@@silasarpagaus3520 But that "free" episode is only a percentage of the total experience and unacceptable as a completionist if hooked after the first, so technically those extra "optional episodes" are actually worse than the "optional currency purchases" because at least theres a free way to get the same currency for FREE opposed to a complete bait-n-switch scenario with those episodes.

The Devil's breakdown on dopamine problems and the dangers of seemingly harmless addictions, like gaming or porn, is genuinely informative and could help actual people.

This was apparently a response to one of their own earlier episodes, “Bloody Mary.” When Jimmy tells Stan to invoke a higher power, and Stan chooses Satanism/Scientific Understanding, they’re essentially saying AA isn’t a cult anymore, and might be valid for some people, even though it wasn’t for them.
And when Randy keeps insisting he already quit, they’re mocking the end of that episode, where the learned-today speech was about how addiction was just a willpower problem, and discipline was all it ever takes to enjoy in moderation.
I used to work for a call center for a cellphone carrier. A 26000$ bill for micro transactions was entirely possible. This was also the era of data caps, text message limits, and massive roaming charges for simply using a tower of another carrier and not noticing a tiny symbol change. There were absolutely no warnings if you were going to have a charge until it showed on the bill and 90% of the time we had to give them whatever 800# showed in our system that the charges originated from. I had to tell people I wasn't allowed to help them with an obviously predatory practice and there weren't blocks or restrictions of any sort for multiple years. Never put money into any phone game for any purposes as they are usually based on another country and won't follow US laws.
Every time I had to use my mobile data I always kept an eye on it just in case it decided to switch to Roaming. If I stay in a certain city or town I knew it was okay for the most part. But other places farther out than those particular places not so much. The minute I see it Roaming I just turn that shit off immediately.
In case you're wondering I've always been a lifelong Android/Tracfone user. The mobile data comes from a small device (from another phone carrier) I carry around with me if I'm out on the town somewhere.
Ive dropped money on some mobile games that rebranded and went region locked and lost the accounts with them just saying theres nothing we can do even if the transactions are still im my accounts history
@@BrokieTheJokie I've definitely dropped money on a mobile game too. It really was addictive to the point I would panic a little if I've missed one of my times to check in and play it 😭. I eventually did stop playing it, and now it's probably been a few years now since then.

In Bloody Mary we are presented with the idea that Alcoholism isn't a disease and that you just need some "discipline".
This episode gives us a more nuanced view of addiction with a genetic component to it and entire industries built around exploiting your addiction.
Both can be true honestly, but the revised exploitation of addiction problems is a great revision.

Not trying to be a hater but I've played magic yugioh and pokemon and never heard that? Yea you gotta be of fairly reasonable means to keep up in a competitive constructed environment (able to spend 200-500 dollars every few months, I know sneakerheads that triple that on shoes), but limited environments are pretty cheap to play in and are mostly skill based. And, if you're playing in a constructed environment, everyone else has competitive decks anyways so it's not like your money bought you an advantage. You're pretty much only ever competing with people who have similar means as you, so even if you're playing in a legacy style format with all the old cards, everyone else has all the expensive stuff too!
@@SJNaka101 The issue you have is when standard rotates, and your old cards are now useless in the new standard and you need to get the new ones again, constantly.
@@beanthelegume yeah for sure. I'm not trying to be combative, but I did mention the 200-500 dollars every few months to keep up with standard. I'm not trying to say it's a cheap hobby, I'm just saying it's not really pay to win if everyone else also paid. At that point it's just pay to play.

As someone who's a semi professional pretentious person it really varies. Lower end wine tastings you're supposed to spit it out but most don't, middle tier tastings you spit it out, for high end most just drink it.
In mexico I remember there was some facebook game of a famous tv show. You can play for free and level up but after a few hours you are forced to pay with IRL money or else everything you worked at gets deleted

This episode hits for me, pretty sure it’s the reason I dropped mobile games altogether lol. I had a serious issue with blowing my money on wheel spins, pack openings, etc., but at least it was always my own money. My brother did the Stan method though, he ended up spending $500-$1000 from our parents’ credit card on FIFA or NFL packs before they noticed. Bro had it rough for a lil bit after that one😂

So many of China's and Korea's biggest game companys have freemium/gotcha games, hoyo verse, creators of Genshin Impact make something like $100 million a month on their slow months and have made like $250 million on their really successful months, easily over a billion a year. Thanks guys I had never seen this episode before, and watching this reaction inspired me to finally uninstall an app I'm sure I've sunk way too many pointless dollars into over the course of multiple years. I was astounded over and over at how brilliantly the South Park creators illuminated the abusive tactics of these companies. I found myself nodding in acknowledgement every time they described the strategy behind the games design.

I know people who got hooked on F2P games with good money were spending a few grand a month. Like I played Voyage Century online and was in guild with richest guy on the server he owned a chain of computer repair stores at time and his wife died to cancer so he just went all in and dropped insane amounts into the game to feel special and better... And another guy I gamed with wasn't as bad he was CEO he made a start up sold it off, then got hired to be a CEO of another company played Dayz with him but he spent about 4 grand maybe more on Star Citizen at the time.

This episode is all facts. I'm an addict (in almost every way you can be), and I spent $400+ on The Simpsons Tapped Out. Spent various small amounts over time, and then $400 in one purchase. And the worst part is that I still couldn't afford everything in the game, so i stopped playing.This episode made me feel dumb, but also made me feel a little less bad about it. Haha

I saw a documentary about how those garbage game ads and the terrible fremium games specifically target and make the game just the right kind of boring to hook the whales who have a ton of time and will get hooked and put in multiple thousands on their game. Since they can just put in the tiniest thing from the commercial they technical didn't break the law of false advertising, so they make millions and millions with zero consequences while making it harder and harder to find fun games to play.

This episode I'm pretty sure was very specifically a response to the Simpsons Tapped Out mobile game. It's the same gimmick, where Springfield is destroyed and the Simpsons bring everyone back to life by buying their house back using pink Homer donuts as a currency. There were a lot of stories about kids running up their parents' CC bills buying those stupid donuts. The cost of buildings and furniture was insane. Like 5 dollars worth of donuts just to unlock Moe or something.
Satan being this wholesome and explaining stuff makes perfect sense if you member Lucifer means Bringer of Light as in wisdom.

Game actually has some good music, but generally I play it everyday while either listening to something else or waiting in line somewhere while I'm out. It feels so weird, now that I watch RUclips more than I watch TV, everything gets bleeped except the "F" word, which nobody cares about. When I was a kid growing up and watching South Park on TV, it was basically the exact opposite. That was the only word you couldn't say on late night TV.

I remember Simpsons Tapped Out was perfect for me as I only played it on the tram to work and then 12 hours later on the way back. Meaning waiting 12 or 24 hours for something to build was fine and over the next year I got/did everything without paying a penny. However Dungeon Keeper Mobile can go f itself as that was ridiculous and sleazy.

If yall wanna see probably the best Satan episode go with "Hell on earth 2006". Can't remember what season it's in but it's one of those.
The game Star Citizen kinda does this with their space ships. Since the game is still technically not a finished game, they will update parts of the game or do fixes and then have to reset all the servers. When that happens, all the ships you bought with just the game money disappears and you're back to the only ship that was part of the purchase of the game. If you want to keep all the ships, then you have to really buy them from their store. The ships are actually in the hundreds of dollars a piece, which is ridiculous. Imagine if you spent thousands of dollars on ships and the game folds, you're out all that money with nothing to show for it. It's just insane.

Kyle and Cartman are the smartest among the four children but they are at the opposite ends of the good and evil spectrum. Stan and Kenny are there in the middle of the smartness level with Stan being the average normal dude and Kenny being the more eccentric one.
