Surprised that none of my friends have uploaded this one ... (maybe I fumbled and simply couldn't find it ...?)
Congrat's to Lazy Cow and notably the man who actually shot the video 'cause very well done !
A two night stand at Chapel Hill NC, which was very successful. Yes the previous night (3-24-93) strikes many minds thanks to a thunderous "Jack Straw" but this 25th show also is a killer. 8th show of the East Coast Tour which ended at Nassau, NY on April 5th ... (oddly, also uploaded, as was 4-4-93, as a LoloYodel dual-cam re-mix).

@@picassomoon6435 I Love the band
But lets get this perfectly clear these are from TAVISTALK INSTITUTE
Quite the "Liberal Band" wouldn't you say.....
@@picassomoon6435 go back to bed America your government is in total control
So lovely to see Jerry enjoying himself like here in '93. I caught a lot of Liberty's on that last summer tour. Love the song. NFA ⚘
If I was a bed, I'd stay unmade. My favorite line of the song.
Well fuck me... read this comment just as Jerry was singing it. Love it.
If I was an eagle, I'd dress like a duck
Went to the well but the water was dry
Dipped my bucket in the clear blue sky
Looked in the bottom and what did I see?
The whole damned world looking back at me
@@TheMewoff always loved this one for obvious reasons.. quack
If I was a man I would stay a man!!!!!!
Most American song ever written for sure
Pretty Damn Patriotic, if you don't mind me saying so.
When Jerry looks over at the band and smiles ❤❤❤
couldn't have said it better
It's really nice to see Jerry enjoying himself, since he gave us so much joy.Toward the end I don't think he had very little fun at all.
He's so happy that he is who he is and is up there singing that awesome new song, perfectly, without missing a note or fumbling a single word. I bet he is sober. So sad that he died a couple of years later.
@@pearlybaker2524 so sad to see him so happy knowing what happened a few years later. All we can do is cherish moments like this 🙂
He’s in good spirits here so good to see jerr bear having a good time ❤he was always truckin tho dude had that lionheart ❤
Happy 4th of July! First time hearing this tune. Been on the bus for a year now and I keep discovering new songs and the little things that bring a tear to your eye or a smile on my face every day!!! Roll away the dew baby

I always loved this song's bouncy, care-free flavor of playfulness!
This one as well as So Many Roads are the Dead's last 2 greatest songs to include in their endlessly impressive catalogue of songs...
Hello again!! 😂
Lazy River Road too.

It's one of Jerry's most playful, party-atmosphere songs! That's why I love it.
Amazing song. Miss this band tons.

i enjoy them but tome its like craving a hamburger and having a really good hotdog
Any ass can sing. But I came to see the singing ass.

RIP Robert Hunter...may the 4 winds blow you safely home 4️⃣🌬🏡

a Gorgeous Song
I saw _many_ shows, during the Brent years, literally like a few after he passed. I'd heard much of the material added in the '90's, but somehow missed this song til hearing it a couple days ago. I thought _I now finally have a favorite Grateful Dead song._ Lyrically, but especially in spirit. 😎
Thanks Brother, a pure philosophy anthem.
+Mark Haren Truly
Such a inspirational song. Jerry truly found his way home. 🌹💀🌹
On his own terms, true freedom fighter 🙃
say what I mean and I don't give a damn, I do believe and I am who I am. awesome. my favorite dead tune. what better song to sum up the all American band.
Home sick for tour...
Was there for this one.
Jerry smiling reminding me how good we had it.
Was home fighting stupid for dead n co last shows. 😊
This is the best ive heard them play desolation row. This is flat beautiful. I have this turned up on my home stereo. My speakers were made in 1972. Wow Bob is just on it. Jerry and his guitar just rings out so well. Hearing right there it's so beautiful of s sound. They are a one of a kind band.
And if you know me, you know i will. Looooove this song.
Jerry Garcia was and still is making people happy. Thanks JG. Peace and love.😊
I have this show on cassette. Lol. A beautiful sbd recording. Best version of this tune I do believe. 😁😁😁
I was at these 2 nights, lucy encore, Spanish jam, unreal shows. But had no idea how true this song would have ever beeen today!!! Love the 2nd lyric and live by that.
I was so happy hearing this live. I remember it so clearly. This was such a great show. On the way in the guy next to me said I just got out of jail and I know they are going to open with Alabama Getaway. They did.
A determined looking Jerry..such a good song
Looks like he has one foot in the grave to me but I'm new here, never saw Jerry or the dreadful grapes b4 🥺
Great performance of this song. Color me impressed.
This is really, really good. thanks for the upload and certainly the person who filmed it.
man, i have such good memories of these chapel hill shows...maybe not the best played shows of the later years but the vibe was spectacular at those shows....lucy in the sky with diamonds encore...that kind of vibe
These shows were amazing!!!
Couldn’t believe that they did LSD for encore that night. My bro heard em do it in sound check and I was like yeah dude. Great show that night. Was my girls second show at the time. I was on tour that spring. Decent tour that year except for Chicago. Keep on groovin kidd. 40 years on the bus
Jerry & the band were on fire in '93. Incredible year for JGB as well.
I was there on my birthday! Thanx. ❄️🌎☂️❣️👌🤣❣️
This is so good. A great example of poetic value in a song. Sorry Phish people their best song do not have poetic value like any Grateful Dead songs. This song is just beautiful. Jerry's voice just beings are warm feeling to my soul. I am still sad from Jerry passing out of the physical realm of existence over to the spiritual side. He definitely was a special human being. Jerry's music brought so much happiness to so many people. I am so glad i got to be a part of the seen and witness the GD play. I believe the experience made me a better person. Peace love and happiness to all. Hallelu YAH!
Definition of America you can do what ever you want as long as you have the will
What a great song. Some of Garcia's brilliance is evident when you compare this arrangement with R. Hunter's recording of this song years earlier.
Wow, this sounds so gooood! I'm glad the days of 100th generation Maxell tapes are behind us. Thanks for posting and taking me back once again!
dreamsincolors I always got first gen 😁 although my taper buddy did occasionally give me back TDKs for the blank Maxells I gave him. 😂
Oh wasn't that fun though? Finding another tape-head, curating their collection, trading, finding that rare one you were looking for. Good Times.
Last night was fucking incredible. Obviously nothing is like Jerry and man I hope yall appreciate that gift you got thankful grateful and blessed if you still read this we probably met ;) NFA GDF 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💀💀💕🦅🔥🔥🌹🌹🇺🇸🇺🇸

Lesh has said there were only a few great moments in the latter years. I'm not sure I agree, but if he's right, this is surely one of them! xoxo Thank you Jerry
He was speaking from his perspective being in the band. It was always magical for me even in the last years.
Every Fourth of July I gotta spin this 8-10 times. Happy fourth in these strange times
I play it every day now during these anti freedom / anti liberty / new world bull crap times
YES. Love this song. Thanks for posting. Hope the boys play this at Shoreline on the 30th.
More relevant than ever. Love that this was Jerry's swan song.
Made me tear up,😢
First night , Chapel Hill was the best show after Brent died!!!!!
Saw a bird with a tear in his eye
Walking to New Orleans my oh my
Hey, now, Bird, wouldn't you rather die
Than walk this world when you're born to fly?
If I was the sun, I'd look for shade
If I was a bed, I would stay unmade
If I was a river I'd run uphill
If you call me you know I will
If you call me you know I will
Ooo, freedom
Ooo, liberty
Ooo, leave me alone
To find my own way home
To find my own way home
Say what I mean and I don't give a damn
I do believe and I am who I am
Hey now Mama come and take my hand
Whole lotta shakin' all over this land
If I was an eagle I'd dress like a duck
Crawl like a lizard and honk like a truck
If I get a notion I'll climb this tree
or chop it down and you can't stop me
Chop it down and you can't stop me
Ooo, freedom
Ooo, liberty
Ooo, leave me alone
To find my own way home
To find my own way home
Went to the well but the water was dry
Dipped my bucket in the clear blue sky
Looked in the bottom and what did I see?
The whole damned world looking back at me
If I was a bottle I'd spill for love
Sake of mercy I'd kill for love
If I was a liar I'd lie for love
Sake of my baby I'd die for love
Sake of my baby I'd die for love
Ooo, freedom
Ooo, liberty
Ooo, leave me alone
To find my own way home
To find my own way home
I'm gonna find my own way home
I'd die for love...

I love how Jerry fingerpicks the entire verse and only strums the chorus. He's one of the greatest rock fingerpickers ever but I think Mark Knopfler is the best.
Mark Knopfler has all 10 fingers.
@@TheMewoff but Jerry uses all 10, or 9 1/2, fingers, unlike many of his fellow guitarists www.woodytone.com/2010/02/01/jerry-garcias-surprisingly-interesting-technique/
I worship Knopfler, his guitar playing is in a league all its own, but Jeff Beck can't go without mention...
@@pearlybaker2524 Love Mark Knopfler and Jeff Beck of course, just pointing out the obvious. But on the subject, any time there is a discussion about the greatest guitarist ever, I think the only definitive answer is "Jerry Garcia is the most famous 9 fingered guitarist...so far."
@@pearlybaker2524 Also Alice, in case you haven't seen it, ruclips.net/video/-mJt_T0N0mQ/видео.html - Paul McCartney doing the Abbey Road medley. I feel as if I truly have not made it home since then sometimes. Miss tour, miss my friends. Miss the good vibes. Miss the magical synchronicity of it all.
My favorite song. Ive been wishing more artists would cover this tune. How come nobody plays this song? Is it because it was one of the last dead tunes written?
It's because they don't find freedom and liberty important anymore like most musicians nowadays ....
@@robfredhjr freedom and liberty were foundation of the Grateful Dead experience.

The Grateful Dead were like the best part of "running away from home and joining the circus". Sure, the clowns on the 10 foot unicycles fell over once in awhile and messed up the bit, but when it all worked out it was just magic.
Well said.

Pretty sure this was supposed to be the national anthem.

this was originally a Robert Hunter song right? Must have been pretty rare for the Dead to play.
B Johnson
There all pretty much Robert Hunter songs, at least half or more. Great songwriter, right up there with Dylan.
@@SultanOSwing714
Half are Hunter songs?
Not sure what you mean by that. Almost all of Jerry's originals are Garcia/Hunter.
Hunter recorded it long before the Dead did it. He released his version in 1987, so at the time it was thought of as one of his solo tunes than as a GD song. But the Dead’s version is quite different in many ways.
