Are DH bikes faster today or is Peaty just slower? 2006 vs 2021 V10 race bike down Le Pleney.

  • Is Steve Peat faster down Pleney on his 2006 Santa Cruz V10 race bike or on his 2021 29er Santa Cruz V10 with all the latest and greatest components?
Bikes have got longer, more stable, more durable and suspension has got much better, right? Steve Peat dusts off his 2006 race bike (that he won the World Cup Series Overall on), some old race gear and tries to put down a heater on Morzine's famous Le Pleney downhill course. Can he even get close to his time on the current day race bike? You might be surprised at the result. Maybe Peaty was in his prime in 2006...

I remember years ago asked for the weight of one of their XC frames. They gave me back the weight of every single size, no questions asked. Most brands (at least back then) wouldn't give it out for FS bikes and if they did, they'd weigh the smallest. Impressive transparency.

I'm telling you right now I have a rigid mid 2000s 26" Kona I set up with a fork that put the bike as it would be with a 26" front tire and 100mm stock fork. After I finally had the stem and bars I needed that thing became a dream machine. Because of the 29" wheel dynamics it rides like it has more Rake. As such, it rides like it has a steeper head tube angle but the steering is on axis for greater leverage to overcome the extra contact patch.
Plus, when I put the 26 Holy Roller on I'm ready for Urban Big Kid BMX.

Class, Peaty still rippin it 🤘 interesting vid though thought the gap between bikes would be alot more over a 3 minute run. 27.5 would be the swet spot I reckon

He looks like a freaking giant on the 2006 in the first few shots but by the end... it was looking like nice flowy fit! Its wild how much different the bikes were.

Uff! Nice comparison. Now I am sure that my Orange Patriot 66 from 2007 is still an all terrain poem.
Will buy 29er for my xc rides. The old one from 1994 is just exhausted, of me :) although DeoreLX equipment still functions superbly.

Add modern suspension and carbon wheels to the old bike and I’d bet it would be within 3-5 seconds of the new bike. 26 for life!!!

They Just need to get back on rockshox.... that boxxer on the old v10 is still better than todays fox 40.

And if he had good brakes and wider bars he would have a lot more confidence in going flat out on the older rig. This is 2006 build 26” didn’t get crushed by the industry until around 2015 at the latest. A more modern 26 or at least one with better condition parts he would be very close if not the same…

      Very expensive per second.
I'd say to the average joe :
Train more, improve your technical skills and confidence, keep this money to explore more trails. And most of all, have fun.

@@paddor Why are you mad bro? Are you triggered because some people just don’t like wagon wheels and would rather ride smaller wheels? Does it hurt your feelings because smaller wheels accelerate quicker, brake faster, handle better, jump better are lighter and stronger? Is that why you are mad or sad? You shouldn’t assume what trails I ride, because it makes you look like an ass. I happen to have a 29lb long travel enduro/freeride bike (180mm front and rear) as my main bike as well as a 32lb DH bike, both on modern suspension, 26” wide carbon wheels and modern components. Both bikes rip and BTW, I love monster trucking through steep rough rocky technical terrain at speed. If you can’t handle that go get a hug from your mom bro. It’ll be ok. 😂👍🏼
