- The First Sheaf is a folk horror story set in the backwaters of rural England. A new vicar goes to a rural parish that has suffered a terrible drought. The local folk shun him and want nothing of his god. He fears they have other gods of their own. Then a young girl goes missing, and the vicar's son must search out the mystery of the round field and pay a terrible price for the knowledge he gains. Think The Wicker Man meets John Barleycorn. Folk horror before they invented the term 'folk horror'

Thanks for this. I needed a distraction from cleaning. A great reading. I really felt like I was at some pub hearing a bloke telling me an adventure he'd had. I had to go get a beer to accompany the tale.

I love the concept of groups of atavist pagan communities leftover in Britain. Very unnerving, and always makes me think of Christopher Lee as Lord Summer Isle in "The Wicker Man."

As if you are sitting right across the table with a strong cup of brew, telling me about a horrifying event in your life. I must listen to it again. @@marg9131 Sorry; most people have never heard of it. A comment a little further down actually reveals exactly what happens in this story, so I didn't think comparing it to be a little like Harvest Home was a spoiler. After all, since you've read both, you can see that they are really only similar in theme not plot.

@@ClassicGhost Braz - look what I found!! Step by step instructions from a fellow Brit - his channel is called VEED STUDIO - ruclips.net/video/aSYWjLkL6To/видео.html. Now, I asked him whether or not you can select closed captions AFTER you've uploaded the video OR do you need to delete the video and start fresh, i.e., clicking up add subtitles (and select the language you want, English). I'm guessing you probably can't add subtitles AFTER you've downloaded the video. Don't you hate that? If that's the case, I wouldn't ask you to upload this story again, UNLESS you could do it easily. So hopefully his video helps. ;)

I lived in Thorpe Bay, Essex , which is very close to Great Wakering, generally considered to be the driest place in England. Now residing in South Florida which might be one of the wettest places in the US during the summer.
It's hard to believe how hard the east of England gets (living in the wet west)

Now it sounds to me as if Megs Jenkins in your beginning music is in fact saying “locked drawer,” not “room” which is creepy in itself. A psychologist would have a field day! I have to find out what movie that is from!

@@possumaintdead I watched it after seeing it linked in the comments a month or two back. My 1st thought was 'ok, interesting biker gang fashion.. just a bad _A Clockwork Orange_ exploitation film.. move along, nothing to see here' but I ended up watching the whole thing lol.
I still hear 'locked drawer' even with the visual of him opening the locked door. Honestly, I find a locked drawer more interesting for some reason.. another question for the psychologist :D

Hi Tony, love Hawkwind, their interpretation of The Machine Stops would be a perfect musical score for a fantastic Montreal Dance Troupe who's name, of course I can't recall. Maybe I can find them on YT. This story is an ex. of folk horror is it? I fell asleep first time! I still get sickened by S. Jackson's The Lottery and The Wickerman, the ending- now that's horrifying... Here again the language leaps of the page ! The movie I mentioned with a voice like your American accent, was Blood Creek. Didn't finish it, sorry too bloody and dumb. The horror genre at the movies is almost dead. Namaste. Z. Really enjoyed this tale -- I listened to it today and of course there was no trace of the distortion that somewhat marred the livestream a couple days ago. After hearing that first reading, I left a comment, which you were good enough to respond to. Your reply came in my daily feed, but when I clicked on it, it disappeared. You may recall my mention of Walter de la Mare and "Out of the Deep" (not "From the Deep," my mistake.) I'd appreciate it if you could respond again, as there's no trace of comment or response now. Anyway, great reading of Wakefield, well worth a second listen. Thanks!
