Every time I see someone in the wild with a smart watch (I take the train to work and MOST people with a watch wear them!), I just think to myself "you have to charge this thing every other day.... and it'll die in 5 years"... I really don't get people. It's like they've forgotten what a real watch is !

I do like small watches, and maybe the Speedy isn't as much of an all rounder (walking outdoors, tight work cuffs, rainy Scottish weather sometimes)... what would you do guy ? If you don't mind me asking... I love the look of the Speedy. And when I took photos of it on my professional camera, it just looks stunning... makes me regret deciding to sell... it just feels bulky on my wrist and it gets caught on my jackets and so on.... I just worry I'll regret it, especially because I bought a few months ago at an amazing 20% discount....

Some of it is heart over head - old technology being retro and romantic and others are genuinely practical - I like having a watch that you never have to charge, especially one that you can hand wind. Its brilliant... the fact that there are hundreds of parts inside, it is powered by you, not electricity, and it won't need to be replaced for... well... maybe your whole life! And you can have that connection - to wear the same watch for 50 years... that's pretty cool come on

The obsolescence factor is what caused me to get back into real watches. I use an iPhone up to the point where it just doesn’t work and I can get a good four years usually, my MacBook Pro is a 2015 model that runs just as good as it did on the day I bought it, my Apple Watch though started chocking up after about 18 months and finally died due to a swollen battery.
While the apps are very convenient, it’s still not good enough to replace my phone that does the same things better.

A traditional wristwatch, whether it’s mechanical or quartz, is a lot more gratifying and peace-bringing. Thanks for expressing this idea so clearly for all of us who agree!

After owning a couple of smart watches over the years, there is usually a traditional watch on my wrist but sometimes a smart watch on my other wrist. Very well put Guy, traditional watches do not have that same built in obsolescence as a smart watch. I do wonder how many Apple watch owners upgrade from an older one given not only support is stopped for older versions but that battery will be fatigued significantly and may no longer available to replace for less than the cost of a new watch. I'll certainly be wearing a traditional watch on my wrist (including G-Shocks) for the foreseeable future. The little beating hearts of the mechanical watches just has that connection with me that a smart watch does not do as well.

I don’t look at an Apple Watch as a replacement for a mechanical watch, but as a tool that serves different purposes. The Swiss luxury watch companies have nothing to worry about from the Apple Watch, in fact they should be thankful that Apple helped reinvigorate the practice of wearing a tool on your wrist. There are a lot of millennial watch enthusiasts out there who wouldn’t be into the hobby if not for the Apple Watch. The paradox is that the more versatile and multipurpose an item is, the shorter its lifespan usually is. Think AirPods Pro vs Sennheiser HD650.

Never owned an Apple watch though I am using an iPhone. Main reason was the price; Second would be the charging. It is an awesome toy and I am a pretty active person. I see the Apple Watch more of a fitness/lifestyle complex product and the mechanical watches as more of a luxury item. To be honest, if we need to know the time, we have phones/monitors etc.

I have an Apple Watch. I use for yard work or cleaning the house to control my music and keep my other watches nice. It almost a beater watch because it will be obsolete in a few years. I dislike charging the battery every day so a traditional time piece is on my wrist. I’ll put up my Apple Watch only when I need it to control my music. I won’t upgrade unless my Apple Watch breaks. I love mechanical watches. It more of a feeling. It is the sweeping hand. I also won’t use a mechanical watch if I didn’t have time available with tech to adjust my mechanical watch. I will use a digital quartz for sure if I don’t have time available everywhere. I need to be on time.

For me, I got out of (admittedly non-luxury) wrist watches in the 90s when I figured I could get the time more accurately from my whizzy new mobile phone. A couple of decades later I signed up for an exercise challenge which came with a pedometer. That led to an Apple watch, which (turning full circle) re-introduced me to the benefit of being able to discretely tell the time on my wrist (who knew). As you might have guessed, this started me thinking about mechanical watches again...
Anyway, long story short, I still have the Apple Watch, but now it's only used as a fitness tracker when actively exercising, the rest of the time it's my new Speedy that occupies my wrist.

Nice vid. I found a few of things I haven’t liked with smart watches (tried a few including Apple watch). One is they sort of suck outside in the sunlight. Another, is over time it gets annoying charging them and the batteries degrade, Also, it’s too connected the phone, sometimes want a break. Finally, you just can’t make them look good. The one thing I miss a bit is sports tracking, HR, strava.

But it just isnt. The Apple Watch is a wonderous thing but its a piece of tech. Tech gadgets all share one thing and that is built in obsolescence.
In a years time there will be an updated version but unlike with a mechanical or premium brand quartz the new one will trump your one. Give it five years and nobody...even you...will want your Apple watch.
I cant guarentee much; but I bet there will be no grandchildren inheriting present day young people's Apple Watches.

I believe that in the last decade the overall public is underestimating, being not aware enough, the importance to simply tell the current time relatively accurately and reliably. Even in the last year, couple of people approached me on the street in the evening, asking me what is the current time, because their phone battery died. Also couple of people asked me for an advice which watch to buy, because for their work they need a time piece on their wrist, so they do not have to reach for their phone.
For this you only need a mechanical watch which you can power by the movement of your wrist. You are not dependent on any external power supply, and operating a mechanical watch is simple, you just need to raise your wrist and look at it (also it usually has a date complication). But if you wear a smartwatch, usually you need to press the button to turn the screen on or you need to wait for the smartwatch to realize automatically that you are looking at it. This operation is quite annoying and it kills the purpose of having always available time reading on your wrist. Also, if you need to think about it how to charge up your watch, then it becomes a drop that spills over the already full glass. In general, as the device is technically more simpler, it becomes more practical to use, it is more reliable, and it has longer life time.
