What the heck is the van build fest?
Van build playlist: • Enigmatic Nomadics Van...
    About three years ago
I started to help people out in the desserts of Arizona by figuring out how I could help them improve their living conditions.
The idea took off and the Van Builds were born. Each year has grown in volunteers and people that needed and wanted help. Last year we accomplished over 350 jobs from solar consultations and installation, fan installations, carpentry, sewing, and welding to cooking. We are so very fortunate to have so many volunteers that donate their time and expertise. ~Jamie

Hey Jamie. I was a long haul truck driver and have experienced all of these issues. Your ideas about hard wiring are right on, I think the 12v industry should come up with a better connector system! The one thing I stress to anyone I talk to is keep the fan vents and even the inside as best you can clean from dust and lint! With these units living mostly on the floor, its a huge problem, and the biggest cause for fan and heat sink failure. Thanks for sharing your hard work!

Ten years ago my wife and I had the same issues with refrigeration here on the road. We got lucky and found a used Engel Fridge/Freezer on Craigslist for $500. Bought it from a retired Navy Seal in Hudson, FL. Said he used it two times for Daytona race days. It looked and smelled new. That fridge has now been running 10 years straight without a day off and with absolutely NO issues. They are expensive, but one thing we learned on the road is you get what you pay for. The Engel turned out to be a game changer for us. The joy of having a cool drink on a hot day after being out for days and weeks at a time is joy defined. Even just being able to keep our leftovers was fantastic. Largest electrical draw is 2.5 amps/hr, but usually cycles at around 1.8 amps/hr in cool weather and only runs when called upon by the thermostat. Are you even a real road warrior without a real refrigerator on the road? No. Just do it.

These are generic Chinese units that fall under different brand names - all with the same innards. (Alpicool comes to mind). That said, my 20 qt runs perfectly and has been for the last 6 months. I passed on the pricey dometic and took a chance. Glad I did. My 100ah battery and single 100 watt solar panel keeps it going along with a few LED lights, tablet, phone and a few low-powered trinkets. (But with 2 cloudy days in a row I'm hosed). Your logic is sound and I'm quite surprised there are still full-timers out there that put up with the hassles of ice.

I am a new sub. I was run over and nearly killed 3.5 yrs ago so here I am trying to decide what to do, with liberty being stolen from us all daily by the government and the related police state / cabals.
When you factor in the hassles with ice, all total, (lost / soaked food, bacteria, driving to get ice, worrying about it, the weight of the ice / water you carry around, the ice taking up half your space or 1/3 of the food space, etc etc ) -- these types of coolers are the only way to go, you just have to budget for the power to run them and the cost of the unit themselves.
Keep up the good work helping people Jamie, I have heard your name lots and I read your notes below here first. I am a good example of someone walking across an intersection, and being run down for no good reason, and my file being buried and my life ruined by the state, which is illegitimate and corrupt.

Instead of clipping the end, just unscrew the end of the cable. Pull out the cable from the end, and you can see which wires go to the fuse is hot, the wire hooked to the body is negative.

Chicken juice! Yummm... Thank you so much for this highly instructive video. Not having any electrical training, I too needed to know how to splice to a 12 volt connector without reversing polarity. Now I'm confident I can do it. All Ziploc type bags are porous and leak water and air, both chicken juice and that fresh ounce of weed. I've been van dwelling for two years and still using a cooler. Ice consumption gets much cheaper in winter here in Boston. A five pound bag will last a week in December through February. I've started using the oven stuffer roasting bags for perishables in the cooler. They are non-porous, leak proof and stink proof, I used them when I was growing medical marijuana. A slab of polystyrene foam insulation under the refrigerator would do a lot to keep it cold too. In summer, I get condensation on the floor underneath the cooler. Thanks again, I'll be looking into the Extreme refrigerator too.

Great review, thanks for the video! One thing I would mention is to find the positive and negative wire on the 12v lighter plug would be to cut and strip one of the wires and use the multimeter in continuity mode to trace if the wire is positive or negative. The center (pin) on the plug is positive and the outside of the plug is negative. Then mark which it is and then go ahead and cut the other wire and finish your splice (with the in-line fuse!). Much safer imo then plugging it in with two exposed wires that could accidentally touch in the process.

Jamie, I bought this same cooler about 3 months ago and it's been operating flawlessly ever since. I use mine as a fridge instead of a freezer and keep it at 41゚ and it works great even in Eco mode which is where I usually keep it.
The Bluetooth app works great as well.
Incidentally, I'm the guy that talked to you a few months back about the portable generator I bought at Costco. That was just before you went to Mexico. That has worked out very well as well. I tried sending you a update about the time you came back from Mexico but for some reason the text would not go through.

Good job Jamie! Always love your vids. They are so informative to everyone. It was hard to concentrate on you though. There was a cute little 4 legger in the bottom right of the screen that was hard to take ones eyes off of as she was stealing every scene! J

First video of yours that I've watched. I enjoyed it.
I keep telling myself I need a setup like that in my van, if for nothing else, bringing groceries home in the van during the summer as it's a bit of a drive, then for travling....I often forget the ice chest for groceries, but if I had o e of these, I could just keep it plugged in at the house and switch it over to an aux bat in the van when I drive it. Then it will keep cool all the time.

Nice that isn't a bad price for a 12V one for sure I just use an 120 AC powered small freezer with a external temperature relay. Same power consumption as the 12v ones since freezers have allot more insulation than refrigerators so makes it allot better than a dorm frig. Not sure on life of them I have had mine for three years now and cost me $120 so think I am good even if it dies.

The center conductor on the male 12V plug (cigarette plug )is the positive. You can cut it a bit long and use your meter to check conductivity from the center conductor to which wire, after cutting. The two conductor wire usually has a small white stripe to help identify one from the other.

You inspired me to do something I have been wanting to do with my build... I have the older 16 qt Alpicool C15 Refrigerator and I am powering it with an Inergy Kodiak with a 100-watt roof solar panel... I keep telling myself to actually run it for several days or a week to see if the 100w panel is going to be able to keep up, but I forget... So after watching this I decided to give it a test run...Stop hoping and give it a real test run... If I remember, I will reply back with the results...

Day 3 followup... My 100w panel is keeping up... I had one day of overcast and rain,... but I think I have just enough solar... Holding 32° F

Thanks Jamie, thought I'd mention Will Prowse has videos on his channel about switching the cord over to different connections including the inline fuse in case anyone needs to see a demonstration of what you're referring to.

One factor you should have mentioned. For $34 more you can get a 3 year warranty from Amazon. If it fails for mechanical reasons. They’ll replace it. Keep the videos coming.

Chicken juice, bad stuff lol! You've only been at this one year longer than me, I ran into you pretty early on in the process. I still use a Yeti cooler in the van but freeze ice packs in my 12v freezer. Instead of buying ice. Though most often I just use the fridge in my trailer. Next year planning more van excursions without the trailer. Take care Jamie.🤓
