mvdp was riding as a domestique in the tour (where he still lead jasper to several stage wins and also FINISHED THE TOUR), vs at the Worlds where he was riding for the win. not sure why minds are blown that his performance was better at Worlds. he's been the best single-day road racer around for a minute

I feel this podcast lacks the romanticism for cycling that the Lantern Rouge podcast oozes...This is more about stats and figures and prices... I think you are right.. im not surprised, mainly because i feel he was taking it extra easy at the tour, got good lower effort mileage in, then had rest up times got back to 100% and smashed a 1 day race.. Pogi and Wout coming 2nd and 3rd after their TDF performances was probably more impressive, the fatigue these guys built up over the 3 weeks must be incredible and they nearly were able to keep up with MVDP so his performance was human in nature, considering he was lower efforts and had more chill days. Now lets talk about Jonas putting in 1min 40 on EVERYONE in the tour, that is not natural, even Wout said "he was the best of the "NORMAL" guys after the stage.

The last week of the Tour MVDP was just taking it easy with the WC in his mind because the lay-out in Scotland was perfect for him. He approached the last part of the Tour more as a training and doing intervals, riding from one backmarker group to the other. Besides, the big mountains in the Tour aren't really suited voor him. And like you said he was sick during part of the Tour.

And was in breaks that clearly weren't suited to him (all his breaks on days with some big mountains) which backs up the narrative he was just training for this while at the tour (while obviously helping the team win stages). Don't take this as "these prices are ok" but I don't see why not. I know the brand of cannondale meant amazing price / performance years ago. But nowadays you look at bikes, there's hardly any difference. So if brand A is charging it, why not brand B.
They are not like porsches vs hondas anymore. The customer differential there is very apparent. But not Specialized top bike vs Cannondale top bike. The differences are just not there anymore.
Having said that you could chop every bike's price in half and that would still be expensive.

Re: financing bikes. Your note about the financially connected is pretty accurate. I (and the people I ride with) can afford an S-Works SL8 cash, but may have to pull money out of investments and pay capital gains taxes. I could put it on a credit card but would have to repay it quickly because I never carry credit card balance. And even though interest rates are now 5%+, the US tech companies like Klarna that offer financing on bikes are still giving 0% interest loans. They're hoping people will over commit and miss payments and owe thousands in fees. But even for people with the cash, a 0% interest installment plan is an obvious choice.

Was looking for a comment like this I had the cash sitting to buy my new bike but was basically able to buy all of it through zero interest purchase tools. If used properly and not taking on too much leverage in some cases it actually makes more sense to finance. I.e you buy a 10k bike on zero percent interest or 1/2% if your getting 3/4 % on cash deposited in the bank it makes sense to keep it there

About Van Der Poel, I thought he did well to conserve energy the whole race. He made one or two attacks, but he was nowhere near as active as Pogačar for example, who attacked a bunch of times, got caught out and had to close the gap on multiple occasions, and had less help from teammates. Wout also exchanged a couple of attacks with the rest of Belgium team, and was overall more active. Not to mention, in crit style races, someone that is technically sound can conserve so much more energy by not surging. After the winning attack from VDP, he was also able to ride hard in his own pace, and the trio behind was surgingm attacking eachother and was at that point psychologically beaten.
If we're talking about doping, or just incredible level of these riders, I think all four-five that were in the mix should be questioned equally or not at all.

I think Chris's point about how people get influenced to buy one bike or another is a good one. On a long group ride, tech/bike chat is inevitable, and everyone wants to know the opinions of the fastest people in the group because it's assumed they know what they're talking about, and at least in my experience they mostly ride pretty nice bikes. If you see those bikes week after week ridden by guys who are faster than you, it's only natural that you'd start to associate that bike with a higher level of performance. I think in a way that's even potentially more likely to influence someone than a pro's bike would. Because while you can easily dismiss a pro on a particular bike because they're paid to ride it, the fast guy in your group ride could have had anything and chose an SL8, or an S5, etc.
The same kind of chat happens with training. No one asks the slow guy what kind of plan he's on. You want advice from and you want to emulate the people who are faster than you.

Strava needs Seasons, every 3 months or whatever there is a reset for the current season and that's the main leaderboard. Keep the all time leaderboard available and in the background but its not the main thing. This way every few months (or year) there is a race to set the fastest times on the popular segments. Then give people virtual trophies or something for having the top time on a segment in each season, maybe even create special trophies for the most popular/iconic segments for every region. I think this would make strava way more engaging rather than it being a "look what I did" social network.

MVDP has almost been unbeatable on a great day throughout his whole career. Especially on punchy climbs. Even against the world elite. Look at Milan San Remo this year, but also Strade 2021, Tirenno 2021, Ronde almost every year. Before that he did the same (maybe on a lower tier, but still) in races like Tour of GB 2019, Arctic race of Norway 2018, winning the Dutch NC 2018. His back problems did throw a spanner in the works, but that seems to be less of a problem. That said I'm really surprised by the tone of the discussion. How does this dominant win on this circuit come as a surprise?

I have S-Works bikes; an Epic, an Aethos and a CruX. I built them from frames I bought, and saved a bit on the custom pack of components so they'd be my own projects. I had the money saved up and paid cash for the biggest chunks which kept the balance of the purchase off of my credit cards as I didn't want the interest penalties.
as to WHY, well it's simple. I raced bikes for nearly 30 years, and spent the first two decades either on junk bin builds or whatever I could scrounge out of regional team or sponsorship deals. It was always basic or midrange workman tier stuff that I could afford to crash at the weekend crit and replace if something got broken.
Now that I'm over 50 with a very well paid corporate job and disposable income, I'm buying the stuff that I always dreamed about having when I was a Cat 2 scrounging for rides. I ride the HELL out of my bikes, take immaculate care of them, and tend to turn them over / trade them in every couple years just so that I can get decent value back from our local pro consignment shop towards my next high end build. I don't race anymore but I do ride a lot and there is nothing like having a "dream bike" underneath you, it's inspiring. I love working on, looking at, and riding all of my "dentist bikes" and they inspire me to pile on the miles now that I don't have to kill myself with interval sets.

I guess mvdp took the tour as build phase for the wc. In addition, when you followed his cx races/wins the last years, the wc race had the same playbook as many of those cx races. He rides conservatively, checks the course and competitors, throws in some watt bombs and after he has finished making his gameplan, where to attack and in which parts of the course he can play out his skills and/or power, he attacks and flies away.

mvdp famously trains really hard when targetting a goal. I think his main goal for July/August was a stage win at the tour and worlds. In the past he has over trained which may have been the cause of him getting ill in the tour which then meant he took his foot of the gas there, to then focus on the worlds. I am sure he would have loved to have won a stage at the tour, and maybe he could have even though he wasn't 100%, but he was happy to sacrifice that to give himself the best shot at the Worlds.
If you look at the rest of the guys in the top 4 at worlds, WVA did a lot of work at the tour to try and get a stage win and to help Jonas in gc, Pog obviously came 2nd and Pedersen again was doing a lot at the tour to get a stage win and to help Ciccone with the KOM jersey. Taking all that into account mvdp probably had the best recovery and preparation going into the worlds, regardless of his illness, compared to the others,. If you then add his technical ability, his willingness to lose the race and force others to chase, and his physiology to attack on those short climbs I do not think his performance at worlds is that surprising.

Mvdp’s peaks are crazy and that might have a bit to do with the fact he doesn’t have to flog himself in the mountains for a teammate or deal with a newborn or the Belgian pressure cooker like Wout does.

Thx for skinsuit guys - quick delivery to the UK - privileged to own a 'limited edition' ;-) By comparison our club's race kit window (with Kalas) just opened - skinsuit prices range from ~£130 (no aero claims - yours was cheaper!) to ~£350 RR/~£450 TT (aero tested by Vorteq). (We have access to Nopinz as well.)

Another good show boys. For Strava I wish there was a way to separate out single riders from those riding in a group. There are a number of unattainable KOMs near me due to obvious lead out situations. It would also be interesting to see a "normalized" leaderboard that adjusted times to a static, no wind, 70deg F day (nothing official, just out of curiosity).

MVDP - Just incredible to watch i was proper on the edge of my seat. Great call on the TT by the way!
Strava - torn - part of me says leave it not everyone can be a KOM etc. Other part says they need to do something to set real world challenges. Like the "local Legend" but with segment times?
    So you get:-
    1). KOM / QOM
    2). Time Legend (30-90 days)
    3). Local Legend
With the various other topics in this show - are hobby cyclists just getting too carried away and the brands beginning to take the mickey due to this? Prices of bikes and god forbid financing them / skinsuits etc for iddy biddy teeny gains - everyone on waxed chains and aero gear, chugging on Ketones - when in reality they just need to ride more consistently and eat normal food and enjoy being on a bike in 90% of cases (myself included) - i'd be better off losing 5kg than wearing aero socks......lol.
Talking of food - this fuelling like the pro's thing - 100g carbs an hour - is this really nessesary for a club ride? Not riding anywhere near a pro level so why bung in that amount of fuel?
Did you see the triathlete video who basically claimed he gave himself diabetes due to his massive carb rich diet (albeit it looked pretty junk food based).

Wrt finance this is something I was surprised with also when chatting to people. It’s crazy. I can afford any of those bikes and have plenty of cash but just bought a 2018 TCR SL DA for 3k over the bikes you had on the list - mainly because its lighter and its not easy to get stock - i did try.
I dint buy the “investment” option for the finance and basically it hardly ever works out. Anyone who really has cash isnt worried about 20k in that bracket its not that much when you are in that level tbh

Totally agree about the Garmin climb in Australia, it's absolutely rubbish here in the Dandenong Ranges, Melbourne. Easily the most popular climbs in the city and it's woefully inaccurate for me. Alerts telling me I've finished the climb 50m-100m before I reach the top and the very distinct or the most popular climbs are inaccurately mapped (climbs continuing long after you've passed the official finishing point). Have turned it off until it's actually accurate.

In the UK you can buy a bike through your employer in a scheme called 'Cycle to Work', where for a top taxpayer they get get up to 42% off the price of a bike. So many people buy top end bikes using this scheme, which your employer will allow. Most people will get 25% off.
This has probably factored into bike prices, the follow-on effect is that we have lots of top end bikes in the secondhand market.

In 1990s, a near top spec pro level bike cost just a couple of months wages for a very normal job and cost of living, especially cost of a roof over your family's head was a lot less in relation to incomes. Prices here are a different language from anything I know. Exotic bikes for racing require spares, cost of replacing a broken wheel, and one or two other bikes for day-to-day use. If these exotic bike make a significant difference for anyone except the top riders, then we should have races with bikes separated by classification, like all the different types of motor racing. Which would be crazy

I think part of the issue with financing a bike is that the interest rates are so high. A car loan is in the single digits while Afterpay/Affirm are generally double digits and often double the rate. The monthly payment on a USD 9500 bike over 36 months is about the same as my payment on a minivan. There ought to be better financing options, but it's hard to find a reasonable collateral for that type of loan.

    RE: American Road Racing Dying
It really depends on the region, and the race. Some races get cancelled due to lack of reg numbers, or logistics ($$$ permits and $$$ lic). Some race barely scrape by with just enough reg numbers, and others, like crits, or bay area central RR have more numbers (Patterson Pass, Berkeley Hills, Pescadero...). Even the number of riders in fields are all over the place. Sometimes P12, and E3s are huge fields, and masters are small, and then other times it is the opposite. Compared to the numbers 8 years ago, it would seem RR is dying here, and since covid reg numbers have struggled, however it would seem this year, its coming back; albeit inconsistently.
Valley of the Sun in Arizona (stage race) had a ton of riders. Baker City in Oregon, also had a good showing, and was a super fun stage race. I don't race a lot, but I have 13 races so far, and a few more to go, before I kick off CX season in October.

Maybe MVDP is just a big event kind of guy, which is not that unusual in sports. Canadian sprinter Andre Degrasse is nowhere during the season, but routinely gets in the medals at the Olympics and World Champs. Part mental and part physiological -- some athletes taper very well. I used to be like that when I was swimmer in my youth -- swam like crap in-season but with a bit of well timed rest my performance improved a lot! Also, this world's course was unlike anything in the TdF -- sprint, coast, sprint, coast... That's basically what MVDP is good at.

When you do 270 km, saving energy on such a demanding course is key. That goes for all the big one-day races like LBL, Milan San Remo, etc. So, to me, it was not a surprise what he did, just enjoyed it.

On the financing of the new bikes, certainly that happens and certainly there are a percentage of people doing it where that is a poor financial decision. It would seem reasonable to also assume that beyond those going the financing route, there are those that are maxing out a credit card to purchase the bike, who financially should not be making that decision. My guess would be that the percentage of buyers doing that is likely as big (or bigger) than the financing route.
