An adult does not get sucked into a situation.....a child does. Back and Mepham took advantage of Reiha and abused her. He indirectly killed her, and is a disgrace.
They should have been dismissed the moment it was discovered. He should have been charged with child abuse. In my opinion he is a peodophile. Mepham should not have been allowed to continue to work with children either. I feel very sad for Reiha's parents. I hope they find some peace. .I survived a very serious suicide attempt as a teenager 40 years ago and eventually trained as a special needs teacher. So I could use what Id learnt to help other kids like me.. Thankyou for your courage in sharing.. it will raise awareness and help to stop other young girls from being manipulated by pedophiles like her teacher... my heart aches for you both... your courage.and determination to do right by your beloved daughter is inspirational....Godbless you both.

Here in the U.S. he would have had at least been taken away in handcuffs and lost his position. He is a sexual predator and should have been arrested.
I find this story very very sad and feel that this young girl was let down completely by every one of the govt departments that should have protected her, the school, doctors, teachers and the police. I find it very hard to accept that with all the laws and regulations and safeguards in place , the very person that these laws were meant to protect seemed to be invisible.... It's funny that the govt seems to sort out laws involving petty things like parking fines and unpaid court fines but when it comes to actually protecting the lives of vulnerable people in society the laws fall far short of what a normal person would consider adequate....

What a tragic and extremely difficult story to listen to! My heart goes out to both parents and her friends and loved ones.
The best way for teens ever to overcome their problems is to tell their parents. There's a lot who care and want to help. Many will.

Him getting involved with Reiha started something that could never end well. I think she prolly was sooo happy around him, thought she loved him and didn't look ahead to a time that it would have to end. He had no business with her at all and maye giving her false hopes. I can just imagine the devestation for her when it was going to end bc when you want to be around a certain person nothing else matters. I am so sorry that your precious daughterdid this at such a yung age She sure did have her whole life ahead of her. At that age u don't realize "things will get better" and they do.

This happened to me at intermediate back in 92, however my teacher used the fear I had of failure and my father and he used to follow me home in his car then drink down the pub at the end of my street causing me to never leave the house. It breaks my heart to know this is still happening, especially with the 24/7 access of cellphones ect. New Zealand has a long sad history of not protecting the young when it comes to people with power and the agencies that are supposed to help.
To the parents, there is nothing you could have done when it comes to a predator that is in a position of authority. Just letting her know that you loved her unconditionally and were always there for her was all that she would’ve needed and it seems you did that. It’s not your fault and u did nothing wrong. I heard a young woman confess in a recent interview that she and her teenage friends registered fake profiles on Tinder. They would obsessively spend all their lunchtimes and breaks comparing how many matches and likes they'd received. The secretive thrill of their game. And, yes, testing their attractiveness and desirability on an adult digital platform. She said they kept it as a game, and noone met up with a match. Still .... /I wonder whether parents could be offered skill sessions for some of the vulnerabilities and challenges their young teen students, and their friends, may encounter. The language this teacher used in text messages is disturbing beyond words . The lead cop was on the school board of trustess , Geesh. . As for the Teachers council , all they did was bar him from teaching . The Coroners court has little if no effect .All the Coroners court does for the family is put them through the grief and heartache yet again. The court can make recommendations but there is no legislation to enforce any Coroners court decision . .This couple have been let down all along this journey . I truly feel for them indeed :)

Sad story. Such a beautiful deep sensitive girl. I'd noticed majority of young person from suicidal they seem to go with their feeling. If she's just abit older mature she'll always remember how important how much her family loved her this would of never happened. Ofcourse the school teacher he's one big problem.

I didn’t really understand where this school was. At 1 point they said boarding school but I’m not sure if that means she was away at school. Did no one notice that she was spending the night over at his house? If it was a boarding school, shouldn’t they have made sure a dorm mom or someone check the kids? If she was living at home, where/how was she sleeping over or even going to his residence?

does not really say what happened between her and the teacher, was he just listening to her and supporting her or was there actual misconduct? All it said was there was texting none of which they showed was sexual, it said the woman teacher was seen hugging the child. Today its a crime for a teacher to hug a child. Im more curious about the parentsvrole in all this, why the girl felt she had to go to teachers fir support and encouragement instead of her parents? When I was a 5th grader I had a really hard time at home and with my mom who never liked me, I used to show up at school hungry with dirty clothes and snarly hair, I didnt hardly speak. My teacher who was a young well to do woman in her 20s used to invite me over to her house for the weekend sometimes. I would sleep over there and clean up, I learned how to use a toothbrush and my hair was brushed and one time she even bought me new jeans, I remember that, I never had new clean clothes before. I used to just go around with her in the city and we would do stuff like go to the city park. One of her hobbies was black and white photography and she showed me how to operate a camera and we would develop the photos in a public darkroom in the city. It all sounds a little creepy but it was all perfectly innocent and this was just a genuine young woman who cared about children. The photos were just of us wearing silly hats and normal stuff like that. There was never a suggestion of anything creepy and her caring was and the time spent in a clean enviroment were some of the few bright spots of a truly awful and neglected childhood. This was in the 1970's. Now everything is criminalized but most people especially teachers are actually caring and its the predators and criminals who are quite rare.

These teachers were trying to help her. The parents are not seeing how they were not understanding and by blaming the teachers they pushed their daughter further to the brink and when they were successful in cutting the teacher out Reiha takes her life. Couldn't they see the creative daughter that was so different that they then blamed her by blaming the teacher. That pushed her over the edge. Heard and seen this before. I think it was despicable blaming the teachers for their own mess (parents)

Now a young teenage girl has taken her life and her parents are left to grieve. Her parents have been transparent during the interview, but where is Back to explain his folly.
