  • In this , episode 34, DV gets to grips with the new AFR 'Enforcer' BB Chevy heads. Is it as good as AFR claim? Certainly the flow as much and, at some lift points more than AFR claim. however flow figs are not the not the 'be all & end all' of a power development orientated review. But with DV advanced IOP head porting program very close output predictions can be generated. We think you will find this to be about the best RUclips BBC porting video ever but we are also sure that if you disagree you will be quick to let us know.

My father was the first or second guy… it’s a long argument lol. to manufacture a “billet” hemi cylinder head for nitro and alcohol drag racing engines. He was a very out of the box thinker. When most guys where obsessed with ports my father was obsessed with chambers 1st & ports 2nd. These videos for me validate his ideas. I can’t thank you enough for being so open with your proprietary knowledge. I grew up around some of the smartest guys in racing. I’m so thankful they where open books and believed in me. I owe it all to staying busy cleaning and sweeping floors. I pray that the younger generation cares to learn as much as I did. The massive talent possessed by the guys racing in the 60s 70s 80s was unreal when performance was built not bought like now days.

I have the cnc ported version of these heads on my 427 60 over so if he said they can be used on a 555 or 540 then they will be good on a 496 Richard holdner was saying they were only good up to 468 cubic inch I think I'll take David's word over Richard's. I'm glad I seen this.

I learned a few new Porting tricks from You Today David.
Pontiac V8 Large Valve Factory iron heads 2.11" intake & 1.77" exhaust valves equipped 1968-1972 years are pretty well enshrouded from the Factory, always wondered why the deep radius scallop machined fly cuts were present, now know why.
    Improve the flow discharge coefficient.
I will check with different guage balls on the next set of Factory iron heads I port for myself at home.
    Thank You for your videos.

This is the most comprehensive look at properly flow developing a port while most importantly maintaining or increasing velocity that I have ever seen.

That was an information packed hour, thanks DV! I’m wondering about 468/496 vs 509/540. I think your flow results were for a 4.310” bore. The effect of a 4.500” bore would seem to be significant. You mentioned needing to mill the heads for a 454/468 engine. Do you have thoughts or rules about dome shape to get adequate compression? I’ve imagined that a dome biased to fill the intake side of the chamber and put most of the cylinder charge around the spark plug and exhaust valve side would help, but I have no data to support it.

What's up with the segments of Audio missing? Wealth of info on this casting. Bought the KMJ Assault, believe it is the same casting as this Enforcer. Wish they'd have cast the Exhaust port parameter's inward an eighth inch all around leaving port shape to be user defined. D Port into a round tube has more appeal to my sense of logic, they need to change the exhaust casting core sticks. About the nicest as cast Chambers... I've seen.

Goodness me... I keep having visions of how those “Top Fuel” step style ports, that had trellises. Somehow droppletes travel fast at every scale due to the valve seat seal being broken.
Instantaneous seal brake has to be, an in between force.
Because it’s fast.. with very minimal movement.
    Movement being the keyword.
    Sealed.....broken.
    Speed... >speed of sound.

I would suggest breaking a video like this down into 20 minute segments. You will get more views and thus more money for your channel. Also many people won't just fire in on a video over an hour long as that is a big chunk of time from most peoples day. I do really appreciate the tech heavy content like this that you won't find anywhere else. So curious on this package on say a 540cid at 5000rpm what hp difference do you think somebody would see from all this work? I mean if you spin it on up I can see some big gains coming from the work you have done but how close to the feeding needs for 5000rpm do these heads come right out of the box?

AFR maybe getting their foot in the door for all future AFR castings to come out of China. The Pro Maxx head is cast off shore followed by some very elegant machine work in the U.S.A. Always boils down to dollars and you're the un-knowing beta tester for awhile. I had a PRW experience that left me feeling like a beta tester when several of their shaft mount rocker bearings blew the sides out of the cages. (BBC rockers rated @ 750# yield and couldn't take a dozen passes @ 680lbs open) No matter, the average weekend racer is no longer going to be able to afford parts. You get what you pay for... and it ain't much anymore.

At 25:35 you say that taking off more than a minimal amount in that area will cut swirl and flow, because the air will enter the chamber in a direction that opposes the flow from the more cutaway area. I don't doubt that that is true, but my question is; how do you actually know that the air does or would flow in that direction, in that area, given that you can't put a camera in there and actually watch it? Are you simply inferring these facts from swirl and flow data? Also, at high lift, doesn't the air tend to flow almost directly down the bore, rather than perpendicular to it?

Is there some kind of technology or procedure that's similar to ExtrudeHone, but, using high flowing dry media on a port that's been blue'd,.......so whenever the blueing is removed, thats where material should be removed?
It would be great if a system exists to flow an abrasive media for however long of a duration to automatically let it port itself to best flow using "active real time computational fluid dynamics"!
Maybe it does, & an F1 secret!!!!

How about some insight on the parts shortages David and what the solutions are for it in 2022 ?
Been collecting parts for a Super Mouse 454ci SBC Dart M2 Raised cam Tunnel block I am building for a friend with a C4 Corvette Street Racer.
What a nightmare finding parts in 2021 so far. We have 98% parts now, camshaft and lifters and pushrods are left to buy.
Do you have any links to your 454 Super Mouse Mighty Mouse SBC engine ? I am unable to find it online any. It was about 1997-1998 years published in Stock Car Magazine I recall your article.
You also covered the benefits of Titanium valves for Racing use.

Is Eric Weingartner a former porting student of yours DV? I watch his channel also and seems genuinely knowledgeable and good work also.Figured he learned from the Master. Also does widening the short side radius parallel to the valve seat help flow on an intake port?Always good information on this channel no matter what brand or company someone likes,Thanks

No Eric is not a former student but he does seem good at what he does. Yes the porting move you suggest can help but it is far from a slam dunk deal - that is why we have flow benches so we do not have to second guess.

Hi David, I know this is a bit off topic for this video but I have meaning to ask you what you think about the latest designs in cylinder heads using Rotary valves or more like rotary tubes really? Also I remember when I was growing up in Michigan there was a rumor that GM had developed a valve train in which the valves had been opened and closed by electric solenoids, the idea being the ultimate control and adjustability in valve lift, timing, and duration. Thus being the equivalent of having an never ending and always changing combination of what would be the ideal cam shaft profile for every condition. As the story goes GM couldn't figure out a means of generating enough power with the amount of room available to continue with further design and testing. Is there any truth to this story. Do you think the technology exists today to do such a thing? Thanks David, Big fan and cant wait for more 4 valve episodes.

    • @marvingvx1
      @marvingvx1  2 года назад

Mr. Noodleman sir, there are companies who have developed workable electronic valve trains but I think this technology will get swamped by electric motors.

Good video, I looked at these heads, but the chambers are too big for me. I’m building a 502 with the stock L29 EFI intake and a Lunati .544 hydraulic roller cam, I am looking at the FloTek 290 heads with 110cc chambers that are basically knock offs of the AFR 290’s but cast, they look good and run around $800 each. It’s going In my Motorhome with a 4L80e transmission, 14 bolt rear with 4.56 gears and 33” tires, so I’d like 600 LBFT of torque as low RPM as possible for towing an enclosed trailer with my race car. Have you seen those heads in a torque based build?
