  • Here's part three of our Les Paul Shootout! This shootout is by no means a complete overview of what is available on the market. We are also just focusing on how the guitars sound and don't really go into details concerning hardware etc.

    What is sometimes over looked is you can get a basic nicely done body and neck from a not so horribly expensive model and upgrade the hardware. I got a rare LPM Les Paul w the maple neck, fat profile and extra thickness rosewood board, totally excellent work, cryo frets pleck and sustain just exceptional. Anyway refitted that guitar with vintage style solid cloth wire, orange drops, better pots, better switch with a set of Seymour Duncan (hot rodded set I believe) and man that guitar just kills for anything I want to play. To me well worth double the roughly $1000. Finish is translucent black with the maple top standard. Love it. I also got a 2018 $2500 honey burst, non weight relieved, HP with the smooth neck heal and the pickup push pull switching, nice chrome additions like the pickup rings and knobs. But I seriously could not understand a lot of the bad rap Gibson has been getting lately. Mine from 2016-2018ish have been the best guitars. Many in this video made my skin crawl ("that's what she said"..PH style joke) they were more costly and dreadful, workmanship terrible and some of the sounds were just god awful outside the lack of tuning and the mysterious mid neck note that is just atonally odd. My LPs have been jewels. That modified LPM is to die for! I like the modern HP improvements as well, many don't, I get that but you have to have more than one right kids? Pickup switching is novel but not something I use much or at all. The smooth neck heel, why have they not been doing this for decades?? Also I miss Ebony boards soooo much.

If you find yourself a registered Maybach Dealer you can custom order any finish color Maybach offers, any neck shape, nitro or poly lacquer, aged or new look...what ever the fuck you want. And now comes the Bomb: There‘s no premium to a custom order. You can go off menu for the same price as the series guitars. You just have to wait 2-3 months til it‘s build and delivered.

      @@grewejames1 I´ve played both Gibson and Maybach. GIbson is great, don´t get me wrong. But the Maybach easily outplays every Studio, Traditional, Classic, and Standard Les Paul by Gibson. They are directly competing with the custom shop models. You would have to get yourself a custom shop reisssue to really compare it to a Maybach Lester. And these are around twice the price of a Maybach. Let´s say I´m not willing to pay twice the amount of money just for a name.

    How much more money is tacked on to the Maybach just for the "aging" and "distressing"? How much cheaper would it be were it looking cherry? I don't want a brand new guitar that looks like it's from the 50s, nor do I necessarily want a 50s guitar that looks brand new, goddammit.

    • @flowryan5829

      You can order them in any configuration you want. New look nitro finish, new look polyurethane finish, aged, any neck profile you want, any finish color you want, any hardware color you want. No premium whatsoever. I hope that helps. You just have to find yourself a registered Maybach dealer.

  • @peterjessop1878
    @peterjessop1878 6 лет назад

    Maybach was the best LP type of this bunch. Would I buy it? No! I would just wait and keep trying Gibsons (probably secondhand but not a Les Paul Classic. The standards of the early 21st century are mostly awesome guitars) may take awhile though. The blue colour made the Knaggs look cheap and certainly not worth €2600. It also sounded thin compared to the Maybach, FGN and Gibson but given the body thickness this isn’t surprising, though string separation was good.(but not better than the Maybach on audio)

    • @flowryan5829
      @flowryan5829 3 года назад +1

      I had two Gibsons myself and played many, many more of them. They were nothing but disappointments. I haven‘t played single Maybach that wasn‘t a „holy grail“ guitar. Speaks for itself, I guess.

    I have a 2016 Standard and its amazing. But id love to have all of these as ive become obsessed with the Les Paul shape and general sound. Everything accept PRS would come home with me. Cant stand PRS guitars look or sound.
    Also that FGN sound like a LP Traditional. i love it

    this shootout started so promising and then gradually went worse with every video. this one wasn't even funny, entertaining and just barely informative. what were you guys doing off camera? are you high?

    The Maybach sounds great but I don't like the distressed/relic guitar thing honestly.

    Great effort and fun video..
    A couple of observations if i may. to my ear all of the guitars you tested almost sounded the same, few minor tonal differences here and there and im sure standing there in real life will notice the differences way more.....To hear clearly the differences in the video, you need to record with an ambient mic then mix that with the one on the cabinet..
    Another final observation is im sure you guys are professional reviewers on youtube etc... But please bring in an advance guitar player to properly play/test those guitars..
    Keep up he good work and i realy enjoy those Thomman walk thro videos..

    Quite an amateur test. Why would you buy the FGN or the Maybach over a Gibson as when you walk out the store they'd lose half of their cost. Gibsons retain some value. I tried a Maybach last year and it was great. Its just if you want to sell it, you'd get Epiphone money for it. They cost too much.

      If you buy a guitar thinking about its value when you walk out the store,you should do something else than music.

      Wil D. Of course you shouldn't be buying guitars for investment purposes (unless they're truly vintage and/or highly sought after) but anyone with any financial sense should STILL consider resale value regardless. Why risk losing $800 or so instead of say $400? (isn't that just common sense?) No different with cars, certain vehicles hold their value more so than others but of course you wouldn't buy a quickly depreciating car simply for an investment. Bottom line is you'd be foolish NOT to take resale into consideration. LarryUK is 100% correct.

      Wil D. Have you forgot that this is called the 'music business'? You have to use your head. Unless money is no object you have to think resale. Just like having a guitar built for you. You'd probably never be able to sell it. Plus, any guitar will play well with a good setup. I set them up myself. So I save money there. This whole video was pointless too as its all personal choice.

    I so wanted Gibson to sound the best. Unfortunately it didn't. Smoked by both the FGN and the Maybach. I know these shootouts are limited to guitars sold by Thomann and it is a very big pool to choose from. But one brand which isn't stocked by them and would give all the others a run for their money is Eastman.

    I know it's funny and all but seriously, a 37 minute video and almost 10 minutes spent tuning guitars!!! Very unprofessional IMO. It's as if they try to drag the video out as long as possible for some unknown reason. SMH First comparison video I made it 18 minutes in and not a note was played, so I left. Well done!

      why would you watch for 18 minutes and not fast forward? You DO understand that RUclips is nonlinear, right? There was even a message on screen with the time to jump to.
