That's sad. My now ex-partner was a drummer and she and I enjoyed watching these videos together. On the hand...she wasn't too happy about my constant G.A.S. problem! She was content with an ancient crappy CB 700 kit that was new back in the mid 1970's!
I'm a long-time SABIAN truther who ALMOST made the switch to Zildjian because of the K Sweet line. Having owned a 23" K Sweet Ride in the somewhat recent past, in my opinion, it was a touch too thick to crash on. Maybe it's because I play with 5As, and needed thicker/heavier sticks? I also never played a 21" like what is shown in this video. The bell, and bow of the cymbal are great though, I'd have no issues using the K Sweet Ride in a rock/hard rock/metal situation if I didn't have any better options. The K Sweet Crashes on the other hand? Garbage. I immediately looked for other options, and found myself back in SABIAN's sweet embrace with the HHX Complex series. It's really a night and day difference. The 22" HHX Complex Thin Ride might be the most versatile cymbal I've ever played. I play in a local classic rock cover band, so it sits great in the mix for that type of music, and it crashes so buttery smoothe that I let it double as my right-side crash during gigs.
The first Istanbul and ANY of the Meinl's for the win. WOW! I even liked them over the Paiste's and that's rare for me. Although that Big Beat was shimmery and lovely.
The best washy ride that I've ever played is the 20" AA El Sabor by Sabian. I don't know why they no longer make them, but I LOVE mine. The bell is nice and cutting, due in part to it being unlathed. The bow is nice and defined, and because the edge transitions to being quite thin with a slight downward curve to it... it washes and crashes fantastically. Most versatile ride/cymbal that I've ever owned.
I genuinely love low tuned TAMA drums...especially the birch with Evans hydraulic heads.. So ridiculously low and punchy. I feel like I'm playing the cannons.
One of the few videos where every single cymbal compared for me is almost tied. All really fantastic, can't even really choose a favorite, only one I wasn't a fan of was the Paiste masters. It was also cool to see underdogs like Wuhan and Bliss get some recognition. Istanbul 20" Traditional>>Sabian 21" HHX thin>>Zildjian 21" K>>Paiste 21" big beat>>Sabian 22" HHX>>Dream 22" bliss>>Meinl 22" Vintage>>Wuhan 21" thin>>Meinl 22" Byzance Dual>>Paiste 22" masters
Standouts for me were Zildjian K Sweet, Sabina HHX 21 and Dream Bliss (which I own and is fabulous). These all had crash/washy goodness but also clear bell definition ✌🏻
The K Sweet ride and Sabian HHX thin brilliant sounded the best to me. Which is good, because the K Sweet 21" is my regular ride cymbal :) Never really thought of using it as a crash ride, but it's definitely all round enough to do that too. Love it.
The K Sweet Rides are basically big crash cymbals that have a usable bell and a pleasing middle of the road stick sound with a pleasant controllable wash.
Great videos you guys put out. Mel Lewis once said that you should have cymbals that you can ride and crash on. That way if you just have two cymbals it would be like having four on the kit.
Really impressed by this Wuhan :o ! I used to have 3 Wuhan's Chinas, all sounded amazing, but each broke after 6 months of use ... Compare to that my Paiste PST5 sounds worse, but i have this since 2004, this cymbal is unbreakable huhu
Maybe it is the rough times, and I unfortunately don't have a drum set right now. But, I honestly would be happy owning any of these cymbals. There really isn't a bad one in the bunch. All great choices. Great video.
☑️ Yeah, there are a couple that would make slightly better crashes than rides, but none of them sounded bad. Normally there's at least 1 cymbal in these comparison videos that I don't like. But not here. I'm SURE all this consistent goodness will be _balanced_ _out_ in the next hi hat comparison video, where there will be 3 or 4 out of 10 that I definitely don't care for...... 😕
This, that K sweet is my favorite in here but that HHX Complex would be if it had a liiiiiittle more bell to it. Not gonna lie, I was actually disappointed with the Meinl cymbals. The Dual was pulling on me with the unique wash up until he smacked the bell and there was none.
Hi Guys!!! Thank God for the internet, ehyyyy!!??!! Meaning, that in order to get little snipits of several different Ride/Crash cymbals like you guys just did, sure beats the alternatives of buying sight unseen from a "Craigslist"/ newspaper ad, OR as it once was...!! And that is, hitting every music store for a hundred mile radius and hoping they had "that C/R cymbal" you want, only to find out that they do, but it is USED and Wayyyyy over priced, like my band and I are supposed to pay the rent on the stores "prime" location!! 😳🤣 I guess there is always the NAMM show... but after the airfare, hotels and restaurants, plus waiting to the last day for "the right deal" to happen could make for a very expensive cymbal!! BUT SERIOUSLY, I appreciate what you guys have done here by putting several of these little gems under the drumming microscope and presenting several good choices!! HOWEVER, I do have one small request which may represent, oh say, maybe another fifty thousand drummers...🤔 or at least that many!! And that isssssss, give both sides of the proverbial drum stick a chance to share the spotlight!! Do that by using both WOOD tipped and NYLON tipped drum sticks (especially) when showcasing a Ride or a Ride/Crash cymbal, because there is a really big difference in timbre, respectively, with each type of stick!! By using each type of stick, you have drove your own perspective buyer's list up by fifty percent...... I mean, ya know, just saying!! ANYWAY, KEEP ON KEEPING ON BROTHER ROCKERS!!!!! PEACE 🤘🏼!!!!!
Good comparison but I think a volume 2 of this could easily be in order as there are plenty more actual crash/rides to be reviewed; Zildjian A and K crash/rides, Paiste RUDEs and 2002 mediums, etc. "Crashable" rides would be a great topic for it's own video!
The Crash/Ride is probably the toughest cymbal to choose. It has to have a good ride sound but still possess a nice crash sound & wash when you crash on it. The bell sound still has to be present too.
I've listened to this without watching and the K Sweet was my pick out the selection presented here. It's not in the video, but probably a 20" Paiste Giant Beat Multi would have destroyed the competition.
Hello greetings from Iquique Chile, hopefully some day they would do a review of small snares or piccolos, there are a lot of side snares or extra snares that are not very well reviewed, 10 x 6,13 x 3, 14 x 3, etc. Thank you very much and keep up your excellent videos.
To me is the K Sweet, then the HHx Complex and then the HHX Thin. All sounded really good but for my needs definitely those. Looking forward to buy the K 😎
Seems people love the underdog cymbals these days. Trash can lids seem to be pretty popular now days. The zildjian K sweet has a nice mix of trash and crash but at least it still sounds like a cymbal. Lovely stick definition. I wasn’t surprised to see the top comment in favour of the zildjian. I recently bought an oriental crash of doom 20” to use as a crash ride. I gave in to the trashy cymbal craze. They sound great with music
Shocked at how good that Wuhan sounded. I don't think I've heard anything but their chinas, I'm impressed. I also loved the Dream, but prefer the Vintage Bliss.
I'm quite fond of the Wuhan traditional. It's literally all I play, mostly for budget reasons (cheapest hh b20 on the market so i rep them hard). I will say Wuhan does lack a decent bell. It crashes very nicely. Has dark crunchy trashy characteristics. But I'm now looking at wanting to trade up on my primary set. For the price though, Wuhan has treated me very well.
@drinkinouttacups2665 yeah Stagg isn't is as cheap as they once were, but they are also more consistent than Wuhan. However they do sheet and cast, where Wuhan traditional, as far as I'm aware is all cast. I dunno about 457 or whatever that line is called, but I know they aren't b20.
Do you find the rivets to be too much? Or were you just wanting more of a traditional sound? I’ve been eyeing the riveted crash ride for a while and im curious your experience with it…
All of my Istanbul Agop rides are also excellent crashes. If the ride doesn’t crash, I won’t put it on the stand. Current line up on my kit is 21” special edition jazz ride, 22” 30th anniversary and 20” 30th anniversary

I have owned 5 meinl and cracked 2 ( I play ligh). Super inconsistent in weight within the cymbal itself (always crooked on the stand / hat clutch). That’s why they crack. Paiste big beat in 24”. Winner if you had it in the shoot off.
I personally liked it all sabians. Very good crisp sound as a ride and very good bell in the center. But I believe they are more pop and Rock music style. K sweet ride would also be my choice if I was a jazz player

Guys. What about the Sabian AA Bash Ride? Or the AAX/HHX Omni ride? True crash/ride cymbals. Pretty much everything here except the K Sweet ride was just a really big crash.
Drum Center intro music starts, I smile. Wife shakes head and leaves room. Never change, guys. 🤟🏼

Hahaha, Just the same here, dude...
Me too! 😂😂 Rock on! DC
Zildjian K has best combination of bell ping, clarity of stick attack, but great wash on the crash! HHX wasn’t bad either.
Agreed. The K Sweet Ride was the most musical cymbal of the bunch.
I would say that the HHX has better bell clarity compated to the the K. Zildjian (and I'm z BIG K. Zildjian fan/owner)!

Right, and their affordable too
The first Istanbul and ANY of the Meinl's for the win. WOW! I even liked them over the Paiste's and that's rare for me. Although that Big Beat was shimmery and lovely.

K sweet ride for me, love the bell on that one in addition to its crash/ride abilities
Paiste masters 22" 🏆
Holy shit, the Wuhan is amazing, especially for the price
Biggest surprise of the entire video, for me.
I bet their life is like 1 week
Played a wuhan for 30 min, broke it.
Wuhan B20 alloy. Ten years and 0 problems. Broke more medium thin Zildjians than any other.
Sounded like a trash can lid.
The Istanbul for me.
LOVE Istanbul Agops. 22" traditional dark ride is hands down my fav crash ride. Only cymbal I need.

You can't go wrong with a Paiste 2002 Medium cymbal. Both for crash and ride. The thing is just buttery and fits well with any type of music, AFAIC.
Byzance also caught my attention, great sound for contemporary worship

Just use a large crash cymbal as a ride.
It doesn't have to be labeled as a ride or crash/ride to be used as a ride.
