Great reaction👍, the instrument played by Jimmy Page is a Gibson double neck 18 string guitar (the top neck is a 12 string guitar & the bottom neck is a regular Gibson LesPaul 6 string electric guitar). The instrument accompanying the guitar and vocals at the beginning is in fact a synthesizer imitating a flute and it is played by the bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones. If you notice throughout the beginning there is no bass because he's busy on the keyboard and there is also no drums wich is rare in a song by a hard rock band. I believe the song first appeared on their fourth album in 1971 so 50 years ago. The album was untitled but it's commonly called Led Zeppelin IV. The first three being officialy titled Led Zeppelin I, II & III. As a teen they were my favourite band and I was supposed to see them live, as their first show of their North American tour was scheduled for October 17th, 1980 in my hometown of Montréal, Québec, Canada. On September 24th, 1980 Led Zeppelin had their last rehearsal in preparation for the tour, to be followed by a three week vacation before the show in Montréal. During that day the drummer of the band, John Bonham drank a large amount of Vodka, as it was his daily habit. Unfortunately, the morning of September 25th his wife Pat Phillips found him dead. He was 32 and left his wife Pat, a son Jason aged 14 and a daughter Zoé aged 5. In October the autopsy and inquest revealed the cause of death as an accidental death, during his sleep and after midnight, due to pulmonary aspiration (vomitting and choking by breathing in the vomit into his lungs), it also revealed that during his last 24 hours he had consumed 1,4 litres of 40 % Vodka but no other drugs. The tour was cancelled and in December, 1980 after an 11 year existence Led Zeppelin announced that in honour of John's memory and by respect for him and his remaining family members that Led Zeppelin was disbanding and would never tour again as Led Zeppelin. 40 years has past since and Led Zeppelin is still in the top 5 bands having sold the most albums alongside The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. John's and Pat's daughter Zoé is a singer/songwriter who appears at Led Zeppelin conventions and their son Jason is a drummer who played with the bands Black Country Communion, UFO, Foreigners and Bonham. On 15th May, 1988 Led Zeppelin reunited for a five song set as the last act of Atlantic Records 40th anniversary Show at Madison Square Garden in New-York city. Led Zeppelin members was formed of the three remaining members Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Paul Jones (bass/keyboard) and Jason Bonham (drums). The four of them reunited again at the O2 arena on December 10th, 2007 for their only full length concert in the 40 years since John's death. So every single concert that Led Zeppelin performed since the creation of the band in 1969, a Bonham was at the drums. 2nd haha. Love ur reactions hannah, but believe me led zeppelin r probably top 3 best rock bands EVER they won awards for that. Also they r from London and were huge in the 70s and 80s.
Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band ever. If you’re a fan of music. You should listen to more of their songs. Their musical diversity is unbelievable
Glad to see a new generation experience this legendary music... It's almost like hearing/seeing it again for the first time!! BTW.... good effort trying to "hide" your reaction around 5:38..... It's ok.... We ALL (guys and girls both) noticed "It" the first time we saw this concert too......You're human.... And honestly, I'm sure a lot of people were waiting to see if you'd react to "that" as well as the performance!! ;) Your little smirk and giggle was adorable! Keep it real... that's what it's all about! Peace.....
Led Zeppelin used the mobile studio unit of the Rolling Stones, another band formed in London. John Paul Jones played the mellotron keyboard on the flute setting. Two years before, Paul McCartney played it in his and John Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. In the studio version, JPJ plays bass guitar. In live concerts, JPJ does not; he plays bass pedals as the substitute. The organ, synth or keyboard acts as a substitute for a guitar.
I was lucky enough to be given a ticket to see them at Earls Court in 1975. I had a bedsit next to the Earls Court centre and a guy was selling tickets by Warwick Avenue tube station and had pity on me as i couldn't afford a ticket
And if you wish to hear this band doing blues(the birth music to jazz and then to rock) you must listen to "You Shook Me." It will knock your socks off. It use so many tie-ins to blues, but also gospel. A real treat for your ears and senses.
The guitar is a double neck guitar one of them has 12 stings and the other has the normal 6 strings. This song uses both a 12 sting and a 6 string guitar so he just got a double neck one made
I agree with your take on music. Even though my favorite is classic rock since it was the music I grew up with I have about a 1000 songs on my phone ranging from the 60’s to present day and I like it all. Great reaction. Cheers!
Double neck guitar. "Instrument moments" as you said were pretty common in this era and still today with bands that play this style. Rock and progressive rock bands with roots and influences from the 1960s and and 1970s still have these moments. Also, Led Zeppelin does have catchy songs with chorus and verse and chorus and verse so you'll find some of their songs like that.
The double neck guitar Jimmy page the guitarist had made specifically for this song and this performance. The top neck is a 12 string and the bottom neck is a 6 string lead.
I was around back then and Led Zeppelin was the best period. They defied the traditional " hit songs " records and just put it out there. They were not as crafted like it or not.
How Stairway to Heaven was written. This is a link to James Patrick Page explaining his thoughts on the composition. ruclips.net/video/DDo4CA13LbY/видео.html He refers to Johann Sebastian Bach having an influence. Incidentally Bach's music was largely forgotten or not performed for many years after his death. I myself think the song follows a similar progression of the music to Maurice Ravel's "Bolero".

Ok Hannah, here's what ya do. Now that you have experienced Led Zeppelin performing Stairway to Heaven you need to see the video of Heart ( Ann and Nancy Wilson) performing Stairway to Heaven in front of Led Zeppelin at the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors. It will blow you away. Thanks beautiful. I just subscribed.
My favourite Led Zeppelin song. A hip hop guy does a fairly decent remix to this song, best I could compare the rap to. Is Columbine masacre Fun fact, they almost got sued for this song. The judge told them to play the first few notes. They did. The judge dropped the court case.
The Guitar is a double kneck made by Gibson Guitars for Jimmy Page. The top kneck has 12 strings which produces a much fuller twangy sound while the lower kneck has 6 strings. There is a lever to switch between the two.
Excellent! Stairway to Heaven is an epic classic! I'm glad you try not to research too much before doing a reaction. Makes it all more organic and interesting...
Ok first, the Flute sound in This is John Paul Jones on Syth.keyboards! And Jimmy Page is Playing a Double Neck Guitar!! But on the album track, in stead of Keyboards the Flute sound is actually someone playing the Pan Flute
IMHO, this version of STH is the absolute best. I've heard Zeppelin live tracks for years covering every major tour, so I know what I'm talking about. The earliest versions of STH (BBC Sessions) sounded tentative and guarded and the ones from 75-79 were okay; but Page often missed the mark and the solos seemed to ramble on too long and lost steam along the way. But in 73; Zeppelin were at their performing peak and this version of STH starts slowly but then picks up a head of steam and just pummels you into submission by the climax. Everyone seems to hate the Song Remains The Same versions; but I love them. The sound balance is perfect; you can hear an electricity in the air and the vibrations of Bonham's snare drum leaks everywhere - the vocals, drums and guitars share equal billing in the mix and create a sonic assault on the brain. Page's solo here is transcendent; it takes you on a journey of hope and optimism and is perfect in every sense; just enough improvisation and also sticking to the original's songs form.
Jimmy Page is playing what is known as a double neck guitar. The top part has twelve strings and the bottom part has six strings. It is to get different tones and you can tell on the softer lighter parts of the song he is playing the 12 string and then in the solo he'll switch to the standard 6 string. As someone who grew up with this music I just love your reaction and thoughts and how you can appreciate lasting classics of the past. ;)
@@Hannahhh It's not much harder than playing a single guitar to be quite honest. The 12 string in a sense is tuned just like a six string but each major sting [just as a normal six string] has an accompanying minor/lighter gauge string that is harmonically tuned to it's major string, and is placed right next to each other. so essentailly it feels like a six string but covering a wider part of your finger tips. All the double neck is doing is having you to not have to physically change guitars in the middle of a song but rather having both guitars already on you for quick transitions, kind of like how keyboardists has different keyboards stacked together. The band Rush uses these a lot in their live shows where the guitarist has a same setup and the Bass player/singer also has a double neck but on his the top is a standard 4 string Bass and the bottom is a standard 6 string guitar,,, now THAT is a bit different in being two completely different instruments in one.
Hard to go wrong with Zeppelin. I would also suggest other bands around that time frame like the group "Rainbow" and "Deep Purple". Stargazer and Child in Time are classics.
Necks, those two things are necks ... And re your comment regarding enjoying music where there is extended instrumental 'breaks' you could check out : 1. The great gig in the sky 'Pink Floyd 2 . 20th Century Schizoid Man 'King Crimson' 3. Wish you were here 'Pink Floyd'
If you liked this, as a fan of Zeppelin for 50 years now, try the Ocean, Dazed and Confused Moby Dick from this same concert, Good Times, Bad Times, D'yer Maker, Immigrant Song live 1972 and Kashmir that'll keep you occupied for a bit.
Before I was STRICTLY "Classic Rock". Then youtube came along, and "down the rabbithole" I went. Like you were saying classic stuff or newer stuff....good music is good music. Here's one for you from a Metal Core band called Spiritbox. Their music is pretty hardcore, and then you have "Constance". If you decide to react to this, be prepared.
Jimmy Page is considered one of the greatest guitarists ever in rock history. Believe it or not, there is a video on YT of him playing in a skiffle* band in 1957, when he was only 13 years old, on a popular TV show back then (he's the guitar player on the left): ruclips.net/video/ewNLaBhPRY8/видео.html After he finished school he became a session guitarist for some recording studios in London up until 1966; when he became a member of the band The Yardbirds. Not long after he joined, the band got to make an appearance in a famous Michelangelo Antonioni art film called "Blow Up". Fun Fact: When the band dissolved in 1968, Page took control of the band's affairs, got three new members, then played a couple of contractual gigs as The New Yardbirds before they changed the name of the band to Led Zeppelin. Here's the scene they're in, where they play in this psychedelic nightclub; Page is about 22 years old, and is all the way on the left side of the stage. (btw the other guitarist smashing up his guitar in frustration is this other rock guitar legend named Jeff Beck): ruclips.net/video/R18qCKNLQdM/видео.html * = Skiffle was kind of an early precursor to rock & roll that a bunch of 60s bands, including the Beatles, all played when they were kids in the 50s; Kind of a combination of country and folk.
And just in case, Hannahh, you have never heard of a mellotron, it's kind of a forerunner to the synthesizer keyboard. Basically, each key of it is set to a mechanism that plays a tape loop of a recorded sound; so that as player presses a key, the mechanism starts playing this sound tape loop until the player stops pressing the key. Just so happens these are tape loops of a flute sound in this mellotron.
@@penfold7455 this makes a lot of sense now!! So even tho it’s not literally a flute, that’s why it sounds a lot like it I was so confused at first hahah
Think jimmy is playing a double neck Gibson SG, classic cut. top neck is 12 stringed. bottom neck is 6 strings. saves the halting song for him switching guitars. Not easy playing lead guitar on a 12 string, usually a 12 string acoustic guitar is detuned a semi-tone to release the tension on the neck that the extra strings do. i know every note on this track and few others, but dang how good are they.. i could spent weeks discussing Zep and how AWESOME THEY ALL WERE in own right on own chosen insruments but i see you appreciate class when u see/listen to it. ROCK ON.
Request for 70s classics ,i would strongly recommend Gary Wright --Dream Weaver Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter #23 Funkadelic-(Not Just) Knee Deep ..
"Stairway To Heaven" is more than THE antheme of the whole rock history, it's THE revelation at all. Now you have given them your soul and they will never give it you back.
That is a 12 and 6 String guitar combo. You need to see the whole concert film,it was originally released in movie theaters in the 70s along with the album album . When Bonham, the drummer died in 1980 it was the end of the band ,they could not move on because of his unique style.... Robert had a great solo career in the 80s and 90s also and Jimmy did may different things also..Jones was always more in the back ground and never was in the public eye much after that . These two show what it was like after LZ was over with and Robert has a ton of great solo songs ruclips.net/video/jj5nH0O8lmg/видео.html ruclips.net/video/3973tfsllqw/видео.html
It's 2 guitars in 1. The top is a 12 string guitar. the bottom is 6 string. Jimmy needs both for this song. Keeps him from having to change guitars back and forth.

2nd haha. Love ur reactions hannah, but believe me led zeppelin r probably top 3 best rock bands EVER they won awards for that. Also they r from London and were huge in the 70s and 80s.
THE best
Hahah thank you!
Ah, the immortal Led Zeppelin!. Enjoyed your reaction. Very honest!🙂🙂
Thank you!
yes see the passion on his face
Kashmir by Led Zeppelin is a must !! Both studio and live. Talk about a journey
Proof
England does some things
Really really really
Well
Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band ever.
A real treat for your ears and senses.
this was 1973 no silly sound effects just pure music at its best
When I was young
My mother asked me, which one of those guy's is Led Zeppelin lol
Greatest song ever from the greatest band ever led zeppelin
At the start they show John Paul Jones on keyboards playing the Flute sounds. Multi talented band.
Keybord it is!!
Best band ever led zeppelin they truly talented the song is 55 years old there music will never die they were better anybody else
The guitar Jimmy Page used is a Gibson G-1275 Double Neck guitar. Epiphone (owned by Gibson) manufactured the same model.
The guitar is a double neck guitar one of them has 12 stings and the other has the normal 6 strings. This song uses both a 12 sting and a 6 string guitar so he just got a double neck one made
Originally it was recorders used in the studio but live he used the mellotron
you have just witnessed the greatest night in rock and roll history
I agree with your take on music. Even though my favorite is classic rock since it was the music I grew up with I have about a 1000 songs on my phone ranging from the 60’s to present day and I like it all. Great reaction.
Cheers!
Double neck guitar. "Instrument moments" as you said were pretty common in this era and still today with bands that play this style. Rock and progressive rock bands with roots and influences from the 1960s and and 1970s still have these moments. Also, Led Zeppelin does have catchy songs with chorus and verse and chorus and verse so you'll find some of their songs like that.
I think You will like The Rain Song from this same concert
The Song Remains The Same/The Rain Song live 1973!!
The best!!
One guitar has twelve stings, for the melodious pieces at the beginning. Six string guitar for the rock section.
How Stairway to Heaven was written.
This is a link to James Patrick Page explaining his thoughts on the composition. ruclips.net/video/DDo4CA13LbY/видео.html
He refers to Johann Sebastian Bach having an influence. Incidentally Bach's music was largely forgotten or not performed for many years after his death. I myself think the song follows a similar progression of the music to Maurice Ravel's "Bolero".
Never ever pause during a guitar solo EVER !!!!!!!! Plus LED ZEPPELIN is one of the greatest rock band EVER !!!!!!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU HAVEN'T HEAR OF THEM ????? Ever hear of THE BEATLES , THE WHO ! Do you want some CREAM in that drink ! Ask your grandparents about them !!!!!!!!!! PEACE FROM AMERICA !!!!!!!!!! I'm just saying !!!!! You are beautiful !! Love your channel !!! PEACE !
Its not just passion in his eyes...;))
She turned the volumn down during a Jimmy Page solo🙄🤪!!
She's a beginner..... She'll learn.... ;)
@@michaelgilbert197 naa, I am a reactor, I will react 😅
Best British band by far.
I think I remember suggesting this one for you, thought youd like it more than the last one, theres more of an actual structure to it, my friends dad had this playing at his funeral, I'll always remember that
You suggested a great one!! It’s honestly a beautiful song to have played at a funeral
Do a reaction to this----- led zeppelin- in my time of dying(live) -----your welcome
Awesome! Thank you
@@Hannahhh you are very welcome.
Masterclass true Rockstars. Musical wizardry. Their music will live forever. Pink Floyd is right there also. Timeless.
My favourite Led Zeppelin song. A hip hop guy does a fairly decent remix to this song, best I could compare the rap to. Is Columbine masacre
Fun fact, they almost got sued for this song. The judge told them to play the first few notes. They did. The judge dropped the court case.
Yes because it wasn't stolen...Jimmy just being his usual genius self!
Omg! I deffo have to check that out
And :O that’s so crazy, people will literally sue over anything
@@Hannahhh ruclips.net/video/QNh_d3e8LdI/видео.html
That's the hip hop remix.
The Guitar is a double kneck made by Gibson Guitars for Jimmy Page. The top kneck has 12 strings which produces a much fuller twangy sound while the lower kneck has 6 strings. There is a lever to switch between the two.
Hey, I made it here first! That's never happened! Anyway, love your reactions! Watching it now.
Excellent! Stairway to Heaven is an epic classic! I'm glad you try not to research too much before doing a reaction. Makes it all more organic and interesting...
Hahahaha yay! Thank you so much
@@dustinwilson4815 I’m glad you agree 😁🥰
He's playing a double neck guitar and the top neck has 12 strings and the bottom has 6 ❤
Ok first, the Flute sound in This is John Paul Jones on Syth.keyboards!
Until I was in my early twenties and learned that they were British I always wondered why they referred to hedgerows in this song. Lol
You really need to hear Led Zeppelin KASHMIR
Jimmy Page is playing what is known as a double neck guitar. The top part has twelve strings and the bottom part has six strings. It is to get different tones and you can tell on the softer lighter parts of the song he is playing the 12 string and then in the solo he'll switch to the standard 6 string.
As someone who grew up with this music I just love your reaction and thoughts and how you can appreciate lasting classics of the past. ;)
The talent is impeccable! I can’t even play a single neck guitar hahah
And thank you so much🥺🥰
@@Hannahhh It's not much harder than playing a single guitar to be quite honest.
@@artsilva OH that’s interesting, I seee what you mean now
@@Hannahhh The More you Know, as they say hehe...Glad I could help.
You have to do their song "No Quarter" live in Madison square garden. Epic! Long instrumentals!
The flute sound is a keyboard instrument called a mellotron.
One of the best solos ever
Hard to go wrong with Zeppelin. I would also suggest other bands around that time frame like the group "Rainbow" and "Deep Purple". Stargazer and Child in Time are classics.
The top neck is a 12 string guitar, where as the lower neck is a six string. If you watch it clearly he plays them at different times in the Song.
The wood instrument is a keyboard. John Paul Jones is playing them. The best live version of this is from Earl's Court in 75.
Its a double neck guitar with the top having 12 strings and the bottom having the traditional 6 strings
Jimmy is a genius!
Ohh!!
Synthesizer, the flute part. John paul Jones.
dual neck guitar, top neck is a 12 string ,bottom - 6 string.
Believe it or not, there is a video on YT of him playing in a skiffle* band in 1957, when he was only 13 years old, on a popular TV show back then (he's the guitar player on the left):
ruclips.net/video/ewNLaBhPRY8/видео.html
After he finished school he became a session guitarist for some recording studios in London up until 1966; when he became a member of the band The Yardbirds.
(btw the other guitarist smashing up his guitar in frustration is this other rock guitar legend named Jeff Beck): ruclips.net/video/R18qCKNLQdM/видео.html
* = Skiffle was kind of an early precursor to rock & roll that a bunch of 60s bands, including the Beatles, all played when they were kids in the 50s; Kind of a combination of country and folk.
Damn that’s so cooool
Flute sound is JPJ on the Melatron keyboard...while playing bass with his feet!! Guitarist Jimmy Page...greatest of all time!
So even tho it’s not literally a flute, that’s why it sounds a lot like it
I was so confused at first hahah
ROCK ON.
Agree. As long as the music is from the heart and not the wallet. Let Artists create art and the capitalists bugger off.
Request for 70s classics ,i would strongly recommend Gary Wright --Dream Weaver Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter #23 Funkadelic-(Not Just) Knee Deep ..
Led zepplin (over the hills and far away)
"Stairway To Heaven" is more than THE antheme of the whole rock history, it's THE revelation at all. Now you have given them your soul and they will never give it you back.
Studio versions my dear... try roundabout by YES,... the UK 70's bands are unique and will always take you on a mind journey....
Bottom of guitar is a regular 6 strings. Top is a 12 string(double of each)
That is a 12 and 6 String guitar combo.
Am I allowed to wish a reaction to my favorite song? It is Dimmu Borgir - The Mourning Palace. :) Best live at Wacken, because I was there. :) And you did here another great reaction. :)
Of course! Thank you for the suggestion
How can anyone in England never hear of Led Zeppelin
Jimmy Page John Bonham
Robert plant
John Paul Jones
