- Adam has just returned from New Zealand, where he met with some of the prop makers for the upcoming film Mortal Engines. Using their designs, Adam makes a replica of the character Anna Fang's striking sidearm, showing paint and weathering techniques to make this piece look at home in the movie's striking world!

I really love these one day builds but just wish Adam would tell us more of the details of what hes doing. Like after thinning the molotov with the laquar thinner can he keep the left overs of that $35 bottle of thinned molotov? Did he clear coat after using the molotov and what with? What brand and color pearlescent paint was he using? What tools is he using. Like in the case of the pipe cutter and then the tool he used to clean the freshly cut edges off the pipe? Etc.

Considering how few videos Clickspring has on his channel and how rarely he uploads, the fact that almost all machinists on RUclips reference him and praise his work speaks volumes to the quality of his work and how much effort goes into making even a single of his videos.
I love checking out the background of the shop as Adam works, and noticing all the cool stuff he and his crew have made, like that Nuka Cola cap, the Ark of the Covenant, that raven, space suits and various scifi props. Thanks to the cinematographer and Adam Savage!

For the rub'n'buff: if you stretch the cloth over something flat (like a spatula or something) it makes it easier to only coat the highest parts of a model.
You should have just done the triggers and hammers with brass.
or electro-colored the aluminium yellow, not that it gets gold, but it is better than this paint job.
Molotov Chrome's ARE amazing! All the metallics they make, really. Their spraycans will even blast through the moisture on wet surfaces allowing you to paint fences right after a rainstorm and definitely not paint graffiti on buildings.
In general the graffiti market has a lot of great products that could come in handy in any workshop. Some top notch stuff out there.
Shouldn’t you have added red to the gold paint to combat the greennes
I was thinking the same thing, usually gold comes out with some browns/reds along side ochres and desaturated yellows
or just annodized / heat annodized the part.
@@aria8928 heat anodizing aluminum is tricky and very easy to go too far and end up with a blue instead of a gold
I work in the ink industry and to make a gold metalic ink we use a base that has aluminum powder in it to make it shine and we use yellow and either orange or warm red. Just yellow looks wrong unless it's an already orange-ish yellow.

Loved the painting of the body looks great. However, I dont understand why yellow paint? Doesn't look gold to me at all just yellow painted metal.
Yeah I think Adam doesn't entirely remember what gold looks like. It's probably the hardest thing to fake, but using several passes of brown, copper, yellow, green, silver is necessary.
I think he decided he liked the green look more or maybe the camera didn't quite capture the color right maybe our screens aren't properly showing it there is a multitude of possibilities but most likely adam said I like that green so I'll keep it
One... Day... Build... Ppl complain about the videos not coming out frequently enough and not actually being one day. I got the feeling he was getting towards the end of the shooting day and wanted to try the new technique.
@@RupeeRhod One... Day... Build... I think Adam know's exactly what gold looks like. He owns a GOLD PLATED C-3PO. He could have taken several days to get the perfect looking gold. But then it wouldn't be a One Day Build, the video would be longer, take more time/effort to produce and ppl would complain.
He tried a new technique. It may not have had the best results. He'll use that knowledge the next time he makes something.

As awesome as every part of making these things obviously is, it’s always the painting and polishing at the end that really amazes me. It just makes everything so authentic and ‘real’. It’s the one bit I could never master when I used to make models.
How to tell how much Adam really cares about a prop: How many weathering techniques does he use?
This one: just black paint.
I have a feeling that's why the triggers didn't come out very well, too. He's certainly doing this cause he wants to, but it's obviously not a very important project to him and you can definitely tell.
I see your point, but to be fair that was after 1) primer, 2) silver, 3) blue, 4) rub'n'buff, and 5) clear coat. It's not like he didn't put some effort in!
Well, he did use 95 hours of his day 3d printing it. Doesn't leave much time after that for extra details.
Movie looks poop anyway, your typical "Look at out amazing CG!" movie.
I am an oil painter and teacher and one thing to keep in mind when using a transparent color over another color (called glazing in painting) is that a lighter color over a darker one will always shift the lighter color cooler; i.e. bluer. Thats why a warm but light hued yellow over the aluminum (which depending on what it reflects is either lighter or darker than the yellow but for the sake of this example we are referring to the darker) will appear greenish, because yellow + blue = green.

Among others things, watching Adam do his one day builds is helping to maintain my sanity through the Covid-19 situation. I've been a fan for years since Mythbusters, and am so happy that he is giving a glimpse into the worlds of makers from all walks. Thanks for doing what you do, Adam!

The weapon looks absolutely amazing. Still love Adam talking us through the steps of recreating this prop. But the camera movements and the editing of Joey Fameli is really great in this video. I enjoyed watching it a lot!
I like the fact that the movie isn't out yet, so you probably had a more unique approach than usual.
The chartreuse colored hammers kind of ruin it for me. Not only do they look weird, they really don't look like gun hammers, even as make believe gun parts. 🤔 Maybe if they we're an actual gold color they would look different?? 😪
But this is a replica! The only thing they have to look like is the original. What colour were they?

I agree, I think a "dirtied" brass would have looked better. The bright, clean, yellow look didnt fit with the overall look of the gun. The gun itself looks beautiful however.

Whoever does the editing I really do appreciate that you quiet the surrounding noises such as a shop fan and or compressor. It really allows the viewer to stay engaged like when he is using the drill press and it goes completely quiet as he thinks. I love that because it allows me to do the same on what his plan would be. It may sound dumb but thank you!
Adam you have an amazing shop with every tool a man could dream of.
Saw this movie at the special Q&A screening in Sydney last week, truly remarkable film and was above and beyond what I expected going in (having not read the books). The world theyve crafted is incredible and I am itching for more, Weta's work is just oozing at the seams in this film and I love every bit of it.
Would absolutely love to see more props built and or shown off from the film!

Next time try magnets brother and really for anything you need to "quick-flick" open and shut, just a suggestion because most people just forget about the magic of the magnet...

@@MrMrbrianbechtel You mount and pair relatively small neodymium magnets. They're strong enough that you can mount them on the reverse of a surface without breaking through the visible side of a surface as well. The actual material is irrelevant, hence being able to use them to magnet mount plastic and resin model parts.

5:00 Thank you for this. Lots of people also often forget/disregard how much time artists spend modeling, just because "it's digital therefore it must be easy"...
Still, 3d designing this thing costed 6 hours, doing that by hand would be 10 times as much work.
It's WAAAAAY easier to design it in a computer.
think most of the people who say its quick and easy are speaking more about the stuff thats been put out on 3dprinting sites already im sure theres teasuretroves of 3dprinting forums that just have insane amounts of designs that make nearly everything "easier" even if it takes 100hours to print but yes doing everything entirely from scratch takes time
@@joost199207 errrr.... 6 hours to make the finished digital file printable. Not modeling it from scratch. That might take a week with those details.
6 hours infornt of a PC and then just wait till it prints. Not hard work at all.
the 6 hours was just the time spent to get it ready for the printer. Adam got the files from the studio so that didnt include the time that the studio took to design it.

The way adam holds the piece and drills it, to me it's dangerous. Because you can accidentally drill your own hand and that's not good. It give me shivers.

great video, although normally when i watch youtube videos while working on my prop projects i get stuff done. with these adam videos i get nothing accomplished except a joyful video experience! yes there were things he could change, yes there was nitpicks to be had but hell many eyes find more things. i need to go watch this movie when it comes out!
I am truly amazed that a man of Adams skill and experience finds it acceptable to drill into several different items whilst holding them in his hand! even at slow speeds a floor in the material could allow the drill bit to pass through and straight into his hand!
The sound of a scroll saw is so nostalgic for me! My first power tool that was actually mine, not my dad's, was an old Craftsman scroll saw my grandpa found at a garage sale. That was 6th grade, and now I'm a sophomore in college and I still use it all the time.

I could be completely wrong but I feel like from a mechanical stand point the hammers would be a little more comfortable the other way around
Nah, but they would probably look better if they were "cocked" (all the way back) but they are facing the correct way since the hammer was that way.
There is a lot of things mechanically suspect with this gun. I mean, rule of cool and all, but yes, the hammers would be uncomfortable to cock manually as the spur faces the same was as the hammer face, not away as is typical. The hammers also don't line up with the chambers, so as is they wouldn't even fire without some hideously complicated interiors. To make it reasonable the hammers would have to be in entirely different positions, or else it would need a different firing mechanism entirely.
Also, the quad trigger thing is weird, and just wouldn't work. You would need to pull you finger out of the trigger guard entirely, and put it on the new trigger to fire again, instead of just relaxing your finger to reset it.
Unless they are meant to be self cocking, I mean who'd physically want to cock for damn hammers anyway.
Let's take a moment to note that the side holes in the barrel already take away all functionality from this *gun*. Looks cool though
Allahpaca that’s actually one of the few functional things that work here. The holes can simply be in the frame, not the barrels. It would lower the weight.
This piece, which printed really nicely in PLA, seems like a prime candidate for SLA resin printing. Especially with all that scroll work.

The yellow is too yellow..not really gold..and I'm pretty sure the hammers are backwards..tried finding images but could only find fast gifs of the gun and it doesn't look right...
I think they are facing the correct way. I think the problem is they should have been installed on the other end of the slots. That way when they swing forward they will move through the channels.
The trigger looks like it's backwards as well

The trigger definitely looks backwards.
In the trailer the hammers are the other way around from what i can tell (official trailer at the 2:27 mark) where she puts the gun in the holster, you get a view of the hammers there. they are also the same colour blue instead of the yellow/gold.
so, yea.. pretty sure they're backwards.
As with every build Adam does there always seems to be something I completely disagree with. In this case it's the trigger and hammers. Absolutely beautiful bild overall but those parts turned out hideous,

Trigger is just flat without contours with flairs where your finger would be for comfort. A knurled thumb rest on hammers and reverse the curve of the hammers, unless the gimmick is cocking the gun by the front of the hand actuating all hammers simultaneously?
I know it's just a movie prop, but I don't know how it would work! Even side by side shot guns have two triggers.
I love how he talked about Clickspring. One of the best maker channels out there. When he spoke about working with aluminum I immediately thought about Clickspring's filing techniques.
I'm really not sure about the colors here. Not only is the yellow really distracting, but I think the blue just makes it look like a toy, or at least not very believable. Beyond that though, the build itself is beautifully detailed
Awesome build! Next time try mixing the blue straight into the chrome for an even coat and use real gold metallic paints.. but weathering shall hide all sins ;)
Earprotection mydude, also maybe add some lead or something heavy in the hollow handle to give it weight and stability in the hand?

The only thing that looks off to me on it is the "gold" you tried to make Adam, it seems.. wrong some how.. it might just be camera.. but it just .. looks off.. and I know that's not exactly 'helpful' but yeah.. anyway great to see another great replica, and looking forwards to seeing Mortal Engines, Peter and Christians work tends to be a good watch no matter what and be interesting to see their take on the world of the books..
I agree, it looks lime green. I think it looks like too futuristic of a color to go with the steampunk aesthetic.

Dude.. the Mortal Engines quartet were the first series of books I ever got my head into as a kid, they are absolutely fantastic. Super hyped for Peter Jacksons movie version :D
This gun, although far more exquisite and ornate, reminds me of the sawed-off shotgun I made for the television show Parks and Recreation. It sat on Ron Swanson's (Nick Offerman) desk for the entire series. I am very proud of that build.
Not Adam's finest work I must say, and it's in no way a criticism of his talent as a builder, but the whole thing felt really rushed. The 'gold' bits came out looking awful, the 'pearlescent' came out just looking blue, the lovely silver details with the rub and buff were ruined by the black paint, and it doesn't help that the guns' concept is completely nonsensical. (Having four parallel hammers but not four parallel barrels doesn't make sense.)

yeah, it came out looking more like a dollar store toy gun than some mystical weapon from an alternate universe. The SLA base material was a bad starting point, the hammers were entirely the wrong color,, and far too 2-dimensional. would have looked much better if he had painted the handle a different color, to give the illustion of multiple materials being used.
My glass house is starting to weaken from all these stones I'm throwing, but I respect Adam's talent, and I don't think he put 20% of it into this build. It really shows that this was a sponsored video and not a passion project.
Shogun, i had the same feelings. It felt like a rushed promotional piece.. it felt like "work". The results were visually not satisfying for me as well. But as a one day build, its just great to see a seasoned master at work and in this case Adam ;) ..I just wish he would restrain his impatience a bit more from time to time. It didnt help the "rushed feeling" of this video.
Totally agree. It feels like a tacked on "Oh, Adam, could you do this this afternoon?". We all know Adam could've done something exceptional and far more original if he'd been in a position to modify and bespoke.
With respect, I think the point of one day builds is to make something quickly, not to make the ultimate version of something. Adam has said many times about iteration being an important component of his design process. This way one can make something quickly, and see if the design choices work in the real world, and if its a prop that you would want to make a nicer version of.

AWESOME VIDEO ADAM . My friends Pop worked for Walt Disney Studios for Forty plus years as the head of the Props. Dept. He was a Master Carpenter, cabinet builder, carver and just a Master at anything to do with Wood working. He could take wood and make anything imaginable look as an exact replica. J.L.Y.

The gun in the movie is a real gun it is called the lancaster howdah gun

The British used the original howdah in colonial India as protection from tigers while riding elephants. It was a 20 gauge black powder shotgun typically loaded with one solid lead ball in one barrel and a load of buckshot in the other. I'm ashamed I know that

This is a massive longshot but what are the chances of getting access to the 3D objects/files for the hand-cannon? It's super awesome and this seasoned scale modeller would love to build something like this because it's so different to all my projects... I've been thinking of starting to print parts instead of scratch building them by hand for quite a while but often it's just quicker to make them from scratch rather than modelling them first - this being the one to contradict that statement ;)

The scroll saw's frequency with the frame rate is hypnotic.
I was expecting gold rub and buff for the triggers and hammers. Brassing them might have been a cool option too. And its amazing how much detail in the handle came out from the washes. The brass tube barrels were a nice touch too.
So excited! I read Mortal Engines over a decade ago and I've kept meaning to reread them. Can't wait to see the film!
