about Ramona not helping Scott to deal with her past (She wasn't there during fight with Lucas and brothers, and wasn't making any moves vs Todd and Matthew), when dude got whole package of messed up stuff as well, in original series, and now they see it as a problem, that she has to deal with it. I liked the story series tried to say, with Ramona finally, after 17 years, getting proper development. Most of the 2nd plan was just Hilarious. I never thought I would like interactions between Knives and Steven Steels, or that one ep 6 moment with Lucas and Gideon. It's not story about Scott anymore, but rather about the world of Scott Pilgrim. Some might hate it, but not me personally

I feel most people are missing the mark with in their reviews when they talk about Scott missing. Everyone is able to talk things out and become a better person for it. Reinforcing that Scott isn't that great of a guy. But instead of fighting his way through his issues (which he tries at the end of the show) he catches up to speed with everyone else who matures.
While the book/film is about 2 people maturing, the show is about 9 people maturing.

    • @lukeamparo6586

      Ramona had development? How? When?
She has no regrets with her exes past Roxie. And her future self is still a delivery girl.
The only character with development in this season of the show was Knives.
Wallace is just sleeping around till he finds his sugar daddy.
Todd is having a sexual identity crisis.
Lucas is just a loser now.
      The Twins… were there.
Matthew Patel got a W but that’s it.
And Kim and Stephen are just in a band still but with Knives now.
I suppose the surprise was Julie and Gideon being together. But this all felt like multiverse filler with actors who can act but can’t voice act. Ramona, Scott, and Young Neil were so deadpan.
Glad you enjoyed it but what episode did Ramona get development past Roxie? Where was the introspection, self reflection, growth,… something that progresses her character past being a Columbo fan girl asking “smart questions”?

    • @victorsardaneta8727
      @victorsardaneta8727 6 месяцев назад +4

@@revilo1st I mean, the whole point of the comic is that Scott isn't a good person. He fights because he's quite literally ambushed, but each fight brings forth a ton of development. The entire point is that no one has a healthy coping mechanism. You expect me to believe that suddenly 9 troubled people got all their issues solved? It was plain character assassination.

    • @MrKiller392
      @MrKiller392 6 месяцев назад +1

@@lukeamparo6586 Well, remind me wht she was doing at original comics? Being MacGuffin that Scott needs to get, fighting 7 exes in process? The only times she did something was when she fought Roxxy for most of the tom 4 (Just because Scott had at least some morals to not beat girl) and helping him against Gideon. And now, she tries to solute her own mistakes. She actually gets to talk with Lucas and even helps him in escape, when in comics she wasn't there for fight with him. Unlike comics Ramona, she's not running from problems caused by her, she's not betraying Scott once he "died" (Something she already did with Lucas, Roxxy and brothers) but fights to bring him back. If that's not character development, I don't know what is. Sure, Brothers kinda here, and she hasn't got anything to say for Matthew, Gideon and Todd, but the fact she was able to solve her own problems herself, and give exes better ending than in og series (They kinda died there, even if not entirely, what was shown in ep 7) is archivement.

    • @NikonatorX
      @NikonatorX 6 месяцев назад +3

Ramona's character was about running from her past and it catching up with her anyways. It makes sense she wouldn't face her exes, and the people mad about it seem they don't get the story.
Although, I disagree with the take he never had development. In the comics, she left Scott, but then came back and both defeated Gideon. She faced her past, and removed the power Gideon had over her, and ended with her trying to start holding on to things (Scott in this case).
I like the series, but she had almost the same development that she had on the comics, costing most of Scott's development.

I have very mixed feelings about this series. Due in no small part to my expectations being betrayed. Frankly, I was really looking forward to a faithful adaptation of the comic books. The movie had to strip the original story down its most basic premise to fit the runtime, a series would have had the breathing room for all of the events, characters, and character development from the books. Maybe even expand upon them. Turning it into a Ramona centric murder mystery didn't really pay off for me. Mostly because the murder mystery aspect was not well thought out and served more as a vehicle to compel Ramona to interact with her ex's. It didn't help that no one really cared that Scott was dead, not even his close friends and family.

The issues I have with the final product is that the trailer is a literal Bait and Switch, we the established audience, that enjoy the comics, movie and game, expected a faithful adaption that would serve to have new audiences to be introduced to the tale, that has been proven to make money. Why not follow the proven template Japan does with their animation, where it peaks the interest of new audiences to seek out(spend money) on the source material? They the producers had the chance to animate the original tale and adds some layers to characters and plot, but no, let's subvert expectations, they will love, eat it up like swine and buy merch with no question. I didn't really enjoy this new take, first because of the bait and switch and then the late the episodes development that Scott was stopping himself from fighting for Ramona. This series assumes all viewers watch the movies or read the comics, I marvel that Brian O'Malley and the Producers that put money into getting this made didn't think about the long term game, this could have been a Ok development after you animated the sources material, got the new audience, secured the established audience, as is it creates division, those that wanted an animated adaption didn't get one, those that like the new take and know only that won't have anything less to purchase and enjoy. Does this improve the film? No. The chemistry between Scott and Ramona didn’t feel more believable, honestly felt less believable because Scott was missing for the majority of the show.
The highlight were the side characters such as the evil exes and Scott’s band.
But some performances such as Scott, Ramona, and Young Neil feel more deadpan compared to Matthew Patel, Lucas Lee, Gideon, and Knives. The performance felt inconsistent in quality.
Roxie was the most fleshed out of the exes, the rest were just comedy bits for this season.
Also future Ramona says she loves Scott, but how?! Why?!
And we’re going to criticize Scott two timing but we’re not going to confront Ramona seriously past Roxie? Like Lucas Lee and Todd or the Twins? No self reflection, improvement?
If they’re going to change the story so drastically as an opportunity to improve said story then use the most out of it.
What was the point of the Movie episode? Seeing Wallace home wreck Todd and Envy? Why Todd? Honestly thought it’d be Lucas Lee.

The visuals and ost for this show were absolutely perfect imo. Voice cast was a lot better, and michael cera's scott was such a huge improvement from his more apathetic awkward characterization from the film. I do have to say that I definitely think the show suffered from scott's prolonged absence. Even if the improved development of all the other characters was pretty great for the most part, I really do think scott's backstory and improvement of major character flaws kind of carried the original story for me. Hope we can see another season of the show to dig into the meat of his character more.

All that stuff STILL happened in the comics. Scott has always been kind of dopey. And we know he is TERRIBLE at break ups. Ramona is bad with communication. He thought the space she needed was a divorce. So his dumbass BECAME a evil ex. It's hilarious and poetic. It's a sweet ass semi-sequel. The evil exes were 1 dimensional jerks, and Ramona was always sort of a bitch to them growing up. This is a really cool way to promote growth and show depth of all the characters and give them room to be humans. Instead of pissed off people who get murdered. I thought it was a super rad addition to the lore. The creator wrote it after all.

If they were upfront about an Alternate Retelling then maybe their show wouldn't be talked about like this, but let's face it Kevin Smith is a d**k & how he approached the backlash to his MOTU series he earned his infamy. Since Bryan Lee O'Malley is not only the creator of the entire series, he's also the showrunner of this series, so it remains to be seen how this particular reception will be treated.
In fact, not just on Netflix's website itself, but Rotten Tomatoes & IMDB pretty much is misleading on the synopsis basically stating the basic plot of of the Graphic Novels & in general the 2010 movie plot without any mention of an 'Alternate Retelling'. There was probably a better way to advertise it, but by using a bait-and-switch method, which Netflix drummed up a negative reputation because of MOTU, I do not blame anyone coming to this conclusion.
Maybe Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is a good show, but now there's a negative stigma stapled to this show because of the advertising as well as the approach utilized with Kevin Smith's MOTU.

I think if you start to think that Scott is not the mc in this show, you can start to like much more what happens in the show.
Even though I would have love a 1 by 1 adaptation of the novels, this felt much more fresh, I am 100% sure that I enjoyed this more than however much I would’ve enjoyed a 1 by 1 adaptation. It’s great that we get an adaptation where Scott is not the focus of attention (at least not directly), but the whole world that surrounds his journey. I’ve always thought that at the end of the novel while Scott had a full character arc ramona was just starting to make a few steps towards changing as a person, and this totally solves that issue for me. And the other great thing is that in this reinterpretation of the show, the writers have the chance to create more stories about the world, since they’ve already established that this is not your original Scott pilgrim, and since this season has tackle most other character in a second season we can watch more of scott fr this time, since we didn’t see much of him.

I was expecting a series about the comic but since we have so many versions of the original story, from the original/movie/game , I’m glad they went this direction.

My thoughts exactly on Scott and Ramona's romance feeling better here but also with Scott being taken out for way too long.
I really think the show giving more attention to explore the sidecharacters is what makes this adaptation interesting but we've all been burned recently at the trend of a show being named after a character then being switched for a female lead that nobody likes, except this time we actually like Ramona as she dosen't fall into that half cut hair weirdo that dosen't resemble her original character.
Yet we did come here for Scott getting into fights so taking him out so early and not letting him appear untill much later is something these showrunners gata stop doing. I almost dropped this show because of that but videos like this give me a bit of hope the entire thing won't suck.
Sounds fun that they are setting Scott up to fight the evil exes again if the show continues but if they switch him out a 2nd time when that happens then I don't think theres any hope for these revivals.

I never read any of the graphic novels and I was pretty excited because I had heard there were some big differences from the 2010 film. From the way Netflix was advertising the series, it looked exactly like that, so seeing it deviate from the plot without being given much of a hint made me confused. It’s sort of like what The Last of Us Part 2 was for me, it was advertised as something completely different from the final product. Though I will say this was a lot better than TLOU2 for me. I was still entertained and I think it’s a unique way of writing a pseudo-sequel (?) to the original story.

Eh. I just think ramona is not that interesting of a character for them to focus so much on... especially nowadays, since she literally became one of the most overused archetypes ever. Plus, much like scott, shes not that good of a person, and rather is kinda toxic; the way they sort of sanctified her into being the ultimate hero to save scott (both in past and future) really felt off
The decision *not* to focus that much on Scott was absolutely the right decision, for sure, for not to dwell too much on the past all... but they couldve used this opportunity sooo much better to flesh out more of the league and secondary characters, and instead we just got ramona flowers: the show; which didnt feel nearly as unique as the source material was at its time... pretty much every single "villain" and even knives (which was always pretty secondary) felt a lot charismatic than ramona herself, which is questionable to say the least. For a while I had a hard time determining what this story was supposed to be, like a retelling or a revival, and then it hit me: I believe this show was meant to feel like a New Game plus, or slightly more egregious, post game DLC.
Like how you start a game over again after beating it, and new things are added like storylines, scenarios, and story arcs for side characters. This has been a practice game developers like Game freak and Atlus do, so I can see through that lens. And it's not uncommon for rebooted games to add new stuff to justify its existence, like Persona or Pokemon
I would say my only actual criticism is the framing device of having Ramona color her hair each episode. I liked what they were going for, but from afar it looks like they were trying to cut back on animation costs. Maybe it was meant to symbolize her resistance to change, since her future self was still doing it? Another nitpick is how they resorted to stereotypes for Wallace's comedy. That didn't age well when the graphic novel and movie came out, and it sticks out even worse here

I like this series and what they did. First off Scott Pilgrim main theme is the adaptation of the generational evolution of the pop culture. It referenced the 80s, 90s and the 2000s. The story can be anything it wants to be and back in 2008 when the movie adaptation came out, the production was so good it built its own following. The comic/book series was even expansive with its lore but the world of Scott pilgrims only has one rule, that it doesn't have anything in particular kind of ruleset. Meaning that was cool and interesting back then but this has been done and being made for more similar series. Spongebob, Regular Show, Amazing world of Gumball, Adventure time, Gravity falls. These series has the same kind of energy and pop culture reference as scott pilgrims but because these are more recent they even have more expanded universe and story than just a boy trying to chase a girl while also avoiding the fact that he is two timing. This series stopped and step back on what it had. And it had Characters other than Scott and Ramona. The craziness is being maintained but more especially the characters' growth was focused. Patel in the comic book/movie is Ramona's token brown boyfriend. But in this series he's just another guy who wants to try and accomplish his goal of performing broadway. The others were also treated the same and I think that was nice. It became a show that became self-aware of its weakness, being left by time and being too concentrated on Scott's personal issues when supposedly any character could've their own issues. I think it did well giving the fans sometime to watch a story other scott. I like Knives here the most. The joke about her is she's asian and is pretty much a virtuoso having to move on easily about Scott and realizing her potential was a nice touch about the show.

After watching Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, here's what I have to say. I loved it so much and the first episode genuinely caught me, and everyone else watching, off-guard. I thought it would be just like in the books and movie where Scott fights against Ramona's exes so he would date her, but instead, he "lost" and it because less about Scott and more about Ramona. I also love that we got development on Scott's friends and Ramona's exes. The series does surprisingly well with Ramona taking the lead.

I feel like they would've had a greater effect in exploring these characters and the journey of Scott and Ramona's relationship both with eachother and themselves by keeping Scott around. Like Scott becoming self aware perhaps and instead of beating the EX's down he and Ramona try to quell their pain through and then Scott learning more about Ramona through them, Ramona learning more about Scott, and then looking at their toxic traits from a more serious lens. And I understand the backlash from fans, it felt like in the same vain as He-Man, where they advertise the series as one way, but then pulled the rug. At this point I think people are tired of the Bait and Switch method. I enjoyed Scott don't get me wrong, but I really think the series would benefit more if had him working with Ramona and build their relationship together as the series progressed.

I liked the show but I felt the story lacking they're lucky the character stuff in Scott Pilgrim was always its greatest strength but it still felt kind of aimless as the ending felt like a beginning. The other problem that bothered me is that it's really made for people who already saw another vesion they don't even show us someone dying and turning into coins before we see Scott's death, it's one of the first more out there element in the story sure it's only explained in passing as a dismissive comment in both other versions but without seeing it established first I feel this scene could loose someone whose not familiar with the material completely, killing the main character first and the directing really put emphasis on it.

They should saved this idea for season 2 indeed of making it the main focus on it's own first season.

the problem is is the original story sees all the exes actually dying so. making it a straight adaptation for the first season and then giving the exes more spotlight in a season 2 would be a bit awkward. if you wanted the original story, the comics exist lol

one problem i have here, is that you said scott is the main character, he really isn't, the show might be named after him but really ramona is the main character, we explore her and her feelings much more than scott

I mean book 4-6 is completely different than the movie but it was nice to finally see the art style played out. I hope though if they ever do "Lost at Sea" they dont mess with it.

I don’t get how some people label scott at fault on hurting people around him when the premise gave you a face value plot, the exes formed an alliance to ruin Ramona’s love life and scott’s precious little life too except for knives, she’s the one who’s been hurt most here. In scott’s defense everyone is horrible😂. When he’s missing they just pick fights & hurt each other in the process although resolved without anyone getting turned into coins & some even became friends.

There's really no reason why he would fight them. Roxy, the Twins, Luke, and Todd are all on friendly terms now. The only ones with villainous intentions left are Matthew and Gideon and neither are interested in Ramona anymore.

    Personally I am torn.
Like it was there in the title but the trailer should of shown new footage to shows it was a different perspective to the comic!
The biggest grevious I have is that the future stuff ruined the comic and/ or the film if you believed it to be canon to the comic/ film ending. I mean Scott (and Ramona) had inner conflict to work with and they resolved it at the end. The future however was like a big FU to Scott. Like with the divorce, he didn't self reflect and moved on, nope he became Akuma!
Also I loved and hate the exes getting character growth (ironic the twins didn't). I mean it was cool they got more screentime and Todd fate was way more hilarious when compared to the comc. Now if they make season 2, most of them don't have a reason to fight and killed Scott nor do I want to see them getting defeated (yes I know they respawn). I do wonder if Gideon still got his exes in a sleeping chamber?
Can't help to think Bryan kinda redid his work to downplay Scott breakup with Knives and what it did to her and redeemed Ramona.
Overall it was still decent as the animation and soundtrack were great. It more about if you can "let go" of the comic and/ or film and liked it for doing its own thing!

This was a bait and switch...plain and simple. The trailers were misleading. If the the creator and writers wanted to expand on the Scott Pilgrim universe, don't put in Scott's name in the title and then have him absent in most of the season. It's lazy and scumy

I feel like the working title for this was "The Disappearance of Scott Pilgrim" because why not imitate something else from anime. Still, always supportive of artists that try to be ambitious and change things up a bit.

I always thought the other bits that are left out of the comic could be filled in better, but this just wasn't very funny or interesting. And I REALLY wanted it to be. I think the studios are just literally running the writing rooms and telling them what to put in. I think I laughed out loud maybe three times.
It made me want to reread the comics though.

Alright for people who have read the original I think they most certainly will not like this. Personally for me the show wants to be judged based off of its own merits but the problem is that they constantly remind you of the original and also it was marketed as an adaptation for fans waiting for said adaptation for about a decade so we will be rightfully mad. Besides that I thought the show itself was not that good it lacked any sort of nuance whatsoever and felt super hamfisted. When the characters were sad or your supposed to pity them it just went completely full throttle there was no gray area and lacked any real depth it was just so plain and simple. Ramona as a character is just so boring it feels like she's just perfect and super strong on her own and doesn't need anyone also it makes no sense why Ramona is so in love with Scott all of a sudden because their relationship did not grow at all they barely even interacted with each other at all.

I don't like it. It's a switch and bait with the advertising of Netflix. Creator Interview is a "not 100%" adaption, but this is just plain boring. More like "The side characters show with a little Scott Pilgrim"
But the real problem ist the flat jokes, bad sync (the voices don't feel like the expression of the chars, more monotonous).

I really enjoyed the show, but everything regarding its "plot" and messages.... idk, pretty stupid and shallow. like, the whole point is learning not to run away and stuff but that was already the point in the comic so...
i felt weird old scott is the villain because RAMONA is now the protagonist, so it doesn't really feel that great JQJDJA
