    BTW - Ballistol can also be used for something not on the label (at least in the USA) - the German literature used to mention that it could also be used as a makeshift wound cleaner for cuts and abrasions, disinfecting the skin. I use this on knives, firearms, almost any metal tool, and always keep a few cans nearby. Great stuff.

    My father passed away in 2008 and I remember seeing his military k bar knife my whole life. In my teens I think I may have tried to sharpen it improperly or with a horrible stone. Then I lost track of it and I think it was stored in the basement which was a horrible idea as it it very damp down there and requires a dehumidifier. Anyway we are cleaning out the old house and my Mom found it. I went crazy as I thought I lost it. It was not in the best shape and had some tarnish/rust look in appearance. I used the baking soda and water method into a paste and coated the the knife for 1 hour and then brush off the paste with a tooth brush. I could see the slight rust color leaving and falling into the sink and the knife taking a more natural look. Toward the end I reapplied some of the paste and used a bit of steel wool and gently got more of the stuff off and now it actually started looking silver again. It's a old knife as my Dad enlisted in 62' and I think they were made during WW2 and issued a bit later on. It looks better, but now I want to sharpen it properly. I have one of those 2 coarse Norton Stone's. I applied a little oil and followed the instructions to get kinks out use the less course and for actual sharpening use the other more coarse one. I did a little bit and it was sharp enough to cut paper like a razor blade, I just don't want to go further and screw it up. I read vinegar treatment works well too, but I'm satisfied with it now. I think a much more experienced person should take it from here. But for now, it looks much better and is very sharp.

  • @QuickQuips
    @QuickQuips 6 лет назад

    I highly recommend getting a patina for carbon knives. You won't need a special spray, just some vinegar and a way to dip the knife. Plus it looks badass.

Any chance on tips and tricks to guess how far it might go? Like weight of both sides?? If it is traditional from India how long would the tang be inside the handle etc.

    The best way I've found to remove minor rust is a charred piece of cork. I coat my knives with WD40 afterwards too, because I don't use carbon steel knives to cut food, I use stainless knives for that. I've had an Opinel no6 carbone which has always been with me for 2 years, often in the pocket of my bike jacket. The worst problem that I've had was when the wood in the handle swelled up, and locked the blade closed.

    • @theanxious
      @theanxious 2 года назад

      I've never heard of using charred cork. Ill have to look into that! I have several very old Opinel Carbone knives, they are absolutely wonderful! One is atleast 50 years old (1970s) and is the prettiest of the bunch! The patina is awesome on that blade. I have a few with a little rust though, maybe charred cork will be just the ticket! I've already soaked them in oil and wiped off what would come off. Still some rust spots showing. I appreciate the tip!

    If you want less maintenance on your blades, get yourself some Renaissance Wax. British Museum and restoration specialists came up with this stuff to protect valuable museum pieces including but not limited to surfaces of priceless paintings,leather, wood, metal, marble, ivory, basically everything. A little goes a very long way. One 200 ml can will last years. Rub a light sheen into the entire knife, blade, scales, and sheath. Rub it in it dries hard instantly. Repels moisture and fingerprint oils. Has a slight shoe polish odor which quickly dissipates. I use it on my rifles also.
    Also, it seems to be fine for food prep since the the solvent in the wax is a petroleum distilate, which evaporates quickly which is what makes the wax harden. The wax itself, in small amounts, is harmless. Eating whole candles might give you a belly ache but a little wax coats most of our fruits and vegetables. Keep up the good work guys!

      I use ren wax on my ww2 collection. I have tried it on high carbon steels like 1095 and o1 and it still rusts if u get it wet. It certainly helps, but Not foolproof. Also ren wax has a somewhat strong smell to it, but ur right... it goes away. Good stuff for sure. Flitz is amazing for a polish.... but won’t keep it from rusting.

    • @Zeratsu
      @Zeratsu 6 лет назад

    Watch out with that Mora Robust and other knives like it. I made mine into a custom and when I removed the handle it was way rusty inside, the handles have a small gap in them that allows water in. That is why I dont care for their rubberised grips, that is also why I really love the new material they used on the Garberg. Many complained about the grip not having softer rubber but I'm telling ya its way better than their lower grade stuff. I'm willing to bet your Robust has rust under that grip, mine was always clean and polished and yet it still was horrible under that skin.😐

    It's interesting to see how people are sceptic about that 'oil'. They don't want to use is afterwards to cut food etc.

    I live in Washington State and it rains all the time here so I definitely need a stainless knife.

    I bought a cheap little rusty ass knife and tried to restore it but I only had vinegar and my belt sharpener and it did pretty good

    Ballistol!!! Thought I was watching Hickok 45 :-))) For Rusty Parts a mix of 1 part Molasses to 12 parts water (Approx) is good, may have to leave for a week or so, and it does slightly Etch the Surface but works well :-)))
