I think the series works really well as an alternate timeline. Ramona's story being the main focus helps us see how despite being the "manic pixie dream girl" she really hurt a lot of people by refusing to talk about her feelings.
It also developed the characters outside Scott Pilgrim, since he’s already fleshed out as the protagonist. And making his future self the villian, a big risk that turns out to be a very genius move. Cause considering Scott’s social life, he was already set on a path to be a villian, considering how the people around him treated him, yet we saw how well they were better off with him gone, yet even they missed while he has gone and still being revealed to still be decent people at the same time, even helping Ramona find him. Though I could see them realize Older Scott made realize how that taking their friend for granted may have world destroying consequences, likely leading them to treat Scott better.
honesty how they made ramona face her ex in a more mature and melodramic way is so intresting and they totally chance points of views which is such a twist. What a great way of humanizing and adding to the exs who were nothing more than boss battles previously.
It was a bit of a let down that there was so little Scott, because I LOVE everything about him in this adaption. However, it allowed the show to explore the other characters on a much deeper level. Loved what they did with young neil, and Wallace is great as usual.

One that cant take the story or characters to places it hadnt gone before. And I love it for that. Matt actually got screen time. Like. Julie and Gideon are together. Like. WHAT?! And they hinted at more! Im stoked!
I missed the vegan police the most, though. and more of the girl gay relationships. But. We had a Black character with screen time. We got to see Gideon... being human? Idk. It's just. It's. Wild. It's wild that he could get such new stories out of these characters, while still keeping it to both Scott and Romana being both, traumatized dumbasses in love. Like. Scott is silly. And yeah, Romana is kinda like "the brains," of the too. But she's as dorky, sweet, and silly as he is in moments. Like. Scott's the dog, Romans more a cat. Takes a while to warm up, but SUPER loyal to her little golden retervier. And for to be as obsessed with him. Idk. It was nice to see the role reversal. Maybe it should have been called "Romona," but. It's all about Scott even when he's not there. Idk. I just. I was bummed at first, felt the cut a bunch of stuff... till I got to the end of the first episode. And then I realised? They did that on purpose. To take me on a new adventure. And I'm so glad they did
Still sucks they didn’t have Ramona change her hairstyle through out the show like in the comics. In the comics the length of her hair represented how long she was with her ex
I think it was done well. Her hair changing shows her fixing the problems with her exes. Also the best way to become better is for you to learn to live with your exes. Not get your bf to murder them. That's why she ended up divorcing scott.
I don’t know what you’re talking about? She changed her hair each episode, at different times, different colors. I think the anime is amazing, but I still love the comics and movie more
Something I think was good foreshadowing for Scott actually not dying: Scott (in the present at least) isn't a villain, therefore he shouldn't have poofed into coins. In both the comics and movie, when Scott dies in the end, he doesn't poof. His body just falls down like a normal dead person would if they were straight up impaled.
The show confirms something the author said on Tumblr about the Exes' fates in the comics: none of them actually died, they just respawned where they came from and didn't bother going back to Toronto because it wasn't worth the hassle.
Thing is, Roxie is still the only woman on the league. Even though it was indeed a phase the relationship was still VERY MUCH REAL. Meaning real ups and downs, you have to confront and apologize for them on your part to move on which Ramona does beautifully to the point Roxie can still be a friend.
There is 0% Hate in a movie, because I’ve been told everyone it was an anime movie but they wouldn’t believe. And there is DEFINITELY no hate in Netflix Anime mostly because Ramona was a Netflix Delivery, and all stories changed differently after Scott’s “Taken off” plots, Zero Casualties in a follow 8 episodes (MAJOR SPOILERS ENTIRELY). So I give it a 9/10.
This is actually a welcome surprise to be honest. If they ever get to what happened in the end of episode 8 and have a new storyline with that, I won’t complain because both Gideon and Julie could be awesome antagonists
Believe it or not... I actually liked this one a bit better than the movie. While I do agree that it should have been called Ramona Flowers instead, as an alternate version of the storyline, it taught us that everyone in this show is just that...human. Even the exes were human and it showed the relationships in more of a depth than the movie did. Also i loved Ramona learning to accept herself in the end. That was probably my favourite part of the show. Could it have been a bit better by showing more Scott since it was his series, of course. That was the one thing that I had against this series. But I loved the rest of it for what it was. Hopefully we can see more seasons in the future.
I mean the movie and the graphic novels referenced Sonic in them too. The movie used sound effects from the games and in the books ,in book 4 the logo on the first few pages referenced the Sonic 2 logo and when Roxie died she burst into animals instead of coins referencing how the robots die in the old Sonic games. Scott and Kims first band before Sex Bob-bomb was literally called Sonic & Knuckles. Even in the physical re-release of the video game the alternate cover has Scott doing the Sonic Adventure 1 pose. If anything it would have been weird if the anime didn't reference sonic at all lol.
I choose to consider that the anime is a continuation of the movie but set in a new time line. I think that older/even older Scott and Remona are the same ones from the movie and because of older/even older Scott's screwing up with time is what led to this new world. And my reason for thinking this is Young Niel's movie. According to older/even older Scott and Remona, the movie is based off of their lives and the director(or someone else) said that the movie is a world where scott won his fight with Matt.
Actually you are not far off from the mark, prior to the "movie shoot" there are mild meta comics poking fun at comic and movie. The "movie" script, is supposed to be the retelling of their (older scott and ramona's) events which would be the movie. As well, only comic and Netflix show briefly hinted that Gideon/Gordon may also be the "rival" school jerk who kidnapped Kim before Scott dumped her. A lot of obscure connect the dots between the three that read way to deep and to obvious at the same time.
The Sonic reference in episode 1 sets it up as the movie and the anime are two different things that have the same focal point(best example is Heroes when reference "butterflies ").
Tbh, I watched the entire anime (without Episode 1) yesterday. I really liked it! Sure, it’s not an adaptation of the comics, but it told a tangible, cohesive story that expanded the established characters into 3 dimensional characters. The new plot, took some getting used to, but I found it quite refreshing!
So disappointed, I was expecting a faithful adaptation better than the movie, but I was wrong. It follows the same format as Netflix’s Masters of the Universe when you think of it. Didn’t know it would be an new story.
The fact that you're repeating a script proves that you were never a fan to begin with. As someone who IS a fan of the original, this version was absolute perfection.

Try everything. It really was a glorified fan-fiction. I probably would have enjoyed it more if it didn't have the Scott Pilgrim license. I will say, I loved the animation, the music and the voice acting. My biggest complaints are the story, departure from the source material, no Scott for 90% and the lip flap syncing was absolutely terrible at times. Also didn't help that the trailers were very misleading, literally making it look like either an accurate book adaptation or at least an animated version of the movie.
EXACTLY. I hate how they mislead us with the marketing for this show. I also hate how it almost feels at times like they reduced Scott down to a simple MacGuffin in his own fucking show.
What I love about this version; is that it acknowledges that it was Ramona that wronged everyone in the series, not only with the ex's but also Scott. Though Scott was still the freeloader douche he was in the original. It really was Ramona that was the true villain the whole time, thus became a story of self-redemption.
This show is apparently more of a Romona show, which is fine, but I wish the marketing didn't mislead everyone into thinking this is going to be a faithful animated adaption for Scott Pilgrim. This falls into the same problem with Masters of the Universe: Revelations. The trailers for the show made it seem like it was going to be about He-Man in his never-ending fight against Skeletor, but the series itself was apparently more about Teela. Dear Netflix marketing. Stop misleading people with your trailers. Just advertise the truth, make it an enticing enough to get people to want to watch it, and then those people will definitely watch it.
The marketing never implied it was going to be a faithful adaptation of the narrative. Especially seeing as there were scenes in the trailer that weren't in the original graphic novel. You're just upset that you didn't get the exact same storyline for the third time in a row.
@trailobyte474 The trailers for the show put more emphasis on Scott Pilgrims' presence, playing in his band, him oggling over Romona, and the evil exes were being conveyed as antagonist to Scott. The new scenes don't really convey that it would be a total detraction since even the most faithful manga to anime adaptions add new scenes that are not from the source material. Just to be clear, I don't have a problem that this show was going to a what-if scenario and then shift focus to Romona as the primary protagonist. In fact, I like the show and found it very entertaining. I just found that the advertisement for this show is misleading. It's like if there's a trailer for a new Spider-Man show that showcases the superhero fighting supervillains and dealing with relatable personal issues, but when the show does come out, it's actually focuses more on Harry Osborn and his own view on the wall crawler and his best friends escapades. If the advertisement is going to convey one thing, people are immediately going to expect it to be that thing. If it doesn't become that thing, then it's just a lie.
@@deadpoolrockz6410 The trailers did NOT convey that. There was very little dialogue in the trailers. There was never any indication that it wasn't going to be a 1/1 faithful adaptation especially seeing as they included scenes that weren't in the original graphic novels. You placed your own expectations on the vague marketing and were upset that you didn't get the interpretation that you wanted. Furthermore, Brian Lee O'Malley stated before the release that the anime was going to be different. You just listened to what you wanted to hear.

I've got to admit that Ramona was such a bland character that I didn't even realize that she was the lead until episode 4. I legit thought it was following the league
I had a blast with this show. I really enjoyed how they basically said we have told you the same story in a comic, a movie and a videogame, so let's go in another direction and I freaking loved it
Personally I was disappointed on the anime adaptation, I thought it was going to be similar to the movie just with more details and dialogue on the characters, but they changed the story completely. The hole time travel thing and alternate timelines is getting old now, literally every movie is doing the same thing I mean just stay faithful to the story PS: they did Gideon graves dirty losing to Matthew like really?!! And Scott wasn’t really the main character i mean Romona was
I feel disappointed for Scott Pilgrim vs. the world I thought it would be epic like the comic, movie , or video game. This could have been more like a season 2 because the first season Wanted to see the épic fight between Mathew, Lucas Stun doubles, Scott talk to envi and fighting the twins
As someome watches the movie and tead the book..this was great, definitely confusing for new folks, but definitely feel sequel and redemption to remona, scott himself to relfect whar he done even if he wasn't in much Hope they make a sequel to this after that post credit on episode 8
Change also means surprises, and I love surprises! Also it was written by the creator of the comic, so I'm more than fine with the new perspectives and all! As for Ramona being the protagonist... I prefer girl protagonists over male protagonists anyway so that one was a pleasant surprise lol

@WatchMojo Funny thing, Knives actually does get her highlights punched out by *SPOILER* Even Older Scott *SPOILER* in a quick frame in the last episode.
I already enjoyed that show. I hope there can be another season where Gordon Goose and Julie become the anatogists. Maybe Ramona would say to Julie during the fight “Whatever you Scott is not up to him.” And I wonder if someone from the future (Not an older Scott) went in time to try to break Scott and Ramona.
I really liked and enjoyed the series, especially the idea of setting the story through an alternative timeline from the main events of both the graphic novels and 2010 movie.
I totally loved it!!! I’ve never read the original graphic novel, but I did see the movie and think that it was probably a bad adaptation. Even if this new version departs from the source material, it’s much better made. It seems to me that the creator probably was imagining how much more could be explored from the same premise. Not so much wanting to address any faults they saw in the original, but considering what was missing, and what could be explored with the characters.
I've read the first comic book and loved it. Planned to finish the comics but I never did. Now I was waiting to watch the show thinking it would be 1:1 adaptation of the comic and now I don't know what I should watch/read first
Could this top the list of best new animated series of 2023? Or will this be classified as anime? And 2023 has been a strong year for new animated series.
Looks interesting but hate that Netflix is still back to their bait and switch MO. Pass on this, the classic live movie and comics are enough to satisfy me. They should have just made a new show altogether.
I knew it was different, but I still loved the anime. I liked how we get one of the best characters, Romana Flowers as the protagonist and that she has to deal with her exes, but in a different way. I like to think of it as an alternate timeline.
Wow I havent watched this yet, but to find out this wasnt an anime adaptation of the comics but something completely different is pretty disappointing.
Marketing was the issue for this show. They got people to watch by showing us the story we enjoyed, but then the actual show has nothing to do with that and focuses on the aspects of the graphic novel and film that most people are least interested in. If they had just been honest about what they were offering, then the people who wanted to watch that would watch it, and the people who weren't interested could save some time.
Oh so that does mean the comic books ending is useless since Scott and Romona didn't work out their relationship and Scott hasn't changed at all and is actually worse as a person
@@jaydenlopez3636 no they just had a tiff and Romona wanted to spend some time apart (she still loved him). Scott has always been an idiot so he took it as she was leaving him. And since they got married it was worse than when Envy Adam’s broke up with him so he did what he did causing this “sequel” anime. Doesn’t mean the comic book ending is useless.
Great disappointment but without a doubt the worst thing is the terrible job of the actors giving voices to the characters, some seem to have received their lines at the time of recording them.
What's cool about the Netflix Scott Pilgrim what how right in the end of the Very First Episode, they decided to take a Different Approach with the original story while still keeping its charm and the characters involvement intact. Say what you will about how Illumination's The Grinch and The Lorax compared to the older Cartoon Versions, Or even the new Willy Wonka movies compared to the 1970s but I really like it when they decided to make new twists to the original story to make the characters stand out and make it more unique. Anyone else know of another property that provides a new Twist to a familiar tale. (I know Netflix did Dr Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham well enough to create Two Seasons.)
The one thing that makes me pissed to my core is the fact Ramona works for Netflix’s DVD Rental business, WHEN THE SERIES CAME OUT THE SAME YEAR NETFLIX SHUT THE DVD RENTALS DOWN.
I enjoy the hell out of the movie and the novels but I think I actually enjoyed this show a bit more. Maybe that’s because of the alternate timeline and getting to see more of some characters and different sides of them. I felt it was all cleverly written, with great action moments and lots of funny moments.

They did it on the flash backs, her hair length changes
@@mrcoolandcutedude true
I liked that Ramona's relationship with Roxie wasn't just a bisexual phase anymore.
We stan canonical bisexuals.
It was
I guess she finally decide to passed her bifurious
That was more pandering
Thing is, Roxie is still the only woman on the league. Even though it was indeed a phase the relationship was still VERY MUCH REAL. Meaning real ups and downs, you have to confront and apologize for them on your part to move on which Ramona does beautifully to the point Roxie can still be a friend.
I really loved how knives joined the band at the end.
I love how they reimagined the comic book series into the anime series
I feel like if this gets a season two we will get more of what we want more fights more kissing you know stuff like that
Ramona’s job, and the Pac-Man reference change is already enough
Knives does get the highlights punched out of her hair at the end during the big fight.
Ramona as well all of her 7 evil exes having their time to shine will 4ever be an icon ✨✨💅
The sonic references are probably because of Sonic Prime, Boom and X (4kids) all being on Netflix...ugh
Well the "movie" director is called Edgar Wrong. They couldn't make it more obvious.
The Sonic reference in episode 1 sets it up as the movie and the anime are two different things that have the same focal point(best example is Heroes when reference "butterflies ").
I’m just happy Patel gets more screen time outside of his fight. Good for him 😅😅😅
Tbh, I watched the entire anime (without Episode 1) yesterday.
@@TheTrailburner fair enough, in the end, I wasn’t expecting a whole new take on the story. So I was a little butt hurt about it. I’ll try again, this time with an open mind.

I think they are insinuating that each one is a different universe, the "Scott from the future" is exactly from the time the live action released he said "13 years ago" video game, live action, anime all different universes... my theory though

6.) Same as the 7
5.) Yes, but don't make him a chatterbox. Either minimize his dialogue or make him communicate non-verbally.

they can be either kids pre-teens, teenagers, young adults and also full fledged adults
the possibilities are endless, especially if they are planning multiple sequels that could use such possibilities
Never thought Scott would battle his future self (reminds me of a tattletaling nerd and a Master builder who was formerly unspecial)
Mannnn if Old Scott would’ve just stayed 😔, I’ll never forget the “10 years and not even a single text”
What I love about this version; is that it acknowledges that it was Ramona that wronged everyone in the series, not only with the ex's but also Scott. Though Scott was still the freeloader douche he was in the original.
It really was Ramona that was the true villain the whole time, thus became a story of self-redemption.
This was acknowledged in the movie as well.
I get it now! “Scott Pilgrim Take Off” = Take Off Scott Pilgrim
Anagram for Ya
Comics and Film: Ramona works for Amazon
Anime: She works for Netflix
So one’s the Amazon timeline and the other is the Netflix timeline.
Scott losing the battle against Matt had a crazy butterfly effect huh?
Well he didn’t really lose, he was removed mid fight
Very interesting! I’m for sure watching this later on.
They pulled a He Man
This show is apparently more of a Romona show, which is fine, but I wish the marketing didn't mislead everyone into thinking this is going to be a faithful animated adaption for Scott Pilgrim.
I think the misleading is purely intentional
It was bait and switch fuck what anyone else says, the film was lighting in a bottle Can't capture it twice nuff said
I noticed in the part when they fight even older Scott knives does have the highlights punched out of her hair
It's not the same
@tvirus9369 still happens , I think they are insinuating that each one is a different universe, the "Scott from the future" is exactly from the time the live action released he said "13 years ago" video game, live action, anime all different universes... my theory though
good job about Biggest Differences in The Scott Pilgrim Anime from Top 10
I was really wanting this to be a Comic adaptation. The movie was great but it wasn’t 100% true to the comics. I was hoping this was but it barely even had Scott in it!
10 biggest differences? Well, number 1: the whole thing. That was easy XD
I've already tweeted the "Top 10 TV shows and Movies to Watch If You Like Brynhildr in the Darkness (2014) and Scott Pilgrim vs.The World(2011) is ranked at #9.
If you LIKE or HATE Scott Pilgrim Takes off( 2023); then you should watch Brynhildr in the Darkness (2014), at least once.
Netflix made it lame, the opening sucks,no battle of the band, the graphics sucks with less action.😑
In 4:34 Knives does get the highlights punched out of her hair. It was a small little easter egg for those eagle eyed viewers lol
I've got to admit that Ramona was such a bland character that I didn't even realize that she was the lead until episode 4. I legit thought it was following the league
For me I like the anime better. I still like the movie, but there’s just something about the anime I find so awesome
The hole time travel thing and alternate timelines is getting old now, literally every movie is doing the same thing I mean just stay faithful to the story
PS: they did Gideon graves dirty losing to Matthew like really?!!
And Scott wasn’t really the main character i mean Romona was
If Matthew fought the video game version of Gideon he would have been turned into 100000 tiny pirate themed pieces
Aktooally, Knives DOES still get the highlights punched out of her hair. Happens in the last fight, but no one draws attention to it.
Fingers cross we get a second season, as I feel like we're just getting started with this new take on the story of Scott Pilgrim.
So this is basically like the new He-man series.
the only difference is that there is no scott in the neflix version bruh
As someome watches the movie and tead the book..this was great, definitely confusing for new folks, but definitely feel sequel and redemption to remona, scott himself to relfect whar he done even if he wasn't in much
Hope they make a sequel to this after that post credit on episode 8
Love it and waiting for season two
There well not be a season 2
Change also means surprises, and I love surprises! Also it was written by the creator of the comic, so I'm more than fine with the new perspectives and all!
As for Ramona being the protagonist... I prefer girl protagonists over male protagonists anyway so that one was a pleasant surprise lol
I argue maybe this is Scott Pilgrims Future will be, a Multi Possiblity Story that can Changed true Time, like the TMNT.
Absolutely loved it. 🙌
I wonder what other adaptation Netflix is going to do in the future?Captain Planet,Freakazoid,Cool World,Hancock(2010),Kid Icarus Uprising,Rock a Doodle(Don Bluth),TankGirland Dreamwork Rise of Guardians!
@WatchMojo Funny thing, Knives actually does get her highlights punched out by *SPOILER* Even Older Scott *SPOILER* in a quick frame in the last episode.
If we got a s2 which I doubt I would like Scott going against his exes but I do like the happy ending tho and older evil Scott was pretty good
Honestly, him vs his exes wouldn't make much sense now.
Maybe as a season 0?
I already enjoyed that show. I hope there can be another season where Gordon Goose and Julie become the anatogists. Maybe Ramona would say to Julie during the fight “Whatever you Scott is not up to him.”
And I wonder if someone from the future (Not an older Scott) went in time to try to break Scott and Ramona.
Scott Pilgrim is Experiencing the Evangelion Cycle.
Yes that’s Is true too many endings in one
I really liked and enjoyed the series, especially the idea of setting the story through an alternative timeline from the main events of both the graphic novels and 2010 movie.
I totally loved it!!! I’ve never read the original graphic novel, but I did see the movie and think that it was probably a bad adaptation. Even if this new version departs from the source material, it’s much better made. It seems to me that the creator probably was imagining how much more could be explored from the same premise. Not so much wanting to address any faults they saw in the original, but considering what was missing, and what could be explored with the characters.
😭the comics are amazing I’ve been reading them since I watched the anime and it just hits different
I've read the first comic book and loved it. Planned to finish the comics but I never did. Now I was waiting to watch the show thinking it would be 1:1 adaptation of the comic and now I don't know what I should watch/read first
I hope this doesn’t mean comic Scott got divorced
I’d honestly give this anime series a 7 out of 10
Could this top the list of best new animated series of 2023? Or will this be classified as anime? And 2023 has been a strong year for new animated series.
I f*cking adored it! I know ist's not a sequel, perse. but, c'mon! it's a Scott Pilgrim (kinda) new story!
Looks interesting but hate that Netflix is still back to their bait and switch MO. Pass on this, the classic live movie and comics are enough to satisfy me. They should have just made a new show altogether.
I loved gideon and julie, the most unexpected pair but just so perfect for each other
I think the title still works. He literally takes off.
I have such mixed feelings
So, no bait and switch complaints like with He-man? Okay I guess 😅
I knew it was different, but I still loved the anime. I liked how we get one of the best characters, Romana Flowers as the protagonist and that she has to deal with her exes, but in a different way. I like to think of it as an alternate timeline.
6:28 Gideon a loser when I saw the episode. I wish he was defeated by scott because this is what a worst way go on
That's Netflix for you , ALWAYS changing the source Material......(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
It wasn’t Netflix meddling. It was the author’s decision
Wow I havent watched this yet, but to find out this wasnt an anime adaptation of the comics but something completely different is pretty disappointing.
I thought that originally towards the second episode but trust me either way it is still a great show

@@Twostraightwhitemalesreact to each their own then, everyone I’ve talked to has said they’ve really liked it. It’s ok if you don’t though.
The main difference is the anime is more a sequel to the Comic and movie. More the comic though.

I loved the new version… definitely broke expectations
The one thing that makes me pissed to my core is the fact Ramona works for Netflix’s DVD Rental business, WHEN THE SERIES CAME OUT THE SAME YEAR NETFLIX SHUT THE DVD RENTALS DOWN.
I was not expecting for Scott to become the Evil Ex.
I enjoy the hell out of the movie and the novels but I think I actually enjoyed this show a bit more. Maybe that’s because of the alternate timeline and getting to see more of some characters and different sides of them. I felt it was all cleverly written, with great action moments and lots of funny moments.
