Willows roots grow so fast you can literally cut them back twice a year. Nice looking tree, I personally would have left the bulb alone. But that's just me.

Digit Alice (love the name) thanks for the feedback! You really would've left it? I'm actually thinking about cutting the tree just above it & growing new roots there for the 3 trunks. Thanks again!

I've never air layered a willow, just cut and put in water, once roots have formed then put into soil. Keep roots moist. They're heavy drinkers. Good luck to you, whatever you decide to do.

@@digitalice7875 thanks, yes that would be how I handle it if I decide to try it...wait until leaf drop, cut off & just put in water. Appreciate your comments!

Don't know if you would want to attempt it but you could air layer it at an angle if something like this comes up again. I've already pulled air layerings from a crab apple and a sugar maple. Ive wanted a willow for a long time but never can find one

Hey Josh, really weird timing! I was just working on my Chinese Elm that I'm attempting an air layer on this past weekend & was thinking about my Willows & how easily they grow roots! Along the same lines of just coming up with creative solutions to any tree we may have issues with. Appreciate the feedback very much!

@@bonedrybonsai4109 ok wow since you're working on an elm I'll ask you too because I can't find ANYTHING on google about it... I have a few rock elms around mame sized and noticed this morning two of them have new leaves coming in that are white and swollen, would you happen to know what that can be from? Other than that they seem fine, everything else on them is nice and green

Where are you Josh? I hope I haven't misrepresented my knowledge base, my channel is a journey of someone new to the bonsai AND horticultural world but I'd like to learn with you. Are the new leaves at elongating tips or on the interior? I hope you allow them to develop & keep me updated!

@@bonedrybonsai4109 not at all, it's actually one of the reasons I like your channel. I just don't have anyone local around in the same hobby so I'm asking anyone I can. They're at both places, tip and inside. If it was just one tree I honestly wouldn't have put to much thought into it and snipped them off but with it happening to two it's making me wonder. One tree I cut them off and the other I'm leaving be and moving it to a different spot in case it's some sort of fungus or disease. I'll let you know what happens. And where am I location wise? Southeast Tennessee

Thanks Josh yea, we're in 2 different worlds. You've got moisture & pests that I'll never have to deal with while I've got issues you'll never see as well. I wish I knew more & I'll be trying to find out about this. Thanks for keeping in touch

How do you know which roots you want to keep? Probably a dumb question, but I'm just now learning.

Me too!! Anything I removed in this video shouldn't really affect the tree, especially this time of year when it's not in a growing phase. When I do actually repot this I'll be much more selective as far as roots growing in the right direction and being proportionate in size to best grow a (hopefully) flowing, wide radial root base and trunk. I've got trees I'll be repotting and will try to cover the thought process! Thanks!!
