It actually surprised me every time to see how well the bottle mock-ups look compared to just seeing the logo. Just seeing each logo, I wasn't impressed by any, but seeing it in the context of the bottle design they look pretty good. I think these people are more package designers rather than logo designers lol

I think that the colors actually work nicely for the 2nd mockup! It yields to a "tropical" impression, and the brief did mention fruity flavors.
The first design did not strike me as "fruity" at all. Also, the first design looked extremely good! But it looked so much like a traditional rum, that I'd be mad that it was non-alcoholic. Lol

Dude seriously ? The second Logo is amazing, it is an handmade typo, and a unique illustration, the mockup just look so good by far! I admit that the pirate doesn't look enough "Pirate" to me and that is the only thing i would correct! but the typo is amazing ! I wouldn't charge less than $1500 for designing a logo like that! I guess it's always a matter of taste ! Great video my friend ! thanks a lot!

something I've learned of 12 years as a freelancer, it doesn't matter how much effort or uniqueness you out into it, you have to show what he's saying, following the briefs history and sell the client any logo you made by telling the story arround it, even if you just copy pasted some asset from X page and made it with a free font, the mockups and your selling will land you the client. And tbh his choice was spot on, the logo looks old like those made on that era + had anne in there, its all it needed

Agree! In my opinion that logo is my favorite. I am a beginner, but the diversity in that logo is my favorite. The last one is too “western” to me than pirate, the first one, skull is kind of been there done that boring to me.

Oh, it's tricky to pick one! The third one looks great but you can't even see all of it on the front of the bottle as it's wrapping around, which seems like a pretty big issue to me?
I do love that Thio used an actual illustration of Anne Bonny from a book about pirates written at the time; to me the image already looked familiar, which feels like it would be good with brand recognition.

  • @zapa1pnt

I much prefer the first design, the DejanG. It has the slick, classy, look of a fine liquor.
The other three are all stuck on the same idea which, actually, looks like it was done by a
talented high school student and not a professional marketing designer.

  • @spikeysnack
    @spikeysnack Год назад +4

Whilst I like all 3 designs, I feel the second one would sell better. I don't think people would buy the first one, it looks too much like hard liquor and a customer for non-alcoholic rum would be unbelieving that it really was. A bit too high-class and hits the stereotype of "pirate" too hard, looks like BS.
The second is very friendly and more marketable, but you are right about it looking a bit flashy and young. If the marketing was for the 20-30 year old non-alcoholic drink buyer I would go with that.
The third hits the happy medium of well-made but not overly pretentious, and I suspect that a non-alcholic rum customer would be very interested in the label information. I appreciated the upside down apostrophe as it was a nice bit of visual adventure but not a visual block or stop, and a nice little piece of roundness in the midst of all the angles and curves. It gives a kind of a promise of excitement inside. The pointing of the gun to the left is quite genius, somehow, as you read from left to right away from the unseen foe she is aiming at, it makes you feel like you are a compatriot and that perhaps she is protecting you, her crew. or something. I am not so much a fan of the upside down hook on the label, as it is a bit redundant. I realize they had to put something there, but perhaps an animal mascot or a vanilla flower.

I immediately thought of Blue Moon when I saw number 3, I know it is not identical but personably I think it’s too close.
I think there are better sub-conscience efforts in # 1. I immediately recognize “pirate” without really identifying why.
I also think the blue is so alluring because of the color of the ocean.
#2 is truly amazing but I would be concerned it is limiting your market since it is so feminine in appearance.
What is a prate’s favorite letter!
    “I” (aye) you say?
Nay you scallywag! It’s the “C”!!
Where does a pirate get his hook from?
    A second hand store!!

  • @wernerandreasli9165

no. 3 the letters are not balanced. Spacing is dissatisfying. Also should be a better solution for the apostrophy (like cutting the letter S). The illustration is heavily bouncing to the left side with a sleeve ... what is looking like "I have to fill space with something" For me no. 2 is the best, amazing work! After all: compliment to all three, actually i love all of them.

Hate when illustrations do not get reversed out properly. The last one was good but for god's sake fill that face in and knock the eyes, nose, etc out if you are going to put something drawn on white on a black substrate. Also, an eye patch on Bonny would have been a nice touch while remaining subtle/understated because nothing about the logotype or illustration is overtly pirate-ish.

I'm not sure if it was submitted or you did it for the thumbnail, but I prefer the inverted version of design #3! 😄 I think it works better with a lighter label and with the blue line-work - the contrast against the golden rum in the bottle would be 👌
I noticed none of the designs pushed the fact it was a spiced rum or utilised potential packaging elements to help tell the story i.e. a pouch or wooden box/cask to emulate 'discovering' Bonny's bounty.
Lastly, a small point, I loved design #2 (although I think #3 is probably the best fit) and thought that the blue section of the label may have benefitted from some wave pattern to accentuate the ocean theme.
All great designs though, well done to all 👏

#2 Alice’s design was the clear winner! She created her own font AND her own ORIGINAL illustration of Anne Bonny. #3 phoned it in by using a filter on an historic illustration. She had the best use of the bottle real estate and any complaint you had about the custom type face could easily be adjusted. She’s the only one you used “unreal” to describe, one of your favorite words I’ve noticed. I’ve also noticed that when people choose a rich orange instead of red you’re very critical. However, the teal blue/ rich orange combination is on point.
Alice understood the assignment! And as an employer I know I’d be getting my moneys worth with this artist.
    Well done, Alice!

I liked the second one much more. The lettering could have been toned down to be more legible. The Third does have an "established" look about it but the down-curve of the TY at the end of bounty doesn't align with the swirl underneath it and it really twitches my designer nerves. The angle of the swirl curve could be made to match the curve of the lettering above, but I still prefer No. 2.

    Apostrophes!
Logo 1 has the tick mark that is the default from the keyboard, and isn't part of the font, especially with the old-fashioned text. Just type in a comma on another line and place it where it belongs.
Logo 2 has a real apostrophe but it is upside down!
Fixing these would make the logos FAR more professional looking.

But in my opinion, the concept is kinda flawed.
I get that pirates and rum usually goes together. But trying to sell that image, just doesn't work with a non-alcoholic drink.
I would go in a way more modern route, for something like that. And probably a more simple design as well. Otherwise it could end up looking like they spent too much time and money on the bottle. (and not enough time on what's in it)

When you start the process a creative has to imagine the decision-maker taking the first look at any effort. Knowing how clients can react, I would guess that a client would say about number one and number two "I can't even read our name!" while the third design the name is very clear and crisp and in your face. But all of these designers so talented and so invested in their work.

  • @GrazieD

I love the second design. It's maybe a bit too sharp and could have been better if the crisp design was given an aged texture.
On the final design the designer should have used the original etching of Bonny instead of trying to recreate the effect. The original etching appears to be in the public domain so would have been usable.
    All great examples though.

The Designs are all great and each one gives a different vibe and gives off different associations which is perfect. Personally I have a bit of a problem with the bottle design itself. The hook might look interesting and nice on a mockup but in the real world it is going to be a pain in the you-know-what to produce, ship and store in warehouses or stores. I think the unusual bottle shape and the well designed label speak for themselves well enough to stand out without a gimmicky bottlecap.
