I still remember the anecdote from the creators of the show when they made X-23. They had a meeting with the writers of the comic at the time to discuss their idea for the character and the writers stared at them and said 'we've been trying to do the same thing for about a year now'.
This is one of the few X men adaptations that treated Scott Summers and Jean Grey with respect. One of the few X men properties that depicted Cyclops as a capable badass leader and didn't portray him as just an asshole or emasculate him to make Wolverine look cooler. And its the only X men show that portrayed Jean Grey as an actual character with a personality and interest instead of just a plot device to drive out Scott and Logan's rivalry.
It does have one of my favourite Cyclops moments ever; when fleeing a military base he traps Mystique behind a door and threatens to leave her there if she doesn’t talk about what she’s done with Xavier. She laughs and calls his bluff… …except he is very much not bluffing and leaves her there. Ultimatum delivered, ultimatum followed through. Calculating and pragmatic without veering into jerkass like some recent Cylops portrayals
Surprisingly enough this iteration of the X-Men utilizes a lot of niche concepts from the X-Men comics. For the longest time I thought Nightcrawler's image inducer was something this show came up with. But it was introduced in the comics in 1975.
Yo rbg! how are you doing man, i never thought I'd find you here. Interesting, i never knew the image inducer was something that originated from the comics, i always thought it was an original creation made specifically for this show, just like X-23.
I like how this series portrays Rogue. For one, they don't give her the flight and strength because the power absorbing is an interesting power all on its own. And I like that she first starts out joining the Brotherhood.
I like Rogue in Evolution just as equally as I like Rogue from the 90s animated show They are literally neck and neck in being the best adaptations of the character
The crew has stated if they had a fifth season like what do the Phoenix arc and would’ve had Scott and rogue end up as a couple. They also wanted to show Professor X meeting magneto and losing his legs because they don’t like the comics version. But there’s one character I wish they had included Polaris mostly to show how magneto traded his three kids in different way, and have her basically be a loving, spoiled, sweet kind of girl, and the best way to show. It is her to use her magnetic powers on her siblings, building it up as their dad doing something terrible, but then calls her siblings two adorable nicknames
This is my favourite version of Charles as he doesn’t seem too old and actually feels like father to the main cast whereas in the movies he felt more like a grandpa And in the 90s animated series he was pretty unlikeable at times and felt cold
Agree this is the best version of Jean and Scott (especially Scott). I think their ages really helped because 1. Being the oldest kids, we get to see them act as leaders even with Xavier present, 2. Wolverine being an adult means no stupid love triangle raking up half their character arcs (Yes, they have other love interests, but it doesn't eat up nearly as much of their personalities as other adaptations)
@@ShadowSonic2Though the sad part is that had the show continued, the triangle would have been solved by killing off Jean at the end of the Dark Phoenix Saga. Something that would have split up the X-Men for several years until the threat of Apocalypse returns, then they would defeat him once and for all with the help of the Eternals.
Now this is the X-Men I grew up with, so many of my favorite versions of these characters, and interesting stories. Definitely an underrated and awesome X-Men incarnation
I like cauldron since the 90’s cartoon did introduce havoc but never addressed that him and cyclops are brothers and they share a scene in cold comfort and they never say anything about being brothers. If not for this episode I wouldn’t have known that they were brothers
one could say of the ending of season one, that magneto emulating the nazis and their ideology either intentionally or accidentally is something of a running theme with him, and his greatest tragedy. He has often become authoritarian if not a fasest in his own right if left to his own devises, leading him to become the thing he hates. Those that stare to long into the abyss may find the abyss staring back at them.
Glad you changed your mind on this show. I think the writers wanted to show how Magneto was slowly becoming the thing he hates & that is why he did the things he did. Not saying it's ideal but I can see why he did it the s1 finale.
I also not a fan of Season 1 finale. I feel that episode could have been better if they had go with Mr Sinister as the villain instead of Magneto, since doing experiments with mutants is more his thing than Erik, plus he and Scott have a backstory in the comics which, if adapted, could tie with the sub plot involving Scott finding his lost brother. However, I don't see Magneto kidnapping mutants being out of character since what makes Magneto such a complex villain is that, while his goals are noble, his methods, the limits he's willing to cross to keep mutantkind "safe" and his ideology of mutant supremacy ultimately turns Magneto into the same monster that took his family from him.
I loved x-men evolution it was really awesome show and really badass in my opinion, also this show introduce my favorite character x-23 aka Laura Kenny who is really awesome and tons of fun in my opinion.
I heard that Mr. Sinister would have been the next threat, but I would like to see other X-Men characters, like Deadpool, Emma Frost, Firestar, Mojo, Ka-Zar, Shanna, Zabu, Sauron, Cable, Psylock, Moira MacTaggert, the Shadow King and the Friends of Humanity.
Thought the first season was a bit rough around the edges but I gotta say from the second season onwards it really picked up. The way they built up to Apocalypse and had him actually kinda live up to that hype was pretty well done
True but I’m okay with the rough first season as it was mostly about building the dynamics between our lead characters and establishing a status quo for half of it.
I remembered when Erod initially dismissed XME as a disney channel/teenager pandering type of show early in his career, even at one point blaming Twilight for inspiring Rogue's Goth look. Glad to see hom giving it a chance after all these years.
most people his and my age dismissed this show, but man its a reeeeeeeeeeeeeal good show and if erod is a true blue comic fan, he would love this show if he gave it a real chance!
Weirdly enough what you point out about Magnetos' Asteroid M plan is something Magneto doesn't realize for himself. He's doing the same thing to others that was done to him.
Like all X-Men shows, Evolution is simply amazing and pushed the franchise forward out of love for what came before and in creating something new to add.
X-Men Evolution is a reimagined love letter while the 90s cartoon focused on being more faithful to the comics. All X-Men cartoons, outside of the failed TV pilot "Pryde of the X-Men", are great. I feel honored to say that I grew up with three X-Men cartoons that never let me down throughout my life. They helped me find myself as a nerd and taught me how to gain confidence. I look forward to X-Men 97 in 2024. I have a feeling that this show is going to wipe its ass with Marvel's woke agenda upon release. And if it does it'll steer Marvel in the right direction, and we could very well have quality Marvel entertainment again. X-Men forever!
Honestly THIS is the X-Men cartoon I watched the most as a kid (well... teen anyway) that really got me into the characters as I think I was either a bit too young for the 90's show or never watched it at the right time to get into the plotlines. Again I do feel though you should like repost up your old "not available anywhere" old honest reviews like the one you did of the 90's show on your patreon. Like it'd be a good way to have more content up without having to do any more work... unless like you can't anymore cause it'd be content IDed or some crap which I'd understand but hope that wouldn't be the case with them.
I thought this show was so cool. Loved when they brought Gambit in, though it was super late in the series.(to me anyway, LOVE Gambit) I honestly wouldn't mind a numerous part series with you talking about this show. Just to make sure you cover EVERYTHING. lol. And... I think I'm the minority that actually likes Boom Boom.
Honestly I love the show granted Wolverine in the X-Men I loved a lot more but I'm just happy that I grew up watching two X-Men shows that in itself is amazing and plus this show helped me when I was starting physical therapy with my whole surgery with my feet long story short I was born with extra toes had them removed at age 9 and it led to me being stuck in a bed for like 6 months and because of that I watched everything on Cartoon Network and I mean everything so the show holds a deer in my heart
i remember erod mentioned he thought this show was real dumb when he first mentioned it during a review on marvel cartoons maybe close to 10 years ago. i hoped he gave it an actual chance this time around and found the pure genius writing in it. personally i grew up on the fox kids 90s x-men cartoon, but this one is better, honestly. even doug walker loves this show after finding it dumb at first!
Excellent video! I grew up with this show and really enjoyed it. I agree it has the best Scott and Jean. I agree that we've never had a bad X-men cartoon series. I may go back and rewatch it after I finish X-men TAS.
Have to say, I'm surprised that Evolution Magneto is your favorite portrayal of him. I thought he was rather cartoonishly evil at points (Abandoning then brainwashing Wanda, making mutants fight eachother for supremacy, inciting mutant hatred, performing mad science experiments on baby Kurt, brainwashing mutants, etc) and lacked a lot of his usual depth to be a generic bad guy
That's simply not true. His intentions were never malicious. We even see the difference between him and Apocalypse. That being that Magneto wants mutants to live in a universal brotherhood and enjoy freedom while Apocalypse wants to kill everyone whom he deems unworthy and rule the world as a god-king. Also, had the show continued, we would have seen Magneto eventually become a good guy.
Something I want to bring up from another channel that covered this show is that the name X-men evolution is such a fitting name as we see these characters evolve from teenagers into the X-men we more associate with them
I liked how storm was portrayed on this show. She was caring and a mother figure. Also, I thought she was pretty well balanced too. Like she was overly powerful however if she would do something it felt powerful.
I'm thinking you missed the female cop telling the girls to knock it off was Mystique who either 1) let them go because of "girl power" and didn't want to hurt them or 2) she didn't want them to be more exposed at that point. Could be a little of both because she was still doing surveillance on them.
Just a heads up, Arkansas is pronounced close to "R can saw". The way you pronounced it is a common mistake for people who don't live here. Love the video. X-Men Evolution was my introduction to the X-Men as a kid and I watched it every Saturday morning on Kids WB so I loved getting your take on it.
Man I absolutely loved this show I really wish it would come back. Maybe someday I mean we got the 97s one returning next year so why can’t we get X Men Evolution return. What do you guys think? What’s your favorite characters from the show and what is your favorite ships or relationships from the series?
There's two characters you forgot to mention that joins the cast later on and that's beast and iceman they start becoming integral parts around season 3 of the series. And I will agree I want to say Ororo Monroe is Milk toats but I think they have to depower her because I wouldn't necessarily call her the token black girl of the X-Men team she's integral part of every X-Men series that's out there It's just that I feel like a lot of the writers are scared to push her because of the fact that she manipulates whether that I think they're afraid of making her look so overpowered that they can't do anything with her and that's such a shame honestly but I wouldn't call the X-Men evolution storm boring though. I will agree like this is from one of the best adaptations of the X-Men and I love the way they can show rogue without her super strength and flight abilities which I thought that was such a plus because the X-Men movies act like they didn't know what to do with the character at all which kind of sucks but X-Men Evolution was like you can do a lot with Rogue and I did enjoy the transformation of Cyclops and Jean Gray into like these leaders of the X-Men and how they didn't push them to the back burner like the movies kind of did you know And I enjoyed the no love triangle or the Phoenix yet which makes sense because she's young I don't think you need that right now and honestly I enjoyed the fact that they gave us an original character with Spike and ex-23 it would be nice to see Spike in the comics though
In the X-Men comics, Jean Grey HATED her code name (Marvel Girl) which is why they only call her by her real name. Also, X-Men Evolution had to come in during a time where Kids WB was dominated by Anime (Poke'mon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Cardcaptor Sakura) with some DC shows sprinkled in (The new Batman/Superman adventures, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, and Teen Titans)
How do you feel what they did to Nightcrawler in the comics recently? They changed his parentage. They made Mystique his father and Destiny his mother. I think they should have left things alone. I like both of his previous parentage better where Mystique is mother and his father is either a Noble man is his father or Azazel is his father. I am someone that likes the relationship Mystique has with Destiny.
@@ShadowSonic2 no the original parentage was that his father is either a nobel man or Azazel which both I am fine with and Mystique is the mother. I hate that that changed it to suit The Message.
@@ShadowSonic2 False. Claremont's original plan for Nightcrawler was to have Nightmare, a Doctor Strange villain and extra-dimensional entity be his father. That parentage was supposed to explain two keys things about Nightcrawler: His appearance and his weird teleportation abilities as the intermediate dimension he would have been going through (like shown in X-Men evolution) was going to be revealed as the Dream Dimension where Nightmare rules over. That was the original idea, that idea was the first to be scrapped and that parentage was supposed to be revealed in the issue where Nightcrawler's backstory was first shown, which, lo and behold, is a Doctor Strange and X-Men Crossover in the 1980's annual. That very issue instead introduced Nightcrawler's adoptive mother, Margali Szardos, who found him as a baby as well as the fact she found him right next to his DYING mother. You can go check this yourself. All of this was revealed through the Eye of Agamotto, which only shows the truth. At the time of that crossover taking place, Nightcrawler's biological mother has been certified dead for 21 years. Only afterwards did we get Mystique and Destiny's introduction into the X-Men plot through Days of Future Past where their stupid actions create a dystopian future with most of mutantkind dead, including Nightcrawler who is one of the first mutants to die after Kelly's assassination. Then 3 years after DoFP, Claremont revealed through elaborate prose Mystique's birth year which would have made her only 30 years old when Nightcrawler was previously stated to be 21. That's a 9 year age gap for what's supposedly an "always intended" parent/child relationship. Claremont then proceeded to retcon his own birth year reveal yet he still had Nightcrawler bring up the fact one of his biological parents was certified dead 4 years after introducing that piece of the puzzle. Claremont also always described Mystique's shapeshifting to be limited and on a cosmetics only level. He himself stated she was a woman in her base form, couldn't change her scent as Sabretooth and Wolverine could still know it was her in any of her disguises and had her struggle to maintain Nick Fury's form for more than few seconds just because he was taller than her. All of those power limitations were still present when Nightcrawler was already a fully grown adult.
I adored this version of storm she was motherly but still held a presence of authority and people still feared her. Also normal nightcrawler was kinda bland this personality injection was a welcomed change
When i saw the thunbnail, i honestly thought that was Rocko Bott from Mega64 with his own channel or something and that got me excited, and that's the reason i clicked
This show is what made me love Rogue. I all honesty, Rogue is the main character of the series, she's the most fleshed out, I love her chemistry with the other characters especially to Kurt and Mystique. Also, her character design is the most unique (she's the only girl with a cleft chin) among her various iterations.
I honestly prefer this series over the 90s series. The 90s series just felt too much like a toy commercial. A well made toy commercial, but a commercial nonetheless.
19:29 that wolvie costume is not necessarily from the Ultimate universe, he wore it in all 3 universe (616, ultimate and animated) cos Marvel pushed for Wolvie to have a similar costume across most mainstream media because of the movie's success
They were young adults. Colossus was 19 when he joined the X-Men and this version could be around there or in his early 20s. Gambit was clearly in his 20s somewhere
Ayy I loved this show‼️making them different ages and not all the same age was a different take. Wolverine then Gambit was my favorite characters on the show. I see the resemblance to the movies now you pointed that out.
This was certainly a fun way to revisit the X-Men though I do have two caveats. One: Why was Kitty Pryde a Valley Girl? That came across as a weird decision even if I still think she's cute. Two: Walk On The Wild Side. I get the whole female empowerment message but it felt like the show was doing that alright even without this episode. The music video is pretty 2000s in the worst ways too.
A teenage Storm, and Wolverine would make NO Sense so them being the only adults makes sense. It does suck how Gambit and Colossus were all but sidelines though.
Yeah I greatly prefer the age distributions of these versions of the characters apart from maybe Kitty and Rogue being around the same age as Scott and Jean as in my head there’s a bit of bigger age difference but not too big maybe like 5 years But I prefer Beast, Storm and Angel being older than the rest of the characters and it would just be dumb to have a teenager version of Wolverine I see Beast, Storm and Wolverine as. Charles’ younger peers
I have NOTHING but respect & love for the comics adaptation of The X-Men BUT X-Men Evolution is my favorite cartoon of the team. I mean OMG Rouge in this show IS AWESOME. !! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE when she went around taking EVERYONES powers. !!! Oh & when Scot & Alex used there powers to destroy the remains of Asteroid M WAS BADASS. !!! 😍

MOST IMPORTANTLY IT WASN'T WOKE!!!!!!!!! I WANTED A GAME AND A BLU RAY WITH 2 UNRELEASED EPISODES. A MUST WATCH 4 COMIC FANS!!!!!!!!!
It’s not even that bad like it still understands what is important about the X-Men which is the fight for equality Some of the characterisations are just a bit off
@@autobotproductions1244 wasn’t even talking about the accent really but just the characters don’t seem like real people with any motivations or like their comic book counterparts The Australian accent is not correct for Wolverine but it’s not part of his character The thing to complain about Wolverine’s character is that he’s just rude and doesn’t want Kitty around But even Magneto just seems like your over the top 80s villain, Cyclops just feels like a macho 80s action hero and Professor X has no personality At least these are things I remember as ai have seen it in a while
I remember catching a couple of episodes on tv, not liking ans dropping the show immediately. I was one of the weird kid who didn't like having youger heroes in shows
I was a little against watching that cartoon, because Wolverine was not of the main characters. Wolverine is my favourite MARVEL character and X-men. But then I watched, and I have to admit that I was wrong of criticized.

This show is still my Definitive X-Men.
loved Evolution alot more than the movies or Wolverine and the X-men. ALOT MORE.
Lord, I loved this series.
So we have megatron, dinobot, and kratos in one show
Yes! aWESOME1 Hope this means you're gonna the two Marvel TAS's in the future.
That was the original idea for his origin though.
@@ShadowSonic2 no the original parentage was that his father is either a nobel man or Azazel which both I am fine with and Mystique is the mother. I hate that that changed it to suit The Message.
@@biguy617 No, Claremont said his original idea was that Destiny was his mom and Mystique was his dad but the editors wouldn't go for it. Until now
@@ShadowSonic2 I HATE IT!! They should have left it alone!! That makes Mystipue Transgender! She was never Trans!!
I like Shadowcat, but otherwise, this is one of those shows I liked as a kid that I grew out of.
Too bad you don't like Boom Boom. She was actually my favorite character and I was really excited to learn she was part of Nextwave: Agents of Hate.
I wanna say they changed KItty's code name to Sprite in different media.
Man i feel old just remembering this show. I remember playing the wolverine amv on the old kids WB site
I adored this version of storm she was motherly but still held a presence of authority and people still feared her. Also normal nightcrawler was kinda bland this personality injection was a welcomed change
Day of Reckoning was one of the best season finales ever. It was the moment I was no longer on the fence about this show.
RIP Kirbie Morrow (AKA) Cyclops.
You know I had a few ideas for series like just adding a few episodes to it
Like what kind of ideas?
I honestly prefer this series over the 90s series. The 90s series just felt too much like a toy commercial. A well made toy commercial, but a commercial nonetheless.
The introduction of X-23 was the best part of the series.
Then that cliffhanger series ending.....mind blown
Oh, you kids 😜. I loved “Walk on the Wild Side” since the first time it aired 😜
9:41 that’s because people dig the fuzzy dude
Nightcrawler and Quicksilver were my favorite characters in this animated series
19:29 that wolvie costume is not necessarily from the Ultimate universe, he wore it in all 3 universe (616, ultimate and animated) cos Marvel pushed for Wolvie to have a similar costume across most mainstream media because of the movie's success
It’s pretty messed up that the only reason why we didn’t get a Season 5 is because nobody was buying the Toys.
I thought that Gambit and Colossus were teenagers
They were young adults. Colossus was 19 when he joined the X-Men and this version could be around there or in his early 20s. Gambit was clearly in his 20s somewhere
Ayy I loved this show‼️making them different ages and not all the same age was a different take. Wolverine then Gambit was my favorite characters on the show. I see the resemblance to the movies now you pointed that out.
Love this show! Need to hunt down the rest of the dvds. Hope you'll have a good day
This was certainly a fun way to revisit the X-Men though I do have two caveats.
Really loved this review! Brought back so many memories!
A teenage Storm, and Wolverine would make NO Sense so them being the only adults makes sense. It does suck how Gambit and Colossus were all but sidelines though.
Yeah I greatly prefer the age distributions of these versions of the characters apart from maybe Kitty and Rogue being around the same age as Scott and Jean as in my head there’s a bit of bigger age difference but not too big maybe like 5 years
But I prefer Beast, Storm and Angel being older than the rest of the characters and it would just be dumb to have a teenager version of Wolverine
I see Beast, Storm and Wolverine as. Charles’ younger peers
X-23 is one of my favorite female Marvel characters.
Your..your hair is reminding me of that scene in “There’s something about Mary”
AMAZZZZZZZING ADAPTATION!!!!!!!!!
EVEN THE NEW ADDITION TO THE SERIES I.E. SPYKE WAS NICE.
THE CHARACTERS WERE ENGAGING. THE STORYLINES WERE INTRIGUING.
IT WASN'T JUST WOLVERINE FEAT. THE X-MEN.
MOST IMPORTANTLY IT WASN'T WOKE!!!!!!!!!
I WANTED A GAME AND A BLU RAY WITH 2 UNRELEASED EPISODES.
A MUST WATCH 4 COMIC FANS!!!!!!!!!
Loved Evolution. I recommend talking about the canceled season 2 of Wolverine and the x men
This might be the Best "Animated X-men" Show, but it also goes the Heaveist into the Teen Drama Angle. That was enough to sour it for me.
I mean, the X-Men comics are hardly without their soap opera dramatics...
@@ShadowSonic2 I aint a Drama Guy. I prefer my comics and toons more FUN!
I think my main issue is, Cyclops’ voice voiced Cole and that voice just doesn’t fit Scott for me. I keep hearing Cole not Scott.
Hey man can you do an honest review on xialion showdown? Because it turn 20 years old this year
"We've never had a bad X-Men show"
*cough*Pryde of the X-men*cough**cough*
That was a pilot it doesn’t count
It’s not even that bad like it still understands what is important about the X-Men which is the fight for equality
Some of the characterisations are just a bit off
@@JOVONO like inappropriate Nightcrawler and Australian Wolverine
@@autobotproductions1244 wasn’t even talking about the accent really but just the characters don’t seem like real people with any motivations or like their comic book counterparts
The Australian accent is not correct for Wolverine but it’s not part of his character
The thing to complain about Wolverine’s character is that he’s just rude and doesn’t want Kitty around
But even Magneto just seems like your over the top 80s villain, Cyclops just feels like a macho 80s action hero and Professor X has no personality
At least these are things I remember as ai have seen it in a while
@@JOVONO all good points
it's hard to claim moral high ground when you call yourself The Brotherhood of Mutant Terrorists
Best Wolverine costume in any medium.
Do Wolverine and the X-Men next
Nothing beats the 90s cartoon, but this one came close to scratchin' that nostalgia itch, though Apocalypse & the Sentinels looked all wrong.
Really? I thought they looked better than in the 90s show. The Sentinel wasn't as pathetic either
@@ShadowSonic2 The Sentinels looked half finished! Same for Apocalypse!
@@jdzencelowcz They were trying to make the Sentinels looks more like Iron Giant type mechs here, not blocky humans.
4:19 Evolution was forged by the gods. Then you have X Men 97
Small correction, not too important:
Brad Swaile's last name is pronounced like the bird. (swale, not swa-lay)
X-Men Evolution or Teen Titans?
i use to see this as kid
Kratos himself
I remember catching a couple of episodes on tv, not liking ans dropping the show immediately.
I was one of the weird kid who didn't like having youger heroes in shows
3:23 Incorrect: The 80's suit is orange and brown not orange and black. You probably confused Evolution with the 80's.
I wish Steven E. Gordon did a Spider-Man show.
I was a little against watching that cartoon, because Wolverine was not of the main characters. Wolverine is my favourite MARVEL character and X-men. But then I watched, and I have to admit that I was wrong of criticized.
Where can I watch x men evolution
I like this series. I like that we get to see a great portrayal of Kitty Pryde for the first time. This is a good series, just not as good as the X-men animated series.
