In January, I had myself made 21 dreadlocks and I loved it but in March, I found that since I only had 21 of them, they were way to thick and kinda ugly so I took them all of and remade them by myself, this process started the 9th of March and ended last week end but I'm proud of my 65 dreadlocks, I love them so much!
I'm 2 weeks in and they are so FUZZY. Lots of loose hairs coming out of the dreads. I sat 14 hrs for back combing and added real hair extensions. I love them and cannot wait to see the progress. Love the video, thanks for sharing!!
I recently shaved / chopped off my dreadlocks after about 3-4 years.. same experience realized that short hair isn't 'me'... looking into extensions at the moment to get my length and dreads back. thank you for the content
OMG!! The same thing happened to me, exactly like you. I combed out my dreads few months ago, I didn't like it, I shaved my hair. My hair is 5 cm at the moment, a few days ago I bought human hair, I can't wait for them to arrive from LA (I'm in London). I'll be making them myself, and somebody else will attach them for me. I was surprised that I'm not the only one with this crazy journey. I miss them so much, my whole family is angry with me that I got rid off them lol. They are very pleased that dreads are coming back soon 😊😊. Ps. I'm also white. Thanks for sharing the story, my husband is not so mad at me anymore knowing that someone else did it also 😅.
@@respectfullymama I did!!! It's been a little over a year that I've had them and I absolutely love them! I did them myself and I also added extensions which I still have in because my hair is not very long. I did twist and rip and crochet and it took me almost a month to get my whole head because my thumb would get torn up from the rubbing of the crochet hook and that would give my arms a break. I can't wait to be able to take out my extensions and I can't believe they have lasted this long especially being made out of synthetic hair! I should make a dread time line I have pictures from the very beginning it's neat to watch them change!!
Hi I'm from Ontario Canada and all my life I've wanted Dreads .I have a Mowhawk only 10 inches long but I'm seriously thinking of getting Dread extentions .
im not sure if you'll see this comment since this video is kind of old now, but when you did the dread the second time (the ones you have in this video), what size of sections did you do? 1x1?
I am 38. I have wanted dreads since I was 15!!! I have watched probably every video on dreads out there. My hair is fine and this is a big reason I have not gotten them. I just watched a man's video today and he said He would NOT recommend dreads on folks with fine hair because it exposes to much of their scalp. Do you have any advice??
I'm going to be making synthetic dreadlocks (I don't have the funds for human hair ones) in the upcoming month or two... I have short hair - like you in your "attaching extensions to short hair" video - and I was wondering if you'd ever had one pull or come out from where they were joined? I'll be using the twist and rip / back combing to start my natural hair off and then crochet hooking them into tighter locs with the extensions being woven in at the same time.... Any tips on any of this process?
I had one come our like a year later in the back... But the way Avani attached them (she is very good!), they were actually a little tough to remove! I removed them and reattached my own old dreads. :) Avani also did the twist and rip.
By thin, do you mean not a lot of hair? Or literally the strands of hair are fine? You might still be able to get dreadlocks... Check out the website I reference in the video, I believe she has a guide of section size and number of dreads based on the thickness of your ponytail and the hair texture... Good luck!
I would imagine probably the first year you might not like how they look(with that being said most people struggle through the first year anyway) but in a video I watched a girl said at year 2 her dreads had become very thick and even tho they were small and thin at first thickness did come Not sure if you’re still thinking about getting them or have gotten them already Just my thoughts
It's all about section size and how thick your hair is. Avani has a guide on her website about sectioning - check it out at www.ragingrootstudio.com :)
I'm growing my hair now and I want dreads I'm in Biloxi Mississippi been trying to find someone that can do them correctly cuz I don't want no waxes don't want anything in my hair like that. So please let me know if you can help thanks
@cosmohippie do you feel like the texture of your hair changed once it started growing back? I have naturally wavy hair and it holds curl really well if I use heat to style it. I’m just wondering if I dread it and eventually decide to comb them out, will my hair be damaged/ different in any way ?
Tatiana Galiano I’ve watched quite a few videos of people brushing out their dreads and the biggest difference is the ends are sparse, but that makes sense Bc while brushing them out a lot of hair comes out, mostly hair that would’ve fallen out naturally but still But in one she said her hair was actually quite healthy and just needed a moisturizing mask(I mean it hasn’t been conditioned in years so) I can’t imagine your hair itself would change, because it is being left alone completely No heat no products And your hair is still growing from your head and is still going to be your hair after they’re combed out Just My theory
I don't think the texture changed. My hair is healthier though because I don't use heat or harmful products. I think after brushing them out though any scalp would need an adjustment period.
I actually just brushed out about 6 of my dreads(I had 11) and my hair has changed. It doesn’t hold the same way and tends to get frizzy faster than before. I did cut the ends Bc they were so stretched and weak.
what type of sectioning did you decide to do?? Brick lay out? And how thick would you say you started your dreads at?? I have really curly hair thinking about doing the brick lay out and I really like the way your dreads part.
I ended up using the "fan" sectioning. I think it lays a little better with the rounder shape of the sections. (ragingrootsstudio.com/category/dreadlock-education/sectioning/
Do you have any tips or advice for just one or two dreadlocks? I have a lot of thick wavy/frizzy hair and I love it - BUT - a year ago I shaved the side of my head and shaved an undercut. Its grown about 6 inches so far. I've wanted dreads for about ten years but have been ambivalent. I figured since my hair is already in an awkward stage of growing out (the rest of my hair is varying lengths from collar bone and longer, I might as well try a couple dreads. Do you have any tips for where to not put them, where to put them, how to style your hair during the baby stages, etc? Is twist and rip with dread wax a safe at home adventure? I absolutely LOVE your channel and your hair BTW. So beautiful!
Thanks so much! With just a couple of dreadies I would recommend putting them at the bottom... Closer to the edge of the hairline - not somewhere in the middle, because they will suck in the hairs around them and make it hard to maintain the roots. So maybe bottom closer to the back, or behind the ear? 6 inches is a good place to start... I would stay away from wax though! If you don't want to crochet (which is easy by the way!), you can just do twist and rip and then palm roll... They won't be super neat for a while, but much much better than putting wax in your hair... Wax will attract dirt and end up smelling like a nightmare. Ideally you want to stay away from any products that will cause residue to collect in the dreads. Switch to a dread-friendly shampoo (vital goods by Heather are great).
Do you have the sides of your head shaved? And in the back, at the bottom of your head, as well? I have dreads for more than 2 and a half years now, and I'm thinking in going into this style. How it was that shaving? Hugs from Brazil!
I do have the sides shaved! (I don't cut them often, so they grow out a little fluffy), but not the bottom in the back - I basically have a wide dread-hawk. I would recommend that you go to a barber who specializes in cutting with clippers, and knows how to stick to clean lines. Not every hairdresser is good at that! I can go 2-3 months without cutting the sides. It's a lot easier to put the dreads up this way.
I’ve been wanting them for so long! I haven’t found a place to get them done yet and I get what you said I want my hair to get a little longer I also want blonde dreads so I’ll have to dye my hair first then wait a while and get them. I know it’s going to be a long process and I just want it to happen but I’ve been staying patient!!
Sorry for a late response! The ends on the extensions kind of curled on their own after being washed over and over, I never brushed them. Eventually, they looked too messy for my taste!
Hello! No, I did not. Alopecia in this case is often caused by locs that are too tight, which happens when you use interlocking method, especially when they are also small. I would strongly recommend to stay away from that method, regardless of the type of hair you have.
Thanks for answering my first questions. It's me again!!! My doubts and concerns are balding, and molding of the hair. How do you dry them? I already stopped using the blow dryer on my hair now so it can grow. I also stopped using conditioner so that my hair gets used to it. I really want dreadlocks. I heard that you should leave the roots with regular hair so that your head can breathe and also so that you don't get bald spots... with too much weight. What have you experienced?!
Hi! So with preparing your hair - you want to cleanse it with baking soda and rinse with apple cider vinegar, that'll get rid of the old conditioner residue. I found that it left my hair soft, and it adjusted pretty quickly after not using shampoo at all. (This is all before dreads). To avoid balding, you want to make sure that dreads aren't too thin, and that the roots aren't tightened to much, (which is why it's best to avoid interlocking). I don't tighten my roots very often. Maybe once or twice a year... Or like every 8 months-ish? So the roots are locking naturally, but they are a little loose. I usually let my hair air dry, but in the winter I do use a bonnet hairdryer. Yes, the old school one! I don't set it on too high of a setting, and I just speed up the drying process. The wet hair does get a bit heavy. I don't think there is need to worry about molding... Just avoid wax and any product other than light natural oils and residue free shampoo. And don't go to bed with wet hair! As long as there is no product in your hair and you let it dry, it won't mold. I think the question of how much weight is too much weight is pretty individual. Some people have super long thick dreads and their fine. I think you will feel at which point the length and weight are too much to carry and care for. And if you don't like it - you can always brush them out! Oh! And I think having good sectioning will be very helpful too - I prefer the fan section shapes.

Hi again, I understand what you mean. I choose to crochet my hair because I prefer to maintain my dreadlocks that way, however, when I don’t, my hair still locks, it just longer and is a different look. I have very fine hair, which when left uncombed with dread, which is often referred to as the neglect method. Is it rubbing you the wrong way that white people are using the term dreadlocks? Or that non-Rastafarians are using the term? I know many people have their own idea they like to attach to words. The majority of hair on the planet dreads, it’s what it does unless you brush it. Sure we have different hair textures, so the length of time and the look of it might be different. My husband has very tight curls and his dreads are not going to look fuzzy like mine might for a while, but I still crochet his hair to maintain his roots. Most people with dreadlocks (black, white, and in between) maintain the roots in some way, by twisting, palm rolling, interlocking, or crocheting. For my husband and I crocheting works best because I am able to not use any product and keep the roots looking neat.✌️

It's a difference between 1.what you choose to do and WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO in order to get the desired look of choice. The mimicking and copying is quite flattering from this vantage point and all but when it's not legit then hey we have to call out fraudulent activity no matter where it shows it's dreadful head.
Sorry you feel this way.✌️Peace.
