      +Marcus Lewis of course not beloved. Remember absolute power corrupts absolutely. But it is wonderful to know that people are aware and the more we talk about it the more the masses can hold their government responsible and accountable.

      I've wanted to know for a while now... Are most Americans really all pro military (America is the best Wahoo..) (we all love our politicians... Land of the free bullshit) or do they realise how corrupt and capitalised and racist their government is... Don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with being patriotic... But they must of worked out that 911 for instance was a complete bullshit cover story to initiate the Iraq invasion

    This is so typical.
    Comments criticising Akala clearly didn't listen to him, his words clearly went through one ear and out the other.
    1. Akala isn't some misguided EU apologist/naive liberal progressive.
    2. The EU IS NOT perfect but it still is VERY useful.
    3. Akala RIGHTLY pointed out that the TONE on the conversation regarding Brexit was ABSOLUTELY wrong, the UK focused on the wrong things regarding the discourse to Stay or Leave the EU.
    Ultimately, the UK was duped by everyone involved bringing the conversation to the public, and yes we left because ultimately the majority of citizens felt 'funny looking brown people' coming in was very scary.

    • @5e1enium
      @5e1enium 8 лет назад +4

      No, he's way off on this. You can't just dismiss the fact that there is zero democratic accountability within the EU as "valid reasons" and then move on.
      Furthermore surveys suggest that immigration wasn't a big factor in the leave vote (about 38% if I remember rightly), compared with sovereignty (59%).
      Additionally, his use of stats is shallow. I'd expect more from someone who is used to unpacking this kind of thing - that black people are arrested more does not mean that black people are criminals for example.
      And to suggest that BME people were the target of the anti-immigration rhetoric is, frankly, idiotic.
      Love his talks, learnt so much from him, but he needs to look deeper on this one.

      @@candycane6534 I think when talking about immigration control you need to be specific. The only control Britain didn’t have on immigration are migrants who are EU passport holders. Migrants from the rest of the world have always needed to apply for a visa to come to Britain so Britain has always had control of that & that had nothing to do with the EU

      He really isn't.
      - Media made it "all about funny brown people coming in". Utter bullshit of the first order.
      It was as much about our sovereignty & self rule as immigration.
      - The EU membership HAS resulted in mass immigration levels. This is indisputable.
      - The levels of immigration in Britain since around 1996 have hit huge record levels basically year on year. It is NOT racist to oppose these levels like Akala seems to suggest.
      - Historic UK imperialism is NOT a reason to simply accept these levels nor recent involvement in wars.
      - Scotland is NOT socially more "progressive" than England.
      - Leavers think "Immigration is a bad thing" Wrong! He should have said "some" leavers think "mass, uncontrolled immigration is a bad thing".
      - It was people like Akala that ruined the "tone of the debate", not the media.

    I actually disagree with him. I lived in France, I have family that lives in France and Belgium. I have friends who have lived in Germany, Holland and other European countries, and I can tell you that Britain is the least racist country in Europe. The divide in Britain comes down to class not t race, it comes down to the haves and have nots. Brexit wasn't about African and Caribbean migration to Britain, it was about European, particularly Eastern European migration. Trust me, we blacks have it better in Britain, compared to those who live in the rest of Europe.

      Have a look at the camp in calais and tell me otherwise, the reality is it was the remain camp's job to disprove the immigration argument. When you look at immirgration statistict's you know the NUMBERS the FACT's, it convey's an issue that is almost impossible to address in a compromised manor, yet project fear chose to either ignore the issue or pretend it was a non issue, when all you have to do is walk down a street in supposed English city called London and see how long it is before you hear any english being spoken.
      Wether the immirgrants were brown white, yellow, black, asian alien is Irrelevant to the fact that immirgration in numbers and statistics as of right now is an issue and is quite frankly not sustainable for the future of this country.

  • @user-fe3lt2vx3m
    @user-fe3lt2vx3m 8 лет назад +12

    The comparison between Cameron and Obama is almost entirely inaccurate - in the states, they literally vote for a person to be president e.g. Trump, Clinton, Obama etc. In the UK, we vote for our local MPs, who belong to a party, with the notion that if one party gains a majority of constituencies they will be "in power", with their *internally* elected First Minister taking over as Prime Minister.
    In short, Cameron happened to be the face of the party that was elected, and although we like to paraphrase voting for a party for voting for its figurehead, it shouldn't be confused with United States politics in which they truly elect a president.

    • @user-fe3lt2vx3m
      @user-fe3lt2vx3m 8 лет назад +1

      Cameron was not elected by the "people", and if you think that you misunderstand the nature of our political paradigm. The conservatives voted for the head of their party internally, the people voted for local mps in their area (of which the majority were conservative) and therefore the head of that party became our Prime Minister.

    • @TheYeetusLord
      @TheYeetusLord 8 лет назад +1

      hmm fairly certain we elect the politician we (individually) think is best to run the country... We don't vote for the party as a whole. Why do you think that on the ballot sheets it has the name of the politician who's head of the party that name is right next to the name of the politician leading it.

    • @animelytical8354
      @animelytical8354 8 лет назад +1

      While this is accurate, most decisions made at a local level are made at least with the knowledge of what person their vote supports to be PM, and often without the knowledge on personal positions of the person who they are directly electing.
      The leader's mandate for leadership is based off of the idea that people know what the leader's manifesto is. It is not paraphrased the way it is for no reason.
      That being said, it must be accepted that your vote is to put a party in power. Once the election has taken place, the general makeup of the Commons is fixed.
      While I agree that Cameron was not simply elected by the people, but also by the party, we never enter elections without a government or opposition leader, because they are often a large deciding factor, hence the commonly...I think...held belief that Labour are going nowhere fast.

    • @user-fe3lt2vx3m
      @user-fe3lt2vx3m 8 лет назад +1

      Animelytical Yeah they are a deciding factor, but that is down to people not understand their role in voting. In general we can assume that most people start with the knowledge of party leaders and then enquire as to who actually represents that party in their local area.

    • @user-fe3lt2vx3m
      @user-fe3lt2vx3m 8 лет назад

      Terrezio No, on the ballot you will see your local candidates next to their respective parties. You know the party leaders through the media. Maybe when you vote, in your mind you are voting for a party leader but that isn't really how the system actually functions. In reality, you have no say whatsoever in who we be elected as head of a party as it is done internally.

    I like most of what Akala says, but a lot of what he says in this clip is completely unfounded or not true.
    1. 70% of Scotland voted to remain in the EU, not 100% of it as he claims, and it is not a more progressively cultural country than England.
    2. He's talking complete nonsense about Nigel Farage "jumping ship". He campaigned for 20 years to leave the EU and once he achieved what he wanted, he took a well deserved break from being party leader of UKIP but is still an MEP in the EU and Co-President of the EFDD, until we leave. That means he will be making decisions and influencing our negotiations with the EU.
    3. With regards to immigration, the campaign was not based on "funny brown people". It was a genuine concern over the numbers of people coming into our country, who will inevitably put a strain on public services. Not to mention terrorists coming from the Middle East which the government chose to turn a blind eye to.

    All Brexit will achieve is higher prices on food, products, holidays. And other countries even outside the EU will feel they can put tariffs on things aswell. Northern Ireland will probably become part of the Republic. Dacia Sandero was £5995, now it is £6995. Thanks Brexit.
    The immigrants that most people in Britain are concerned about will keep coming as mostly they arent from EU countries, flights, ships and lorrys are not gonna stop. And our authorities dont have the balls to tackle real problem immigrants anyway. But they did have a pop at harmless 70 year old men from St Lucia and stuff.

    You are not a racist if you voted to leave...white people contribute to the immigration statistics. Like white people from Eastern Europe. It's wrong to focus on racism when discussing the Eu exit there are many other factors to consider. It was more economic concerns which made me vote leave. What's racist about wanting to control your boarders anyway. There are racist people who were just focused on immigration but to imply everyone was is wrong.

      that's because minorities have always been picked on so what other point of view are they supposed to speak from?? Being a well off white brit there's obviously nothing for you to criticise, but if you've been brought up in the areas where these people (and whites as well) have been brought up in, where they're only stable financially to live there, then you'd have a thing or two to say about the corruption of this country. Because you're too well off to see that this country is corrupt as fuck, you're just lucky due to where and who you were born and raised in to

      Thank you. One thing which saddens me is the amount of dumbass millenials minorities who are docile and dim and have no understanding of the nuanced structural inequalities that exist throughout the UK. Also add the fact that the Britissh media partakes on an intensive indoctrination campaign in which they highlight the misfortunes of minority groups in other countries to make it seem as if things are completely rosy here.
      What people must remember is that most of the countries people cite have homogeneous populations or one simply does not have a good understanding of the social dynamics within them. The inequalities in the UK (the UK IS THE MOST ECONOMICALLY UNEQUAL COUNTRY IN EUROPE, look it up) are deep rooted and, unlike America, transcend geographical and class based lines as well as ethnic ones. What the UK does have is a highly efficient system of LAW AND ORDER which means that its bureaucracies can still provide a fair amount of impartiality...essentially providing a temporary taping over the many cracks.

    Just to clarify, when a prime minister or any head of a political party resigns, their replacement is usually chosen by a leadership contest. This is something akin to party primaries in the US, though each party has their own rules. In the case of the Conservative party (Tory party or Tories for short) I think the party MPs (Members of Parliament, kind of like US congressmen) whittle the candidates down to two and then the final vote goes to public members of the Tory party. This time round there was no leadership contest because all of candidates apart from Theresa May dropped out when they realised they didn't have the backing of enough of the party. So May became the prime minister by default

    Claiming the EU doesn't determine UK immigration is false, why then are EU citizens allowed to live and work in the UK then? Would the UK have been allowed in the EU if they didn't agree to one of its' fundamental principles of existence upon joining, the free movement of peoples between its' borders?
    Akala means that the UK isn't in the Shengen zone, which means unlike continental EU members people do need a passport to enter Britains borders regardless of being an EU citizen, so that is a decision that's up to the UK gov as well as the right to outline how a person fully immigrates to a country and becomes a citizen of that place like every other EU country does. To say the EU doesn't determine UK immigration though is ridiculous, I'm inclined more towards open borders but was critical of EU membership for the reason Akala pointed out as far as corporate cronyism, but to those who voted for Brexit because of immigration did substantially affect how UK immigration conducts itself once Britain is officially out of the European Union.

    Please sorry about the length but pleasr read if you want to undetstand the Brexit situation.Some of what he says is true.But over the last 10 years the U.K has created more jobs than all the E.U put together (about 2 and a half million ).And in this time more than that amount of people have come to the U.K from Eastern Europe.People in a short period of time saw the populations of their towns transform.And no one voted for this.We were fed lies and told that 10s of thousands would come from Poland,Romania,Hungry ,Slovakia, Slovenia etc instead millions came.And of course 95 % didn't come to do highly skilled highly paid jobs and live in wealthy areas.They came after low skilled work in poor areas .Many of which were areas that have never recovered from the 80s when all the Industrys that had provided well paid jobs to millions had dissappeared (often to lower paid countries like Poland and Chech Republic ).So jobs that were there in many instances went to migrants .Local people found it difficult to get a job and of course all this surplus labour kept wages low.Plus the NHS the free healthcare that me and my parents and grandparents have paid into,was under massive strain.Where before you could get a Drs appointment the next day now we were waiting 3 weeks to see a Dr.Then school places were oversubscribed and people couldn't get their kids in local schools. Add to this migrant crisis of the last few years into the mix.Again the media lied and created a false narrative. It was claimed that all these people were families fleeing war.When it was plain to see it was 80% young males the vast majority of which were from Africa or Pakistan or Albania ,economic migrants who had no right to come to Europe.Then New Years eve in Cologne happened (and not just Cologne all over Europe) which at first the government and media tried to cover up.Then attitudes changed. In this time our government had tried to get the EU to change and reform and it was just laughed at.So as soon as the people had a chance to vote against the E.U the majority took it.Now please let me state that I love Polish people.The girls are hot and I am in love with a Polish girl.Same for all the other countries. My best male friend is Lithuanian.These people have come here for a better life.And I can't blame them.It takes courage to just up and leave behind the people and places you love.I in no way hate them.It is the system I hate and there are many more reasons I voted out.But I am no racist.

      @CountJimbo, I'm like anyone else, I can't foresee the future. He gives a very negative assessment of the past and current system in the UK and seems to see negatives, but gives no answers to the problems. Possible others also see the problems and have voted to leave to make a change, to address problems rather than just tell people there are problems. Don't misunderstand me, I've watched him many times and he's very knowledgeable on subjects relating to black history and is right to help address the misconception on that subject. I however only see him on current affairs highlighting what he sees as negatives, which we can all do and not address the problems as he sees them and commit to any course.

    • @garethm7510
      @garethm7510 4 года назад

      @CountJimbo, I think you've got a good point. With such a long history, you can kind of understand that no one will recognize all the possibilities and even when "problems" are pointed out, no one has the answers. I personally believe it was the reason Brexit took place, the ruling classes just pile more problems on and when it comes to addressing problems they are nowhere to be seen. Most people just want to living in peace and bring up their families, but when you pile on so many problems, problems they can't do anything about general and had nothing to do with the making of, they look to a "reboot". It's like having a narcissistic partner, you try at first to understand them, then you look to try and sort out the problems and all the time your being told it's your fault. In the end you give in or get out, I think this is what happened with the vote for Brexit, keep going around and around, or walk away. And funnily, the remain voters are treating the leave voters as a narcissist would, with blame, alligators of race hate, stupidity, poorly educated etc. Very much how narcissist behaves and still only bring up problems and blame. I'm not a leave voter, but I could and can see why they did it.

      I think he said very clearly in another interview with djvlad that the comparison between the respective histories of African people in America and the UK is like comparing "apples and oranges" so I don't think that's an accurate assessment of what he's trying to achieve. In fact, Akala quite often speaks about the way in which Britain's social problems actually stem from power structures originally established to shore-up the class system, which has had an equally detrimental effect on working-class white communities (like the one I live in). This is very different to America's social/racial problems because the historical events leading up to the establishment of that country were very different.
      Also, just because someone speaks intelligently doesn't mean that they're middle-class. Public libraries were invented so that people who didn't have access to the education establishments of the privileged could become informed about any subject they wished. Although I'm proud to be a working-class man, I would never be proud of being wilfully ignorant for the sake of looking more like an "ordinary" working-class man. It's a very comfortable stereotype to wear but it won't change our society here in the UK if we're all pretending we're Del boy or Danny Dyer.
      I get what you mean about people drinking their posh coffee and moaning about their "first-world problems" but make sure you don't throw the baby out with the bath water. It's very easy to disparage commentators like Akala by saying stuff about "... identity complexes... pathetic whinging... chip on his shoulder..." etc but the fact is that we often go about our days getting on with life without asking ourselves hard questions that make us more conscious of our society. If you're working-class and you want society to change for the better then inform yourself about issues and make sure you challenge the ideas people are proposing.

    I don't accept this guys explanation, when you've had about 5 million net migration to a country in about 10 years people are going to feel their public services. It's depressing when British see the whole thing through the lens of race.
