I have an A Zildjian 16" medium thin crash I bought in the early 80's that has been my favorite from then to this day. For me it has the perfect combination of explosiveness, quick decay and overall musicality. That said, your 19" Meinl sounds great! I've heard several Meinl Byzance crash cymbals lately that have really impressed me. I've always leaned toward Zildjian and Sabian but I am seriously considering adding a Meinl crash to my kit

I like the medium thin traditional crash a little more than the sand…I have a byzance 20” extra thin hammered crash that sounds pretty similar to your medium thin and to my ears it’s definitely the perfect sounding crash imo…this video might have convinced me to get that same crash to go with my 20”

very interesting topic. As a relatively new drummer, during lockdown in 2020 I played drums a lot by myself, and got drawn to darker cymbals as they felt good near-field and worked in that simple context. As I then joined bands and played gigs in a mix of venues, I started to realise I needed brighter, more cutting cymbals in those rooms, in those more dense mixes. But hehe, my ears, near-field behind the kit initially hated the brighter cymbals! I took a lot of self convincing, recording myself far-field to tell myself that I needed to change my preference. This is still a thing, those early preferences are deeply stuck in me, and I have to sometimes still force myself to take a bright pair of hats to a pub gig because there are not microphones and the room is large.

Nothing better than finding that one perfect piece of gear.
For me, it's gotta' be the Byzance 18" Dual crash. Thin as hell, immediate, and with such a fast decay. It explodes as soon as you hit it, and then, before you know it, it's gone. These characteristics work together to make it the most articulate crash I have ever played. I didn't even know that's what I wanted out of a crash before I had experienced it. Now I can't imagine going back.
Big shout out to the vintage, extra dry thin, and extra thin hammered crashes too, though. All beautiful as well.

Ive played The 16” med thin for 10 years in many different styles of bands, including Blues, rock, Metal and even pop electro. To me it was my “Can’t go wrong accent crash” Above the hi hat. it matches perfectly with the 19” on the right. Together they can be so musical and expressive it’s impossible for me to look past them. Amazing series of cymbals 🤪

That's a beauty for sure. I've come to find for me, that I'm drawn to a certain range in gram-weight for crashes, ...most of what I'd consider my 'sweet spot' is between 1500-1700 grams. And just like this 19 in this video, that crash between bright and dark works best, that 'whoo-EEeshhhh', amost starts dark, but opens up on a higher note.

I don't have them anymore, as I moved up to 16s, but I used them with a 21" AAX RBDR and 18" & 19" AAXplosions.

Meinle cymbals are well made, and alot of people seem to like them. I don't because Meinle cymbals kinda sit in the background, and tend to "blend" with the drums. They don't jump out at you and grab ya like a Zildjian custom A, or even more so a Sabian AAX would. Every time I hear the Meinl Traditionals out of a line up, others sound good or great or nice, but the Traditionals just sound extremely satisfying. Like "good job, that's exactly what I wanted".
How is the durability of the Meinl Byzance Traditional Med Thins? I had an 18 K Series Dark Medium Thin Crash that I probably bought in 2008, and it just only cracked. I used to be dumber about stick technique and backed off the cymbals a bit and swipe more, but have always been more into heavier drumming, so 15+ years is amazing ROI on a crash. I was thinking of hunting for a Meinl Trad 19 Med Thin crash, but I just want to make sure it's not going to break my heart and crack in 4-5 years.

Did you hit the kick at the same time? I understand that this is almost a reflex-most crash hits do have a simul kick hit in actual music. It's kind of a cliché, and if done all the time is pretty boring.
But this is supposedly a demonstration of the sound of a cym, isn't it? That means the sound of the crash is not really the sound of the crash in your demonstration. It's the sound of both. That makes it difficult to judge the inherent low end of this cym.
A spectrum analyzer reveals peaks at 40 and 120. Crash cyms typically don't have peaks below about 230 or so. This means the sound demonstrated likely also has a beater click in it.

Yes after going through about 15 or so different rides, all but one cymbal is meinl and that is my Zildjian Constantinople 22” medium thin low ride. Thats the sound, stick definition that rides just over the wash, the wash doesn’t grow out of control, it has a shelf. And final a glorious crash. It has a bit of shimmer over a bit darker and slightly trashy decay that tapers off at just the right rate.

So what you're really saying is, "this is the best alloy for crash cymbals that I've ever heard and used".
And yes, Meinl has come a long way since the 1990's. As they should. The only problem I have with them is that they can be competitive against existing offerings in their CC and CCD lines, but they completely jump the shark on their Pure Alloy and Pure Alloy Custom lines by pricing those cymbals at the same price point as the Paiste 2002 and even some of the Signature models. They're going to lose that fight 9 out of 10 times or greater when you factor in the Paiste build model for cymbal consistency.

    • @ColeParamore
      @ColeParamore  Год назад +1

Not exactly. Alloy is one piece of the puzzle, but very much only a piece. In the case of this particular crash, it's the alloy, manufacturing, and unique variables that created this exact cymbal. But what I'm REALLY discussing is the uniqueness of cymbals and how we can gravitate towards different sounds.

I DO NOT agree 100 percent. The best Crash Cymbal selection depends on what type of Music GENRE you play !
If the genre is Blues or Jazz, I prefer the Crash Cymbal to be a Zildjian K-Series.
If the genre is Hard Rock, Metal or Heavy Metal, i prefer the Sabian AAX and HHX series also available options are the Zildjian ZBT and TURKISH RAW and APEX series.

😂 A traditional crash? Seriously? That's about as standard issue as cymbals get.

Hey Bilboy, thanks for chiming in. I totally agree that cymbal choice is, largely, context-dependent. Despite the somewhat clickbait-y title, you'll notice that within the first few seconds I explain why I don't literally believe this to be objectively the best crash in the world. Hope that makes sense!
