The Crying Freeman Anime was Ridiculous

Straight out of the age of anime on VHS comes a tale of assassination, international intrigue, and random disrobing for knife fights. Crying Freeman is emblematic of the excess of the Japan of the bubble age - but it's a ridiculous, fun time to look back on.
This is the first episode in a potential "Unseen Schlock" review series.

As far fetched as it is this anime is still entertaining. Remember how some of James Bond’s antics were, you’re like “No way” but he gets a pass cause he’s James Bond😂

Crying Freeman himself comes across to me as being an erotic incarnation of Speed Racer, all dolled up with homoerotic nudity and a fondness for gory violence.

Will always love this series, it's self seriousness, craziness and style. The soundtrack is unironically great and tbh despite the cheesiness episode 1 is legitimately good with memorable moments. It's like they started with an attempt at a stylish and passionate story but immediately went bonkers afterwards (same for the manga).
Speaking of the manga it's the third and last collab between Ikegami and Koike (who didn't even know the OVA existed until asked his thoughts on it). Their first two were Offered and Wounded Man/White Haired Devil/Kazuibito. Those two don't come anywhere near as good as Freeman which is saying something. Offered is uninteresting and Wounded Man is downright disgustingly offensive with one of the most hateable protags I've ever followed, even as a huge fan of this era of manga and anime. Wounded Man also has an OVA adaptation and its just as bad. Freeman, while being crazy and absurd still has a ton of love put into it and it's hard not to appreciate that fact at the very least, not to act like it's some masterpiece.

I’m impressed by OVA animation, so much detail and I’m surprised most of them were directly to video release back then. Most of those animations are strong enough for cinematic release, thank you for the review, I really enjoyed it 👍🏻

Hey 皆んな, thanks for stopping by! This episode is a bit of a departure from our usual sort of content - as a big fan of "so-bad-it's-good" media, it's a bit more of an experiment in doing something I've always thought would make for a fun video. Hopefully you enjoy it (and maybe even find it a little interesting) - if you prefer the usual more serious takes, those will be back soon! Let me know what you thought about this video, and what your favorite schlocky Japanese media is.
English subs will be up soon, and mind the flashing lights warning in the description. じゃ!
