I think there’s more pressure on kids to do everything. I know kids that don’t have ADD but take Adderral so they can stay up until 3:00am to finish a school project. Some kids don’t have a loving, supportive family or even a home to go to. All that stress and they don’t have the tools to deal with it. Many adults don’t have the tools to deal with stress in a healthy manner. Hence why many binge watch Netflix, drink, do drugs etc. They need tools to manage their stress and an outlet for their anger and anxiety. The world is a decidedly better place because of the Lt. Col. That said, I am glad that you pushed back on some of his inconsistent and in-congruent positions. How the Lt. Lt. Col Grossman is truly worth listening to. A presentation he gave several years back explained lack of sleep and its effects; it persuaded me that naps for less than 30 min are worthless (make it an hour or longer, or don't bother). He's got other interesting knowledge to offer.
@@Bredaxe Studied sleep briefly before dropping premed and experienced sleep loss in the military. I knew sleep loss affected mental function but Grossman's presentation highlighted the speed and severity of the effects of sleep loss and just how soon the body enters a nasty spiral as a result of sleep deprivation.

Andy, you exercised an extraordinary degree of patience which also highlights the respect you showed as a guest in his home though he was a guest on your podcast, That said, GOD DAMN. Hell, he must have felt the need to promote all his books he has written and the presidents he has briefed, but that tells me he has rarely been challenged on any of these "serious problems" and his ability to identify both problem and solution. It's obvious he hasn't been put in the any situation where people have questioned him. But the murder rate bull crap he tried to identify does not reflect our country in a dire situation. And apparently the rest of our problems are due to sleep deprivation. It was just sad to see him focus on these issues that he claimed the data shows, but no one has ewve heard of except himI applaud you brother. He was unable to address anything I experienced in 6 tours in Iraq but I am glad you respectfully challenged his intentionally spreading viruses theory and his effort to paint our future in a dreadful light. 4x4x4x4 Breathing has stuck with me every since I read that great book on the table. Is it 4x4x4 in the book? either way I read this book in my mid twenties and it changed my life. Very practical breathing technique that needs to be deeply ingrained in everybody's subconscious. Their was something else super powerful in that book. it had something to do with...Damn it's been like ten years.... It was something about impressing on your own subconscious how you will react when you are in that black zone. Something about I will never give up no matter what. that's not it. I'm rereading this great book.
There are a whole lot of comments here saying a lot of shit about Dave Grossman. I've read almost every book he's written and a few of them multiple times. I've heard him speak several times as well. Anybody saying he doesn't know what he's talking about or that he's fear-mongering hasn't had their eyes opened to the real world and what humans really are. "The genius always looks like a lunatic from the eyes of the fool."
The majority of the folks that are saying Grossman dosent know what he's talking about have actually killed people in combat. Grossman has never killed a human.
@@arighteousname5882 There are also huge numbers of people who have killed people in combat who agree with grossman. He's been a soldier and he's a scientist now, not a prophet. One might also accurately say that if you agree with the "majority" you would be wise to rethink your stance on more things than not.
@Erik Haraldsson his Stats used in is book are very skewd and or vague at best. Alot of the data he's collected for his book is also anecdotal hence why he's getting challenged by Andy. Alot of what's in his books reads like some chessey Soldier of fortune magazine. Many vets who have been in combat are critical of his books. That's my data sir.
@@arighteousname5882 That's a cool story. I'm not going to sit here and tell you I know more than you. I get what you're saying but I still disagree. I doubt you'll be disappointed when I say I'm just going to step away from it at that.
@Erik Haraldsson yeah that's what I thought. This podcast just proved it to be one of many reasons why Grossman is somewhat of a crack pot when it comes to writing about killing and combat. He may be a "scientist" on paper but he is not even a "researcher" in the academic sense whatsoever .
This was a difficult watch at times. I've seen this play plenty of times. You have someone who rises through the ranks due to being highly agreeable, then once they hit the senior leadership bracket they forget that their opinion=/=fact, and anecdotes=/=sources. You can tell the guy means well in his message, but I can't help but feel like his opinions are largely influenced by some stances better left on the other side of the millennium.
26:00. “ If 20 to 30 people slap on a tourniquet will cut murder in half in this country” Lt. C Grossman...... you don’t need to be scholar to see the bullshit in that statement ...that’s why Andy ask for the study or the data and all the retired colonel does is manipulate data to fit his narrative
@Cleared Hot Podcast Regarding drone operators and PTSD: There was a time where a drone operator had to be a member of Air Force Intelligence. (and could not smoke in the pod) Then the Air Force decided they didn't a AFI in every drone pod, and axed a s-load of the AFI drone operators, in favor for 1 AFI overseeing multiple pods of "vanilla" airmen Given the standards of mental prowess to get into Air Force Intelligence, they (read AFI) were better armored against PTSD. Had the Air Force not changed the requirements to be a drone operator, we would not have as many drone opearators experiencing PTSD, and the pods wouldn't smell like an old ashtray.
I don’t want to take a single thing away from The LT and I will not. How can someone who’s never actually been under that type of stress and has never taken a life, truly know and understand it? The stress of a super bowl seems very different to me then to be fighting for ones own very life. I’m curious in what people have to say about this. Not to be a comment of hate or of bashing, merely curiosity.
Lt Col Grossman spoke before my Battalion in 2005 before our Iraq deployment . Pretty interesting and intelligent person. However the best advise I ever received before that deployment came from a salty E-4 that had just returned which was " Don't get out of your truck". Much like CPT Willards advice, " Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right. Unless you were goin' all the way. Kurtz got off the boat. He split from the whole f***in' program."
Violent video games already, for the most part, are not available to minors. All games are rated by the ESRB and retailers don't sell M rated games to kids. It's not legally enforced, per se, but that doesn't mean it's the wild west out there.
Andy, absolutely love your podcast, and love every podcast you've been on. I was really disappointed to see Lt. Col Grossman on here, the very definition of "logical fallacy" in all varieties. I have had to deal with his video game blaming rhetoric for 20 years now, while the real issues causing bullying and violence in youth; are overlooked for hysteria and spectacle. Good job on holding the line, but hopefully you can avoid such individuals in the future.
But there have been studies that show the relation to violent video games/movies and violent crime. They cheapen human life and when someone is killed in a game there are no consequences and they begin to feel that way in real life.

Certainly some good info, butttt my boy Andy seemed like he wanted to hit the door. Much respect to the Lt. Col. but just wasn’t feeling this one. Keep going!
Andy, the 2020 Census claims a total population of 331,000,000 people. Your figure of 360 million was probably a guess before the Census results were released. I believe it’s more than 331 million but I don’t think they undercounted by 29 million.
Not to knock Lt. Col too much (I think his point about murders going down through medical intervention is really good. Something I certainly hadn't thought of before.)but, there are also 160 million more people in the country since 1970. This could also account for a significant increase in violent acts simply by having more people to potentially commit a violent act.
Other than his own books, I don't recall hearing the colonel giving more than one or two vague sources for his data. You got the goods, share them so interested people can look it up. The sources and purposes of the studies are important, and I would like to look into this further.
Off topic. What happened with Chris Kyle and Jesse Ventura? Is that something that the seal community thought was something, or is it just 2 guys that hated each other?
I maybe reading into this a little deep but looking at Andy’s body language and his reactions to the Lt. Col. speaking, he appears uncomfortable. Andy’s is keeping and open mind but I feel he disagrees with most statements made. Past practice to judge future predications, agree 100% but what lens you look at the world makes up how that view is judge.
That's because Andy has been in combat and taken lives. He knows when people are bullshiting like Grossman is. I sure the Col. Means well but he's way off in his booner logic.
Interesting perspective and I appreciate you not making your podcast an echo chamber by bringing in other views that may not align with the circles you normally run in. I do wonder akin to his argument on medical technology suppressing the "actual murder rate" if we would have as many violent acts with people understanding that those acts would/could have a more severe consequence. So to flip it has medical technology increased our propensity to violence because we "assume" the victim can just go to the doctor and get sorted out, no big deal.
This guys numbers are off. He is either misunderstanding them or misrepresenting them. The murder RATE is not up, raw numbers are. Raw numbers will always go up. Its directly relational to population growth. He is an odd duck. He makes many mistakes that anti gun people make when talking statistics but he tries to come to a different conclusion with the same mistakes than the anti gun people do.
Dude, not a myth, everyone of the shooters were on psychotropic drugs, there are areas where I will never trust psychologists or psychiatrists. Drug junkies. Dad gave me a .22 rifle when I was 11. NRA class, Boy Scouts and gun safety classes and lots of camping and some range time. No psychiatric drugs.
Andy I gotta give you props on this...keeping your cool. Every time you start to make a point he cuts you off and dont let you finish. I found myself telling this guy(out loud) " let him Finnish!! This dude would be ok if he would realise others my have a different point of view than him...when someone may go to a different POV he interrupts and goes back to his POV.
Interesting, I never seen that side of Grossman…when he is pressed on the studies he seems to get a little defensive and grandiose as to say, “I am an expert listen to me because I am the expert.” Very interesting.
Ok... you mentioned this in a FDF episode as being a difficult podcast for you to get through. I'm like 5 mins in and this guy said the stress of playing a sport (making millions) is equal to the stress of combat. I've never been to combat but I've played plenty of sports (and at the time the most important games of my life)... I'd venture to guess that the butterflies before the game started (the ones that go away and it turns into excitement, laughs and smiles) are NOT the same as if I were going into combat. Just a guess. That statement was laughable.
Only Podcast you’ve done I gave up on Andy. Negative fear mongering throughout. While there has been a spike in violent crime based mostly in the cities, crime as a whole is drastically declined since about 1980. This is a fearful man in search of statistics that back up his fear. He is an example of the negative/positive ratio of news that you talk about frequently. Much like many of the older generation (to include my parents somewhat), Fox News (and many others) pump out a relentless stream of sensationalist fear based “news” every day all day. Walk outside and chat with your neighbors, things are ok.
I heavily disagree with his stance on videogames amongst many other points. Somewhat interesting guest, but I had a hard time going through this podcast? I don't believe he is basing his opinions on facts.

If abortion is murder, then miscarriages should require a medical examiner and a police investigation. What was _the cause of death?_ Was it _wrongful?_ Was it an abortion _disguised as a miscarriage?_ Or, even, was it _self-inflicted?_
We need those investigations. I suspect that _fetal suicide_ is far more common than anyone realizes. American taxpayers should _fund a study._ Put our money where our mouth is. Obviously, we have a _duty to God_ to set up a taxpayer-funded program --- for prenatal psychiatric care. Let's get those _fetuses_ the _psychiatric help_ they need!

I shall miss those pork chops. I'm already struggling to find fresh _baby back ribs_ at my favorite... um... "pizza" restaurant.

2. Prohibits mixing meat and diary

Please note this comment comes from a person who has read and re-read the Lt. Col.'s books, attended his lectures, and listened/watched many of his interviews. The world is a decidedly better place because of the Lt. Col. That said, I am glad that you pushed back on some of his inconsistent and in-congruent positions. How the Lt. Col. does not see that there is a logical problem with advocating self-reliance (Second Amendment issues) and the "Nanny State" (government control over the video game industry) is disappointing.
Not every interview is about eating sand. This is two generations communicating. However...if I had to spend time listening to this woo woo in heaven, I know where I’d rather be.
Saw him speak when he visited our base in Twentynine Palms circa '06 or '07. Got both "On Killing" and "On Combat."
That was '07. My unit was going through Mojave Viper at the time and went to see him speak at the theater.
Lt. Col Grossman is truly worth listening to. A presentation he gave several years back explained lack of sleep and its effects; it persuaded me that naps for less than 30 min are worthless (make it an hour or longer, or don't bother). He's got other interesting knowledge to offer.
Worked in sleep medicine for years and the effects of sleep deprivation are devastating to the body.
@@censorshipbites7545 Also the physical effects. Thinks like weight gain, heart disease and strokes. 70% of all people who have had a stroke have also been diagnosed with sleep issues like sleep apnea, that was left untreated. I'd love to get time with the Lt. and discuss sleep.
i appreciate your honest interaction with Lt. Col Grossman keep it up
Andy, you exercised an extraordinary degree of patience which also highlights the respect you showed as a guest in his home though he was a guest on your podcast, That said, GOD DAMN. This man knows better, or should. Kudos to you Andy, now more Tactical A__hole episodes :)
1:40:45 What' your savings account look like? ... damn that got to me! I knew the podcase would be worth listening to. Thanks Andy!!!!
Kudos to Andy's interviewing skills on this one, I would have been pretty frustrated after the 3rd "golly gee book sold 500000 copies" when asked where he was getting his statistics from.
Some good points were made though, sleep especially.
Lmao at the fact you use the word “kudos” are you a female boomer middle school teacher? You’re certainly a fucking dork that’s for sure.
Great interview!
Lets add at 40 mins, that alcohol also disrupts sleep as well which contributes further to sleep loss.
Love this podcast! I wouldn’t be able to push myself to the limits if it weren’t for these podcasts.
2:22:01 Freud would have a field day with this convo 😂
I remember reading on killing before joining the army, but the colonel has gone full boomer
Ive liked Grossman for a long fucking time. Like the deep psychology behind him.
One of your best Andy! This podcast with LtCol. Grossman is full of great information!
Lunatic pseudoscientist who hasn't been right on one damn thing
I consume copious amounts of caffeine and don't sleep all that much. I'm in the best place personally and professionally I've ever been.
Dude are you still haunted by your encounter with Hannibal Lector?
Damn this guy does a lot of correlation and tries to make it look like causation without any further exploration.
When will the podcast with Mike Glover come out? Great episode none the less awesomesauce man.
59:30, sipping on a bang as I listen 😂
Is there an explanation on the intro? Would love to hear the story behind that.
This guy sounds EXACTLY like Ted Nugent.
This is absolutely awesome!

Very practical breathing technique that needs to be deeply ingrained in everybody's subconscious. It was something about impressing on your own subconscious how you will react when you are in that black zone. Something about I will never give up no matter what. that's not it. @@eivoilaittaaverotukseen6426 did you ever get an Answer to your question?
I listened to this while playing modern warfare and not killing people in real life.
Science is a jagged guide not a flawless manual. Produce the data to counter his and we'll talk about the validity of your material. Until then, it doesn't much matter what you're saying.
This guy is a bit of a fear monger ... glad Andy is checking him
Grossman is way overrated. This is what it looks like when an actual combat vet challenges a theoretical warrior.
@Cleared Hot Podcast
Regarding drone operators and PTSD:
There was a time where a drone operator had to be a member of Air Force Intelligence. (and could not smoke in the pod) Then the Air Force decided they didn't a AFI in every drone pod, and axed a s-load of the AFI drone operators, in favor for 1 AFI overseeing multiple pods of "vanilla" airmen
Given the standards of mental prowess to get into Air Force Intelligence, they (read AFI) were better armored against PTSD.
@@jacobwynn9555 If you have parents that teach you right from wrong and that its just that a game and not real life...then your children don't grow up being killers because of games.
@@jacobwynn9555 If you are going to cite studies, link them. Plenty of studies show all kinds of correlations that aren't informative.
@@jacobwynn9555 Everybody plays video games now, or has. So how do you show a rise in violent crime from video games, when violent crime as a whole has been steadily declining?
@@jacobwynn9555 Those studies exist solely to paint violent games/movies as an easy scapegoat in the wake of tragedy, for every single one of those "studies" you can find dozens of others that refute them with ease.

Certainly some good info, butttt my boy Andy seemed like he wanted to hit the door. Much respect to the Lt. Col. but just wasn’t feeling this one. Keep going!
That's cuz Andy smelled the bullshit.

The crimerates are almost allways per capita.
Read the first book. He discusses how population density plays into murder rates. More people equals more density.
This is in 480p. Really.?
@Maryland_Patriot410 If I am watching it, it is.

Great interview I came out of this with many things to read and investigate. Thank you
Other than his own books, I don't recall hearing the colonel giving more than one or two vague sources for his data. You got the goods, share them so interested people can look it up. The sources and purposes of the studies are important, and I would like to look into this further.
Off topic. What happened with Chris Kyle and Jesse Ventura? Is that something that the seal community thought was something, or is it just 2 guys that hated each other?
@Es1911sumware SEAL JP Dinnell testified that he saw Kyle punch Ventura.
Cleared Hot to release Glover episode :)))
For a radio show, Grossman sure came prepared with show and tell graphics and copies of his books for sale. LOL 😆
There's a chance this guy thinks folks don't get enough sleep
Interesting perspective and I appreciate you not making your podcast an echo chamber by bringing in other views that may not align with the circles you normally run in.
I do wonder akin to his argument on medical technology suppressing the "actual murder rate" if we would have as many violent acts with people understanding that those acts would/could have a more severe consequence. So to flip it has medical technology increased our propensity to violence because we "assume" the victim can just go to the doctor and get sorted out, no big deal.
Andy has never lost a game of bullshit
This guys numbers are off. He is either misunderstanding them or misrepresenting them. The murder RATE is not up, raw numbers are. Raw numbers will always go up. Its directly relational to population growth. He is an odd duck. He makes many mistakes that anti gun people make when talking statistics but he tries to come to a different conclusion with the same mistakes than the anti gun people do.
Gosh golly! I didn't realize you could contract PTSD
Hopefully I don't contract fecal matter
Dude, not a myth, everyone of the shooters were on psychotropic drugs, there are areas where I will never trust psychologists or psychiatrists. Drug junkies. Dad gave me a .22 rifle when I was 11. Interesting, I never seen that side of Grossman…when he is pressed on the studies he seems to get a little defensive and grandiose as to say, “I am an expert listen to me because I am the expert.” Very interesting.

Yes!!! Well done sir!!!
If this guy offers you Kool-Aid don't drink it. See you next week. This guy's not worth my time.
Andy does a great job of respectfully pushing back.
Ok... you mentioned this in a FDF episode as being a difficult podcast for you to get through.
Grossman I think I may still have his book though it's full of misinformation based on the Marshall studies
Just put this one down to experience and move on Andy. I assumed he wouldn't have been as crazy as well, based on his books at least.
Uncommon Intensity is not equivalent to insanity.
Wow, there is a khukuri on the wall.
Had interactions with Grossman many many years ago when his books started coming out. Same old sheot. Censorship and bullshit.
