I remember Judge Mathis used to talk about how when he moved to LA he was shocked to find out how majority of black actors are struggling. There's only a few like Denzel and Sam Jackson that are rich or doing well who get regular work.

Terrance is very intelligent i watched his oxford lecture and i was surprised and it was a good lecture on the infite flower thing
Hustle & Flow was a low-budget indie production outside of SAG-AFTRA which otherwise mandates a minimum scale pay for actors which is like $50-60k. The problem is Howard signed up for the film, got paid his relatively nothing fee to do it, and signed a contract with no back end of the gross or profits which was his fault if true. He should've tried to negotiate a producer role to get a cut of that or otherwise mandated points in his contract since I'd rather take that than any acting fee if I really believed in the film and role. That's why it's dire to hold onto a piece of something that could make a ton of money on the back end than take a one-time cash payment up front. It's still messed up but it is what it is.
I was thinking the same thing. Why not ask for a percentage of ALL profits. Ticket sales, dvd, and Blu Ray this movie did make money. Who is negotiating these horrible contracts?
To be fair, he ended up doing Iron Man because of the work that precedes that film.

@@williemo44 Exactly. That's why actors will happily take scale psy or almost nothing if it's a prestige role for a promising movie and/or made by a prestigious filmmaker. You forgo the money, you take the role, and if it hits with the award circuit and critics, you boost your brand as an actor a million fold. Obviously, Howard seemingly had that attitude, it worked extremely well, and be became A-list.... aside from his tremendous career missteps after the fact. I mean yeah, it sucks he only got $12k for a role in a movie that grossed a shit ton of money, but he took the role knowing he wasn't getting a piece of the back end because a lot of producers don't offer that unless you have all the leverage.
@@jasminemonroe5784 Because actors don't have that leverage, if the role is competitive for whatever reason, and producers will tell you to kick rocks to find someone hungry enough to take it for a (relatively) nothing fee. Actors do it if the role and filmmaker prestige will inevitably illustrate their acting chops and further their career in the long-run.
For a good while, De Niro wouldn't take roles in the latter 2000's to whenever unless he got a producer role, because he wanted the big slice of money to fund his Tribeca venture. Thus why he had a run of mediocre to bad movies for lesser films he'd get that cut. He lost out on decent roles in decent flicks because producers at any level will balk at someone, even a living legend like De Niro, for demanding a producer credit so they can take a huge slice of back end for themselves because they're acting in it when he was already being paid for acting and did nothing to do with producing work.

So 12k, or 1.2k. Also, it says the film took 19 days to film in total. So, though that seemingly is very low pay for an actor who had already been established, it was a low budget, non-SAG, indie film and didn’t take 3, 4, 5 months + to film like a major production.12k in 2005 is like 19k today. Still pretty good for less than 3 weeks of work regardless. He was also involved in a ton of other projects around that time like Crash, Ray, The Salon, Four Brothers, Animal, Get Rich or Die Trying, so I’m sure he figured why not since it wasn’t a big time commitment.

Interesting point in both Hip Hop and Acting in contracts actors and hip hop artist think of the front end maybe the back end but what about royalty and residual if the studio network and industry don't wanna pay I guess they'll treat the individual as a replacement meaning you can be replaced at any time and technically anybody on set or with a label who doesn't push there music can get dropped similar to a movie or a album if It sells tickets and units it's a block buster deal it only does good if it can sell
