- Is welding glass safe for viewing the sun? Perhaps, but it depends on the shade level. There seems to be a bit of disagreement out there. Some sources say #12. Others say #14. See the links below for more details.

Welding glass for the eclipse? Maybe. Here are some references. This is not a definitive list, nor am I an expert on welding glass. Proceed with caution:
- waterwelders.c... - says #12 glass is fine
- eclipse2017.na... - says #12 is ok, but higher is better
- www.rasc.ca/to... - this suggests #14 glass is fine
Ultimately, the safest thing is to just get a pair of ISO 12312-2 rated solar glasses. Link above.

AFAIK, NASA recommends shade 9 at least.
I used iso glasses in 2017 and it worked to protect my eyes but i left me vulnerable to unanticipated problems with my intestines which i still live with.
My father was a professional welder. He said that the light from an arc welder was brighter than the sun.
I could see that. The light is very concentrated. Not to mention, the welder is so close to it.
Too late, I've already done it.
I presume it was fine? What shade level did you use?
