  • One year later after purchasing and starting to use my Mac mini M2 base model (bumped to 16GB or RAM and 512gb SSD) I decided to do a quick video to talk about it's capabilities and limitations when it comes down to editing videos in Final Cut Pro using files shot on a Sony A7siii at higher resolutions such as 10 bit, 4.2.2, 4K and all this in flat profile and up to 120fps.

Hi Cris - Helpful video and I can agree. I love my MacBook Pro M2 14 inch 32GB and yes, what a difference once I switched from Intel iMac. I am using Davinci Resolve vs FCP and it works really well.

Very nice video! Used to do that on an M1 Mini with just 8GB of Ram and 265 GB. The only thing I upgraded was the LAN. For extra storage I just added a huge SSD via Thunderbolt. Awesome little box :)

    512 + 16 upgrade is not a base model

That’s right… but it ain’t the Pro model either (disclaimer in the video)

Got the same one but with 24gb ram and it works very well for Lightroom and Photoshop even with large 45mp images. My previous intel mac mini really struggled and it was a pain to do anything more than the most basic edits. Photoshop would barely run and constantly crash.

Hi Chrisse! Great video! I’m a new subscriber to your channel. I’m wedding photographer and still editing but feeling that I’m struggling on my 2015 27 inch maxed up iMac. I added about 70 weddings a year, I’m considering buying the Apple studio display and a Mac mini, but since that’s gonna be a workhorse for me, I’m not sure if the M2 Pro 32 GB ram 12core 1tb it’s a little bit over queue for editing in Lightroom only rarely using Final Cut Pro. I can afford it, but this set up will come about 3700 with trackpad and keyboard… I really wish I was able to keep all that around three but you let me know. Thank you and keep the great videos coming!

Thanks Viktor! For photography even a MacBook Air M3 will do honestly. I need a lot of ram and power when I shoot and edit black magic 4K raw for example or Sony log but for photography you can go with an M that’s not the most powerful and it’ll change your life! I’ll make a review soon of my M3 MacBook Pro as well and share my workflow. Take care

Hey Cris! I've been wondering if you would recommend a mac mini as a "desktop" edition station while maintaining my current macbook for editing on the go, or should I buy a new macbook and replace my old one?

      Hey there!
How much on the go editing do you do? Is your current laptop powerful and fast enough?
If so, sure get a Mac mini and keep your laptop.
If not (and like I did since that review) get a powerful laptop (as powerful as money allows) and use it both in the office wirh an external monitor and keyboard than on the go when you go somewhere (favorite option personally). Take care 😊

Hi Chris, very helpful video. I recently debated whether to go with the M2 Mac mini Pro with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB storage. Ended up buying a 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro with 32 GB RAM, 1TB storage on sale for the same price as the M2 Mac mini Pro. And, the M1 Max is great too. I like these types of videos too. Even would like Photoshop or Capture One photo editing tips as well. Thank you.

Thanks a lot for your message and for sharing your setup! The M1 is - imo - an underrated beast and should be treated as such, especially the Max model. Thanks for the feedback and I take note for a future video ;) take care

Would the basic model with 8GB of memory and 256 be suitable for matte paionting with Photoshop? I would use it for that and I don't want to make a large outlay.

      @cris_photography  Месяц назад +1

Honestly I’d at least bump the RAM to 16GB (256 SSD is bordering but with an external HD you can get away with it - but the RAM I don’t think 8gb is enough). Take care

Thinking of getting the base model, but upping it to 16GB. What I am annoyed by is that Apple is charging me an extra $100 to get the 10 GB Ethernet. I think that's such a ripoff because it should automatically come with that ethernet. Do you think it's worth to upgrade to the 10GB Ethernet? I would use this M2 mini mostly for Photoshop design and the occasional Premier Pro/After Effects. Keep in mind, I want this to be a long term investment. Currently, I have the 2016 Mac Book Pro with *cough* Intel chip *cough* and it has served me so faithfully all this years. Only very recent power port issues are forcing me to retire this laptop. So, any info you can provide will be helpful. Thank you

Hey there. Thanks for the message.
I think if you need that fast internet (or nw connextion) it’s worth the upgrade but I personally didn’t and everything works great without the 10GB Ethernet.
I upped to 16GB ram and 512 because it’s a VERY low cost compared to any intel ever. But yes, for PS, LrC and PP it’s more than enough.
But yes, up to 16 and 512 for sure and that’s gonna be good for a while.
      Take care!
Ps: your “cough intel cough” made my day 😂

512gb storage + 16gb RAM isn't the base model though.
