  • Tutorial on how to replace the spider gasket on a pool filter multiport valve. Buy gasket for 2" pipe valve here - amzn.to/3mVt2Sk
    The manufacture recommends using a Loctite adhesive that is actually cyanoacrylate (super glue). However, that is a very aggressive glue and is a huge pain to remove the gasket and clean out all the glue when it is time to replace. RTV silicone is a less aggressive adhesive and will be easier to remove when it comes time to replace.

    It was your video that enabled me to figure out the problem I had been having with my pentair multiport valve for over a year!! Thank you.

    I love how the old gasket just popped right out of there. I've never seen one do that, they usually have to be scraped out for an hour

      That's what happens when using RTV silicone to glue it in versus cyanoacrylate super glue as recommended by manufacturer. However, the super glue does keep the gasket glued longer than the silicone.

    Do you drain the filter or shut off external valves to prevent pool or hot-tub water from coming back up into housing once you 'pop the top'?

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  Год назад

      Yes, you need to do something to bring the water level below the valve, otherwise water keeps coming up as you try to replace the gasket.

    can you use a silicone caulk instead rated for bath/kitchen instead? it seems like a pain in the ass to always scrape the old adhesive off if using RTV

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  2 года назад +1

      You will have to scrape some off no matter what. You can give it a try. Cyanoacrylate (Super glue) is the main recommended adhesive, but that seems very aggressive. The main thing the adhesive is doing is keeping the gasket in the slot when you lift the valve. Otherwise the gasket can stick to the valve and lift up with it.

    How soon after you put it back together can you turn the pump on?

      The RTV silicone I used in the video had a cute time of 24 hours, so wait at least that long. If you use cyanoacrylate, it will cure within a few minutes, but it is much more difficult to remove.

    How long did you wait before you put the valve back in service?

    do you really need RTV? - seems original gasket was installed without
    ....#3 Phillips bit would help with bolt removal and replacement

      If you don't glue in the gasket, it's likely to lift with the valve head when you change the settings. The gasket needs to be glued in somehow, and the manufacturer recommends super glue, but that is a pita to scrape out.

    What is the name of a gasket glue (?) that you recommend? Thanks

      Got it

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  11 месяцев назад +1

      I'd recommend super glue instead of the RTV silicone used in this video. The silicone adhesive doesn't last as long, but is a lot easier to cleanup. The adhesive sold for spider gaskets is a cyanoacrylate, which is super glue. It will last longer but is very difficult to scrape clean.

      @@engineerable Thank you. My gasket came out of the groove and got torn up. I’d hate to have scrape off super glue but maybe it’s what I need. Do you recommend re-lubing the top of the gasket yearly maybe?

    I was taught that prior to taking the valve cover off, you should depress, then turn the handle between two positions.

    I’ve been scraping this idiotic gasket for 3 hours already and begging for a different way to do it for my future self. I’ll try your blue glue, cant get worse than this stupid super glue.

      Yes, any of those alternative glues will be better than super glue.
